Blu-ray Review “Styx: Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight – Live”

Starring: Styx
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Run Time: 131 minutes

Concert: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

The boys of “Styx” still got it. They still know how to put on an entertaining show and they definitely can still sing and rock out! They might throw in a little extra cheese now and then but that should be expected. This concert was filmed on November 9th, 2010 at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, TN. The whole theme of this show is Styx performing their classic albums “The Grand Illusion” and “Pieces Of Eight” in their entirety for the first time, back to back.

These albums were the pinnacle point in the bands career that brought them to global success. Of course, included in these albums are some great classic songs like “Come Sail Away” and ‘Renegade”. What I also thought was cool was that they are also performing some songs for the first time live. So it is cool to see how they put that together and nail each song. Each member of the band gets a chance to showcase their still existent skills at this concert also and it is very impressive how great they still sound today! Just loose the red hair please, Lawrence Gowan.

The Blu-ray looks decent even though it is only presented in 1080i definition. The concert itself though is very colorful and exciting. It is really a very impressive event that they put together. The sound is also superb and really pushes the limits. Of course great sound should be expected from a concert Blu-ray. There is only one special feature included but it is one really good one. It is called “Putting On The Show” and it is an in-depth look on what it takes to setup for such an epic concert.

“The Swing House Session: Pearl (Live & Acoustic)”
Producer: Jay Ruston
Tracks: 10

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“The Swing House Session: Pearl (Live & Acoustic)” is the latest release from Pearl. The album features 10 acoustic tracks 9 of which were originally featured on Pearl’s 2010 debut release titled “Little Immaculant White Fox”. The 10 tracks on the album were recorded live in one session and feature Pearl, Scott Ian, Jim Wilson, Marcus Blake and Nalle Cole. The session/album was produced by Jay Ruston (The Donnas, Meatloaf).

This album has a really cool laid back vide which I felt was very reminiscent of some of those great mid 60’s era releases. It was almost impossible to tell that this album was created live as the performances are just so seamless. Pearl’s voice is rich and soulful which only adds to the impressive string section compiled for the session. The big stand out track for me was the cover of the classic John Prine song “Angel From Montgomery” while tracks such as “Rock Child” and “Check Out Charlie” also transferred really well into acoustic form. Fans of Pearl’s rock album and fans of acoustic music in general will surely want to take a listen to this album.

Track Listing:
1.) Check Out Charlie
2.) Love Pyre
3.) Rock Child
4.) Worth Defending
5.) Mama
6.) My Heart Isn’t in It
7.) Angel From Montgomery
8.) Nobody
9.) Whore
10.) Anything

XBOX Live Game Review “Trine 2”

Developer: Frozenbyte
Publisher: Atlus
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade
Release Date: December 21, 2011

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Trine 2? is a platform style fantasy game where you navigate physics based puzzles while utilizing the special skills of all three characters, called “Hero’s”. The first thing that turned me on to this game was its absolute beauty. I love games with a lot of color and detail, especially fantasy games, and this game definitely meets and exceeds expectations in that area. The graphics are skillfully detailed with brilliant colors without going overboard. Characters are simple yet elegant, and nearly everything is interactive. The background and foreground blend so well that I often found myself trying to interact with an object that was only in the background.

The music is very beautiful, changing smoothly and often so as not to become too monotonous, but it also doesn’t overpower the game play. The music segway is perfect when game play changes from puzzle exploration into combat with an enemy without distracting you. Overall the soundtrack is not very notable, however I think it is a terrific compliment to “Trine 2?. The game controls and learning how to navigate was at first a little bit of an effort, but once you get the hang of it you can move smoothly through the game. Other than a very slight lag in the controls when jumping around, you can easily overcome it with a little practice. “Trine 2? controls remain basic throughout the game, keeping it simple enough that should you go an extended period of time without playing you should be able to pick it up again with ease and jump right into game play.

The story line keeps to the basics as well, giving you little more than the necessarily information needed while loading the next level. While it does have a warning about “fantasy blood and violence” when you first load, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be perfectly fine for children 7 and up to play since what blood there is during battles is very subtle and the violence is very minimal.

