Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King, follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker, who becomes a cop in the small town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets, which also hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her lost past.

From leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne), Haven is co-commissioned by Shaw Media in Canada and globally via Universal Networks International (UNI).

The creative team behind Haven includes executive producers John Morayniss (The Firm, Hell on Wheels) from eOne Television and David MacLeod (Legends of the Fall, The Ray Bradbury Theater) of Big Motion Pictures, who are joined by Lloyd Segan, Shawn Piller, Scott Shepherd (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone, Greek) of Piller/Segan/Shepherd and Matt McGuinness (Journeyman, Dark Blue) as well as Sam Ernst & Jim Dunn (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone), who also developed the series.

Cassie Steele talks about TV series “The L.A. Complex”

Cassie Steele plays the role of Abby Vargas in the television series “The L.A. Complex”. Media Mikes had a chance to talk with Cassie recently about the show and her upcoming music album.

Adam Lawton: What can you tell us about the show “The L.A. Complex”?
Cassie Steele: The show is about people who move down to Los Angeles to try and make it in the entertainment industry. The show follows how the characters deal with the pressures and anxieties of trying to make.

AL: Can you tell us about your role on the show?
CS: I play Abby on the show. She is a girl from Canada hoping to make it. Abby doesn’t have a lot of experience or a visa. She is struggling with how long she can stay down there and support herself without making any money. This is Abby’s first pilot season so we get to see a lot of that and the pressures pilot season can cause.

AL: Did you have any likes or dislikes about working on the series?
CS: I enjoyed meeting the new cast and crew and I loved everyone I worked with. The people at Epitome are like my family. I really learned so much and it’s been amazing to working with them. Now we get to do the second season!

AL: When does shooting for season two of the show start?
CS: I am actually in Toronto shooting as we speak. We just had a long read through of the first 7 episodes. There are some hot new characters and a lot of funny girls and boys. It was nice to meet some of the new people joining the show and, it was great to see returning cast members as well. It is very exciting.

AL: Will we see any big differences on the new season as compared to season 1?
CS: I think season 1 pushes a lot of buttons especially compared to Canadian television. Season two you will see the characters get into deeper problems. As they get move up or down the ladder you start to see what each character is capable of when they are desperate.

AL: Do you think your time on “Degrassi: The Next Generation” helped prepare you at all for your role on “The L.A. Complex”?
CS: Yeah, I guess so. I don’t think I really notice because I have done it for so long. The things other people may notice I may not. I think that it must. Everything to my knowledge went very smoothly. I think it helped me learn how to communicate with other actors. Character development is where I think it really helped me. I played the character of Manny for so long that I learned you have to play what people want to see from the character to your advantage. If you work against it things can start to work against you. I think that was a really important thing to take with me.

AL: What other projects do you have in the works?
CS: I am getting ready to release a three song teaser for my album. This release will sort of align with the CW release of my album. This is going to be a lot of fun. I am glad to have something for people to see after they watch “The L.A. Complex”. I plan to continue working on the release of my full-length album when time allows.

Marty Ingels reflects about his TV series “I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster”

Marty Ingels is known best for his role of Arch Fenster in the 1962 short-lived series “I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster”.  Thanks to Lightyear Entertainment, the series has been revived and Volume 1 containing the first 16 episode was recently released.  Read our review here.  Media Mikes had a chance to revisit the show with Marty and also talk about working with his wife, Shirley Jones and his possible upcoming one-man show.

Mike Gencarelli: Since “I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster” only lasted one season of 32 episodes, how can you reflect on its renewed interest?
Marty Ingels: It is hard to get people interested in things that happened 50 years ago. The fact that it still holds up today is impressive. The big mistake was that it was canceled in the first place.  All the rumors said that they canceled it before the ratings even came in.  When the ratings came out, we had beaten both of our competitions  “Sing-along with Mitch” and “Route 66”.  We had beaten both of them and they were giants.  If we had stayed on one more season we would have caught up and then who knows what would have happened.

