Concert Review: Korn “The Path of Totality” Tour, Orlando FL

Korn
“The Path of Totality” Tour
Hard Rock Live, Orlando, FL
November 10th, 2011

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

I have been listening to Korn since 1994 and I have always been a big fan.  I have seen them live twice prior to this event back in 1999 and 2003.  They are always known for their intense energy…and of course wild mosh-pits.  This concert followed that same format and wasn’t much different.  Jonathan Davis really seems to loose himself while on stage and totally gets into the music, even though he tended to disappear from stage occasionally.  The playlist was ok even though the ordering of the songs felt out of place and carried an odd pace.

Credit: Trevor Campbell

I felt that concert was split into three main parts.  The beginning of the show started with a few old and rare songs, honestly not the best choices.  But I really do love “No Place to Hide” though.  Once things get started and exciting they starting into their new songs, which was a bit of down slope in the energy.  I liked them new songs but I wish they were more spread out and not bunched together.  Halfway through the show is when they really started to rock some major ass nailing all the classic songs we love from Korn.

I honestly think that their cover of “Another Brick in the Wall” is so fantastic and is packed with so much energy.  They turn this great song into one powerful headbanging tribute.  All and all the concert was definitely fun and entertaining even besides a spotty set list.  Will I be seeing Korn again live…OH YEAH! I will be keeping an eye out for their new album, “The Path of Totality” as well which drops on December 6, 2011.

Korn Set list:
1. Predictable
2. Lies
3. No Place to Hide

CD Review: NIHM “Trade Of Chains”

NIHM
“Trade Of Chains”
Turkey Vulture Records
Tracks: 10

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

“Trade Of Chains” from the heavy metal group NIHM. The North Carolina based band has been together since 1997 and is a the three piece metal trio that combines a variety of vocal styling’s ranging from full on screaming to scattered rants combined with ferocious instrumentation. “Trade Of Chains” features 10 new tracks that are being released via Jason Z.’s Turkey Vulture Records.

I was definitely interested in checking out the newest album by NIHM. After finding out they are originally from Buffalo, NY an area close to my home I was even a little more intrigued. What I found on this recording was an at times manic flow that really amped up the intensity of each song contained on “Trade Of Chains”. I really enjoyed the spontaneity of each track however I was more a fan on songs like “A.F.R” and “Don’t Go Outside” which featured more traditional arrangements.

“Trade Of Chains” is not a bad album as the group has a sound that is different from a lot of other bands in this genre. At times it felt as though the vocals where a bit rushed which in my opinion seemed to rush the song. This could have been done on purpose as it does give the bands an overall different feel that I am sure some listeners will enjoy.

Track Listing:
1.)    Anon
2.)    Ties
3.)    Holecloser
4.)    A.F.R.
5.)    An Unkind
6.)    Don’t Go Outside
7.)    Ape
8.)    In Your Debt
9.)    My Sweet Oblivion
10.)   Put You Down

CD Review: On Edge “Waiting For Daylight”

On Edge
“Waiting For Daylight”
Turkey Vulture Records
Tracks: 11

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Formed in Yakima, Washington in 1998 the band On Edge is a blending of many different musical styles. From straight up rock and roll to full-blown heavy metal On Edge does it all! The bands first release titled “Waiting For Daylight” features 11 original tracks by the 5 member band. The album is being released via Jason Z.’s Turkey Vulture Records which is based out of Rockford Illinois.

I found the tracks contained on “Waiting For Daylight” to be very enjoyable to listen to. Each of the 11 tracks featured on the album had some really great grooves which pulled you in and made you want more. When an album has the power to pull the listener in the artists have done their job. “Waiting For Daylight” is one of those albums and them some! Tracks like “American Idol”, “Breaking” and, “Complicated” which features a very melodic arrangement that further showcases the bands diversity. Owner/Producer Jason Z. really found himself another great act to add to his already impressive lineup at Turkey Vulture Records.

