Media Mikes’ Holiday Movie Preview

Once again it’s time to put the turkey in the oven, loosen our belts and plan our weekly trips to the multiplex. Its holiday time and the studios are pulling out some of the big guns to keep you entertained. Once again, MediaMikes is pleased to preview some of the films you can look forward to seeing in the next two months. As always, opening dates are subject to change at the studio’s whim.

THIS WEEK

A DANGEROUS METHOD
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley.
Directed by: David Cronenberg

It’s a battle of great minds when Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Fassbender) duel over a disturbed patient (Knightley). Cronenberg and Mortensen have teamed up twice and produced some great films (“A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises”). I’m expecting a hat trick here.
OSCAR CHANCES: Mortensen earned a Best Actor nod for “Eastern Promises” and Fassbender is coming off a career making performance in “X-men: First Class.”

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS

Starring the voices of: James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent and Bill Nighy
Directed by: Sarah Smith

When Santa Claus accidentally misses one child on his rounds his youngest son, Arthur, attempts to correct the problem.
OSCAR CHANCES: Don’t see it on the short list for Best Animated Feature.

THE ARTIST
Starring: Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo and John Goodman
Directed by: Michel Hazanavicius

In the 1920s an actor (Dujardin) falls for an upcoming actress (Bejo). This film is silent and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Dujardin was named Best Actor.

OSCAR CHANCES: The last silent film to win an Oscar was the first, “Wings.” Look for that to change soon.

HUGO

Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Mortez and Christopher Lee
Directed by: Martin Scorsese

In 1930’s Paris, a young boy who lives in the train station hopes to unravel a secret involving his late father and an automatron. Scorsese plus 3D? Can’t wait.

OSCAR CHANCES: With a director like Scorsese you can’t count this film out.

THE MUPPETS
Starring: Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Chris Cooper
Directed by: James Bobin

A fan of the felt covered group (Segel, who also wrote the screenplay) tries to reunite the Muppets in an attempt to stop a greedy oil tycoon (Cooper) from buying and demolishing their old theatre. Some of the original Muppet performers, including Frank Oz, declined to work on this film. But Segel has been a lifelong fan and I don’t think he’d do anything to harm the franchise. Director Tobin is making his feature film debut after having helmed many episodes of “Da Ali G Show” and “Flight of the Conchords.”

OSCAR CHANCES: To quote Johnny Carson while addressing Miss Piggy, the only Oscar award she’d ever win would be from Oscar Meyer.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN
Starring: Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh and Eddie Redmayne
Directed by: Simon Curtis

A young man working on his first film is assigned to look after Marilyn Monroe.
Williams totally immerses herself in the role as does Branagh, who co-stars as Laurence Olivier.

OSCAR CHANCES: A possible nod to Williams for Best Actress.

DECEMBER 2

CORIOLANUS
Starring: Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler
Directed by: Ralph Fiennes

Fiennes makes his directorial debut with a modern-day retelling of the Shakespearean story of a Roman war hero who loses his power and must eam up with his enemy to lead an attack on those who betrayed him.

OSCAR CHANCES: Fiennes could be a double threat.

SHAME
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan and James Badge Dale
Directed by: Steve McQueen

A sex addicted man (Fassbender) has to come to terms with who he is when his younger sister comes for a visit. The film has been rated NC-17 so you may be hard pressed finding it. Director McQueen is English and no relation to the late actor.

OSCAR CHANCES: NC-17 means not a lot of theatres will be playing it so unless everyone in Hollywood gets a screener it doesn’t appear likely.

DECEMBER 9

I MELT WITH YOU

Starring: Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe and Jeremy Piven
Directed by: Mark Pellington

When four friends from college have a reunion they are reminded of an old pact they once made with each other.

OSCAR CHANCES: Mmmmmmmmmm NO.

NEW YEAR’S EVE
Starring: Lea Michelle, Jon Bon Jovi and Halle Berry
Directed by: Garry Marshall

From the people that brought you “Valentine’s Day” comes another celebration day. Can “Cinco de Mayo: The Movie” be far behind?

OSCAR CHANCES: Nada.

THE SITTER
Starring: Jonah Hill, Ari Graynor and Sam Rockwell
Directed by: David Gordon Green

Hill stars as a college student on suspension who is coaxed into babysitting the kids next door. Foolishly, he takes the kiddies with him to New York City. For fans of Hill, this is the last “chubby” film you’ll be seeing him in. If you’ve seen his video game commercial or the trailer for “21 Jump Street” you’ll notice he’s dropped some serious poundage.

