The London Film Industry Remains Resilient During the COVID19 pandemic

The London Film Ind

COVID-19 posed a significant threat to global cinema chains and studios with its potential to decimate box office profits. Cinemas closed their doors, governments placed restrictions on large gatherings and people were advised to stay home.

However, the video production London industry managed to remain resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic and the different challenges it provided for the film industry to overcome.

How Has the Pandemic Affected the industry?

The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the global film industry. Many blockbusters and new releases were postponed or even cancelled altogether due to concerns over health risks associated with large gatherings of people in movie theatres.

How has the Industry recovered?

More people are turning to streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime for entertainment, which has had a significant impact on cinemas around the world.

However, film studios are taking the following steps to that assist in managing the success of the London film industry:

  • Careful filming at restricted locations

Wherever possible, studios are utilising to great effect the vacant train stations that are available around London.

With these unused stations, it provides a great avenue for filming important scenes without any interruptions from the public since these stations will be off-limits and not be able to be used for public use, meaning that public mass crowd gatherings can be avoided preventing COVID from being spread.

One of the most famous underground stations that are no longer in public use is Aldwych and previous films that have been filmed at that station include 28 Weeks Later, Darkest Hour, and V for Vendetta

  • Using green screen technology

In cases where social distancing is not possible, studios are using green screen technology to create indoor scenes. This allows them to continue production without having to worry about the potential health risks associated with COVID19.

  • More content for television

Many studios have also begun producing more content for television rather than cinema screens – which means that they are no longer reliant on box office revenue alone.

This has been welcomed by many as an important step forward for British filmmakers who are struggling during these difficult times.

Why is London a key relocation destination?

London is a global centre for media and entertainment, with a rich history of filmmaking. The city has a large pool of talented workers and world-class production facilities.

London has so many talented people with creative skills and the film industry has reacted to the pandemic by providing new opportunities to help train people who were badly affected by the pandemic.

Neil Peplow, BFI director of industry and international affairs, said “At the moment we’re seeing a range of skills that we need in production management and accountancy.

We’re looking at how we can retrain people who are already in these areas because there are lots of shared skill sets with industries which may have been more significantly impacted in terms of job growth than ours.”

An example of successful skills retraining can be demonstrated in Pinewood Studios’ scheme in conjunction with the Department of Work and Pensions to help retrain people from the aviation industry to work in the film industry.

Final Thoughts

Netflix and Amazon Prime’s streaming services have seen a significant rise in use over the past year as people have cut back on going out and seeing films at their local cinemas.

Many studios are taking advantage of this by still producing high-quality content to cater for this trend. With access to streaming services higher than ever before, the opportunities are endless for studios to continue to create quality content across genres to appeal to their target audiences.

London has many filming benefits and has helped maintain the city to become a constant hub for media and entertainment.

Veronika London talks about modeling and being an actress

Veronika London is a model and an actress. She has been called “The Megan Fox of Canada”. She recently co-stared in the film “Searching for Angels” with Vivica A. Fox. Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Veronika about her work and what we can expect next.

Mike Gencarelli: You have been called “The Megan Fox of Canada”, what do you enjoy most being known as a sex symbol?
Veronika London: I have to admit the attention is fun and I find it rather interesting how marketing and sex can rule the world if played right. If anything I’m just happy that I’m comfortable and confident enough to play by my rules and exploit my desires. If the bi product is being a sex symbol- then so be it- lol

MG: Going from modeling in magazines like FHM and Maxim to TV/film, how do you compare?
VL: Longer hours and more of a mental, physical and emotional challenge. The best scenes are those when you open a personal can of worms that was locked in the vault and leak the raw emotion of the specific moment on camera for the first few times through a script (someone else words but ur truth) . Now that’s magic-

MG: Tell us about your role in film “Searching for Angels” with Vivica A. Fox?
VL: I played Angel who was an amnesiac heroin addict. My performance was tabbed as being similar to Angelina Jolie’s in Gia which was a great compliment. I am a fan of her. SFA became a form of therapy- I love dark intense roles.

MG: How did you prepare for this very intense role?
VL: I watched alot of intervention and associated with people with addiction, memory loss and those that worked the red light district before production to really pick up the mannerisms.

MG: What do you have planned next?
VL: I have recently finished working on the feature film called “No One Will Notice.” I’m starring in it with Joseph Cannata and Erik Fellows from Days of Our Lives. It’s very Dexter but with a bigger twist. My character lives in a dark world. She’s very detached, empty and damaged. (The usual heavy dramatic role). Also a clothing like called VKN is in the early pipeline stages for which the tagline is “Desire Inspired Elegance.” In addition a collaboration with Visalus has come about. I was first introduced to the product when I broke my ankle as a way to stay in shape and did it ever work. I did simple movements, did the 69/31 eating lifestyle and was able to keep shooting during the months that I was in a cast.

