If you want to buy a gift for a child, the gift of music might turn out to be the best present they’ll ever receive. It is possible to purchase guitars in all sizes nowadays, so you should easily be able to find a guitar that the child will be able to hold.
Don’t expect a child to take to the guitar straight away and become the next Jimi Hendrix overnight, and putting pressure on them to learn won’t make the experience enjoyable, but if they do manage to figure out some chords for guitar songs, then this new hobby will have lots of benefits. It takes patience, passion, and discipline to become a good guitarist, and these are good habits we all would like to see children get used to.
Playing the Guitar as an alternative to Screen Time
Children nowadays seem to be around screens a lot. Whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, television, or computer, it may seem that kids are often glued to these screens. Too much screen time can have a devastating effect on a child’s mental health including:
Causes sleep deprivation, not just in children, but in people of all different age groups.
Can be one of the main causes of obesity when children just laze around the house, staring at a screen.
Due to the lack of activity and staying in the same position for long periods, many children complain about aches and pains, especially with their back and neck.
Children often find it difficult to interact with other children and adults.
Outbursts of aggression and mood swings are common amongst children who spend too long on screens.
The guitar is a great alternative to watching YouTube or playing games on a device. Learning a musical instrument, especially a guitar has a long list of mental and physical benefits for a child.
This year is a perfect time for a Child to Learn the Guitar
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 virus is still spreading across the world. Many businesses have been forced to close, experts advise us to practice social distancing and wear masks. The pandemic has been especially tough for children. In some areas schools remain closed to help reduce the spread of the virus and others have opened but under strict Covid-19 guidelines. Most children are not allowed to go and play with their friends.
Lots of parents have been forced to homeschool their kids, which has proven for many a very difficult task. Keeping children entertained while they are cooped up in a house is also very difficult.
However, purchasing a guitar for a child during the pandemic might prove to be a great idea. Nowadays, there is an abundance of guitar tutorials on YouTube and other websites to help your child learn without leaving the house. There are plenty of online music stores, selling all types of guitars and any other equipment such as strings, plectrums, and capos that your child will need. Shopping online for a guitar will reduce the risk of contracting the virus because you can request that the store deliver it directly to your house. In the past, beginners needed to buy books with chords but are now widely available online. You can easily find your favorite artists’ songs on the internet that allow you access to U2, Oasis, Blur, Bruno Mars, and adele chords.
Many students who feel pressure when learning the guitar, often give up. Learning from home allows a child to learn how to play the guitar at their own pace will make playing and learning very enjoyable.
Having this spare time is an opportunity that your child might never have again in their lives. You may feel regret in the future if your child doesn’t do something productive during the pandemic. A skill like being able to play the guitar will bring some positivity from a negative situation.
Private Guitar Tutorials Online
With many music teachers unable to give music lessons in person, they often offer their services online which is in many cases just as effective. Issues like tuning might prove hard to teach over the internet, but there are plenty of guitar tuners in case the guitar doesn’t have one installed already. There is also a wide range of applications online that will help a child tune the guitar, and there are many videos on Youtube that will let the child listen to the sound that each string should sound like. The same problem goes for replacing a string. Teachers would normally show a student how to take off and put on a string in person, but thankfully there are many videos uploaded to Youtube on this topic.
The downside about learning the guitar with a teacher online is that sometimes the audio on the device might not sound good. If the internet connection is not very slow, or the quality of your speaker or microphone on your device is not up to standard, there is a strong possibility that your audio will be compromised. To fix this problem, you might have to replace some of your audio devices and change your internet provider.
Health benefits to Learning the Guitar
When you think about a child learning the guitar, you probably think that it will be a nice hobby, a great way to keep them entertained and that they will be able to play some nice music. This is true, however, there is plenty of other benefits when learning how to play the guitar such as:
Discipline: Learning the guitar takes discipline. This doesn’t mean that you should force your child to learn at a certain time throughout the day, to become a good guitarist it takes a lot of self-discipline which is a vital lesson in life for a child.
Exercise a child’s brain: The child will need to use their brain to help them focus and they will also need to memorize chords and strumming techniques.
Helps a child boost their motor skills: When a child learns how to play a new sport, they improve their hand-eye coordination. Learning the guitar has a similar effect. During the early days of learning the guitar, every child will struggle to do complex movements required to play the guitar well, but after time and lots of practice, they will improve.
Learning the guitar gives a child a chance to gain new tools that they will be able to use in the real world.
If you purchase a guitar for a child and they don’t seem interested in learning at the start, be patient. In many cases, it takes years until the child decides they want to learn how to play.
When buying a guitar, don’t cut corners by purchasing the cheapest guitar in the shop. These cheap models are often very difficult for beginners as the action of the guitar is far from the fret. Children will find it difficult to press their fingers down on the strings. Even experienced guitarists struggle with these guitars.
Many children find it difficult to express themselves. Lots of children find it much easier to express themselves through playing musical instruments. Experts claim that children suffering from ADHD find it very enjoyable to express their emotions while playing the guitar.