OSCAR CHANCES: Unless they give them for weight loss, no.

TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY
Starring: Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Colin Firth
Directed by: Tomas Alfredson

Retired from Britain’s MI6, George Smiley (Oldman) embarks on a mission to expose a mole in the organization. Oldman takes over the role played by Sir Alec Guinness in the 1979 film.

OSCAR CHANCES: Oldman is always worth watching.

W.E.
Starring: James D’Arcy and Abbie Cornish
Directed by: Madonna

Madonna directs this romantic drama focusing on the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson as well as a contemporary romance between a married woman and a Russian security guard. Madge also wrote the screenplay with her “Truth or Dare” collaborator Alex Keshishian.

OSCAR CHANCES: Judging from the early reviews I’d have to say no. However, there’s always the Golden Raspberry awards.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller
Directed by: Lynne Ramsay

When her teenage son (Miller) goes on a killing spree at school, his mother (Swinton) must deal with her grief and her feelings of responsibility.

OSCAR CHANCES: Strong subject matter, which the Academy likes.

DECEMBER 14

LOOSIES
Starring: Peter Facinelli, Jaimie Alexander and Michael Madsen
Directed by: Michael Corrente

A New York City pickpocket learns he has a child from a long ago romance. Star Facinelli also wrote the screenplay.

OSCAR CHANCES: None

DECEMBER 16

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED

Starring: Alvin, Simon, Theodore
Directed by: Mike Mitchell

On a luxury cruise the boys and their Chipettes find themselves marooned on a not-so deserted island. Director Mitchell helmed the last “Shrek” film.

OSCAR CHANCES: Director Mitchell also helmed “Duece Bigalow: Male Gigolo.”

CARNAGE
Starring: Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly
Directed by: Roman Polanski

The parents of two school boys, one family upscale the other middle class, meet to discuss their son’s schoolyard fights.

OSCAR CHANCES: Hell Yes! With the exception of Reilly, who was nominated for “Chicago,” everyone I’ve mentioned above has at least one Oscar on their mantle.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton
Directed by: Brad Bird

After the IMF has been disavowed by the government, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) leads a new group of agents to investigate a bombing of the Kremlin. Director Bird tries his hand with live action after having directed the animated masterpieces “The Iron Giant” and “The Incredibles.”

OSCAR CHANCES: Possibly in the technical areas.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS
Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law and Jared Harris
Directed by: Guy Ritchie

Holmes does battle against his greatest nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Also stars the original “Girl in the Dragon Tattoo,” Noomi Rapace.

OSCAR CHANCES: Visual effects.

DECEMBER 21

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN

Starring the voices of: Jamie Bell and Daniel Craig.
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Master Spielberg tries his hand at motion-capture animation, throwing in a little 3D for good measure. There are over 20 “TinTin” classic comics so if this is a hit I’d expect more.

OSCAR CHANCES: Since the Academy ruled recently that motion capture films don’t qualify for the Animated award, unless John Williams’ score gets a nod I’d say no.

ALBERT NOBBS
Starring: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson
Directed by: Rodrigo Garcia

In order to make a living in 19th century Ireland, a woman disguises herself as a man. Thirty years later she is still living a lie.

OSCAR CHANCES: Critics who have seen this film call it Close’s greatest performance.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Starring: Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig and Stellan Skarsgard
Directed by: David Fincher

The director of “The Social Network” and “Fight Club” takes on one of the most popular novel series in history. He’s also taking on the audiences pre-conceived ideas as to how the story will unfold.

OSCAR CHANCES: I haven’t read the books or seen the previous films. The trailer has had me excited for quite awhile. I’m saying at least two nominations. Do I hear three?

DECEMBER 23

IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY

Starring: Zana Marjanovic and Goran Kostic
Directed by: Angelina Jolie

Two people fall in love during the 1990s civil war in Bosnia. Not only is Jolie making her directorial debut she also wrote the script.

OSCAR CHANCES: None to speak of.

WE BOUGHT A ZOO
Starring: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johannson and Thomas Haden Church
Directed by: Cameron Crowe

A widower decides to purchase a run-down zoo and move his family to run it. Good news: from the director of “Jerry Maguire” and “Almost Famous.” Bad news: from the director of “Elizabethtown.”

OSCAR CHANCES: Good pedigree but unusual subject.

DECEMBER 25

EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE
Starring: Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn
Directed by: Stephen Daldry

After his father is killed on 9/11 a young boy finds a mysterious key and must find out where it goes.