The main characters are Amadeus the Wizard, with the power to conjure boxes and planks, and to move objects and enemies; Pontius the Knight that fights off enemies with a sword and shield, and a hammer that he can also smash some objects and obstacles; and Zoya the Thief with a grappling hook for easier navigation through areas by swinging from wood objects.

To be honest I had never heard of this game or it’s predecessor before but for the low price, amazing graphics and details, smooth game play and puzzles, I think it is definitely worth it. The puzzles do tend to get a little frustrating at times but with persistence you can often find multiple solutions to move on. I played both the full version on XBOX and the demo version on the PC and I would have to say I proffered it on the XBOX; navigation seemed easier, but then that could be because I personally favor console games to PC anyway.

I give this game 3.5 out of 5 stars; I would give it a higher rating but the slight delay in controls was frustrating, adding a bit to the difficulty I had with some of the puzzles. For anyone who likes puzzle games I would definitely recommend “Trine 2?, the puzzles are intricate and detailed, leaving several solutions available to the player.

CD Review: Yes “In The Present- Live From Lyon”

Frontiers Records
Tracks: 13

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

“In The Present-Live From Lyon” is the latest live release from the classic rock group Yes. The album was recorded during the bands performance in Lyon, France on December 1st, 2009. The album is being released on Frontier Records as a 2 CD/DVD combo as well as a 3 LP set featuring a limited edition gatefold sleeve.

Yes are no strangers to the live album concept as this is the bands 5th live release since their inception in 1968. “In The Present- Live From Lyon” is packed full of classic Yes tunes from all era’s of the bands career. Tracks such as “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart” are featured on this 2 CD or 3 LP release. Vinyl purists should take note that the 3 LP versions do not include the 55 min. DVD which accompanies the 2 CD version of the album. However the vinyl release does feature a limited edition gatefold sleeve.

I found the recordings contained on “In The Present- Live From Lyon” to be missing some of their drive. Each of the 14 tracks sounded very thin and lacked bass and definition. Historically Live albums are just as they say…Live which can account for diminished sound qualities. However in today’s day world live recording technology allows almost as much flexibility as a studio setting. I think a lot more could have been done to increase the bands over all sound. It really is just a shame that such great playing is over shadowed by poor sound quality. That aside diehard yes fans will still want to add this release to their collections.

Blu-ray Review “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls – Live in Texas ’78”

Starring: The Rolling Stones
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Running time 105 minutes

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars

I remember listening to the cassette of “Some Girls” with my uncle back in the late 80’s. It is definitely considered by fans to be one of The Rolling Stones’ very best. This concert was the bands 1978 tour to support the album and it was the time when the album had hit the #1 spot on the US charts. The concert was filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 18th, 1978. The concert was really featured the band focusing on their music with little or no focus on its staging, though The Rolling Stones still deliver a very energetic performance.

The Blu-ray release for this concert is really clear and crisp. The footage was originally shot on 16mm film and has been restored, remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original tapes. The sound is very clear and definitely sounds great on the Blu-ray. The movie features many classics including “Honky Tonk Woman”, “Tumbling Dice”, “Brown Sugar”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, “Miss You” and “Beast of Burden”. If you are fan of the Stones, this is definitely a no-brainer and a great opportunity to see the band its prime peak.

There are tons of great bonus features included on this release as well. There is a newly filmed interview with Mick Jagger, which is very fun. There is a great sketch from Saturday Night Live, October 1978, featuring Dan Aykroyd as Tom Snyder interviewing Mick Jagger. It is very funny and a fantastic feature. Also included from Saturday Night Live and introduced by Laraine Newman is “Shattered”, “Respectable” and “Beast Of Burden”. There are excerpts from a ABC 20/20 Special, introduced by Hugh Downs with interviews by Geraldo Rivera from June 1978/ This includes interviews with Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Bill. Lastly there is another interview with Mick from Aug 2011 conducted in France. The interview runs about 15 minutes and honestly, I could listen to Mick talk for hours. Great features overall for a great release. Congrats Eagle Rock Entertainment for delivering again.