The Boyd Satellite Gallery in conjunction with Art for Arts Sake, is proud to present artist Sean Yseult’s new photography series They All Axed For You. The new photographs serve as both a love letter and birthday gift for the City of New Orleans on the anniversary of it’s Tricentennial. The inspiration for this show began with this love of Nola, and some very strong images Ms. Yseult saw in her dreams. The show is on display October 2nd – October 31st with an Artist’s Reception October 6th.
One image titled Procession depicts Audubon Zoo animals lined up in pairs on a path through the large Live Oaks. In a dream that came to the artist the day after her mother passed away, the two of them were walking through the animals in the park, as though guided by a light.
Another image, Elephants Storming the Mississippi was also dreamt first – elephants slowly and determinedly trudging through the river in a somewhat ominous manner. Once realizing that these images occurred in two of the Artist’s favorite and most iconic spots of New Orleans, this concept became the basis of the show: the beasts of the Audubon Zoo have a day pass and are hanging out in all of Ms. Yseult’s favorite iconic spots. The show is the perfect way to marry her tribute to the Tri Centennial, her favorite locations in New Orleans for settings, and some colorful local characters for models.
In addition, the Boyd Satellite Gallery will be home to some of Ms. Yseult’s colorful design work, through her new Wallpaper Series acting as backdrop to the photos.
Sean Yseult is best known as the bass player from the multi-platinum, twice Grammy-nominated band White Zombie. Sean spent her formative years at the North Carolina School of the Arts studying ballet and earned a BFA in Photography and Design at Parsons School of Design NYC.
Upon White Zombie’s breakup, she moved to New Orleans and began showing her photography. This is Ms. Yseult’s fourth solo art exhibition series. Her previous work has been shown in solo shows in New Orleans, New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and can be viewed by visiting www.seanyseult.com. In 2010 her autobiographical photo-book I’m In The Band was published (Soft Skull Press). Photos in the 2nd gallery continue the exhibition with Backstage: Rock Shots by Sean Yseult, including the Ramones, Pantera, and the Cramps.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
Lawless: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Distributed by: Sony Masterworks
Release Date: August 28, 2012
Running Time: 39 minutes
Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis have collaborated on many films including “The Proposition”, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and “The Road”. They all seem to have the same feel to each of them, though all unique. The film is based on Matt Bondurant’s 2008 novel “The Wettest County in the World” and that novel was adapted into a screenplay by Nick Cave. The soundtrack is a nice mixture of original songs written by Nick Cave for the movie and performances by Country legends Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris along with Grammy Award winner Ralph Stanley (O Brother, Where Art Thou) and Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are best known for their work in the critically acclaimed rock band, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Cave and Ellis mixed their original music with innovative vocal under the name of The Bootleggers, which was the band they formed for the project. After listening to this album on loop a few times, I did start to dig it a bit more, but I feel it still runs a little too short for my taste. Nonetheless, it definitely captures the essence of the film very well. It also has a real period feel of country mixed with bluegrass. I would actually recommend listening to it and THEN seeing the film, since it will definitely get you in the mood.
The track from country legend Willie Nelson was actually previously unreleased and packs a mean harmonica. There are two versions of Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat”, one by Mark Lanegan and the other by bluegrass veteran Ralph Stanley. The two new songs that Cave and Ellis specifically wrote for this film was “Cosmonaut” and “Fire in the Blood” featuring versions from Emmylou Harris and Ralph Stanley. The album ends on an instrumental track called “End Crawl, which is a brave move but is a good close.

“In The Present- Live From Lyon”
Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars
“In The Present-Live From Lyon” is the latest live release from the classic rock group Yes. The album was recorded during the bands performance in Lyon, France on December 1st, 2009. The album is being released on Frontier Records as a 2 CD/DVD combo as well as a 3 LP set featuring a limited edition gatefold sleeve.
Yes are no strangers to the live album concept as this is the bands 5th live release since their inception in 1968. “In The Present- Live From Lyon” is packed full of classic Yes tunes from all era’s of the bands career. Tracks such as “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart” are featured on this 2 CD or 3 LP release. Vinyl purists should take note that the 3 LP versions do not include the 55 min. DVD which accompanies the 2 CD version of the album. However the vinyl release does feature a limited edition gatefold sleeve.
I found the recordings contained on “In The Present- Live From Lyon” to be missing some of their drive. Each of the 14 tracks sounded very thin and lacked bass and definition. Historically Live albums are just as they say…Live which can account for diminished sound qualities. However in today’s day world live recording technology allows almost as much flexibility as a studio setting. I think a lot more could have been done to increase the bands over all sound. It really is just a shame that such great playing is over shadowed by poor sound quality. That aside diehard yes fans will still want to add this release to their collections.

“Clear and Present Anger”
Turkey Vulture Records
Producer: Jason Z.
Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars
“Clear and Present Anger” is the second release from the Toledo, Ohio based metal group Mobile Deathcamp. The trio consists of former Gwar/Green Jelly member Todd Evans on guitar/vocals, bassist Boe Skadeland and drummer Dave Martin. “Clear and Present Anger” features 10 all new original tracks produced by Jason Z. and is being released via Turkey Vulture Records
The album picks up right where Mobile Deathcamp’s previous release “Black Swamp Rising” left off. “Clear and Present Anger” is classic speed metal with a modern twist. Tracks such as “Emerald” and “Earth Metal” are relentless in their approach as each track contained on “Clear and Present Anger” is filled to the brim with intensity. Casual listeners might not connect right away with this album however long time metal fans and supporters of Todd Evan’s previous bands will appreciate this album.
“Clear and Present Anger” is a solid album that showcases Mobile Deathcamp’s growth as a band. Each members performance is tight and in sync with the direction of each song. Fans of the bands previous release will surely want to pick up a copy of “Clear and Present Anger”.
