Charles Band…this guy is a legend. He has not only been making the movies that he wants to make for the last 30 years but now he is also being a magazine publisher. You really got to give it to this guy for non-stop work in order to deliver to the large appetite of this fans. Flashback to early 1990-1991, I remember I used to walk up and down the horror section in the local mom and pop video store, Royal Video in Long Island, NY, looking for killer horror titles. I found myself in front of “Re-Animator” and my life was changed. Fast forward many years, I have a copy of issue #1 of Charles Band’s hororr magazine, “Full Moon Presents: Delirium”, in my hands and I am transported back to that aisle in the video store. Thanks Charles! You the man! All I have to ask is when is issue #2 coming out?

Inside this beautiful magazine is filled with everything Full Moon and horror from Blu-ray advertisements to convention promotions. There are some great featured interviews including a nice focus on one of my favorites “Re-Animator”. There is a Q&A with Stuart Gordon about his beloved horror cult classic. The gorgeous Barbara Crampton chimes in about her titilating role in “Re-Animator”. Of course the man that ties it all together, composer Richard Band talks about the music for “Re-Animator”. There are also interviews on newer projects including Douglas Aarniokoski talking about directing “Nurse 3D” and his start at Full Moon and also Olivia Alexander talking about her role in Full Moon’s “Killer Eye 2”. Lastly there is a great feature “Red, White and Blue Underground” which has Full Moon taking a look at the company’s amazing titles.

Besides features, there are some other great columns included. The issue kicks off with “Delirious Words” which is love letter to Band’s Full Moon from the editor. “Full Moon Rising” takes a look into the ganja versions of classic films “Trophy Heads” and “Head of the Family”. “Bring me the Head of Stuart Gordon” has the director talking about his adventures in filmmaking. “Wizard Studios” is an amazing piece on the newly revival of the microbudget imprint within Fill Moon and their first three films. “Grindhouse Flix” has legendar actress Celeste Yarnall reflecting on her role in “The Velvet Vampire”. “The Vault” takes a look back into the cult classic “Tourist Trap”. Wrapping this up is “Bandwidth”, which is a closing words from publisher Charles Band.

I think this magazine has great potential for us horror fans. Currently my favorite horror magazine has to be Horrorhound and this reminds me a lot about it. Fangoria gives away too many spoilers. Rue Morgue is too wordy and not very fun to read. My only comments again Delirium would be for them to figure out a common font size and style for each article and stick to it since there is a lot of jumping around and it is distracting. The only other thing would be the price point $45 dollars for a subscription, which is not terrible since I think Horrorhound is $35 but my issue is that shipping is not included. But either way, if you love horror and Full Moon’s contribution to it, I would recommend checking this out. Blu-ray Review “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa”

If you saw “Jackass 3D”, then you will remember Johnny Knoxville running around in old man makeup and it was epic. When you see this title, “Jackass Presents”, you might think this to be expect just gross ass stunts and funny antics but “Bad Grandpa” is much more. The film has quite a bit of heart…mixed in with the crazy stunts and funny antics. Jackson Nicoll adds a different level of funny and balances out Johnny Knoxville quite well who again rocks that make-up. Fan of “Jackass” series or not, I would highly recommend checking out.

Official Premise: Jackass ringleader Johnny Knoxville reprises his role as 86-year-old Irving Zisman in the story of a crotchety old man unexpectedly saddled with the care of his 8-year-old grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll). The two generations of troublemakers soon develop a bond, as they hustle their way across the heartland of America pursuing hijinks and pulling pranks on unsuspecting, real-life people—all of whom had no idea they were starring in a hidden camera film.

Paramount is releasing this film in a combo pack with a Blu-ray + DVD + HD Digital Copy. It also includes two different version of the film, the 91 minute theatrical cut and a 102 minute new unrated cut with more hilarious footage not shown in theaters! This is not your typical two minute longer unrated cut, this packs some impressive new footage. The 1080p transfer is good but you have to remember that a lot of this was shot with hidden cams. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track works ok but I had some issues here some of the talking over the louder music.

