Interview with The Great Commission’s Justin Singh

Justin Singh is the lead vocalist for The Great Commission a faith based metal-core band hailing from Redlands, California. The band released its second album in July of this year titled “Heavy Worship”. The album was produced by Andrew P. Glover and is being released via Century Media/ANGR Records. Media Mikes had a chance to talk with Justin prior to the bands performance in Syracuse, NY about the new album and the bands upcoming plans.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about the band’s latest release “Heavy Worship”?
Justin Singh:  “Heavy Worship” was released in July on Century Media/ANGR records. It took us 2 years to write this album. We had received a lot of labels offers after our contract had run out with Strike First/ Face Down records but, we were really waiting on god to pick the right label for us. During that time we were just writing music and lyrics that we felt would represent the band. We took time and sat down with every song to figure out what it was saying. We wanted to make sure that the music on the album was just as heavy as the message. That’s the reason we titled it “Heavy Worship”

AL: How do you think this album compares to the bands previous release?
JS: I feel like this album is more of us. The first album was written with the idea of what would we want to mosh to in heaven. It was of just a fun album that had lyrics that glorified god and was just heavy. With “Worship Music” we took the same concept as with the first album but we upped everything. The lyrics on this album are not just lyrics. We wanted the album to be catchy but we also wanted the songs to have meaning and to show that we live the lyrics that we are writing.

AL: What led you guys to sample lines from “The Boondock Saints” and “Dawn of the Dead”?
JS: It will probably sound weird but I feel god speaks to me through movies no matter what the films beliefs. I get so into movies that I start to put myself into the situations. I loved the line in “The Boondock Saints” where Norman Reedus’s character explains why they do what they do. Instead of taking it in the literal sense I took it as there are a lot of evils in our life that need to be killed in order to better ourselves. The other clip was from George Romero’s film “Dawn of the Dead” and I feel that sometimes as people we become dead inside. The first line of that song is “wake up” and it’s about waking up this generation from its mundane life. It’s almost like going from being dead to alive.

AL: Do you have a favorite track off the album?
JS: That’s a hard one. It’s a tossup between “Don’t Go To Church, Be The Church” and “Draw The Line”. Both of those songs mean a lot to me for different reasons. “Don’t Go To Church, Be The Church” is awesome because I feel like from a Christian point of view in this culture were involved in it’s easy to say “We are waiting for revival”. We as people are revivals so the song is about breaking down the walls and the mentality that a church is a building. We can have church really anywhere from a venue parking lot to riding in a car. We can really talk about things anywhere. We don’t have to go to a particular building or place. “Draw The Line” is awesome because even if you are not a Christian you can still relate to the songs message. We all have our own person struggles and sometimes we have to realize that we are the cause of our own problems. Unless we change ourselves our current status isn’t going to change. It could be anything from addiction to being in a bad relationship. It’s on us to bring the better out.

AL: This band has a unique stand on Christianity as compared to other bands in the genre. Can you tell us about that?
JS: I personally only speak from experience. As we have started to branch out and not only do Christian tours but secular tours fans have come up to me and telling me about how they have been told they are going to hell for having tattoos and piercings or listening to heavy music. I was drawn to this music because of its aggressiveness. Growing up I was just captivated by the music. I always wondered why we couldn’t do this for god? When we partnered the two together we saw what happened. There are a lot of people out there especially in the south and across the states that say if you have or do any of these things you are going to hell. It’s not true! Even though we love Jesus we are a very anti-religion band.

AL: Can you tell the fans one thing they might not know about The Great Commission?
JS: (Laughs) I am going to go through them one by one. Angela is the biggest “Star Wars” nerd! She and her brother actually go to “Star Wars” conventions. Victor is a huge Nickelback fan as well as Backstreet Boys and Nsync. Me personally I am the biggest comic book geek. I am really into Marvel comics. Our drummer Alonzo is from Costa Rica and he is really into samba music. He incorporates a lot of that stuff into our albums. Solomon our bass player isn’t touring with us right now because he is at home preparing to get married. As soon as we get back from this tour a few of us are going to be in his wedding.

AL: What are the bands plans for the rest of 2011 and into 2012?
JS: We have been on the road so much lately that our friends back home in California have been kind of neglected. We are going to take December off from touring but we will be doing a few festivals in California and possibly Arizona. In January we are going start pre-production of the new album and start recording in February. From there we will hopefully be back out touring.