Blu-ray Review “Deep Purple + Orchestra: Live At Montreux 2011”

Directed by: Stephen “BK” Bentley-Klein
Starring: Deep Purple
Rating: Unrated
Run Time: 115 Mins.
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love rocking out to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”? Such a great track. This Blu-ray was recorded on the closing night of Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival on July 16, 2011. The band re-invented their classic catalog with the help of a symphony orchestra. This is common for recent bands to do like Metallica, Kansas and Queensryche. I really enjoy the new take on great classics that playing with an orchestra presents. These guys still know how to deliver an entertaining concert. Overall this is a must for fans of Deep Purple, especially if your want to catch their classics with a twist.

The Blu-Ray release looks visually great even in 1080i video presentation. The sound also delivers these tracks perfectly in it DTS-HD surround sound track. Some of the great classic included on this concert is “Highway Star”, “Strange Kind of Woman,” “Lazy,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Hush,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Black Night,” and “Smoke On The Water”. I think the orchestra really adds a new twist on these songs and the band Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums), Roger Glover (bass), Steve Morse (guitar) and Don Airey (keyboards) really seemed to be getting into it along with them.

The concert runs a decent 115-minutes and includes a great theatrical presence from the band. It shows that Deep Purple can still deliver some hardcore kick ass classic rock. There is great in depth interview included on the Blu-ray which has the band chatting about their music and the tour. It is very informative and definitely worth checking out. Whether you are Deep Purple biggest fans or just finding out about them (Thanks to the video game “Rock Band”), this is definitely worth checking out.

TRACK LISTING:
1) Orchestral Intro
2) Highway Star
3) Hard Loving Man
4) Maybe I m A Leo

Blu-ray Review “Usher: OMG Tour- Live From London”

Starring: Usher
Rating: Unrated
Run Time: 104 Mins.
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I have never been a BIG fan of Usher’s music, but I am not denying that he is the reigning King Of R ‘N B. He album sales are in the multi-millions and he is known all the around the world. This concert was filmed in high definition at London s O2 Arena in the spring of 2011. The “OMG Tour” was to support Usher’s recent chart topping “Raymond V Raymond” album. One thing you gotta give to this show and to Usher himself is that the guy knows how to put on a show. The show is more like a stage production with fantastic lighting and amazing pyrotechnics. He also pulls a Madonna and Cher with multiple costume changes. The show also boosts some really intense and fascinating choreography, which gives the show the amped up production that actually tells a story.

The picture on this Blu-ray is clear and even though it is only 1080i (like most music Blu-rays), it looks really good. The audio is key for a music Blu-ray and this one packed a solid DTS HD Master Audio track. It is very impressive and the songs sound great. If you like his early hits you got “You Make Me Wanna”), he also includes his ballads like “Nice & Slow”, love songs with “There Goes My Baby” and of course the big hits with “Yeah”. Usher is not just a singer he is a performer and he does a decent job in this show to entertain his audience. If you are an fan of his music than this disc is a new-brainer. If you are not a big fan, like me, this might make you one.

There are some decent bonus features on this release as well including a very interesting behind the scenes look in “On The Shoulder Of Giants”. It focuses on Usher and his team as they put together the show. Also included is a short piece about Usher’s New Look Foundation in London called “New Look”. Overall this is a pretty impressive release and it has been very enjoyable to check out.

Blu-ray Review “Lindsey Buckingham: Songs From the Small Machine- Live in L.A.”

Starring: Lindsey Buckingham
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Running Time: 125 mins

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

Who does know and love Fleetwood Mac? Growing up I remember listening to them with my father, who still has a thing for Stevie Nicks. This concert was filmed in high-definition at The Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, California in April 2011 and is packed with amazing DTS Surround-Sound track. The sound was great and delivers some great new and old tunes. The video resolution was really great and very clear. It is hard when watching a concert on the TV then watching it live. This does a pretty good job and pulling you into the show and right into the action.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Famer Lindsey Buckingham, male lead singer for Fleetwood Mac, delivers a fun concert and a great presentation on Blu-ray. Since he is solo, it is not unexpected that he performs his new songs (some which kick some ass) and he plays some hits from Fleetwood Mac days. The guy really knows how to play the guitar, both acoustic and electric. The concert was almost split into two different shows with Lindsey and his guitar alone for the first couple of songs then he brings in the the rest of the band. They definitely kick up the energy and deliver a fun show. Picking up this release is a real no brainer for fans of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham.