If you have the chance to pick up On Edge’s debut album “Waiting For Light” definitely do it. You won’t be disappointed

Track Listing:
1.)    Stars
2.)    Transmit The Dead
3.)    American idol
4.)    Wasted Life
5.)    Breaking
6.)    Complicated
7.)    Hurt By You
8.)    Mutant Gooch
9.)    Ojos

CD Review: Dyer “Rage…Fury…Alcohol”

Dyer
“Rage…Fury…Alcohol”
Turkey Vulture Records
Tracks: 9

Our Score: 3 out of 5

“Rage…Fury…Alcohol” is the first release from the Southern California heavy metal band Dyer. The 4 piece band made up of Carlos Velarde- guitars, Ivan Gonzalez- vocals, Sergio Lopez- Bass and Ryan Nazarian- Drums bring a no nonsense approach to their playing of intense heavy metal. The album features 9 tracks and is being released via Turkey Vulture Records.

If you are looking for straight forward no frills heavy metal then this is the album for you. Each track contained on the album is a stripped down metal master piece. Vocalist Ivan Gonzalez does a great job pushing his performances almost to the breaking point which surely just adds to the bands performance. Tracks such as “Against The Grain” and the melodic “My Last Rights” were personal highlights. From a production stand point the album seems to have a minimalist approach which I feel contributed the albums raw feel.

“Rage…Fury…Alcohol” is exactly as the title says. If you are a fan of bands such as Machine Head or Fear Factory definitely give the new album by Dyer a listen.

Track Listing:
1.) Rage…Fury…Alcohol
2.) Hallow Ground
3.) Against The Grain
4.) Black Plague
5.) Left For Dead
6.) My Last Rights
7.) Revenant Mind
8.) The Bridge Burner
9.) The Fall

Interview with The Great Commission’s Justin Singh

Justin Singh is the lead vocalist for The Great Commission a faith based metal-core band hailing from Redlands, California. The band released its second album in July of this year titled “Heavy Worship”. The album was produced by Andrew P. Glover and is being released via Century Media/ANGR Records. Media Mikes had a chance to talk with Justin prior to the bands performance in Syracuse, NY about the new album and the bands upcoming plans.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about the band’s latest release “Heavy Worship”?
Justin Singh:  “Heavy Worship” was released in July on Century Media/ANGR records. It took us 2 years to write this album. We had received a lot of labels offers after our contract had run out with Strike First/ Face Down records but, we were really waiting on god to pick the right label for us. During that time we were just writing music and lyrics that we felt would represent the band. We took time and sat down with every song to figure out what it was saying. We wanted to make sure that the music on the album was just as heavy as the message. That’s the reason we titled it “Heavy Worship”

AL: How do you think this album compares to the bands previous release?
JS: I feel like this album is more of us. The first album was written with the idea of what would we want to mosh to in heaven. It was of just a fun album that had lyrics that glorified god and was just heavy. With “Worship Music” we took the same concept as with the first album but we upped everything. The lyrics on this album are not just lyrics. We wanted the album to be catchy but we also wanted the songs to have meaning and to show that we live the lyrics that we are writing.

AL: What led you guys to sample lines from “The Boondock Saints” and “Dawn of the Dead”?
JS: It will probably sound weird but I feel god speaks to me through movies no matter what the films beliefs. I get so into movies that I start to put myself into the situations. I loved the line in “The Boondock Saints” where Norman Reedus’s character explains why they do what they do. Instead of taking it in the literal sense I took it as there are a lot of evils in our life that need to be killed in order to better ourselves. The other clip was from George Romero’s film “Dawn of the Dead” and I feel that sometimes as people we become dead inside. The first line of that song is “wake up” and it’s about waking up this generation from its mundane life. It’s almost like going from being dead to alive.