Film Review “Like Crazy”

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence
Directed by: Drake Doremus
Rated: PG 13
Running time: 1 hour 30 mins
Paramount Vantage

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

There have been countless movies about young love. From “Romeo and Juliet” (the one from 1968) to “The Notebook,” the notion of two people at the beginning of what they hope will last forever has been a popular topic. Built on two very strong performances, “Like Crazy” joins the list.

Jacob (Yelchin) and Anna (Jones) are Los Angeles based students that share a college class. Jacob, who is hoping to be a furniture designer, has exchanged glances with aspiring writer Anna, but hasn’t been able to work up the courage to ask her out. One day after class he finds a note from Anna on his windshield. “PS,” she adds, “I’m not a nutcase.” After an evening out where they discover a taste for whiskey and a love for Paul Simon, the two become inseparable. Their romance has one drawback. Anna is English and soon her student visa will run out. She promises to return in the fall on a work visa but, in a spontaneous decision (and what is young love if not spontaneous) she decides to just stay in the US. The things some will do for love.

Told in close-ups and slow fades, “Like Crazy” is a film that begins strong and kind of limps to an ending that mystified me. Like the recent “Martha Marcy May Marlene” the film moves along on the back of a strong performance (two here) then just stops dead. Which is disappointing because, when it’s on track, the film shamelessly captures and revels in the marvels of young love. Nervous laughter that turns into giggles. Casual glances and stuttering during small talk. Those are sure signs that you’re falling in love. The film takes a harsh turn when, because she overstayed her student visa, Anna is barred from returning to the United States, even as a tourist. She and Jacob pledge to be true but soon their phone calls are ending in a quick “Bye” instead of a breathless “I love you.” Both find others to spend time with but on the rare occasions they’re together (Jacob visits England) they begin to rekindle the old spark. But though absence makes the heart grow fonder sometimes it makes it forgetful.

Director Doremus, who co-wrote the film with Ben York Jones, shows a fine hand with character development. His camera lingers almost as if spying on Jacob and Anna as their relationship grows. During an early date at an outside café, rather than show them in a standard two-shot, or just cut back and forth in the same scene, he frames both of them separately. Even though you know they are sitting across the table from each other, they could be in separate rooms. Both stars give well crafted performances. Yelchin, probably more known for the recent “Star Trek” reboot and the recent “Fright Night” remake, hits the right notes as a young man whose life is turned upside down thanks to that funny thing called love. Felicity Jones is equally strong. Almost docile at first she rides an emotional rollercoaster as the relationships in her life move along. Solid supporting work is also turned in by “Winter’s Bone” star Lawrence and “Twilight” saga’s Charlie Bewley as other players in the game.

DVD Review “The Warring States”

Directed by: Chen Jin
Starring: Sun Honglei, Jing Tian, Francis Ng, Kim Hee-sun, Kiichi Nakai, Jiang Wu
Cinematography Hyung-ku Kim
Distributed by China Lion Film Distribution
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running time: 130 minutes

Overall Score: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Usually when it comes to epic historical foreign films, I am all over it but this film simply failed to entertain me at all past the first 15 minutes. I found it to be very slow moving and the story jumped all over the place. When there was action scenes, they were decent but there were no where enough of them. The locations where the films were shot were definitely beautiful. Overall I would not recommended anyone waste their time on this one. There are plenty of great period foreign films. Check out “13 Assassins” for one of the best movies of the year. Sorry a Mandarin audio track with English subtitles is not considered a bonus feature, especially when it is the only audio track.

Premise from official site (since don’t ask me to explain it): Sun Bin (Sun Hong-Lei, Mongol), purported descendant of the Art of War author Sun Tzu, is a brilliant military strategist steadily advancing in the ranks of war during China’s Warring States Period (fifth to third centuries BC). He’s believed to have the knowledge to defeat any opponent in battle. Not to be outdone, Sun’s brother, Pang Juan (Francis Ng, Exiled), secures a powerful military general position for himself and, in a jealous twist, frames Sun for treason. Sun begins a long journey to prison and back, and again up the ranks of war, finally ending as a top strategist and peer with his brother. The Warring States” follows the rivalry of these two brothers to the end, where both meet again on the battlefield, leading armies against each other in a fight to the death.