The concerts set list includes the following songs:
“Shut Us Down”
“Go Insane”
“Trouble”
“Never Going Back Again”
“Big Love”
“Under the Skin”
“All My Sorrows”
“In Our Own Time”
“Illumination”
“Second Hand News”
“Tusk”
“Stars Are Crazy”
“End of Time”
“That’s the Way Love Goes”
“I’m So Afraid”
“Go Your Own Way”
“Turn It On”
“Treason”
“Seeds We Sow”

3D Blu-Ray Review “Peter Gabriel: New Blood- Live in London”

Starring: Peter Gabriel
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Running Time: 162 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I grew up listening to Genesis before and after Peter Gabriel left the band. So I have always been a fan and this concert aims right at that fan in me and I am sure other. It was filmed at Hammersmith Apollo in March 2011. It features Peter Gabriel performing live with a 46 piece Orchestra. This concert covers versions from his “Scratch My Back” album and also touches on classic tracks from his solo career but in brand new orchestral arrangements. I think the orchestral arrangement really adds an interesting aspect his his songs. It reminds me of when Metallica went on tour with an orchestra almost makes it feel like new spin on classic music.

Of course I have to comment on the presentation of this disc. It looks really great in 3D and works well for this concert. I think they did a really great job with it. The video is really clear and the sound is extraordinary. The special feature includes on the disc is called “Blood Donors”, which is a documentary on the making of the “New Blood” concert. It is worth the watch as it shows how much really went into this event. If you are a fan of Peter Gabriel, this is a must purchase especially if you can experience this is 3D.

The concert’s set list features over twenty songs:
“Intruder”
“Wallflower”
“The Boy In The Bubble”
“Après Moi”
“The Drop”
“Washing Of The Water”
“The Book Of Love”
“Darkness”
“The Power Of The Heart”
“Biko”
“San Jacinto”
“Digging In The Dirt”
“Signal To Noise”
“Downside Up”
“Mercy Street”
“The Rhythm Of The Heat”
“Blood Of Eden”
“Red Rain”
“Solsbury Hill”
“In Your Eyes”
“Don’t Give Up”
“The Nest That Sailed The Sky”

DVD Review “Ray Charles: Live in France 1961”

Directed by: Jean-Christophe Averty
Starring: Ray Charles
Distributed by: Eagle Vision Entertainment
Running Time: 111 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

This DVD consists of concert footage from the 1961 Antibes Jazz Festival that has been lost for the last 50 years. These newly discovery concerts add up to about an hour and 45 minutes of footage. Just to be able to watch this is considered a treat. The footage was transferred and restored from its original 16mm and really looks great for what it is. I love Ray Charles and his music is just genius. This early concert with him is a great insight into his music prior to being a legendary star.

The concerts from the 1961 Antibes Jazz Festival are split over two days July 18th and July 22nd, 1961. Some of the tracks included are “Let the Good Times Roll”, “Georgia on My Mind”, “Sticks and Stones” and “Hallelujah, I Love Her So”. Since it is two different concerts over two days there are some duplicate songs from each day. There are also some bonus tracks includes on this disc from July 19th and July 21st, 1961, including “The Story”, “Yes Indeed”, “I Believe My Soul”, “What’d I Say”, “Wonder”. Also notable included on this disc is Nat King Cole track “With You On My Mind”, which is a song that Ray never recorded.

It is amazing getting to watch Ray Charles perform especially on the old black and white 16mm transferred film. His band is also really great to listen to especially the Raeletts. These concerts in France are the first time that Ray Charles has performed in Europe. The DVD case and inserts are very impressive as well. Lately these days little goes into the sleeve-art and pamphlet. The pamphlet is an informational and colorful 15 pages.  This is definitely worth the purchase and I recommend it for sure.
