3D Blu-ray Review “3D Safari: Africa”

Starring: Hunter Ellis
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Level 33 Entertainment
Release Date: September 20, 2011
Running Time: 90 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

“3D Safari: Africa” really takes you deep into the safari and makes you not want to leave. The film is visually amazing and allows us as viewers to experience the beautiful and exotic Africa in 3D. I really enjoyed that the film was hosted by Emmy award winning, Hunter Ellis. I am not sure what it is but I just love watching films about animals and beautiful landscapes. I always find that with these types of adventure documentaries that I always learn something as well. So sit back and get ready to enjoy a very entertaining 90-minute journey.

“3D Safari: Africa” has got it all from hot air balloon rides to a wildebeest stampede to a zebra up again a crocodile to a mother cheetah searching for her lost cub. The film has emotion and is action packed. Who doesn’t love to watch animals up-close-and-personal in 3D, including lions, leopards, hippos, hyenas, zebras, giraffes and many more.

I have seen many 3D Blu-rays. This one looks sharp in 3D but its overall video quality is decent. The audio is enjoyable though boasting a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. If you are looking for extras on this disc, you might also be disappointed. There is only one short extra included, a short 3D film called “Living Large: Hippos and Rhinos”.

3D Blu-ray Review “Jillian’s Travels: Africa”

Directed by: Craig Tanner
Starring: Taylor Hender, Garrett Ryan
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Level 33 Entertainment
Release Date: April 10, 2012
Running Time: 60 minutes

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

When it comes to education in 3D, I am not going to say no. Africa is a very common subject for this format. Unfortunately, this film would have been a lot more entertaining with the annoying Jillian and her adventures. I know this was aimed at kiddies but I couldn’t even go to that level. The girl was such a snot brat and did not appeal at all. Also the actually safari scenes were ok since she was nowhere to be found besides narrating. If you want to see a cool 3D feature on the Africa check out “3D Safari Africa”.

The film focuses on Jillian Palmer and her brother, Jack as they take a trip with their parents to an African safari. The narrative is told through (annoying) video diaries discussing there journey and trying to educate.   The biggest annual migration of mammals in the world is featured in this which was shot from a hot air balloon while over the Savannah.  Since this is a 3D film, there is focus on cool shots of lions, leopards, hippos, hyenas, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, vultures, gazelles, flamingos and many more.

Jillian’s Travels: Africa deliver a generally great 3D presentation. It’s video is sharp and looks bright and vibrant. The sound goes well with its Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, if you can get over Jillian’s annoying voice. The special features are lacking much like the film. There is only one real extra included, which is an short bonus film called “Elephants 3D”. Lastly there is a 3D trailer for “Jillian’s Travels” and More From Level 33 Entertainment.

3D Blu-ray “Shock Labyrinth 3D”

Directed by: Takashi Shimizu
Starring: Ai Maeda, Suzuki Matsuo, Shoichiro Masumoto
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by: Well Go USA
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Running Time: 89 minutes

Film: 1.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1.5 out of 5 stars

If you have seen Takashi Shimizu’s past work, this is a warning that “Shock Labyrinth 3D” is nothing like any of his other work. I thought that the mix of Takashi Shimizu and 3D horror would have been a match made it heaven. Instead, I found myself bored out of my mind. The 3D was absolutely terrible and that is a rare sentence you will see me write. It was poorly shot and even out of focus in some scenes. The spooks in “The Grudge” still haunts me and I was hoping to get scared in 3D but there was not even one scary aspect in the film, unless you count falling asleep.

The film follows a group of teenagers, who find a friend who has been missing for 10 years though it is not a warm welcoming. There was a lot of mystery behind her disappearance it and led back to a labyrinth haunted house inside an abandon hospital. The friends find themselves drawn back to the hospital but are unable to leave once things go array and they find out the reason for their returned visit. The friend realize that their missing friend has plans to get revenge for leaving her a decade back.

The Blu-ray presentation overall was not impressive at all. The video had some major issues with clarity and completely misused the 3D format. The sound on the film is ok but nothing special with its Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, though I found myself watching in English dub to avoid the terrible 3D Japanese subtitles. The film is a combo pack and also came with a DVD 2D version of the film. The 3D Blu-ray disc also came with a 2D version of the film but I do not think it would matter since it a bad movie, 3D or not.