AL: Do you have a favorite track off the album?
JS: That’s a hard one. It’s a tossup between “Don’t Go To Church, Be The Church” and “Draw The Line”. Both of those songs mean a lot to me for different reasons. “Don’t Go To Church, Be The Church” is awesome because I feel like from a Christian point of view in this culture were involved in it’s easy to say “We are waiting for revival”. We as people are revivals so the song is about breaking down the walls and the mentality that a church is a building. We can have church really anywhere from a venue parking lot to riding in a car. We can really talk about things anywhere. We don’t have to go to a particular building or place. “Draw The Line” is awesome because even if you are not a Christian you can still relate to the songs message. We all have our own person struggles and sometimes we have to realize that we are the cause of our own problems. Unless we change ourselves our current status isn’t going to change. It could be anything from addiction to being in a bad relationship. It’s on us to bring the better out.

AL: This band has a unique stand on Christianity as compared to other bands in the genre. Can you tell us about that?
JS: I personally only speak from experience. As we have started to branch out and not only do Christian tours but secular tours fans have come up to me and telling me about how they have been told they are going to hell for having tattoos and piercings or listening to heavy music. I was drawn to this music because of its aggressiveness. Growing up I was just captivated by the music. I always wondered why we couldn’t do this for god? When we partnered the two together we saw what happened. There are a lot of people out there especially in the south and across the states that say if you have or do any of these things you are going to hell. It’s not true! Even though we love Jesus we are a very anti-religion band.

AL: Can you tell the fans one thing they might not know about The Great Commission?
JS: (Laughs) I am going to go through them one by one. Angela is the biggest “Star Wars” nerd! She and her brother actually go to “Star Wars” conventions. Victor is a huge Nickelback fan as well as Backstreet Boys and Nsync. Me personally I am the biggest comic book geek. I am really into Marvel comics. Our drummer Alonzo is from Costa Rica and he is really into samba music. He incorporates a lot of that stuff into our albums. Solomon our bass player isn’t touring with us right now because he is at home preparing to get married. As soon as we get back from this tour a few of us are going to be in his wedding.

AL: What are the bands plans for the rest of 2011 and into 2012?
JS: We have been on the road so much lately that our friends back home in California have been kind of neglected. We are going to take December off from touring but we will be doing a few festivals in California and possibly Arizona. In January we are going start pre-production of the new album and start recording in February. From there we will hopefully be back out touring.

CD Review: A Break In The Strom “Metonia”

A Break In The Strom
“Metonia”
Turkey Vulture Records
Tracks: 10

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

“Metonia” is the debut release from the Merrill, WI based metal core band A Break In The Storm. The album features 10 original tracks and is being released via Turkey Vulture Records. After listening through the entire album I had to sit back and really take it all in. Each song contained on the album is bursting at the seams with metal core goodness. Everything you could ever ask for from cookie monster vocals, to melodic harmonies, blazing guitar work, and solid drumming “Metonia” has it.

The overall mixing of the album I thought was done very well. Even with the intense nature of the music nothing was lost and each of the instruments could be heard very clearly. I was most impressed with the tracks “Beneath The Surface”, “Reflections” and “Roam This World” as all three had a great grooves while featuring a variety of transitions which made the tracks even more entertaining as they had an element of surprise to them. If you haven’t done so already give A Break In The Storm’s newest release “Metonia” a listen. You won’t be disappointed!

Track Listing:
1.) Beneath The Surface
2.) My Last Goodbye
3.) Passenger
4.) Reflections
5.) Roam This World

CD Review: The Devil Wears Prada “Dead Throne”

The Devil Wears Prada
“Dead Throne”
Ferret Records
Producer: Adam Dutkiewicz
Tracks: 13

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

“Dead Throne” is the follow up release to The Devil Wears Prada 2009 album “With Roots Above and Branches Below”. “Dead Throne” features 13 new tracks by the 6 piece metal-core band and was produced by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. “Dead Throne” is being released via Ferret Records.