In terms of special features, the fun doesn’t stop with the film. There are eight Behind-the-Scenes featurettes including, “The Funeral”, “Estate Sale”, “Window Launch”, “Shipping Billy”, “The Penguin”, “Wedding Crashers”, “The Drop Off” and “Beauty Pageant”. There six different Alternate Reactions takes from Real People with “Meet Billy”, “Meet Irving”, “The Skype Call”, “Billy Shops for Parents” and “Irving Hits on Women 1 & 2”. Lastly there are three deleted scenes included.

Film Review “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa”

When you think of a film by the people behind “Jackass” what words come to mind? “Outrageous?” “Over the top?” “How in the hell did they do that?” Well their latest collaboration, “Bad Grandpa,” can certainly be described by those words. And don’t forget “Hilarious.” Heck, I’d even add “Even Touching.”

No, I’m not kidding.

We meet 86 year old Irving Zisman (Knoxville in some incredible make-up) shortly after his wife has passed away. To add to his bad news his daughter (Georgina Cates) informs him that she is heading back to prison. She asks her pop to please take her 8 year old son, Billy (Nicoll) from Nebraska to North Carolina to drop him off with his father. Irving is reluctant at first but, seeing she has no other choice, agrees. Thus begins the ultimate road trip.

Like “Borat” before it, “Bad Grandpa” is a hidden camera experiment taken to new heights. Knoxville is so skilled in his performance that he manages to convince anyone he encounters that he is a kindly old man who’s just having a string of bad luck. Be it an estate sale gone bad, a funeral service gone even worse or a night of drinking at a St. Louis bar featuring male dancers, director Tremaine’s cameras catch everyday people at their best (and, to be honest, most of the people do take a liking to gramps and Billy). I think it has something to do with respecting your elders. When in one scene Grandpa tries to ship Billy to North Carolina packed in a box at a local shipping store, the ladies assisting him go to great lengths to help him. EVEN AFTER THEY LEARN THERE IS A LITTLE BOY IN THE BOX!

What makes the film special are the moments between the “bits” — when Billy and Grandpa are alone, talking about fishing and the future. You almost forget you’re watching a seriously “R” rated comedy, so endearing are Knoxville and Nicoll. I’d love to see these two characters on screen again.

Blu-ray Review “John Carpenter Presents Body Bags”

“Body Bags” was a made-for-TV anthology that aired on Showtime. Originally it was planned to be a television series, similar to HBO’s “Tales from the Crypt” but never panned out. The film is jam-packed with great genre talent including Mark Hamill (“Star Wars”), Robert Carradine (“Revenge of the Nerds”), Tom Arnold (“True Lies”), Sam Raimi (“Evil Dead”), Stacy Keach (“Up In Smoke”), David Warner (“TRON”) Deborah Harry, Sheena Easton, Twiggy (Member of Marilyn Manson), David Naughton (“An American Werewolf In London”), John Agar (“Tarantula”) and great cameos by Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper and Roger Corman. Overall, this may not be the best anthology but it is still a blast to watch and a must have for any true horror buff.

Official Premise: Two Masters of Horror John Carpenter (“Halloween”, “The Thing”) and Tobe Hooper (“The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, “Lifeforce”) come together to create a chilling anthology of terror. Alex Datcher (“Passenger 57”) stars as a woman working the late shift at The Gas Station while a killer is on the loose. Then, Stacy Keach (“Road Games”) can’t stand the thought of losing his Hair and he’ll do anything to keep it. And finally, Mark Hamill (“Star Wars”) portrays a baseball player that submits to an Eye transplant after he loses an eye in a car accident.