OSCAR CHANCES: NEVER bet against Tom Hanks or Stephen Daldry.

WAR HORSE
Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson and David Thewlis
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

An adaptation of the children’s novel and the currently running Broadway show, the story revolves around a farm horse sent into battle during World War I and the young boy who tries to get him back.

OSCAR CHANCES: Across the board.

DECEMBER 28

PARIAH
Starring: Adepero Oduye and Kim Wayans
Directed by: Dee Rees

A Brooklyn teenager must deal with disappointing friends and family when she attempts to embrace her lesbian identity.

OSCAR CHANCES: This film has been raved about since it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. It could be this year’s “Precious.”

DECEMBER 30

ANGELS CREST
Starring: Thomas Dekker, Mira Sorvino and Lynn Collins
Directed by: Gaby Dellal

A small town father tries to care for his young son and alcoholic wife. Tragedy strikes when the young boy disappears in a snow storm.

OSCAR CHANCES: Maybe

THE IRON LADY
Starring: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent and Richard E. Grant
Directed by: Phyllida Lloyd

A look at Margaret Thatcher, the former English prime minister.

OSCAR CHANCES: Streep holds the record with 16 previous acting nominations (two Oscars). Can number 17 be far behind?

Behind The Screen: Everyone’s a Critic!

This past week brought a little notoriety both to MediaMikes and to me personally. With a click of the mouse I entered a favorable review of the new Adam Sandler film “Jack and Jill” and apparently, when I did this, I caused the end of the movie going world.

I’ve been writing film reviews since high school. And I’m sure since then people have disagreed with my opinions. But I was unprepared for the backlash I took from “Jack and Jill.” And it wasn’t the people that actually took the time to see the film and then comment. It was the people that not only HADN’T seen the film but had no intention of seeing it. The first three comments left for me on RottenTomatoes were simply, “F*** You!” In fact, out of the 169 comments left, the majority of them were critical. A lot of “How much money did Adam Sandler pay you” comments. Not a dime. We also received over 40 comments on MediaMikes. Thankfully only one dropped the “F” bomb. I made an attempt to explain myself but later on started getting as snarky as those commenting. For that I apologize. Mike G. and I appreciate the fact that you took the time to visit the site, even if it was for a couple of minutes. By far the nastiest comment I received was emailed to me. The entire comment consisted of: “YOU ARE A WORTHLESS F**!!!! WORSE THEN A N***ER. At first I thought to myself, “wow, Mel Gibson read my review.” But then I saw the return email address identified the writer as “tallmaninla.” Since Mel and I are the same height I wouldn’t consider him tall.

I won’t say I’m sorry that my review brought some attention to MediaMikes. That certainly wasn’t my intention, but we were featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, HLN television, MovieFone, The Huffington Post and I even had someone write an article trying to dissect my movie preferences. I would also like to point out that two other critics eventually liked “Jack and Jill.” And that out of almost 11,000 reviews from moviegoers who had seen the film, the average rating was 3 out of 5. My rating: 3 out of 5. Thank you average movie fan. I don’t write reviews for attention. I write them because I enjoy sharing my opinion of them. I’ve been a self-proclaimed movie nerd since 1975 (thank you Steven Spielberg) and will hopefully continue to be one until the day I die. If I ever lose my passion for everything cinema I’ll unplug my keyboard and go away.

I want to say a few things about what we do here at MediaMikes. First and foremost, we are two guys who like movies. That’s the job requirement. Same for our staff. We did not go to college to become writers nor do we think we’re writing the cure for cancer. OUR reviews are just that. We try to write for others who like movies. A lot of the negative comments I received also blasted me for not liking the film “Drive.” You know who also didn’t like “Drive?” The film critics for the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Leonard Maltin. And while I would NEVER presume to put my writing on the same level as theirs, I don’t think they received any comments telling them they had no business watching movies. One of my fellow critics here in Kansas City gushed all over “Drive” after the screening, comparing the director to Stanley Kubrick. He actually used the term “Kubrickian.” Really? After eight movies the guy’s Stanley Kubrick??? Kubrick’s eighth film was “2001: A Space Odyssey.” He’d already made “Lolita,” “Spartacus,” “Dr. Strangelove” and “Path’s of Glory.” And he still had “A Clockwork Orange,” “Barry Lyndon,” “The Shining” and “Full Metal Jacket” ahead of him. He WAS Stanley Kubrick.