After listening to “Dead Throne” the first time through I immediately hit repeat and listened through the entire album a second time. “Dead Throne” has so much to listen to that I needed to play the album again just to take it all in. Each track on “Dead Throne” features a wide array of instrumentation which ranges from break neck shredding to groove filled break downs. Songs like “Mammoth”, “Vengeance”, and the album’s first single “Born to Lose” are shining examples of what the band is capable of. From a production stand point Adam Dutkiewicz did a great job giving the tracks an extremely heavy and full sound making each tack contained on “Dead throne” worthy of cranking from your car while driving in a residential neighborhood.

The Devil Wears Prada’s “Dead Throne” was an interesting listen as you never knew what you were going to hear next. I found the album to be quite versatile and more than just your typical metal-core album. Fans of the bands 2009 release will be more than happy listening to The Devil Wears Prada’s latest release “Dead Throne”.

Track Listing:
•    Dead Throne
•    Untidaled

“Clear and Present Anger” is the second release from the Toledo, Ohio based metal group Mobile Deathcamp. The trio consists of former Gwar/Green Jelly member Todd Evans on guitar/vocals, bassist Boe Skadeland and drummer Dave Martin. “Clear and Present Anger” features 10 all new original tracks produced by Jason Z. and is being released via Turkey Vulture Records

The album picks up right where Mobile Deathcamp’s previous release “Black Swamp Rising” left off. “Clear and Present Anger” is classic speed metal with a modern twist. Tracks such as “Emerald” and “Earth Metal” are relentless in their approach as each track contained on “Clear and Present Anger” is filled to the brim with intensity. Casual listeners might not connect right away with this album however long time metal fans and supporters of Todd Evan’s previous bands will appreciate this album.

CD Review: Black Label Society “Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good” EP

Black Label Society
“Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good” EP
eOne Music
Tracks: 3

Our Score: 2 out of 5 stars

“Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good” is the Newest EP by the Zakk Wylde fronted group Black Label Society. The EP consists of 3 classic Christmas songs performed by Zakk and his band. The album is being released via eOne Music and available today via iTunes.

I found this CD to be somewhat of a letdown. The tracks feature minimal performances of 3 Christmas Classics by Zakk Wylde and company. I really struggled to find something that stood out and was different. I am a huge Zakk Wylde fan and have quite a collection of his material however the only thing that was somewhat interesting about this EP was the ridiculously long title.

Black Label Society’s “Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good” is nothing that hasn’t been done before. However for those BLS chapter members looking for something to listen to during the holiday season the 3 tracks contained on “Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good” should help get you in the Christmas mood.

Track Listing:
•    I’ll Be Home For Christmas
•    Oh Little Town of Bethlehem

CD Review: Steel Panther “Balls Out”

Steel Panther
“Balls Out”
Universal Republic
Producer: Jay Ruston
Tracks: 14

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Balls Out” is the second release by the Los Angeles based band Steel Panther. “Balls Out” features 14 all new tracks by the spandex clad band that were produced by Jay Ruston. The album is being released via Universal Republic and is the follow up to Steel Panthers 2009 release “Feel The Steel”.

“Balls Out” seems to lack the catchiness of the bands first release “Feel The Steel”. It’s as though the band went more for a shock approach with their lyrics rather than concentrating on making a good album as a whole. “Balls Out” is still good and packed full classic 80’s inspired riffs that will make you want to tease your hair to epic proportions. Tracks like “Tomorrow Night” and “Critter” were the highlights for me while tracks like “It Won’t Suck Itself” featuring Chad Kroeger of Nickelback and the album’s first single “17 Girls In A Row” are definitely worth mentioning.

Though “Balls Out” doesn’t measure up to the bands previous release its still a fun and upbeat album that you can sing along to. Steel Panther fans new and old should be able to find something of “Balls Out” that they will enjoy.