Interview with Chaske Spencer

Chaske Spencer plays wolf pack leader Sam Uley in the blockbuster “Twilight” series films. Media Mikes recently caught up with Chaske to talk about his role in the films as well as some of the other projects he is involved with.

Adam Lawton: How did your role in the “Twilight” series come about?
Chaske Spencer: I auditioned for it through Rene Haynes who had cast me a bunch of other films. Everything really happened through her. They had the audition for all of the wolf pack members and I read initially for Sam and that was the role I ended up being cast for.
AL: Were you familiar with the story line for “New Moon”?
CS: I knew a little bit but not really that much. I had seen “Twilight” advertised around New York but I didn’t know too much about it other than it was about a vampire. After auditioning and getting the part I realized how big of a deal it was.

AL: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” will be your third time playing the role of Sam. Do you feel your portrayal of the character has evolved with each film?
CS: In “Breaking Dawn” you’re going to see a lot more of Sam as he is a very pivotal character in the series and he really comes out in “Breaking Dawn”. The previous films were kind of a build up for the Sam character. My favorite book that I went to for ideas about the character was “Eclipse” as it had a lot more of the back story.

AL: Have you been allowed to make the character more your own since “New Moon”?
CS: Not really. I came in after reading the books and doing my research and I had an idea as to how I wanted to portray the character. I just went at it and waited for the director to tell me if I was doing something wrong. According to him I was doing ok because unless they tell me I’m doing it wrong then I just keep going with what I got.

AL: What has been your reaction to the fans of the film and did you think the series was going to be as big as it has become?
CS: I kind of knew it was going to be huge especially after our first experience with the paparazzi. The U.S.A. Today article where they announced who was going to be playing the wolf pack along with me researching the first film I knew it was going to be big. I was expecting the reactions of it and the fans are great as they have pretty much given us a career. If it wasn’t for the fans of the books the studios would have never made them. The fans really give us a job and it’s been a snowballing effect through each movie. “Breaking Dawn” is going to be huge and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It’s a fun wild ride but I am ready to move on.

AL: What was it like shooting the last two films back to back?
CS: To me it seemed like we filmed “New Moon” and “Eclipse” back to back as there wasn’t much of a break between films. With “Breaking Dawn” it didn’t really seem too different. I enjoyed it and it made me work harder.

AL: Outside of films you do a lot of speaking and activism. Can you tell us what sparked your interest in that?
CS: I do a thing called “Be the Shift” which promotes youth to shift the systems that we have in place today. Most of those systems don’t work and we are trying to get youth to try and make a substantial change in those be it the actual environment or with their community. Any system designed to help people that isn’t working we encourage youth to help make it better and work for the people the way it was intended. I like to occupy my time and to give back plus I get a little uncomfortable with the spotlight so I use it to bring light to the charities I am associated with.

AL: Can you tell us about “Let’s Move”?
CS: “Let’s Move” is a great organization. I worked with the Obama Administration on this program and it’s informing people especially youth about the importance of exercising and to get up and move around. Childhood obesity is huge here in American and this program emphasizes the importance of exercising along with nutrition.  My part in the program is to help out in Indian country with the Native American population. There is a lot of malnutrition in these places so I am helping to inform those people about eating healthy and exercising.

AL: How did you get involved with the Obama Administration?
CS: They kind of came to me knowing I was very involved in my activism and me being in “Twilight” helped out a bit so it was really a no brainer. I guess we both found each other. (Laughs)

AL: Can you tell us about any other projects you having coming up?
CS: I start work on a film titled “Winter in the Blood” in a few weeks and I have another project that I am looking at as well. I can’t really say too much about it just yet but it’s a big one! I am really looking forward to it but we just have to finish dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. Since “Twilight” has happened it has opened a lot of doors for my career and I am really happy that I can be working as an actor.

Interview with Bronson Pelletier

Bronson Pelletier plays Jared in the “The Twilight Saga” series. Bronson also stars alongside fellow “Twilight” cast member Tinsel Kory in the upcoming film “Fishing Naked”. Media Mikes caught up with Bronson fresh off his return from this year’s Comic-Con convention.