I write reviews for people like me. People that want to be entertained for two hours. And if I’m blown away afterwards then that’s a bonus. I do have a pretty good knowledge of film history. If I were reviewing films in 1987 and had screened “The Untouchables” I could have told you that the scenes on the stairs of the train station were a homage to the Odessa Steps sequence in Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film “Battleship Potemkin.” But would that make you want to see the film more? Besides, Brian DePalma is so often accused of ripping of Alfred Hitchcock that I wouldn’t want him to be known for stealing from a dead Russian as well. Kevin Smith included a scene in “Chasing Amy” that had his stars comparing body scars against a nautical backdrop. Do I mention that he’s “Spielbergian” in his work or do I just know that Kevin Smith loves the film “Jaws?” I’ve made a total of three films in my life. Even won a couple of awards. But I don’t portend to know everything about movies. I know what I like. And what I don’t. And so does anyone that goes to the movies. Believe me when I say it: EVERYONE’S a critic.

“Harry Potter” Press Event Coverage at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Island Of Adventure
Universal Orlando Resort
1000 Universal Studios Plaza
Orlando, FL 32819

To celebrate the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2”, there was a special celebration and some magic throughout the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Island Of Adventure park in Orlando FL.  This special event hosted by Warner Bros. celebrated not only the home entertainment release but also a decade of movie history by allowing fans to share their love for the Harry Potter films. During the day on Friday and Saturday, we were given VIP press park tours of Island Of Adventure and Universal Orlando parks.  Friday night was packed with excellent press conferences with the following talent and filmmakers: David Barron (Producer of “Half-Blood Prince” and “Deathly Hallow, Part 1 & 2) , David Yates (Director of Order of the Phoenix, “Half-Blood Prince” and “Deathly Hallow, Part 1 & 2) , Rupert Grint (Ron Wesley), Warwick Davis (Griphook/Professor Filius Flitwick), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan), Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley), David Bradley (Argus Filch), David Heyman (Series Producer), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), James Phelps (Fred Weasley), Oliver Phelps (George Weasley), George Harris (Kingsley Shacklebolt), Nick Moran (Scabior) and Stanislav Ianevski (Viktor Krum).

After a great day of touring the parks, Saturday night featured a red carpet media event at Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  The energy was very high during the red carpet event which ran from the middle of Island Of Adventure leading into Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  During the red carpet, the talent was on hand for interviews as they walked down the red carpet.  Even with all the red carpet action, the coolest event of the weekend had to be Warwick Davis conducting the Frog Choir.  This event was also held at the opening of Wizarding World of Harry Potter last year, but overall it was a very fun and amazing event.

The guests also had a chance to celebrate this event where they had the chance where they can celebrate their love of “Harry Potter” with the filmmakers, cast members and other fans.  The guests were able to attend an exclusive evening gala, autograph signings and Q&A sessions with stars from the “Harry Potter” films,  and lastly there were screenings of all eight Harry Potter films – including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” – at the AMC Universal Cineplex 20 in Universal CityWalk. Fans of the series were having “Harry Potter” overload. It was an event that could not have been missed.  If you were not able to attend this event, you still need to take a trip down to Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Island Of Adventure and check out this amazing attraction.

Interview with Danny Glover

Danny Glover is diverse well known actor who has ranged from work like “Lethal Weapon” series to “Saw”. Last year he took the hilarious role “Death at a Funeral”.  Danny is co-starring in the new film “Infected” along with a great cast Vinnie Jones and Beverly Mitchell. Media Mikes had a chance to briefly ask Danny a few questions about that film and his other films.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us a little bit about “Infected” and your role in the film?
Danny Glover: I play the character Locke. He is a sort of mad scientist who will do anything to advance his own experiments and at the same time profit off his diabolical conspiracy.

MG: What did you enjoy most about working on the film?
DG: This was a different type of role which involved a lot of action and I enjoyed playing the villain.

MG: Tell us what do you look for in a character when you approach a project?
DG: I like to see if the role challenging, does it give light to a person in the world or a character that is unexplored and unique.

MG: From having done horror like “Saw” to comedy/action like “Lethal Weapon”, do you have a genre that you enjoy to work in most?
DG: No, i don’t have one specific genre that i like better than another. What is most important is that I feel I can portray the character.