Track Listing:
•    In The Future
•    Supersonic Sex Machine
•    Just Like Tiger Woods
•    17 Girls In A Row
•    If You Really Really Love Me
•    It Won’t Suck Itself
•    Tomorrow Night
•    Why Can’t You Trust me
•    That’s What Girls Are For
•     Gold Digging Whore
•     I Like Drugs
•     Critter
•     Let Me Cum In

CD Review: Dreams Will Fade “Before The Dawn”

Dreams Will Fade
“Before The Dawn”
Turkey Vulture Records
Producer: Jason Z.
Tracks: 10

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

“Before The Dawn” is the debut album from the 5 member Wisconsin based band Dreams Will Fade. The album feature 10 original hard rock tracks produced by Jason Z. “Before The Dawn” is being released via Turkey Vulture records.

“Before The Dawn” was a fairly decent listen as the album had several high lights. I felt the band did a good job of blending melodic vocal lines with heavy riff driven instrumentation. Tracks such as “Before The Dawn”, “Watch You Fall” and “Whatever” were personal highlights and in my opinion and featured some great arrangements and performances. I would have liked the overall mix of the album to be a little more up front and in your face however each track still sounded good.

Dreams Will Fade’s “Before The Dawn” as a whole is a good album. I could have done with a little less screaming as I don’t think it’s the bands strong suit. If you are a fan of bands like Killswitch Engage, Breaking Benjamin and Pierce The Veil then you will definitely want to check out Dreams Will Fade’s debut album.

Track Listing:
• Against a Wall
• Before The Dawn
• Hard To See
• Last Time
• Losing It
• On The Edge
• Pressure
• Swallow
• Watch You Fall

Interview with GWAR’s Cory Smoot (1977-2011)

Michael Derks and Cory Smoot are their given names however most GWAR fans know them as the guitar wielding duo made up of Balsac the Jaws of Death and Flattus Maximus. Movie Mikes had a chance to interview Michael (Balzac) and Cory (Flattus) about the bands recent Australian tour and the band’s new album “Bloody Pit of Horror”.

Click here to purchase GWAR’s music and new CD “Bloody Pit of Horror”

Adam Lawton: How is everything going today guys?
Michael Derks: Ugh I am jet lagged as hell from Australia! (Laughs)
Cory Smoot: Pretty good man.

AL: How did each of you come to join the band?
MD: I was going to VCU and I had been playing guitar with Mike Bishop, who played Beefcake on the GWAR album “Hell-O.” Just as I started jamming with him, Steve Douglas who played Balsac was kicked out of the band. From there they asked me to join the band.
CS: Back in 2002, GWAR had lost their previous guitar player Zack Blair. I had always been a local guy in Richmond. I was playing in a band called Misguided which had opened for Rawg a few times and I was friends with Dave Brockie. One day they called me up and asked me to join the group. I think I am now the longest lasting person to play the Flattus character.

AL: Michael, what did you think initially about having to where the Balsac costume?
MD: (Laughs) it was fun. I wasn’t really excited about having to wear it but it wasn’t horrible. The costume has actually gotten bigger and bigger over the years. So back when I was asked to join it really wasn’t too big of a deal. At first there was really just a mask and some boots. Now I have huge legs and shoulders pads.

AL: How was it touring Australia for the first time?
MD: It was a lot of fun. The Aussies went crazy!
CS: It was really beautiful and awesome. It was summer time there which beats the weather we are having here right now.

AL: Were you guys surprised by how great the reception was?
MD: Everyone goes crazy for us we are fucking GWAR! (Laughs). If we had gotten anything less they would not have survived!
CS: The crowds were really great and the promoters really want us to come back again soon!

AL: What’s your favorite track off the new album?
MD: The opening track “Bloody Pit of Horror” which is actually just about the entire first half of the album. That song or songs really encompasses a lot of different styles. It covers a lot.
CS: I like “KZ Necromancer” as well as “Bloody Pit of Horror” which we get to change it up a bit and play eight string guitars.