The special features on this Blu-ray are just as bad as the film is. All of the extras are obviously subtitled as well. There about 30 minutes of interviews included. There is a brief behind-the-scenes featurette, nothing worth watching. Lastly there is a press conference footage which is also extremely short.

3D Blu-ray Reviews “3D Magic Forest & Mystic Mountains”

Directed by: Marton Prech
Distributed by: Ultimate 3D Heaven
Release Date(s): October 1, 2011 (Magic Forest) / June 14, 2012 (Mystic Mountains)
Run Time: 70 minutes (Magic Forest) / 140 minutes (Mystic Mountains)

Our Scores: 3 out of 5 stars

I enjoy watching 3D Blu-rays and I enough watching beautiful landscapes. Put them both together and you get both “3D Magic Forest & Mystic Mountains”. These Blu-rays are very simple yet unique. They take you on a very tranquil and relaxing journey through some amazing landscapes. There is no narration or speaking in either of these films just relaxing spa-like music from Szabolcs Kovi. The music is definitely relaxing, perhaps too relaxing.

“3D Magic Forest” takes us through a visual journey of the Hungarian National Park Bukk. The film runs just shy of an hour and looks great in 3D. “3D Mystic Mountains” run about 40 minutes as well and focuses on Austria’s beautiful mountains and lakes. Ultimate 3D Heaven released these films in beautiful full 1080p with 24 FPM. This really adds to the scenary. I do not think this would be as interesting if it wasn’t in 3D, since it really makes the visuals pop.

While I was watching the television, I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a scrolling screensaver. I do not see myself ever visiting these locations so it was cool to get a chance to see them in 3D. Each Blu-ray includes full versions of Blu-ray 3D, Green-Magenta and Red-Cyan Anaglyph (3D Glasses Not Included). So even if you don’t have the new cool 3D TV’s, it also works with old school red/blue glasses but not as cool for sure.

3D Blu-ray Review “History of the World in Two Hours”

Original Aired on: The History Channel
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: A&E Home Video
Release Date: May 15, 2012
Runing Time: 88 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I don’t know what it is about programs on The History Channel but I am total sucker. Especially about the cool topic like the creation of our world! And especially in 3D! This is not the first time The History Channel has released their specials in 3D, there was “WWII in 3D”, which was released earlier this year. Overall, I was entertained and also learned a little bit as well.

This special focused on everything about our world from the formation of the earth to the creation of life to the growth of civilization. The CGI is very impressive and works really well with the 3D. The visual effects really popped out and really sold the special for me.  I just wish that this wasn’t limited to two hours and lasted longer as a series. Though for what it is it definitely flies through 14 billion years of history quite well and still manages to keep your interest spiked.

There are no special features included on this release, so that is a little disappointing overall but they have the two hours so packed with information and entertainment, I barely realized. The only thing about this film that made me laugh is that it is called “History of the World in Two Hours” but only runs 88 minutes. But of course, it had to be adjusted for commercials on TV.  If anyone related to The History Channel reads this, please produce more specials in 3D, I have really enjoyed them thus far. It is a great way to take learning to the third dimension. In fact, I would actually love to see a full series in 3D like “The Universe”.

3D Blu-ray Review “Underworld: Awakening”

Directors: Björn Stein, Måns Mårlind
Actors: Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Stephen Rea, Theo James
MPAA Rating: R
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Running Time: 88 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 4 out of 5 stars

What is great about “Underworld: Awakening” is that even if you haven’t seen any films in series, you can still watch this film. The opening scene sums up the whole series and catches you up to speed. So what can you expect for the fourth film in the series? Well, surprising quite a bit. This film has more of everything vampires, werewolves, action and even adds 3D to the mix.  It is action packed and most important boasts the return of the sexy yet deadly Selene. In fact out of all the film in the series, this is easiest my favorite!! So if you are reading this Sony…let’s get started on “Underworld 5”!!

Kate Beckinsale returns to the role of Selene (after skipping “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”) and she is back with a vengeance.  She is honestly the most bad-ass female vampire/warrior ever to hit the screen.   In this installment, after being caught and confined for testing, she escapes only to find that the world has changed.  Humans have discovered about the existence of both the Vampire and Lycan clans.  The humans has started a war in order to remove both species. Things get a little more complicated when Selene finds out that she has a daughter that she didn’t know about during the time she was held and she is the target of both species.