MG: How was revisiting the show with the Volume 1 DVD release with new interviews and episode commentary?
MI: Good question.  I will be honest with you, I am 76 years old now and I thought this show was going to be the rocket for me. Funny story, Patrick Cassidy came to me after watching these episodes and told me “Ingles, I have to tell you when I saw you in your twenties and what a natural comic with such great timing you were…you must have done something monumental to fuck up your career.” [laughs]. So, there was a lot of feelings of nostalgia though and looking back over my life, but I am glad the show is getting the attention it deserves.

MG: Did you how any room to improv at all during the production?
MI: You know something, I leaned very much on the material.  All of the writers were great. Lenny Stern came from “The Honeymooners”, amongst many others.  I was up to my ass in creative people, who knew what to do with Marty Ingels.  It was just great.  At that time, improv wasn’t that big either.  Nobody really said “Hey guys, we want you to run with this here”.  There was so much precise physical stuff.  I got a fan letter from Stan Laurel and complimented me on my physical comedy, so that was amazing.  But when you do physical comedy, you can’t improvise as much.

MG: Looking back you have done over 100 TV and film appearances, which are some of the best ones which were some of the worst ones?
MI: All my TV and movie “guest shots” were good…small but good. I only wish they’d have been “bigger”.

MG: How has The TV sitcom changed over the years, good or bad?
MI: It’s easier to get a laugh with blue stuff. The guys who work clean are the REAL comedy masters, period.

MG: You got a couple of films coming up co-starring with your wife Shirley Jones, tell us about that experience?
MI: Those came about when Shirley got the job and they asked “Doesn’t she have an old Jewish husband that they keep upstairs in the Anne Frank room?” [laughs].  We just did a film in Cincinnati and we’ve been doing a lot of independent films naturally.  Shirley had some scenes with me and what’s funny is that we have never worked together before. She works in a different way that I do and goes very strictly by the word of the script.  The director said when we were done with a scene if we could do it again and try improving it and just letting it flow.  So it was fascinating, I did my comic thing and I didn’t hold back at all and Shirley wasn’t afraid to bring it either. So I have been enjoying it quite a bit.

MG: Have you ever considered to do a one-man show?
MI: I have been told that I should do a one-man show many times now.  Nobody gets a regeneration at 75 as a comic.  I actually never did stand-up either, I went straight to Hollywood.  Everyone has been telling me to do it, so I have going back and forth figuring out if I have enough material.  Since comedy now is all about stories, I have quite a few of those.  So I have been circling around that.  I already have my opening line written.  I would point to the lady in the first row and ask “How long did it you to get here?” and she would say “Oh I took the freeway, so about a half hour”.  Ask the person next to her and they would say “I came from Pasadena, so it took an hour and half.  Then I would say to the audience “It took me 47 years to get here”.  Life is interesting and it has a lot of twists and turns.

Running Time: 287 minutes

Series: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I grew up reading the comics for Marvel’s X-Men and I have always been a fan.  I though have never really enjoyed the live-action “X-Men” films especially the “Origins” series.  This Japanese anime series definitely redeems the “X-Men” brand and kicks some major ass.  It is non-stop action and really intense.  I also very recommend watching with the intended Japanese audio track.  I feel it adds a lot to the anime feel of the series.  Fans of X-Men are going to want to jump at the chance to see this series.  I only wish this series was longer than twelve episodes but luckily there is also a stand-alone “Marvel Anime: Wolverine” series as well.  You here that Sony, please release that one as well!

The series follows the reuniting of The X-Men the death of Jean Grey in order to track down Hisako Ichiki (Armor), a missing teenage girl in Northern Japan. The X-Men need to also go up against fanatical anti-mutant group, the U-Men.  They find out that Professor Xavier reason for bring them back together is bigger than they think. The result could either bridge the gap between mutants and humans, or tear the two species apart forever.

The special features on this DVD are worth checking out though . “Re-Examining The X-Men” is a behind-the-scenes looks into the creating these episodes. “X-Men: A Team of Outsiders” in an in-depth look at Marvel’s famous mutants. “Special Talk Session” is a roundtable discussion with the series creator. though not as cool as this series, check out our review of “Marvel Anime: Iron Man”.