Shout! Factory delivered this film as a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack. The 1080p transfer looks decent for a made-for-TV film and the DTS-HD Master Audio track works with the film’s suspense and score. In terms of special features, there is some great content here for horror fans. There are three audio commentary tracks included, the first is with director John Carpenter and actor Robert Carradine on “The Gas Station”. The second is again with director John Carpenter and joined by actor Stacy Keach on “Hair”. The last with with producer Sandy King on “Eye” and is moderated by Justin Beahm. There are some some great new interviews with John Carpenter, Producer Sandy King and actors Stacy Keach and Robert Carradine. Lastly there is a trailer included as well.

Concert Review: “IMatter Fest and The Gate Presents” Phinehas, My Heart to Fear, Alive in the Dark, Praxia, Take Two

Red Chord Records artist Phinehas brought their 2013 summer tour to The Gate located in the upstate NY town of Horseheads, NY on August 24th. The group who hails from Los Angeles is currently out on tour in support of their newest EP release titled “The Bridge Between”. Though the crowd on hand was of the smaller size all the bands who performed that evening gave their all in an effort to put on a great performance.

Take Two would hit the stage first and though the group experienced a few technical difficulties not of their own doing the local 5 piece punk/rock band forged through like professionals and did what all good openers do by priming the crowd for what was to come later in the night. Praxia another local band from the area would follow with their own unique style of metal core which definitely kicked things up a notch. Advent recording artists Alive in the Dark were up next and started off their set as though they were shot out of a cannon. The band certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves especially drummer Michael Guevarez who donned a creepy yet entertaining unicorn mask for a portion of the set.

Next up were Solid State Records artist My Heart to Fear. The band hails from Williamsport, PA an area probably best known for its baseball history however over the last few years have become a breeding ground for up and coming metal-core acts. Vocalist Trevor Pool worked the crowd in between songs which helped keep the excitement going and even though the bands tour van broke down between shows none of the members let that affect their performance which garnered a great response from the crowd.

Closing out the night were tour headliners Phinehas who put on a stellar performance from start to finish.
Each of the bands four members really put everything they had into the extended set which whipped the crowd in to several good sized circle pits. Guitarist Jason Combs and bassist Bryce Kelley made great use of the stage as they bounced and spun back and forth while delivering the bands crushing material. Drummer Lee Humerian was a show in his self dazzling the crowd with a bevy of stick twirling tricks while vocalist Sean McCulloch put the icing on the cake with his shredding vocals and commandeering stage presence.

I really have to give it to the people who handle The Gate. Not only do they provide a safe and fun environment to play and listen to music but they seem to be the only ones in the area that are doing anything for music fans and performers. Without their dedication to the art of music younger bands and listeners would have little to no chance to perform or experience some of the great music that is out there. Definitely keep up the good work!

I don’t know what it is about Charles Band and his crazy movies at Full Moon but they always draw me in. I have been a fan of these films since I was tall enough (and probably too young) to see them on the video store shelves. This collection comes with nine horror films from three different franchises: Demonic Toys, The Gingerdead Man and Killjoy series. I mean how can you say no to killer toys, cookies and demon clowns? It is really a no-brainer if you are a fan of cheesy yet fun horror films.

Includes the films “Demonic Toys”, “Demonic Toys 2”, “Dollman Vs. Demonic Toys”, “The Gingerdead Man”, “Gingerdead Man 2: Passion Of The Crust”, “Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver”, “Killjoy”, “Killjoy 2: Deliverance From Evil” and “Killjoy 3”. The main concern I have with this release is that it is technically not complete. “Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys” was released in 2004 and is not included here but that is most likely due to the fact that Echo Bridge does not own rights. Also missing is the new “Killjoy Goes to Hell”, which was just released late last year. Nonetheless, it still contains some very fun films and is a real great collection for any fan of Full Moon and Charles Band’s madness.

DEMONIC TOYS: A botched bust on a pair of arms dealers inadvertently leads to the awakening of a demon with the power to bring toys to life as his personal minions. DEMONIC TOYS 2: When an oddball group of characters gather to inspect an ancient puppet, strange things begin to happen. DOLLMAN VS. DEMONIC TOYS: Officer Judith Gray seeks the help of miniature-sized cop, Brick Bardo, and his equally small girlfriend, Nurse Ginger, when she runs into trouble with the evil Toys.