Let’s focus for a second on the film’s 3D.  This is one of my favorite live action 3D Blu-ray’s that I have seen seen.  Most live-action 3D Blu-ray are said to be darker, this one puts that statement to rest.  The film itself just uses the 3D so well, holds a constant depth and also rocks out with the film’s constant action. This all goes along well with the film’s amazing 1080p transfer and 2.40:1 aspect ratio.  So, this film not only looks amazing it also sounds even better.  Sony packed this Blu-ray with a super impressive DTS-HD MA 7.1 track and really pushes the format to the max.  This film also comes with a standard Blu-ray and DVD of the film, as well as an Ultraviolet digital streaming copy.

The special features like the film are also very impressive. Firstly there is a massive commentary track with directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, producers Richard Wright and Gary Lucchesi, executive producer and visual effects supervisor James McQuaide.  Everything is covered her from proudction to effects, very highly recommended.  “Selene Rises” focuses on the return of Kate Beckinsale playing Selene. “Casting the Future of Underworld” looks at the series new player, Theo James and India Eisley and plans for future installments. “Resuming the Action” talks about shooting in 3D and creating the film’s amazing action sequences.  “Building a Better Lycan” showcases the plans to create better werewolf visuals for this installment.  “Awakening a Franchise, Building a Better World” is a general making-of featurette and also touches on revamping this series. “Previsualization Sequences” are exclusive to the Blu-ray 3D release and includes six scenes.  Lastly there is a Blooper Reel and Music Video for “Heavy Prey” by Lacey Sturm Feat. Geno Lenardo.

Shakin’ the Indie Film Scene in 3D

April 17, 2012 – Kevin and DeAnna Cooper are ex-studio executives that recently signed a distribution deal for their independent 3D family comedy I HEART SHAKEY, the first film from their company Amarok Productions. The first independent film to be shot entirely in stereoscopic 3D, it is paving a new path for other filmmakers. To better understand what the Coopers have accomplished after leaving careers in the Hollywood studio system, you should know that 95% of independent films never make it to the marketplace. An even higher percentage of films never get a theatrical release. This is the story of “the little engine that could….”

I HEART SHAKEY, was shot in the Chicago area and stars Steve Lemme (Broken Lizard comedian, Super Troopers, Beerfest), Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy franchise), Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation movies), Alfonso Arau (Three Amigos), 12 year old acting phenom Rylie Behr and a rescue dog named Ebony. The movie also touts some of the hottest actors and comedians in Chicago including Andy St. Clair and Greg Holloman (of Second City fame) and award winning stage actress Janet Ulrich Brooks. A full list of credits can be found at their IMDb listing.

I HEART SHAKEY tells the story of a widower, his 9 year-old daughter and their devoted mutt Shakey. The film follows this family of three as they move from a small town to Chicago and are forced to get rid of their dog, who wreaks havoc in their new apartment building. It is a simple heart warming story geared toward kids and families that focuses on the importance of loyalty and keeping the family together. It has recently been approved by the Dove Foundation for family viewing. The teaser trailer is now live on their Kickstarter page.

Talent from the film will attend their red carpet premiere on June 13th in Chicago . Sneak previews over Father’s Day weekend (June 15-17) in Chicago will precede its theatrical and OnDemand release June 29th by Phase 4. The DVD arrives in stores late August. Spotlight Pictures will handle international distribution.

3D Blu-ray Review “The Three Musketeers 3D”

Directed: Paul W.S. Anderson
Starring: Orlando Bloom, Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich
Distributed by: Summit Entertainment
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 13, 2012
Running Time: 110 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

So this isn’t the first time we have seen an adaption of “The Three Musketeers”. This updated version is nothing revolutionary either but it is damn well entertaining. Plus we have never seen these swashbuckling musketeers kick butt in 3D. The 3D is very fun and recommended but the 2D version is actually equally as great. The film has some of the year’s best art direction and costume design. My main issue with these films have always been why are they called The Three Musketeers when there always are four? Nonetheless, this is a fun time overall and worth checking out for a good time and mindless fun.

This film is a stylized update to classic swashbuckling novel, “The Three Musketeers”. It follows the young hero D Artagnan (Logan Lerman) and his joining sides with the Three Musketeers. They take battle against Europe’s most elite warriors on a mission uncover a conspiracy that threatens to overthrow the king and push Europe into war.

The Blu-ray presentation is quite impressive. The video resolution looks sharp with its 1080p transfer. The audio was very impressive with the film’s action scenes and music boasting a great DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. This releases comes with the 3D Blu-ray and the 2D Blu-ray. All of the special features are found on the 2D-only release, There are no 3D or exclusive extras included in this release.