AL: What was it like using an eight string guitar on that track?
MD: It was fun! At first I hated it. When I picked it up I thought it was ridiculous. It was a really weird feeling but after using it this whole tour it’s actually still ridiculous. (Laughs) I have gotten used to it and its kind of fun to hit that low F string.
CS: It was different but it wasn’t too hard to get used to. I had some experience on the last album using one so I knew what I was in for.

AL: You both worked as producers on GWAR’s latest DVD release “Lust in Space: Live at the National” correct?
MD: I actually did more of the engineering work of the audio mixes than the visual production side of things. Cory was more of the producer. As a band, we produce the songs collectively.
CS: Besides producing the DVD I also have produced the last two GWAR records “Lust in Space” and “Bloody Pit of Horror”. I also co-produced “Beyond Hell” and “War Party.” So I kind of have a dual role as artist and producer.

AL: What are your plans for when the tour wraps up?
MD: As soon as I get home I have to go back to work as a bartender because it costs a lot to be a big rubber monster (Laughs).
CS: I have a recording studio at home called Karma Productions that I plan to start spending a lot more time on. The wife and I have started to look for land which we can build a house and studio on.

AL: Any funny stories from this year’s tour?
CS: Oh there were some fun and crazy moments. Nothing was however too crazy other than the fact that we are GWAR and a certain amount of that stuff comes with the territory. The customs officers had a good time going through are stage gear (Laughs).

Interview with Knight Area’s Mark Smit

Mark Smit is the vocalist for the Progressive Rock group Knight Area. The band has just released their 4th studio album titled “Nine Paths”. Media Mikes had a chance to chat briefly with Mark about the new album.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about the new album “Nine Paths”?
Mark Smit: “Nine Paths” is our fourth studio album, the title refers to an interpretation of the tarot where the cards are grouped into nine groups with one theme each. Each song on the album deals with one of the themes.

AL: How does this album differ from the bands previous releases?
MS: Previously only Gerben Klazinga composed, this time we have two compositions from the other band members. In general the song writing has become more of a group process which makes this album more than ever a product of the entire group. This has introduced some new influences, which has contributed to the richness and variety.

AL: How was it working with producer Neil Kernon?
MS: He is very professional, very friendly and open to suggestions. Neil is great to work with.

AL: What is your favorite track off the new album?
MS: I find it difficult to pick a favorite, perhaps The River because of its atmosphere.

AL: What are the bands upcoming tour plans?
MS: We will be playing some shows in Germany and hopefully more tour dates will follow.

CD Review: The Elves and Ronnie James Dio “And Before Elf…There Were Elves”

The Elves and Ronnie James Dio
“And Before Elf…There Were Elves”
Label: Niji Entertainment
12 Tracks
Running Time: 53 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

If you are expecting the Ronnie James Dio on this album that we knew and loved, you might be a little disappointed. This is a very blues-fused album with very early recordings from metal legend Ronnie James Dio. The Elves were formed in the late 60’s and are categorized as a mix between Rock, Honky Tonk and Blues. This album features 12 previously unreleased tracks from 1971 and are collections of both studio and live tracks. I definitely enjoyed the album and it definitely shows a different side of Dio that I never knew.

One of my favorite tracks on the album has to be “Stay With Me”. It is very catchy and very well orchestrated. The album runs a nice strong 53 minutes and delivers pretty strong from beginning to end. The music reminds me of a mix between “The Who” and “Grateful Dead” and a twist of the blues. This album just proves how much range Dio really had and he definitely nails it on this album. Although these tracks are 40 years old, the quality is quite notable especially since Dio’s Wyn Davis remastered from the original tapes.

Track List:
01. You Shook Me
02. Stay With Me
03. Four Day Creep
04. Buckingham Blues
05. Wakeup Sunshine
06. Driftin’
07. Smile For Me Lady
08. You Felt The Same Way
09. Simple Man
10. Drown Me In The River
11. Cold Ramona
12. Little Queenie