Adam Lawton: What drew you to audition for the role of Jared in the “Twilight” series?
Bronson Pelletier: At first when I wanted to audition they didn’t give us a lot of information about the roles and were very secretive. I auditioned for the role of Embry at first and didn’t really have an idea what “New Moon” was. I had thought it was just some sort of aboriginal movie. After the audition I started to do my homework and realized it was part of “The Twilight Saga”. I went back for another audition and they had me read for Quil which was an entirely different character. I went to that audition a little nervous as the producer and director were there. When the audition was over they didn’t really give me any other information until about 3 weeks later when they told me I got the part. About three weeks before we started shooting I received the script and was told then that I would playing the character of Jared. I auditioned for two different characters and ended up getting something different. Jared’s great though because he’s part of the wolf pack right of the bat!

AL: So were your familiar with the book series prior to filming?
BP: I had no idea. I was totally oblivious to the whole “Twilight” thing.

AL: Did you take anything from your character in the books and apply that to your onscreen portrayal of Jared?
BP: Definitely! I always try to put a little bit of my actual self in each character I play so with this particular character I chose to make him a bit of a jokester.

AL: What has been your favorite part about working on the films so far?
BP:  There are probably two different things. The fans are just amazing! I love them and they are really diehards about the films. I also really enjoy the camaraderie amongst the wolf pack. We often end up hanging out outside of shooting which is great.

AL: What has been your experience with being recognized by the fans when you are out in public?
BP: It still seems very surreal. Here in Los Angeles not a lot of people will come up to you and say hello but, when you’re in the Midwest for instance you get recognized a lot more and people will come right up to you. It is just very surreal.

AL: Any good fan encounter stories for us?
BP: (Laughs) I was in Toronto doing Much Music with Kellen Lutz and the people at Much Music had put our faces on these underwear and girls were almost rioting to get them. On top of that I don’t know how the fans found out which room I was in but I was in my room at the hotel and there was a knock on my door. I looked out my peep hole and there was like 20 girls lined up outside my room. I think it was the bell girls because every time I would order food like 4 girls would come up to deliver one meal. I figured it had to be them but I have no idea.

AL: I was told you just returned from Comic-Con. What was that experience like?
BP:  This was my first Comic-Con experience ever and it was crazy! I didn’t expect it to be that big. The way I explained it to my friends because I am a big dork and love comic books and video games as it was a Mardi Gras/Halloween for nerds.

AL: Did you get to check out the convention at all?
BP: They tried to tell me I couldn’t go down to the lower floor and check stuff out but I told them it was something I really wanted to do. They finally said ok but told me I would have to wear a mask while I was down there. I ended up wearing an Optimus Prime mask which was a lot of fun. I had a total fan boy moment when I got to meet the guys from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.

AL: Can you tell us about “Fishing Naked” which both you and fellow “Twilight” cast member Tinsel Kory are in?
BP: It’s going to be a lot of fun to film. The film does involve a little bit of fishing but the film is going to be somewhat of a cross between “American Pie” and say “Supernatural”. The film also stars Elyse Levesque from “Stargate Universe”. We start shooting in September in Colorado. I am actually going up there soon to learn how to fly fish so I know what I am doing during the movie.(Laughs)

AL: Can you tell us about any other projects you have in the works?
BP:  Right now and friend and I have some other projects that we are trying to get up off the ground but other than those nothing else just yet.

Interview with Charlie Saxton

Charlie Saxton is known best for his role of Damon in HBO’s hit show “Hung”, along side Thomas Jane.  Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Charlie about the shows new season and what we can expect.

Mike Gencarelli: Can you give us some background about playing the role of Damon on “Hung”?
Charlie Saxton: It’s been a lot of fun. Like a lot of teenager around American Damon is going through this awkward faze where he is constantly changing himself and his image. He really is just trying to find out who he is. This season Damon has started a band with his sister which is really cool I think. They play a wide genre of music ranging from punk to ballads.

MG: How do you feel your preparation for the character has changed since starting with the show in 2009?
CS: There isn’t too much preparation as I see a little bit of Damon in myself. There are things that I find hard to express much like the character. For the most part I get to throw on some similar clothing from the previous seasons and just be the nice loving son.

MG: What has it been like working with Thomas Jane?
CS: Thomas is unpredictable, intense and fun. There is never a dull moment on set. You can always count on Thomas to bring the energy back up if we are having a slow or dull day.

MG: What else can you tell us about this season of “Hung”?
CS: The theme for this season is the two businesses colliding. There are now two pairs of ho’s and pimps. Basically it’s all about the battle between the two.