The special features are packed with great content. There is an interesting audio commentary from Director/Producer Paul W.S. Anderson and Producers Jeremy Bolt and Robert Kulzer. They discuss the films production in depth. “Access: Three Musketeers” is a picture-in-picture that provided great behind the scenes features you can watch during the film. This is my favorite feature on this release. “Paul W.S. Anderson’s Musketeers” is a short feature focusing on the cast and rebooting the story. “Orlando Bloom Takes on the Duke” is self-explained from the title. “17th Century Air Travel” talks about the film aerial ships. “Uncovering France in Germany” talks about shooting in Bavaria. There are about 15 minutes of deleted & Extended Scenes, mostly hit and miss. but worth checking out.

MPAA Rating: PG
Release Date: March 27, 2012
Running Time: 87 minutes

Film: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

I am not usually a big fan of strong faith themed films. But I am a sucker for 3D and talking CG animals. This film isn’t terrible but it isn’t very exciting either. It feels like one of those films that are sold at the supermarket register. The 3D effects are really good though and I did enjoy its presentation on Blu-ray as well. I thought the 3D was used well and fun for kids as well. I really couldn’t over the mix of modern day dialogue from animals in the time when Christ was alive and taking place in Jerusalem. If this film wasn’t so heavy on the faith, it might have been a lot better but with a title like “The Lion of Judah”, you have to expect that.

The film follows a lamb named Judah and his stable friends as they try to avoid being put up for sacrifice in Jerusalem the week before the crucifixion of Christ. Basically it is the story of Easter told from the perspective of a pig, a horse, a rat, a rooster, a cow and a donkey. The film also has a notable cast including Ernest Borgnine (“The Dirty Dozen”, “The Wild Bunch”), Georgina Cordova (Nickelodeon’s “Winx Club”) Scott Eastwood (“Invictus”, “Gran Torino”) and Michael Madsen (“Kill Bill”).

The Blu-ray presentation is impressive for a film I did not expect much from. The video looked sharp with its 1080p transfer, especially in 3D. The audio packed a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, which worked well with the effects and the music. The only special feature included on this Blu-ray is a short featurette called “The Lion of Judah: Behind the Scenes”.

Premise; Judah’s new friends, led by Slink the clever mouse (Ernest Borgnine) and Esmay the motherly cow (Sandy Patti) meet up with Jack (Scott Eastwood), a teenaged donkey with an attitude. Jack is less than happy to be part of the crew, but when the furry and feathered band of stable animals get separated and needs saving, it’s Jack who rushes to their rescue. Even the best efforts of Jack and the rest of the stable friends are not enough to save Judah. In this incredible tale of adventure and compassion, it takes the greatest hero of all, The King, to save Judah…and all the other animals, too!

3D Blu-ray Review “Immortals 3D”

Directed by: Tarsem Singh
Starring: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto, Stephen Dorff, Kellan Lutz
Distributed: 20th Century Fox
MPAA Rating: R
Release Date: March 6, 2012
Running Time: 110 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

When I originally saw trailers to this film, I was the least interested. The film looked cool but really nothing special. Well I was really pleasantly surprised as I really enjoyed it. It was shot beautifully with fantastic CG backdrops. The film was converted into 3D and really shines on its Blu-ray presentation. The image is absolutely crystal clear and really looks great in 3D. The audio packs an excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, in fact I had to turn down my speakers due to how impressive the sound was. To round up this fantastic release besides the 3D Blu-ray, this also includes a 2D Blu-ray and a digital copy.

This film follows Theseus (Henry Cavill), who is a villager that has been chosen by the gods to save mankind. After receiving a vision, the oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto), finds out that Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) is on a mission to find the legendary Epirus Bow in order to defeat the gods. With the help of Phaedra, Theseus joins up with a group of warriors in order to find the bow, defeat Hyperion and save mankind.

The special features are impressive but nothing is found on the 3D disc. The first is called “It’s No Myth”, it is a short featurette on Greek myth. “Caravaggio Meets Fight Club – Tarsem’s Vision” is a 20 minute four-part behind the scenes look at the production. There is an alternate opening and two alternate endings for the film as well. The opening is called “Young Theseus” and runs about 12 minutes and focues on a young Theseus before he meets John Hurt’s character. The ending is called “This is Our Last Embrace” runs about 9 minutes. I actually prefer it, it includes an extended death of Hyperion and more battle from the film’s final scene. The other ending is alternate death for Hyperion. There are about eight each running about a minute. Lastly there is a comic feature called “Immortals: Gods and Heroes”, worth checking out.

