Blu-ray Review “Intruder”

Director: Scott Spiegel
Starring: Sam Raimi, Ted Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Danny Hicks, Renee Estevez, Elizabeth Cox
MPAA Rating: R
Studio: Synapse Films
Run Time: 88 minutes

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars

I remember purchasing this film on a bootleg VHS copy on eBay in the mid-90’s since I was a mega fan of the “Evil Dead” series”. If you are unaware this film is jam-packed with alumni from that franchise and even has Sam Raimi in an acting role. This release features an all-new 2K high-definition transfer of the original uncut, uncensored version. Along with the restored Blu-ray, this set also includes a DVD of the film. The transfer is definitely well done and features the original restored sound. This film is such a cult classic from the 80’s and even though it is not the best slasher to come out of that period it is definitely appreciated by its fans.

The plot for the film is limited but it classic for 80’s slasher horror. It focuses on a shopping mart is that is being stalked by an intruder and it’s employees are being picked off one by one. The kills and gore in the film are fantastic and should be especially since they are handled by the Academy Award®-winning KNB EFX Group. Danny Hicks definitely takes the award for best performance. He definitely nails the role of the crazy looney psycho. Besides appearances from Sam Raimi, fans of “Evil Dead” can also look out for Ted Raimi, Danny Hicks and of course a brief cameo from Bruce Campbell. Synapse Films is on roll with their amazing horror releases and have no disappointed yet. I can’t wait to what they are going to restore and release next.

The special features includes on this disc are fantastic (as always with Synapse). I really enjoyed the audio commentary with Scott Spiegel & Lawrence Bender. There is a great 30+ minute featurette called “Slashed Prices: The Making of Intruder”, which has great interviews and analysis from the cast and crew from the film…yes even Bruce Campbell. There are “Never-Before-Seen Extended ‘Murder’ Sequences”, which are also very interesting and come from the work print of the film. I really enjoyed the complied “Outtakes from NIGHT CREW Short Film” into a six minute clip with added music from director Scott Spiegel”. The “Cast Audition Tapes” are definitely a hoot and worth checking out. Lastly there is a “Behind-the-Scenes Still Gallery” and the “Original Theatrical Trailer”. Fantastic extras for a fantastic release.

Blu-ray Review “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls – Live in Texas ’78”

Starring: The Rolling Stones
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Running time 105 minutes

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars

I remember listening to the cassette of “Some Girls” with my uncle back in the late 80’s. It is definitely considered by fans to be one of The Rolling Stones’ very best. This concert was the bands 1978 tour to support the album and it was the time when the album had hit the #1 spot on the US charts. The concert was filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 18th, 1978. The concert was really featured the band focusing on their music with little or no focus on its staging, though The Rolling Stones still deliver a very energetic performance.

The Blu-ray release for this concert is really clear and crisp. The footage was originally shot on 16mm film and has been restored, remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original tapes. The sound is very clear and definitely sounds great on the Blu-ray. The movie features many classics including “Honky Tonk Woman”, “Tumbling Dice”, “Brown Sugar”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, “Miss You” and “Beast of Burden”. If you are fan of the Stones, this is definitely a no-brainer and a great opportunity to see the band its prime peak.

There are tons of great bonus features included on this release as well. There is a newly filmed interview with Mick Jagger, which is very fun. There is a great sketch from Saturday Night Live, October 1978, featuring Dan Aykroyd as Tom Snyder interviewing Mick Jagger. It is very funny and a fantastic feature. Also included from Saturday Night Live and introduced by Laraine Newman is “Shattered”, “Respectable” and “Beast Of Burden”. There are excerpts from a ABC 20/20 Special, introduced by Hugh Downs with interviews by Geraldo Rivera from June 1978/ This includes interviews with Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Bill. Lastly there is another interview with Mick from Aug 2011 conducted in France. The interview runs about 15 minutes and honestly, I could listen to Mick talk for hours. Great features overall for a great release. Congrats Eagle Rock Entertainment for delivering again.

Blu-ray Review “Deep Purple + Orchestra: Live At Montreux 2011”

Directed by: Stephen “BK” Bentley-Klein
Starring: Deep Purple
Rating: Unrated
Run Time: 115 Mins.
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love rocking out to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”? Such a great track. This Blu-ray was recorded on the closing night of Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival on July 16, 2011. The band re-invented their classic catalog with the help of a symphony orchestra. This is common for recent bands to do like Metallica, Kansas and Queensryche. I really enjoy the new take on great classics that playing with an orchestra presents. These guys still know how to deliver an entertaining concert. Overall this is a must for fans of Deep Purple, especially if your want to catch their classics with a twist.