DVD Review “Marvel Anime: Iron Man – Complete Series”

Directed by: Yuzo Sato
English Cast: Adrian Pasdar, Neil Kaplan, Milo Ventimiglia, Cindy Robinson
Japanese Cast: Keiji Fujiwara, Unshō Ishizuka, Rikiya Koyama, Hiroe Oka
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: April 24, 2012
Running Time: 287 minutes

Series: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I am a huge fan of Japanese anime. Combine that with the amazing work of Marvel superheros and you should have match made in heaven. Although besides the fact that this series looks really cool as an anime, it just doesn’t entertain as much as I thought it would. The series is rather slow and doesn’t get really start until it is almost over. Overall, this series had some good parts and I would recommend to Iron Man fans. I enjoyed the fact it was produced and default to Japanese audio with subtitles, I think that really adds a lot to the feel of the show. If you are looking for some kick-ass Marvel Anime, I would also highly recommend the X-Men series.

The show follows Tony Stark as his arrives in Japan to build a new arc reactor that will deliver unlimited free energy to the Japanese people. He also plans to retire from suiting Iron Man and focus on plans to mass-produce armor known as “Iron Man Dio”. Stark faces not only challenges from the Japanese government and a mysterious organization Zodiac funded by terrorists. Stark needs to battle of them in order to save the day. Keep an eye out for crossover from Marvel including X-Men’s Wolverine.

The special features on the DVD are impressive and included some decent extras. The first feature called “Re-Imagining Iron Man” focuses on converting the show to anime. “21st Century Hero: The Technology of Iron Man” focuses on Tony Stark’s goodies and gadgets. “Special Cross Talk” is a roundtable discussion with the shows creators. “Voicing Tony Stark” is an interview with Japanese voice of Tony Stark, Keiji Fujiwara. I hope Sony is planning on releasing the rest of the Marvel Anime series for “Blade” and “Wolverine” as well. Fingers crossed.

Adult Swim’s “Eagleheart” Interview Series

“Eagleheart” follows US Marshall Chris Monsanto (Chris Elliott) as he fights crime with his two partners: the slow-witted Brett (Brett Gelman) and by-the-book Susie (Maria Thayer) They take on drug smugglers, art thieves, kidnappers, and con artists with bloody violence and gruesome deaths ensuing.

“Eagleheart” begins its second season on April 12, 2012 and will consist of 12 episodes. The first season of “Eagleheart” was also released on DVD on April 3, 2012. From the episodes, I have have seen in season two it is much more over-the-top and funnier than the first season.

DVD Review “Shazzan: The Complete Series”

Created by: Alex Toth
Voices of: Jerry Dexter, Janet Waldo, Barney Phillips, Don Messick
Distributed by: Warner Archive
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Episodes: 36
Running Time: 389 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Warner Archive does it again! They have revived another great Hannah-Barbara series called “Shazzan”.   “Shazzan” is not to be confused with “Shazam!”, the 1970’s super hero Captain Marvel TV series. This release contains the complete series of this fun show.  All 36 episodes are included in this set.  I really enjoyed this show and the episodes look great and especially for a show that premiered in 1967.  Either way, fans of Hanna-Barbara and animation alike will want to pick up this fantastic set immediately.

The series follows the adventures of brother and sister team, Chuck and Nancy, who travel around a mystical Arabian world on a flying camel, named Kaboobie. The couple also seem to find themselves in some sort of  dangers.  In the time of need, they put together their magic rings and summon a magic genie, Shazzan.  With the help of Shazzan, the twins seeks the wizard who lives “behind the beyond” in order to return them home.

“Shazzan” has even popped up in one of my favorite shows “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law”, in the episode “Mufti Trouble”.  The episodes are presented in 4 X 3 Full-Screen and also in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1.  The audio includes a Dolby Digital Mono track. Besides the 36 episodes, there is also a special feature included called  Saturday Morning Collection “The Power of Shazzan”.

Shazzan: The Complete Series is now available from Warner Archive at http://bit.ly/Hf1V8b

Synopsis: When two adventurous, twin teenagers, Chuck and Nancy, recombine the halves of a mysterious ring, they are instantly transported to ancient Egypt…as masters of an all-powerful genie named Shazzan. Now, with the help of the mighty Shazzan, the twins seek the wizard who lives “behind the beyond,” the only person able to help them return home. But even as the teenagers pursue their quest, every evil sorcerer in the desert kingdom desires the twins’ magic ring and will stop at nothing to gain the power it grants over Shazzan.