3D Blu-ray Review “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”

Directed by: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Josh Duhamel
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Distributed by: Paramount Home Entertainment
Running Time: 154 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 5 out of 5 stars

The “Transformers” series has really turned into a love it or hate it series. Fans have been doing nothing but fighting Michael Bay after the very over-producing and story lacking “Revenge of the Fallen”. “Dark of the Moon” definitely makes up for some the mistakes of the film prior but also presents a few new issues of its own. The major issue is that film needs to be a least 30 minutes shorter. When I originally saw this film in 3D IMAX, I wasn’t completely in love with the film at first. After letting it sit a while and especially watching it at home, I had a chance to really enjoy it a lot more.

The Blu-ray presentation on this release is absolutely fantastic. This honestly has to be THE most action packed Blu-ray in my library and also the best use of a Blu-ray to date. This film’s audio track also shines boasting Paramount’s Dolby TrueHD 7.1, easily one of the best I have ever heard on Blu-ray…and almost blew up my surround sound. The 3D on the Blu-ray really works well with the film since it was actually filmed in native 3D. There are no cheap tricks used in this film with the effect. I actually enjoyed the 3D quite more at home then in the theaters and thought it was a lot more focused. The story, well, that’s a another story but by this time in the series I think we have come to understand that these are movies about robots and visual effects.

Let’s discuss the other details of the release besides the 3D Blu-ray. This set also includes a Blu-ray disc of the film in 2D, as well as DVD disc. I am a big fan of the new digital copy service called, Ultraviolet. If you haven’t took advantage of this amazing digital streaming service, this is the film to start with.

The special features on this release are out of control and jam packed. The biggest feature on the release is “Above and Beyond: Exploring Dark of the Moon” is a super extensive five-part documentary that runs about two hours. The really dive deep into the development of the film ranging from the design to location filming to the stunts to the amazing post-production.  The next feature “Uncharted Territory: NASA’s Future Then and Now” runs about 30 minutes and focuses on exactly what its title suggests, no surprise here. “Deconstructing Chicago: Multi-Angle Sequences” is a visual effects featurette that is split in two parts.  The first is called “Previsualizations”, which allows you to view the visual effects raw with optional commentary by Director Michael Bay and Previsualization Supervisor Steve Yamamoto.  The second part is called “Visual Effects” which breaks down the VFX shots and also includes optional commentary by Visual Effects Supervisors Scott Farrar and Matthew Butler.  Both these features are able to be viewed individually or side-by-side with the final shots. “The Art of Cybertron” is a collection of still focusing on the world of the alien robots. “The Dark of the Moon Archive” is another production feature focusing on the 3D, the Moscow World Premiere and the stunt performers.  “The Sound of ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon'” is focused on the film’s sound engineering, which scores the film two Oscar nominations in Sound Mixing and Editing. Lastly there is a collection of teasers/trailers and other promotional material in “The Matrix of Marketing”. Overall amazing extras for an amazing release.

3D Blu-ray Review “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”

Directed by: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Starring: John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris, Thomas Lennon, Danny Trejo
Distributed by: Warner Bros Home Entertainment
MPAA Rating: R (Theatrical) / Unrated (Extended)
Running time: 90 minutes (Theatrical) / 96 minutes (Extended)

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

Traveling back to 2004 with “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”, who knew that today we would have a third film about these guys. Not to mention a Christmas movie…not to mention again that it would be in 3D. I think that this film is easily the best installment in the series. The Blu-ray video looks so fantastic and vibrant with the color especially the claymation scene. The sound is another issue if you are watching the theatrical cut either 3D or 2D it is amazing. The extended cut is missing the amazing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for a decent but lacking Dolby Digital track. Let’s talk about the 3D Blu-ray as it seriously makes the whole movie. The 3D adds so much to the film and really allows the film to additionally laugh at itself within the third dimension. You can still watch this film in 2D, but it does loose some of the fun factor and over-the-top cheese that this film delivers.