MG: Can you tell us about the film “I Am Ben” which you are producing?
CS: That was a film some friends and I shot last year. We are in post production right now and the film has been completely DIY. We raised all the money on our own. It’s come along really well. The film is about a writer trying to come up with a master piece but he just can’t come up with anything which is driving him crazy. I play his roommate who is trying to get him out and meet people. Eventually the guy starts seeing imaginary people which kicks off a love triangle between him an imaginary girl and a real girl. It’s kind of an indie comedy. We hope to have if finished pretty soon.

Interview with Brooklyn Sudano

Brooklyn Sudano is co-starring as Yvette Montgomery in the new film “5 Star Day”. Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Brooklyn about working on the film, her character and what she has planned next.

Mike Gencarelli: Can you tell us how you got involved with “5 Star Day”
Brooklyn Sudano: I had read the script after my manager brought it to me. I really liked it and thought it was an interested story. The film poses questions that I think a lot of us ask ourselves. I like to do films that make you think and question.

MG: The film has a lot to do with horoscopes. What are your personal thoughts on them?
BS: I don’t prescribe to them. I think we all have a purpose in the world. I also think there are certain characteristics that people born at a certain time of the year have. I am not looking at the horoscope everyday of the week looking to find out what’s going to happen to me. It’s not my cup of tea however a lot of people do pay attention to them.

MG: How did you prepare for such an emotional role of Yvette Montgomery?
BS: I think my character in the film is struggling. She is afraid to cause anyone harm. I think that is something everyone goes through. I drew from that depth to help me with the role.

MG: How was it working with director Danny Buday?
BS: Danny is full of enthusiasm and very dedicated to the project. I think we all jumped onto that. We all wanted to make the vision come true. We had a great time despite some really cold moments. Everyone was great to work with.

MG: Can you tell us about the really deep scene between you and Cam Giganbet?
BS: I think the film depicts that people can have connections with people that they may not expect to have connections with. Life sometimes takes a bad situation and turns it into a good one. We all played different characters with different issues however we all got something out of our unexpected connection with each other. I think this brings a lot of hope and it’s something that we try to bring to this world.

MG: What other upcoming projects do you have going on?
BS: I have another film that is in the process of being edited called “Five Hours South”. We shot the film in Italy which was awesome. Hopefully we will be hitting the festivals and getting the film distributed.

Interview with Danny Glover

Danny Glover is diverse well known actor who has ranged from work like “Lethal Weapon” series to “Saw”. Last year he took the hilarious role “Death at a Funeral”.  Danny is co-starring in the new film “Infected” along with a great cast Vinnie Jones and Beverly Mitchell. Media Mikes had a chance to briefly ask Danny a few questions about that film and his other films.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us a little bit about “Infected” and your role in the film?
Danny Glover: I play the character Locke. He is a sort of mad scientist who will do anything to advance his own experiments and at the same time profit off his diabolical conspiracy.

MG: What did you enjoy most about working on the film?
DG: This was a different type of role which involved a lot of action and I enjoyed playing the villain.

MG: Tell us what do you look for in a character when you approach a project?
DG: I like to see if the role challenging, does it give light to a person in the world or a character that is unexplored and unique.

MG: From having done horror like “Saw” to comedy/action like “Lethal Weapon”, do you have a genre that you enjoy to work in most?
DG: No, i don’t have one specific genre that i like better than another. What is most important is that I feel I can portray the character.

MG: You were absolutely hysterical in “Death at a Funeral”, any plans for more comedies?
DG: Of course I would do more comedies if the opportunity was brought to me.

CD Review: A Break In The Strom “Metonia”

A Break In The Strom
“Metonia”
Turkey Vulture Records
Tracks: 10

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

“Metonia” is the debut release from the Merrill, WI based metal core band A Break In The Storm. The album features 10 original tracks and is being released via Turkey Vulture Records. After listening through the entire album I had to sit back and really take it all in. Each song contained on the album is bursting at the seams with metal core goodness. Everything you could ever ask for from cookie monster vocals, to melodic harmonies, blazing guitar work, and solid drumming “Metonia” has it.

The overall mixing of the album I thought was done very well. Even with the intense nature of the music nothing was lost and each of the instruments could be heard very clearly. I was most impressed with the tracks “Beneath The Surface”, “Reflections” and “Roam This World” as all three had a great grooves while featuring a variety of transitions which made the tracks even more entertaining as they had an element of surprise to them. If you haven’t done so already give A Break In The Storm’s newest release “Metonia” a listen. You won’t be disappointed!