THE GINGERDEAD MAN: When the ashes of a deranged killer make their way into a secret gingerbread cookie mix, a mini-murderer is born. THE GINGERDEAD MAN 2: THE PASSION OF THE CRUST: The deranged cookie murderer “The Gingerdead Man” crashes a movie studio and leaves behind a trail of bloody murder and hilarious mayhem. THE GINGERDEAD MAN 3: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER: The Gingerdead Man travels back in time to a 1976 roller-boogie contest where he causes more chaos than ever before.

KILLJOY: When an outcast is bullied to death, a killer clown exacts revenge in his honor. His name is Killjoy and he thinks murder is a laughing matter. KILLJOY 2: On a wilderness rehabilitation trip, a group of at-risk youth find themselves in the home of a voodoo woman where Killjoy’s spirit is summoned. KILLJOY 3: A group of unsuspecting college students accidentally open the portal to Killjoy’s demon realm and get trapped in a strange funhouse world with the killer clown and his friends.

When it comes to the “Demonic Toys” series, I have always enjoyed each film equally. They are all micro-budgeted but I love the use of the puppets throughout. The first is the best in the series but I do have a special place for “Dollman vs. Demonic Toys”, even though it is barely an hour and focuses a lot of flashbacks. The “Dollman” series has always been one of my favorites and it is fun to see him go against these killer toys! “The Gingerdead Man” is something that cannot enough be described to anyone without being looked at funny. For this series, the best film is the first – did I mention that Gary Busey stars in this? The second and third are both fun but very silly and over-the-top but don’t forget we are talking about a killer gingerbread man. Lastly, the “Killjoy” is a lot of fun. Who isn’t afraid of clowns…even just a little. Killjoy is a great character. The first one is also the best but the second and third are a whole lot of fun as well.

Echo Bridge packed all nine of these films onto to two DVDs, which is quite a lot and I feel that the films themselves do suffer a bit. “Demonic Toys 2” is a pretty rough copy of the film, probably the worst of the bunch. It has a lot of transfer issues throughout. Though that is kind of expected these are not high-def films and where shot very low-budget. Besides the nine films, there are no other special features included on this release but that is expected with a massive 9-film collection like this. Is it worth the price of less than $15? You bet you ass! Don’t miss this release for sure!

Blu-ray Review “Tales From the Crypt Presents: Ritual”

Every since I saw “Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood” back in 1996, I was eagerly waiting for what was next. I heard about “Ritual” but it was shelved due to the ended of the show on HBO and other distribution issues. I waited and waited years to see this film till around 2001, when I believe I got a bootleg online. The result? Well, its just plain ‘ole “Tales from the Crypt” fun. This third film installment of the popular HBO series “Tales From the Crypt” is actually remake of the 1943 film “I Walked with a Zombie”.

Official Synopsis: Jobless after having her medical license revoked, Dr. Alice Dodgson (Jennifer Grey, Dirty Dancing) accepts an offer to travel to Jamaica and treat American Paul Claybourne’s (Craig Sheffer, A River Runs Through It) mysteriously ailing brother. But immediately upon her arrival, Alice finds herself immersed in the exotic rhythm and harmony of this foreign civilization…and besieged by the locals with terrifying tales of zombies and demonic possession. As her long-held faith in science clashes with her new experiences in the supernatural, Alice must ultimately submit to the strange native culture to save her patient, while fighting to escape with her own life. Also starring Tim Curry (Kinsey).

