Interview with Bridgit Mendler

Bridgit Mendler is known best for here role of Teddy Duncan on Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie”.  She also starred in Disney Channel’s recent hit movie “Lemonade Mouth” and also appeared on “Wizard of Waverly Place”.  Bridget is currently promoting her role of voicing Arrietty in Disney’s “The Secret World of Arrietty”.  Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Bridgit about voicing the character and she also revealed some update for this coming season of “Good Luck Charlie”.

Mike Gencarelli: What did you enjoy most about voicing Arrietty in “The Secret World of Arrietty”?
Bridgit Mendler: I really enjoyed voicing that character. It’s always fun to play a character that is different from you. Arrietty is really fun to explore because she is so small and has a different perspective of the world. I wasn’t physically in any of her world I was able to use my imagination to be able to do that.

MG: Have you seen the Japanese version of the film and how do you feel it translates to US audiences?
BM: I have. I think there is a good chance for this film as Studio Ghibli has released some other films in the states. The film has a really great Japanese style to the animation and storyline however the characters are voiced by American actors. In this case a lot of comedic actors are doing the voices which I think lightens the movie and makes it more accessible to American audiences. This is really fun because you get something visually that you may not be accustomed to but the voices are familiar.

MG: What was the most challenging part of doing the voice work?
BM: I would have to say the dubbing. It was a fun challenge though and it really wasn’t that bad. We had to just match up our lines with the animation which was already there but with Japanese language. They sometimes had to adjust what we were saying so that everything matched up. It was a fun challenge overall.

MG: How long did it take to record your work on the film?
BM: I finished the movie in just three days.  Yep, those are the benefits of working on an animated film.

MG: I am a big fan of the film’s music, like “Arrietty’s Song” by Cécile Corbel. Since you are no stranger to music, tell us about your song for the film?
BM: The interesting thing about the song I did in the movie, called “Summertime”, was that I had worked on it prior to starting on the film. It was already there and was something they listened to and saw potential for. It was really thanks to the producer for how it fits in with the movie. I was very happy to include the song and they did a great job matching up the sound.

MG: You worked again with “Wizard of Waverly Place” co-star David Henrie, did you record together?
BM: We weren’t. I didn’t get to work with anyone else from the cast. It was kind of a bummer because the cast is really cool. It’s an interesting way to go about the project as it allows for a lot of imagination and personal attention for each actor.

MG: Are you a fan of any other Studio Ghibli films?
BM: Of course! I think the most popular one would have to be “Spirited Away”. When I was younger I was a big fan of their films as well. “Kiki’s Delivery Service” was one of my personal favorites.

MG: When can we expect your debut album through Hollywood Records?
BM: I am telling people it will be out around June or July. The challenge is I am shooting “Good Luck Charlie” at the same time. The album isn’t able to be my primary focus because I have other commitments. But the album will be out this year and I am very excited for everyone to hear it.

MG: What can we expect from the third season of “Good Luck Charlie”?
BM: For those who have followed the show, in the recent “Good Luck Charlie” movie there is a pregnancy. In season 3, you are going to see her dealing with the pregnancy. We actually just shot the episode where the new baby arrives. It’s an exciting time for the Duncan family and we are glad to share it with the viewers.

This film is the latest from Japan’s Studio Ghibli, releasing under Walt Disney Pictures, like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle”. The film is loosely based on Mary Norton’s novel “The Borrowers” and was co-written by the legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. If you are fan of Ghibli films then you will see Miyazaki’s hands all throughout this film. Hiromasa Yonebayashi is making his directorial debut with this film, also becoming the youngest director of a Studio Ghibli film, but don’t worry it is beautifully done and perfectly executed. I have been a fan of Ghibli’s films for over 20 years and this is by far one of the best to come out in recent years. This will entertain families both old and young with its extremely vibrant animation and overall fun story. It will also easily be a runner for Best Animated Picture in next year’s Oscars.

The story tells the tale of a family of four-inch-tall people, called Borrowers, who live hidden about the humans or beans as they are called in the film. They survive by borrowing only what they need to survive and only items that will not be missed. On the first night that the young girl Arrietty (Mendler) goes borrowing with her father, they are spotted by a bean and their lives will never be the same. The human is a sick young boy named Shawn, that is very sweet and friendly. Unfortunately, his Great Aunt Hara does not have the same feeling and seeks to have them captured.