Blu-ray Review “Usher: OMG Tour- Live From London”

Starring: Usher
Rating: Unrated
Run Time: 104 Mins.
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I have never been a BIG fan of Usher’s music, but I am not denying that he is the reigning King Of R ‘N B. He album sales are in the multi-millions and he is known all the around the world. This concert was filmed in high definition at London s O2 Arena in the spring of 2011. The “OMG Tour” was to support Usher’s recent chart topping “Raymond V Raymond” album. One thing you gotta give to this show and to Usher himself is that the guy knows how to put on a show. The show is more like a stage production with fantastic lighting and amazing pyrotechnics. He also pulls a Madonna and Cher with multiple costume changes. The show also boosts some really intense and fascinating choreography, which gives the show the amped up production that actually tells a story.

The picture on this Blu-ray is clear and even though it is only 1080i (like most music Blu-rays), it looks really good. The audio is key for a music Blu-ray and this one packed a solid DTS HD Master Audio track. It is very impressive and the songs sound great. If you like his early hits you got “You Make Me Wanna”), he also includes his ballads like “Nice & Slow”, love songs with “There Goes My Baby” and of course the big hits with “Yeah”. Usher is not just a singer he is a performer and he does a decent job in this show to entertain his audience. If you are an fan of his music than this disc is a new-brainer. If you are not a big fan, like me, this might make you one.

There are some decent bonus features on this release as well including a very interesting behind the scenes look in “On The Shoulder Of Giants”. It focuses on Usher and his team as they put together the show. Also included is a short piece about Usher’s New Look Foundation in London called “New Look”. Overall this is a pretty impressive release and it has been very enjoyable to check out.

3D Blu-Ray Review “Peter Gabriel: New Blood- Live in London”

Starring: Peter Gabriel
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Running Time: 162 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I grew up listening to Genesis before and after Peter Gabriel left the band. So I have always been a fan and this concert aims right at that fan in me and I am sure other. It was filmed at Hammersmith Apollo in March 2011. It features Peter Gabriel performing live with a 46 piece Orchestra. This concert covers versions from his “Scratch My Back” album and also touches on classic tracks from his solo career but in brand new orchestral arrangements. I think the orchestral arrangement really adds an interesting aspect his his songs. It reminds me of when Metallica went on tour with an orchestra almost makes it feel like new spin on classic music.

Of course I have to comment on the presentation of this disc. It looks really great in 3D and works well for this concert. I think they did a really great job with it. The video is really clear and the sound is extraordinary. The special feature includes on the disc is called “Blood Donors”, which is a documentary on the making of the “New Blood” concert. It is worth the watch as it shows how much really went into this event. If you are a fan of Peter Gabriel, this is a must purchase especially if you can experience this is 3D.

The concert’s set list features over twenty songs:
“Intruder”
“Wallflower”
“The Boy In The Bubble”
“Après Moi”
“The Drop”
“Washing Of The Water”
“The Book Of Love”
“Darkness”
“The Power Of The Heart”
“Biko”
“San Jacinto”
“Digging In The Dirt”
“Signal To Noise”
“Downside Up”
“Mercy Street”
“The Rhythm Of The Heat”
“Blood Of Eden”
“Red Rain”
“Solsbury Hill”
“In Your Eyes”
“Don’t Give Up”
“The Nest That Sailed The Sky”

A sexy summer weekend turns into a blood-soaked nightmare for a group of college students trapped on an island surrounded by voracious underwater predators in Shark Night 3D, a terrifying thrill ride from director David Ellis (The Final Destination, Snakes On a Plane), featuring a red-hot young cast including Sara Paxton (Superhero Movie, Last House on the Left), Dustin Milligan (“90210,” Slither), Chris Carmack (“The O.C.”), Joel David Moore (Avatar), Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Katharine McPhee (The House Bunny).

Arriving by boat at her family’s Louisiana lake island cabin, Sara (Sara Paxton) and her friends quickly strip down to their swimsuits for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when star football player Malik (Sinqua Walls) stumbles from the salt-water lake with his arm torn off, the party mood quickly evaporates. Assuming the injury was caused by a freak wake-boarding accident, the group realizes they have to get Malik to a hospital on the other side of the lake, and fast.
But as they set out in a tiny speedboat, the college friends discover the lake has been stocked with hundreds of massive, flesh-eating sharks! As they face one grisly death after another, Sara and the others struggle desperately to fend off the sharks, get help and stay alive long enough to reach the safety of dry land.