The Blu-Ray release looks visually great even in 1080i video presentation. The sound also delivers these tracks perfectly in it DTS-HD surround sound track. Some of the great classic included on this concert is “Highway Star”, “Strange Kind of Woman,” “Lazy,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Hush,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Black Night,” and “Smoke On The Water”. I think the orchestra really adds a new twist on these songs and the band Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums), Roger Glover (bass), Steve Morse (guitar) and Don Airey (keyboards) really seemed to be getting into it along with them.

The concert runs a decent 115-minutes and includes a great theatrical presence from the band. It shows that Deep Purple can still deliver some hardcore kick ass classic rock. There is great in depth interview included on the Blu-ray which has the band chatting about their music and the tour. It is very informative and definitely worth checking out. Whether you are Deep Purple biggest fans or just finding out about them (Thanks to the video game “Rock Band”), this is definitely worth checking out.

Blu-ray Review “Usher: OMG Tour- Live From London”

Starring: Usher
Rating: Unrated
Run Time: 104 Mins.
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I have never been a BIG fan of Usher’s music, but I am not denying that he is the reigning King Of R ‘N B. He album sales are in the multi-millions and he is known all the around the world. This concert was filmed in high definition at London s O2 Arena in the spring of 2011. The “OMG Tour” was to support Usher’s recent chart topping “Raymond V Raymond” album. One thing you gotta give to this show and to Usher himself is that the guy knows how to put on a show. The show is more like a stage production with fantastic lighting and amazing pyrotechnics. He also pulls a Madonna and Cher with multiple costume changes. The show also boosts some really intense and fascinating choreography, which gives the show the amped up production that actually tells a story.

The picture on this Blu-ray is clear and even though it is only 1080i (like most music Blu-rays), it looks really good. The audio is key for a music Blu-ray and this one packed a solid DTS HD Master Audio track. It is very impressive and the songs sound great. If you like his early hits you got “You Make Me Wanna”), he also includes his ballads like “Nice & Slow”, love songs with “There Goes My Baby” and of course the big hits with “Yeah”. Usher is not just a singer he is a performer and he does a decent job in this show to entertain his audience. If you are an fan of his music than this disc is a new-brainer. If you are not a big fan, like me, this might make you one.

There are some decent bonus features on this release as well including a very interesting behind the scenes look in “On The Shoulder Of Giants”. It focuses on Usher and his team as they put together the show. Also included is a short piece about Usher’s New Look Foundation in London called “New Look”. Overall this is a pretty impressive release and it has been very enjoyable to check out.

CD Review: Slash “Made in Stoke 24/7/11”

Slash
“Made in Stoke 24/7/11”
Number of Discs: 2
Running time: 160 mins
Label: Eagle Records

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Slash is one of the greatest guitarist in the industry. This 2011 live release was recorded at the Victoria Hall in Stoke On Trent on July 24th. A cool fact about this show, is that it marks Slash’s return to his childhood home. Now obviously you know that Slash is know best for his guitar work but on this record the vocals were handled by Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge. Let me tell you Myles totally rocks on vocals and nails some really great Guns N’ Roses tracks. Since this tour was to promote Slash’s debut album, the setlist featured tracks from that album, but also from his band work with Snakepit, Velvet Revolver and of course classic songs that he co-wrote for Guns N’ Roses.

I gotta tell you listening to the guitar work on this album is really loud but also focused and clear. I found myself busting out the air guitar throughout listening. Fans of Velvet Revolver, keep an eye out for “Slither”. Fans of Guns N’ Roses, keep an eye out of “Civil War” (in which Myles Kennedy nails), “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City” (which also closes the show). Slash rips the hell out of that guitar and Myles Kennedy impresses with his amazing vocal work.  Also notable that the set includes a jam packed two disc set with a decent insert included as well.  Whether you are fan of Slash’s solo work or no, I actually think it rocks pretty hard, this album is worth checking out.

Concert Review: Queensryche “30th Anniversary” Tour – Orlando, FL

Queensryche
“30th Anniversary” Tour
House of Blues, Orlando, FL
November 12, 2011

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

Over the course of their career since forming in 1981, Queensryche have gone from playing large arenas to support huge-selling albums like “Operation: Mindcrime”, “Empire” and “Promised Land” to playing smaller theatres and clubs to promote a roster of spotty and occasionally downright awful releases since the departure of lyricist and guitarist Chris DeGarmo in 1997. Since then, the band has tried various means to attract crowds including a tour in which the set lists were mostly comprised of covers (to support the “Take Cover” album), a massive theatrical stage show that resembled a Broadway musical (the “Operation: Mindcrime II” tour) and even an adults-only cabaret tour that featured go-go dancers, contortionists, drag queens and a dominatrix.  To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “Life is like a Queensryche concert.  You never know what you’re gonna get.”