Maya Entertainment Acquires Domestic Rights to “La Hora Cero”

MAYA ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES DOMESTIC RIGHTS TO “LA HORA CERO” (Aka THE ZERO HOUR) FROM HSI FILMS

VOD and Home Video Release Slated for 2012

“La Hora Cero” Set Box Office Record As Highest Grossing Film In Venezuelan Film History

LOS ANGELES, CA – Maya Entertainment has acquired from Los Angeles based HSI Films the domestic rights to “La Hora Cero”, a non-stop action/thriller shot entirely on location in the streets of Venezuela.   The deal for domestic rights includes plans for a 2012 VOD on Maya’s Comcast and Time Warner branded folders, Blu-Ray/DVD, and iTunes and other digital platforms.

Quickly becoming the highest grossing local film in Venezuelan history, “La Hora Cero” (aka The Zero Hour) is a gritty, fast-paced heist film.  Set in Caracas during the 24 hours of a controversial medical strike, it follows Parca, a tattooed hit man as he takes a private hospital hostage in order to save his girlfriend.  What seemed like a perfect plan will end in a frenetic outcome, as Parca is forced to come to terms with his past, and as he discovers that his worst enemies are much closer than he ever imagined.  A love story told in the midst of chaos, “La Hora Cero” is a timely and universal story about the mythic rise to power and the inevitable fall from grace.

“Maya Entertainment is extremely proud to have acquired the in-your-face action picture “La Hora Cero”, and even more thrilled to be working with the talented writer/director Diego Velasco and writer/producer Carolina Paiz,” said David Rand, EVP of Home Entertainment for Maya Entertainment.

Hollywood Studios International (parent company to HSI Films) Chairman and CEO Steven Saxton said, “We’re extremely pleased to have found the perfect partner in Maya Entertainment for the US release of one of the most exciting and influential films to come out of Latin America this past year.”

“La Hora Cero” was produced by Open Studios and Factor +RH in association with Anonimo Studio and Centro Nacional Autonomo de Cinematografia (CNAC). The deal was negotiated by Tonantzin Esparza, Director of Acquisitions on behalf of Maya and Eric Christenson of HSI Films on behalf of Executive Producer Sergio Aguero and producers, Diego Velasco and Carolina Paiz.

Short Film Review “Sailcloth”

Directed by: Elfar Adalsteins
Starring: John Hurt
Disturbed by: Berserk Films
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 17 minutes

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

This a beautiful wordless short film with wonderful acting. John Hurt is such an amazing actor, which he has proved over his career. He further proves this by starring in this amazing short and without speaking a single word. That is something that very few people can do well. He simply nails it. The film is lead by an amazing score, which takes us on this beautiful visual journey.

The story follows an elderly man (John Hurt) who sneaks out of an assisted living home to head to the sea. He sets out on a sailboat with his self-made sail and sets out on a mission. Once he gets on board, he reveals a picture of a woman (probably his past on wife or lover) and there is a dance scene with the two, which is so well depicted behind this sailcloth. He then begins to set the boat on fire and send himself overboard attached to an anchor bringing down himself and the boat. It is the story of a man has lead a good life and is lost without his love. It is very touching and well done.

It is very smartly written and directed by Elfar Adalsteins. He tells this amazing story so well in such a short period of time. It has some really beautiful cinematography courtesy of Karl Oskarsson. I have to say though since this film is wordless besides the acting, the credit needs to be go Richard Cottle for creating the original music that drives this short. Overall such a beautiful and touching film. Must see! John Hurt better win many awards for this film.

Short Film Review “The Sea Is All I Know”

Director: Jordan Bayne
Starring: Melissa Leo, Peter Gerety and Kelly Hutchinson
Blue Eyed Cherokee Films
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 30 minutes

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Right off the bat, I had to watch this film twice back-to-back since it was so intense and emotional to absorb in just one viewing. Even though the film is short doesn’t mean it is not mega packed with features some deep issues. Melissa Leo is fantastic, as usual, she delivers a fantastic performance and shines. I am not a big watcher of short films and I think that this film will open many doors for me as a critic. It is amazing so you are able to tell such a meaningful and intense story is such a short period of time. This film is wound so tight and so powerful that the you find that you were holding your breath throughout.

The story is amazing a girl (Kelly Hutchinson) who is terminally sick at home with her mother (Melissa Leo). She is suffering very much and asks for her family to assist in her death to relieve the pain. Her fisherman deadbeat father comes into picture and comforts both her and her mother. They deal with the issue at hand and have to make a very hard and moral pressing decision.

All is all great performances by all. The short is very smartly and sharply directed by Jordan Bayne. I am looking forwarding to see further work of hers. If you have a chance to catch this make sure you do it pass it up since it is surely not to be missed. I wish it a feature because I couldn’t help but want more but for what it was great.