The film was originally voiced by Japanese actors but Disney made sure to get an all-star cast for it’s English dubbing. Bridgit Mendler, known best for her role in Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie”, is a perfect fit for Arrietty. She is very sweet and really does the role justice. Another Disney Channel alumni from “Wizard of Waverly Place”, David Henrie voices Shawn (changed from Shô in the Japanese release). He is soft spoken, gentle and well performed overall. Amy Poehler playing Arrietty’s mother, Homily and Carol Burnett playing the Great Aunt Hara really nail the comedy in the film and really bring the funny. The kids will love their jokes the most.

What I like most about Studio Ghibli films is that they do not rush and I will explain what I mean. When they approach a scene, they take their time and let it develop. If there is a close up on a character it is subtle, still and packs real emotion. The colors in the film are so sharp and the animation is so beautifully drawn. It is very refreshing to watch a hand drawn animation, especially with all the perfectly polished CG animated films as of late. I would like to close with my favorite part of the film…it’s score. It is honestly one my favorite scores that I have heard in a while. It is written and performed by the very talented French singer/songwriter, Cécile Corbel. She also wrote the film’s theme song “Arrietty’s Song”, which is nothing short of breathtaking. Fans of Studio Ghibli and all animation in general need to check out this film immediately and enjoy its simplicity and beauty.

Film Review “This Means War”

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy
Directed by: McG
Rated: PG 13
Running time: 1 hour 38 mins
20th Century Fox

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Last week’s “Safe House” gave us a pair of spies that got down and dirty. This week, the boys from the C.I.A. are much more glamorous.

High atop a Hong Kong skyscraper, FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are on a mission. They’re assignment is to capture an elusive baddie named Heinrich (Til Schweiger) as covertly as they can. Too bad neither of them seem to understand the word “covert.”

Smartly written and cleverly directed by action maestro McG, “This Means War” is a fine combination of romance and comedy with a little bit of action thrown in for good measure. As best friends and partners, Pine and Hardy have a natural chemistry and obvious comradeship that radiates from the screen. Pine, with the same “bad boy” twinkle in his eyes that made him a perfect Captain Kirk in “Star Trek,” plays FDR as the typical free and easy bachelor. He has a sweet sports car and a sweeter apartment (apparently the spy game pays very well). His cover identity is that of a cruise ship captain, which allows him to be anywhere in the world at anytime. As divorced dad Tuck (his ex-wife couldn’t believe she married the only travel agent that actually travels), Hardy shows another facet of his talent by proving himself a gifted comedian. I really can’t rave any more about Tom Hardy then I did last year in my review of “Warrior.” Suffice it to say this guy can apparently do it all.

Bored with his personal life, Tuck arranges to meet Lauren (Witherspoon) after seeing her on an Internet dating site. The meeting goes well but, as she’s heading home, Lauren meets FDR in a video store. Soon, unknowingly, both men find themselves infatuated with the same woman. When they discover this, they use the agency and their underlings to spy on Lauren. They agree to a gentleman’s bet, vowing to step aside if Lauren shows feelings for the other. But as each man find himself drawn to Lauren the lengths they will go to in order to win her heart grow more and more ridiculous. Soon the two are more interested in topping one another than finding the dastardly Heinrich. But not to worry… Mr. Heinrich will find them.

McG has done some amazing action work in films like “Terminator Salvation” and the “Charlie’s Angels” series. Here, like in “We Are Marshall,” he finds the human side of the camera, inviting us to meet and enjoy being around these characters. But that’s not to say that the action-crazy McG isn’t in the house! He’s here…and in as fine a form as ever.

The supporting cast also does well, especially Angela Bassett as the two friends’ boss and Chelsea Handler as Lauren’s friend and advice giver. I’ve read that some of Handler’s more “R” – rated comments were cut from the film to ensure the “PG 13” rating. May have to wait for the DVD to hear what I missed.

Disney Junior reflects the emotional connection generations of consumers have to Disney storytelling and Disney characters, both classic and contemporary. It invites mom and dad to join their child in the Disney experience of magical, musical and heartfelt stories and characters, while incorporating specific learning and development themes designed for kids age 2-7. Disney Junior’s animated and live action series blend Disney’s unparalleled storytelling and characters kids love deeply with learning, including early math, language skills, healthy eating and lifestyles, and social skills. Disney Junior launched in February 2011 with a daily programming block on Disney Channel. In its first year, Disney Junior posted the network’s biggest yearly audience in the daypart in Total Viewers, Kids 2-5, Boys 2-5 and Women 18-49 and increased by double-digit margins among preschooler demographics over year-ago levels. On March 23, 2012 Disney Junior will add a basic cable and satellite channel in the U.S.