1.) Beneath The Surface
2.) My Last Goodbye
3.) Passenger
4.) Reflections

Film Review “Jack and Jill”

Starring: Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino
Directed by: Dennis Dugan
Rated: PG
Running time: 1 hour 31 mins
Columbia

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to make way for a new comedy starring the hilariously funny…Al Pacino? That’s right. Pacino has a small but pivotal role in “Jack and Jill” and, in a film full of people known for being funny, pretty much stands alone.

Jack (Sandler) is a successful creator of television commercials. One of his clients, the folks over at Dunkin’ Donuts, wants him to secure the talents of one Al Pacino to promote their new product, Dunk-A-Chino. But Jack has other things on his mind, mainly the upcoming yearly Thanksgiving visit of his twin sister, Jill (also Sandler). Where Jack has always been the popular twin, Jill has taken a back seat. Now, with their mother recently passed, the two must find a way to tolerate each other during the sure to be festive holiday season.

A one note joke that runs an hour and a half, “Jack and Jill” gives Sandler the chance to use the same “funny lady” voice that he used on his early comedy CDs. With his high pitched whine you almost expect to hear Jill proclaim, “they’re all gonna laugh at you,” or perhaps implore you to “play with your cock and balls for mama.” Along the way we meet many of the Sandler comedy troupe, including Allen Covert, who appears to be channeling the homeless man turned caddie he played in “Happy Gilmore.” Along with the regulars are some fun bits from such well known people as Jared from Subway and Vince, the Shamwow! Guy. We are also joined by his two young children: a young boy adopted from India when less than two weeks old and a little girl who is always curiously dressed exactly as her doll. The boy has discovered scotch tape and it’s fun to see what household item he’ll apply to his body next.

The premise gets annoying after awhile, but that is when Pacino shows up to make things interesting. He gets great laughs spoofing his serious side while on stage and, when his Oscar is accidentally damaged, zings the Academy Awards. He even manages to belt out “The Impossible Dream” from “The Man of La Mancha.” Pacino is truly, as they say in show business, a triple threat! And to see him play off his very stern on-screen reputation is a welcome treat. Hoo-ah!

The script loses steam shortly after it begins to boil, with the only new “idea” being to put Jack and Jill in another unusual situation. Look…they can jump rope! If anyone but Sandler had been playing Jill the film may have worked better. But his constant whining makes Jill more sympathetic, to the point where you can forgive her the occasional break of wind. Heck, when Pacino is on screen you can almost forgive anything.

DVD Review “Red vs. Blue- Season 9”

Directed by: Burnie Burns, Matt Hullum
Voices: Matt Hullum, Gustavo Sorola, Geoff Ramsey, Joel Heyman, Burnie Burns, Shannon McCormick, Jason Saldana, Yomary Cruz, Kathleen Zuelch

Running Time: 120 minutes

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Halo” has this huge universe that has been built around it over the years. I am sure that in order to truly appreciate “Red vs. Blue”, you need to be a MEGA huge fan of “Halo”. Well, I am not but I still enjoyed it…for the most part. This release contains the ninth season of the series. The season depicts two separate stories. The first one in uses the “Halo: Reach” engine in machinima style and continues after the finale of “Revelation”. The other part is presented with CGI and it’s storyline follows after the “Blood Gulch Chronicles”.

What I enjoyed about this season is that it really packed some decent action but was also very funny. The recorded dialogue is pretty sharp and witty. I have to saw though the machinima style is cool but definitely limited to its potential. The CGI scenes are freaking awesome but there really isn’t enough of them to make this rock. I would have loved to see more for sure. The one part that I had a issue with was the jumping between storylines…got a little confusing. From what I read about “Revelation”, in this season the machinima and CGI are not blended and each one actually represents a different timeline in the “Red vs. Blue” storyline.

The special features on the disc make this purchase worth wild for sure. First off we have commentary from directors Burnie Burns and Matt Hullum. It is fun and worth checking out. There are additional special videos and PSA’s from the series, which are short but definitely fun. The outtakes are also very funny and is a great addition. There are also deleted scenes and they are good but not great. The cast interviews worth a look also especially since you get to meet the people behind the voices. Lastly there are behind-the-scenes features which give some great insight into the production, probably the best feature.