This is the first time that this film has been released on Blu-ray. It looks good but not great. The video is only presented with a 1080i transfer but then again this film has never looked perfect even on DVD (when it finally got poorly released). The audio track is also a decent yet not stunning 2.0 Stereo track. No special features are available on this release. So I would really recommend this to the biggest hardcore fans of “Tales from the Crypt” but otherwise, it is not anything to write home about overall. But for the low-price, you horror fans might consider this a guilty pleasure

In the previous specials he has showcased the following amazing talent including, Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Hart, Tommy Davidson, Mo’Nique and D.L. Hughley. This time around Gary Owen known best for his roles in the film “Think Like A Man” and TV series, Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne”, hosts this latest installment. Shaq has also personally handpicked some of stand-up comedy’s most talented comedians including Capone, Lil’ Duval, Tony Roberts and Jay Pharoah. If you are looking for some laugh-out-loud laughs…look no further.

Media Mikes had the privilege to chat with Gary Owen and he is one of comedy’s best comedians, click here to check it out! “All-Star Comedy Jam – Live from Orlando” was filmed at Hard Rock Live in front of a live audience in Orlando FL and you can just feel the energy during this show. The only bad thing about this release is that it is just over an hour, I would have loved to see this expanded longer. I would have also expected extended sets on the extras. Though they are also not available on the extras. The special features included are a “Backstage Jam” behind-the-scenes featurette, which is some fun stuff. Lastly there are also some trailers included. Hey Shaq, when’s the next one coming out?

Media Mikes Presents “Supernaturalz: Weird, Creepy & Random” Official Trailer

“Supernaturalz: Weird, Creepy & Random” is new horror comedy directed by Kevin Sean Michaels (“Vampira: The Movie”), written and co-produced by Ben Parris (Author of “Wade of Aquitaine”). They film is also produced by non-other than Media Mikes’ own Mike Gencarelli. The film has been a real labor of the love for the last few years from everyone involved and it is finally entering its final stages before 100% completion. Premise for “Supernaturalz: Weird, Creepy & Random”: When Indian magician The Mighty Sardar (Paulson Ambookan) encounters Dawn (Debbie D), a murderess fresh out of jail, she convinces him to find her daughter. Confronted with his own past, Sardar is drawn into a conflict between six girls facing down the gods themselves. Are one of those girls Dawn’s daughter and can Sardar’s exorcism save any of them?

Event Review: Disney On Ice Presents Rockin’ Ever After – Amway Center, Orlando FL

I have been attending Disney on Ice events for about 30 years now and I still enjoy them every time. Now having a daughter of my own (only 3 months old though), I am looking forward to introducing her to this event next year, hopefully just like my parents did for me. “Disney On Ice Presents Rockin’ Ever After” was the perfect event for any little girl…oops sorry, I mean Princess. There were many little princesses all around the Amway Center, I just couldn’t help but thinking about my daughter in those costumes. This event honestly though has been my favorite in many years. There was something about it that just really engaged the audience, yes even the adults too! The songs are just amazing and timeless. I can’t wait to see what they do next with Disney on Ice. I am not sure how they will top this one though?!!

The basis story for the show features Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy introducing different talent as they “compete” to be the next superstar. The princesses that take the spotlight in this show are Ariel, Rapunzel, Belle, and Merida from Disney•Pixar’s BRAVE in her ice debut!. Like I said this show was amped up from last year. There was something about the costumes that just really stood out and shined. I really enjoyed the re-imagination of the characters wardrobe, especially for “The Little Mermaid” section. While on “Little Mermaid”, it stood out from the others being the only part of the show that used non-Disney music. They had a nice blend of 80’s music including Madonna, with the classic songs. “The Little Mermaid” also really stood out for its great use of black light on the environment and its skaters.

I am a huge Rapunzel fan personally, I feel that they did the “Tangled” portion up really well. I thought the way they changed up the “The Ugly Duckling” scene into a dream sequence was very clever. I also really enjoyed the way the lantern scene was presented. Merida from Disney•Pixar’s BRAVE was up next after the intermission in her ice debut! They did a good job of working this section into a story being told by Mickey to his friends. This way they were able to tell the story and leave out the witch and the bear aspects of the film. It really flowed well. Lastly, what better way to end then with “Beauty and the Beast”, one of my favorite films of all time. This story is timeless and always warms your heart. I should note it is also the only one out of the four that included the final showdown between good and evil, or Beast and Gaston in this case. Of course then as usual Mickey and his friends closed the show and what an ending it was. I had a hard time getting up, hoping that there would be more. Oh well, have to wait till next year.