Interview with The Crystal Method’s Ken Jordan

Ken Jordan is one half of the musical team know as The Crystal Method. The group recently appeared in the documentary film “Re:Generation” and is currently working on a new EP. Media Mikes had a chance to talk with Ken recently about the groups products.

Adam Lawton: How did you first get involved with being in “Re:Generation”?
Ken Jordan: Sometime after the Coachella Festival last year we started talking about the idea. We like to jump on any opportunity that shows what we do and helps get our music out to people who might not normally discover it. The chance to be in what looked to be a really good film was very appealing to us. We were comfortable with doing the collaboration as R&B, Funk and Soul has always been a major influence to us. We were very excited to work in those genres. Working with Martha Reeves was really exciting for us.

AL: Was it hard working with the camera around all the time?
KJ: You get your little microphone attached to you and after awhile you forget about it. They were as un-intrusive as they could be. Eventually we got comfortable with them. We weren’t acting or anything so we just focused on making a good song.

AL: Did you find working on the different material changed your writing style at all?
KJ: It was different working with Martha in that way. We had originally thought we needed to deliver the song with completed lyrics and Martha would sing those. However she was not interested in doing that. We were sort of late to deliver the lyrics as we wanted to travel around Detroit and let the lyrics take on a shape of their own. We sprung them on her at the last minute which caused a little bit of conflict. Really all she wanted to do was protect Detroit and didn’t want to sing anything she wasn’t comfortable with. Over all it was a really easy process working with her. I think if we had to do it again we would work out all the lyrics ahead of time with Martha. I do think though that the way things worked out was for the best.

AL: What did you enjoy most about working on the project?
KJ: The whole experience of getting to know Detroit was great. Some of the things we saw during that time we will never forget. When they were tearing down the Ford Theater some of the crew got chunks of the black facade and we all signed each others chunk. We all have a nice souvenir from that. Getting to know Detroit through Martha’s eyes is something we will always keep with us.

AL: Can you tell us about your upcoming EP release?
KJ: The new EP is going to be titled “Sling the Decks” and it should be out this spring. We currently have one tracked titled and are working on the others. We also are working on a single that incorporates elements from a rock super group. That project is still in the early stages but it will be out this year as well.

3D Blu-ray Review “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”

Directed by: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Josh Duhamel
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Distributed by: Paramount Home Entertainment
Running Time: 154 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 5 out of 5 stars

The “Transformers” series has really turned into a love it or hate it series. Fans have been doing nothing but fighting Michael Bay after the very over-producing and story lacking “Revenge of the Fallen”. “Dark of the Moon” definitely makes up for some the mistakes of the film prior but also presents a few new issues of its own. The major issue is that film needs to be a least 30 minutes shorter. When I originally saw this film in 3D IMAX, I wasn’t completely in love with the film at first. After letting it sit a while and especially watching it at home, I had a chance to really enjoy it a lot more.

The Blu-ray presentation on this release is absolutely fantastic. This honestly has to be THE most action packed Blu-ray in my library and also the best use of a Blu-ray to date. This film’s audio track also shines boasting Paramount’s Dolby TrueHD 7.1, easily one of the best I have ever heard on Blu-ray…and almost blew up my surround sound. The 3D on the Blu-ray really works well with the film since it was actually filmed in native 3D. There are no cheap tricks used in this film with the effect. I actually enjoyed the 3D quite more at home then in the theaters and thought it was a lot more focused. The story, well, that’s a another story but by this time in the series I think we have come to understand that these are movies about robots and visual effects.

Let’s discuss the other details of the release besides the 3D Blu-ray. This set also includes a Blu-ray disc of the film in 2D, as well as DVD disc. I am a big fan of the new digital copy service called, Ultraviolet. If you haven’t took advantage of this amazing digital streaming service, this is the film to start with.