The series revolves around a crew of kid pirates – leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby – and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Mister Smee, from Disney’s classic “Peter Pan.” The stories emphasize teamwork and features original pirate rock music performed by Sharky and Bones of The Never Land Pirate Band.

The memorable Disney stories and characters, both classic and contemporary, have connected strongly with kids age 2-7 and their parents, and that connection has also led to the creation of brand extensions in other Disney businesses. “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” is a prominent part of the popular Disney Junior Live on Stage! attraction at Disney Parks & Resorts, and is featured in a Disney Junior magazine from Disney Publishing, in a soundtrack and DVD from Disney Studios and a Disney Consumer Products line set to debut in stores nationwide in spring 2012. Disney Junior reflects the emotional connection generations of consumers have to Disney storytelling and Disney characters, both classic and contemporary. It invites mom and dad to join their child in the Disney experience of magical, musical and heartfelt stories and characters, while incorporating specific learning and development themes designed for kids age 2-7. Disney Junior’s animated and live action series blend Disney’s unparalleled storytelling and characters kids love deeply with learning, including early math, language skills, healthy eating and lifestyles, and social skills. Disney Junior launched in February 2011 with a daily programming block on Disney Channel. In its first year, Disney Junior posted the network’s biggest yearly audience in the daypart in Total Viewers, Kids 2-5, Boys 2-5 and Women 18-49 and increased by double-digit margins among preschooler demographics over year-ago levels. Chronicling the lives of LAPD officers and detectives like no other series on television, this powerful, intensely emotional drama stars Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie, along with special guest star Lucy Liu.

Since premiering in 2009, Southland has redefined the police drama with its raw, authentic look at the lives and work of Los Angeles detectives and beat cops. The show centers on four main characters: Officer John Cooper (Cudlitz), a seasoned cop who will have to prove himself again after recovering from surgery; Officer Ben Sherman (McKenzie), who still has much to learn after recently completing his training rotation; Detective Lydia Adams (King), whose unending caseload hits closer to home; and Sammy Bryant (Hatosy), a former detective who decided to go back to being a uniform cop after the traumatic death of his partner.

Media Mikes has had a chance to chat with various members of this great show including Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie, Dorian Missick and Lucy Liu.  Feel free to leave comments below and make sure to check out season 4 of “Southland” on January 17th.

Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington are just such a great team. They could sit in a white room and they could make it funny. In this series, they decide to send Karl Pilkington all over the world and have him experience different cultures. Karl Pilkington is just so clueless and over the top funny. Whether or not he is joking is meaningless since almost every word out of his mouth is magic. Ricky Gervais’ laugh is also infectious. He just cracks you up every time if you don’t find it funny. A friend of mine suggested that his laugh should be a ringtone and I couldn’t agree more.

In this first series of 8 episodes called: “The Seven Wonders”, Karl gets sent to the following places: China, India, Israel, Jordan, Mexico, Egypt, Brazil and Peru. In China, he visit the Great Wall of China. In India, he visits the Taj Mahal. Episode 3, while in Israel we see Karl visit a few places like East Jerusalem for the Western Wall, the Palestinian territories Bethlehem, The Dead Sea and Petra in Jordan. In Mexico he explores Chichen Itza, the city built by the Maya civilization. In Egypt he visits the Great Pyramid of Giza. In Brazil he meets the statue of Christ the Redeemer. Lastly in Peru, he visits the 15th-century Inca site, Machu Picchu.

I think the special features are a little lacking but overall still decent if you are a fan of the trio. “The Preview Show” has a sit down with the group and it definitely get a few laughs. There are about 8 deleted scenes totaling about 15 minutes, which are great. Then the only extra left is a 3 minute slideshow of stills. I would have loved to have more hands on features from Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington and perhaps some commentaries or featurettes. I wish this was also released on Blu-ray in the States.  I know for sure that I am really looking forward to season two.