The main draw for me to this release was the three “Dracula” films, all presented by Wes Craven. “Dracula 2000″ was a really clever and fun film. The two “Dracula” sequels are decent but have a direct-to-video feel, still the three together are worth the purchase alone. I was never a huge fan of “They” but it is also a decent bonus to this release. Wes Craven’s name personally to me does not bare much weight recently I feel that he has really lost his street cred…I mean have you see “Scream 4″? Nonetheless, they films are worth purchasing for horror fans, especially for the low cost.

“Dracula 2000” takes the tale of Dracula into the 21 century where a team of techno-savvy thieves break into a vault they find a crypt unopened for 100 years. Dracula is unleashed and wreaks havoc. “Dracula II: Ascension” follows a group of medical students who discover the body of the Dracula and will wish that they hadn’t. “Dracula III: Legacy” follows vampire hunters Father Uffizi and Luke as they follow Dracula back to Eastern Europe they aim to end his reign again. “They” follows a student who experienced night terrors only to find out that the monsters in their closets are real and they are coming for her.

The Blu-ray presentation of these discs are not the greatest like most Echo Bridge multi-feature releases but they are honestly worth it to have these films on Blu-ray. The first two “Dracula” films are the best two films but also the worst presented here. They both included 1080i transfers and are only equipped with Dolby Stereo 2.0 tracks. This is a bit disappointing as they have full 5.1-channel versions on the DVDs. Though “Dracula III” & “They” both are presented in 1080p and both have 5.1 surround tracks. I wish that Echo Bridge will focus on unifying their releases and include 1080p and 5.1 sound on all films in these sets. Fans of these films, will still be happy for these HD upgrades.

Concert Review “94.1 The Zone’s Presents: Rover’s Holiday Hangover”

January 21^st saw the arrival of Rover’s Holiday Hangover featuring Everlast and New Found Glory. The concert was put on by 94.1 The Zone which is one of Rochester NY’s most listened to stations. Like most radio sponsored events the musical line up was somewhat diverse and at times questionable in my opinion however each band put on solid performances for the near capacity crowd.

The Webster, NY based band Falling Forward kicked off the show playing their own blend of melodic infused metal which received a favorable welcome from those who showed up early for the show. Velvet Elvis followed and performed a drawn out set of what I would describe as sludge rock. The band had a couple moments where I questioned if they were at the level to play on such a bill. Clearly stopping their drummer to restart songs is not a plus in my book. The crowd responded to the band with a somewhat lack luster applaud as the band left the stage almost 40 minutes later. Home town favorites Young Bloods took to the stage next and worked the packed hall back into a frenzy that was complete with dozens of flying glowing sticks which were given out by the band prior to the start of their set.

Next to take the stage was thought to be Four Year Strong however due to an illness in the band only two members were able to perform. Prior to the start of their set it was announced that this would be the first time ever that people were going to hear some of their songs performed acoustically. The crowd seemed very thankful that even though the entire band was not present they still cared enough to come out and put on a stellar performance that sounded amazing.

Pop Punk heavy weights New Found Glory followed after a brief intermission and preceded to ignite the crowd into one mosh pit fueled, crowd surfing hodgepodge that had security working overtime. The band played hit after hit along with treating the crowd to a couple classic covers songs by Green Day and The Ramones. Everlast would close out the show playing his own blend of blues infused hip-hop. A quick survey of the crowd made me question the playing order of the night as I noticed quite a few people myself included heading for the doors after only three songs.

Overall Rover’s Holiday Hangover was a decent show. It would have been nice to have a more cohesive line up as I felt it may have held listeners attention better and not made them want to leave early. For a presale price of $10.00 and a door price of $20.00 you really could not complain especially in this day and age. 94.1 The Zone did a great job giving back to their listeners and I am looking forward to attending more of their shows.