The special features on this release are out of control and jam packed. The biggest feature on the release is “Above and Beyond: Exploring Dark of the Moon” is a super extensive five-part documentary that runs about two hours. The really dive deep into the development of the film ranging from the design to location filming to the stunts to the amazing post-production.  The next feature “Uncharted Territory: NASA’s Future Then and Now” runs about 30 minutes and focuses on exactly what its title suggests, no surprise here. “Deconstructing Chicago: Multi-Angle Sequences” is a visual effects featurette that is split in two parts.  The first is called “Previsualizations”, which allows you to view the visual effects raw with optional commentary by Director Michael Bay and Previsualization Supervisor Steve Yamamoto.  The second part is called “Visual Effects” which breaks down the VFX shots and also includes optional commentary by Visual Effects Supervisors Scott Farrar and Matthew Butler.  Both these features are able to be viewed individually or side-by-side with the final shots. “The Art of Cybertron” is a collection of still focusing on the world of the alien robots. “The Dark of the Moon Archive” is another production feature focusing on the 3D, the Moscow World Premiere and the stunt performers.  “The Sound of ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon'” is focused on the film’s sound engineering, which scores the film two Oscar nominations in Sound Mixing and Editing. Lastly there is a collection of teasers/trailers and other promotional material in “The Matrix of Marketing”. Overall amazing extras for an amazing release.

It is rare that a film gets better with each viewing but “Insight” manages to do that.  Even though you know the twists, they still are able to entertain and surprise you.  The story is driven by a great script and a strong cast. The film is a non-stop thrill ride that keeps you guessing the whole movie.  You might not have heard of this film but you should definitely check it out, as it deserves some attention.

Kaitlyn (Zea) is a nurse that while attempting to save of a young woman is accidentally electrocuted in the operating room. After those events, Kaitlyn has memories that are not hers and are those of the young woman who died. She starts to question her sanity and seeks the help of a detective (Flannery) to try and help her figure out what is real and what is not. “The Fades” is a new supernatural thriller from Jack Thorne creator of well known series “Skins”. This six-episode series is aimed for the horror genre, though its isn’t scary at all. The show started off good in the first two episodes but then it really took a dive in the middle till end. The show wants to act like a zombie show ala “The Walking Dead” but ends up playing more like an a teenage comedy/drama with some heavy religious aspects.  The show isn’t a total let down though but it definitely fizzles out quickly.

The show follows Paul Roberts (Iain De Caestecker) who is plagued with apocalyptic dreams pending the end of everything. Paul finds himself seeing strange spirits outside of his dreams called Fades. With the help of Neil Valentine (Johnny Harris), he finds out that he is one of the Angelics, a special team of people, and that he will lead them in the battle against the Fades.  When his friends and family are pulled into this mess, Paul needs to find a way to prevent this apocalypse from happening.

The video resolution on the Blu-ray is only 1080i but still looks good. The sound includes a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track but would have been better with 5.1 though. The special features include some behind the scenes footage, a few deleted scenes (nothing special) and outtakes that are spanned over two discs. There are also a few interviews with cast members Johnny Harris and Natalie Dormer. “Mac Explains” are the intros from each episode where Paul’s best friend fills us in. Overall decent but nothing special.

Written by Jack Thorne (“Skins,” “This Is England ’86,” “Shameless”), “The Fades” is a coming-of-age fantasy drama showcasing the supernatural skills of a reluctant teenager named Paul (as played by Iain De Caestecker, formerly of “Coronation Street”). His best friend, Mac (Daniel Kaluuya, “Johnny English Reborn,” “Skins”), as well as his therapist, are completely stunned by the apocalyptic dreams that he’s been having. His twin sister Anna (Lily Loveless, “Skins”) is also unsympathetic of his socially awkward behavior.

Join Robin, Miss Martian, Superboy, Aqualad and Kid Flash on their adventures to fight the bad guys. This DVD comes packed with four episodes from the first season. This release lands in the series between from episode 9 through 12.  There are 26 episodes in season one so expect at least another 4 volumes for this season. The series is really fun and exciting but these episodes have started to get a little more darker and intense. If you are a fan of shows like “Justice League” and “Teen Titans”, this is a good mix of both.

The episodes includes are “Befret”, “Targets”, “Terror”, “Home Front”. “Befret” deals with the team trying to recover their memories after their mission in Bialya. In “Targets” puts the team in between an assassinate plot against Lex Luthor. “Terror” focuses on Superboy and Miss Martian planning to infiltrate Belle Reve. Lastly, “Home Front” brings forward the attack from Red Inferno and Red Torpedo on Mount Justice. Definitely some of the best episodes in the series to date.  I will look forward to see what comes next especially with the cliffhanger it leaves off on.

Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis have become YOUNG JUSTICE – The Justice League’s secret weapon against the forces of evil. The teen heroes will take on under-the-radar missions that would be impossible for the Justice League to handle covertly. Red Tornado will be their supervisor; Black Canary will be in charge of their training and Batman will hand out their assignments.