A powerful father-figure runs a small “family.” His specialty is taking in young women who have had bad home lives. He talks to them, sings them songs and then eventually “cleanses” them (wink). If you’re thinking Charles Manson you’re not far off. Only this time the “M” in question is Martha. Or Marcy May. Or Marlene.

A mediocre film at best, the film is being heralded for what is truly its best feature: the breakout performance by newcomer Elizabeth Olsen (gratuitous mention that she is the younger sister of the famed Olsen twins). When we first meet Olsen, she is part of the working commune. One morning she wakes up in her communal bed and heads into the woods. “Marcy May,” someone yells after her, “where are you going?” Soon she finds herself in town where she goes to the nearest pay phone and dials. After ignoring the continuous “hellos” coming from the other end of the phone she mumbles into the mouthpiece. “Martha” comes the questioning reply. Confused yet?

The feature writing/directing debut of Durkin, the film has many freshman mistakes that, while they don’t bury the film, help slow it down. The movie is told in both present time and flashback. When Martha meets Patrick (Hawkes, an Oscar nominee for “Winter’s Bone), the head of the “family,” he tells her she looks like a Marcy May. When we join her in the present, reunited after two years with her sister (Paulson) and her new husband (Hugh Dancy) she is clearly oblivious on how to act. When she goes swimming she thinks nothing of diving in naked. And she has no idea what shes done wrong after she climbs into bed with sis and her hubby in the middle of their lovemaking. Both notice that Martha is acting strange but it isn’t until an hour and a half into the film that the magic question is asked: What happened to you? A rather choppy ending doesn’t do the film any favors either.

On the plus side, the performances are pretty solid across the board. Hawkes has a quiet peacefulness in his performance, yet still manages to project true menace. We can’t quite see through him, and that is what allows him to convince his followers to submit to him freely. But the star here is Olsen. If Hawkes is Manson then Olsen is Linda Kasabian. She has seen the little man behind the curtain and wants to run while she still can. Her performance puts this film on the “I like it” side of two and a half stars.

Finally they got it right…”Mortal Kombat” has been done the way it has been meant to. This series consists of nine episodes and explores an origin to the series’ most iconic characters in the “Mortal Kombat” universe. This series is gritty, violent and totally edgy. The prior attempts at this series failed to really capture the essence of “Mortal Kombat” but this one scores a flawless victory. The video on the release is fantastic especially on Blu-ray.  Since this is a low budget web series, the picture is clear and really crisp. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is also fantastic.  I wish this series ran longer than only nine episodes but I guess we will have to wait till Kevin Tancharoen gets a chance to turn this into a feature. You hear that Warner Brothers?!

The series has episodes which focus on the following characters “Jax, Sonya and Kano”, “Johnny Cage”, “Kitana & Mileena”, “Raiden”. “Scorpion and Sub Zero” and “Cyrax and Sektor”. Each episode focuses on the origin story for each character.  It really expands the back stories to each character.  With “Jax, Sonya and Kano”, we get a great two part episode kick off, which explores how Kano becomes his cyber-self.  The episode is a dark and very gritty. “Johnny Cage” features a lot more comedy then the prior but definitely kicks some major ass.  “Kitana & Mileena” is a two part episode which focuses on how Kitana discovers that she is the daughter of King Jerrod and Queen Sindel and was taken by Shao Kahn and that Mileena is a clone created by Shang Tsung. “Raiden” shows how the character became stranded on earth and needs to fight in the tournament.  “Scorpion and Sub Zero” is another two part episode and easily the best in the series focuses on the real revenge story between the two.  Lastly and the most CGI episode “Cyrax and Sektor” exposes the evolution of the two deadly cyborgs.

We all know that we can watch this series online, so why are we buying these on Blu-ray?…the answer is special features. Well I want to rave about it but it is a little lacking running only around 30 minutes total. I would have loved to see some commentary for each episode in the series.  The first feature called “Fights”, which focuses on the fights and stunts throughout the web-series. “Fan Made” reveals Tancharoen’s passion and vision behind the series. “Expanding The Netherrealm” is easily the best feature and delves into the process of resurrecting this franchise. “Mysticism” focuses on the characters and their powers.  “Gear” showcases the kick ass weapons used in this series.  Overall this is definitely worth the $15 bucks for fans of this franchise!