If you are looking to watch the extended cut in 3D, look again as it is only available in 2D. That is a little disappointing, but the extended cut is really nothing special. There are some gross gags added to the cut but the film works well without it. Next up, I am a HUGE fan of the UltraViolet Digital Copy and I recommend everyone to start using this great service. Other special features includes a bunch of EPK shorts hosted by Thomas Lennon called “Through the Haze with Tom Lennon”. They are hilarious and definitely worth checking out as Lennon was a great asset to the film. There is a look into the claymation sequence and includes picture-in-picture with its animated storyboard reel and the final scene. Lastly there are about four minutes of deleted scenes…funny but not hilarious.

When Kumar accidentally burns down Harold’s father-in-law’s prized tree on Christmas Eve, the two embark on another ill-advised journey to New York City to replace it.

3D Blu-Ray Review “WWII in 3D”

Channel: The History Channel
Running Time: 46 minutes
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: A&E Entertainment

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

Firstly, I am a sucker for History Channel programs…especially ones that are in 3D. Like said in the opening scene of the show, most of the photos and video from WWII have already been seen over the years. This show though provided new moments of WWII that has been hidden and buried until now. The coolest part about this is that they were captured in 3D with stereographs.

The man behind these 3D photos taken for the Nazi’s back during the war was Heinrich Hoffmann, the German photographer. This amazing collection includes Allied reconnaissance photos and images that documents the rise and fall of the Third Reich. The photos look absolutely amazing in 3D and its amazing that they have held up so well over these years. It is also interesting to be able to analysis the third dimension on some of these images.

If you thought that was enough this program also features an 3D film shot by the Nazis in 1943. The footage is a rare look behind the scenes into the Nazi during the war.  Overall, the video on the Blu-ray is presented perfectly and the sound is really sharp. My only complaint on this release is that I hoped that this could have been longer.  Maybe The History Channel & A&E will plan on releasing more 3D products in the near future.

Chickenfoot Earns Grammy Nomination for 3D Packaging of Critically Acclaimed “Chickenfoot III”

CHICKENFOOT EARNS GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR 3D PACKAGING OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CHICKENFOOT III ALBUM FROM eONE MUSIC and earMUSIC/Edel

Chickenfoot Scheduled to Play The Mark & Brian Christmas Show at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on December 15th Before  January 2012 European Tour

LOS ANGELES, CA—December 9, 2011—Chickenfoot –the supergroup featuring guitarist Joe Satriani, drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and frontman Sammy Hagar – have earned a GRAMMY nomination for the “Best Recording Package,” for the creative 3D design of their recent Chickenfoot III (eOne Music/earMUSIC/Edel) album. The GRAMMY-nominated band plans to return to Los Angeles with touring drummer Kenny Aronoff to perform at the Mark & Brian Christmas Show on December 15th at the Nokia Theatre and will embark on a European tour in January 2012.

Designed by art director Todd Gallopo, Chickenfoot III, features an elaborately designed 3D package with optical illusions and special codes giving fans a fully immersed creative Chickenfoot experience, creating a spectacle with spectacles.  With special “3D optical enhancers,” otherwise known as old-skool 3D glasses that come with each package, the cover and inside photos feature artwork that trick the eye by looking through the two different red and blue lenses of the glasses.  Having used a special state-of-the-art 3D camera rig to create the designs, Chickenfoot gives fans a truly multi-dimensional experience throughout the packaging that also offers a 3D photo of each band member with stats and Q&As, QR codes for behind the scenes 3D video content from the photo shoot on smartphones and much more.  A look through the red lens even reveals a very special message on the CD itself.

The band recently wrapped a sold out 2011 Road Test Tour that took them through San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Chicago and New York with a stop for a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.  In each city along the tour, Hagar made a donation to a local food bank in a special partnership with Feeding America to encourage fans to do the same to help fight hunger, an important message that he also intended to convey through the music video for “Three And A Half Letters (I Need A Job).”

The first single from Chickenfoot III, “Big Foot,” debuted at #1 on the Mediabase Classic Rock Chart holding the position for 11 weeks, earning over 1.85 million listeners, and the album received critical acclaim.  Chickenfoot III features 10 tracks with so many moments of epiphany that one can barely take them all in on first listen.  Colossal, stadium-shaking riffs abound on earth-movers such as “Alright, Alright,” “Last Temptation” and “Lighten Up.” Tradition meets innovation on the Nashville pop-tinged “Different Devil,” the Delta-blues flavored “Something Going Wrong” and the aching rock ballad “Come Closer.”  Chickenfoot III debuted at #9 on the Billboard Top 100 and follows the band’s 2009 debut album, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 100 and was certified gold for sales over 500,000 units by the Recording Industry Association of America.