So, it was with great trepidation that I walked through the doors of the Orlando stop of their “30th Anniversary” tour – one that, in theory, was also embarked upon to support their most recent studio album “Dedicated to Chaos”. Given that “Chaos” is one of their weakest efforts to date, I very much hoped that the show would be retrospective in nature and cover a variety of their finest songs from the past three decades rather than one that would be dominated by the latest misfire. So, as the houselights dimmed, I crossed my fingers and prayed for the best.

From the now darkened room, two video walls on either side of the stage sprang to life and, underscored by a digitized sea of flames, the covers of every studio album the band had released materialized and faded, the hit albums receiving huge amounts of applause; the misses…well…not so much. After the appearance and disappearance of the “Chaos” cover art, Queensryche blasted into action with the appropriately titled “Get Started”, the opening track from that album. While the song caused me to speculate that the concert might indeed be dominated by the new release, “Started” played quite well live and lead vocalist Geoff Tate immediately established a dominating larger-than-life animated stage presence that would keep the audience in his clutches throughout the entire show. But would it remain “Chaotic”?

Luckily, it didn’t.

Only one other song from “Chaos” was played (“At the Edge”) during which Geoff Tate donned a saxophone and added his own instrumentation to mixed results. The rest of the 19-song set featured the classic songs that fans of the band regard as their greatest – and ones that could easily convert newcomers to do the ‘Ryche thing from there on in.

The show was probably the tightest that I’ve seen the band play since the “Hear in the Now Frontier” tour in 1997, the last that DeGarmo would participate in. Tate’s voice is still in peak form and the core rhythm section since the group’s inception, bassist Eddie Jackson and powerhouse drummer Scott Rockenfield, remains one of the best in the heavy metal genre. Guitarist Michael Wilton has also been a constant, but the post-DeGarmo years have seen him trade licks with three other axemen. The most current, Parker Lundgren, is undeniably the best of the batch and the synergy between the two guitarists rivals that of the band’s banner years.

Because of this, this iteration of the group was able to infuse new life into their staple songs. As could be expected, tracks from “Operation: Mindcrime” and the hugely successful “Empire” dominated the set list. Their 9 other studio albums were represented as well and included classics from early in the band’s career such as “NM 156”, “Screaming in Digital” and even “The Lady Wore Black” and “Queen of the Ryche” from their 1982 self-titled debut EP. The band truly seemed to enjoy this trip down memory lane and their assembled legion of followers reacted with huge enthusiasm as the group dished out mutual favorites.

One can only hope that Queensryche can maintain the level of lucidity and intensity they so readily exhibited at the House of Blues. At their peak, the band brought a level of sophistication and intelligence to heavy metal that hadn’t been seen before and, in so doing, raised the bar so high for the genre that the group itself frequently couldn’t clear it. As Queensryche enters into their fourth decade, the future could be a very bright one for them – as long as they continue to remember how it started.

Behind The Screen: Everyone’s a Critic!

This past week brought a little notoriety both to MediaMikes and to me personally. With a click of the mouse I entered a favorable review of the new Adam Sandler film “Jack and Jill” and apparently, when I did this, I caused the end of the movie going world.

I’ve been writing film reviews since high school. And I’m sure since then people have disagreed with my opinions. But I was unprepared for the backlash I took from “Jack and Jill.” And it wasn’t the people that actually took the time to see the film and then comment. It was the people that not only HADN’T seen the film but had no intention of seeing it. The first three comments left for me on RottenTomatoes were simply, “F*** You!” In fact, out of the 169 comments left, the majority of them were critical. A lot of “How much money did Adam Sandler pay you” comments. Not a dime. We also received over 40 comments on MediaMikes. Thankfully only one dropped the “F” bomb. I made an attempt to explain myself but later on started getting as snarky as those commenting. For that I apologize. Mike G. and I appreciate the fact that you took the time to visit the site, even if it was for a couple of minutes. By far the nastiest comment I received was emailed to me. The entire comment consisted of: “YOU ARE A WORTHLESS F**!!!! WORSE THEN A N***ER. At first I thought to myself, “wow, Mel Gibson read my review.” But then I saw the return email address identified the writer as “tallmaninla.” Since Mel and I are the same height I wouldn’t consider him tall.

I won’t say I’m sorry that my review brought some attention to MediaMikes. That certainly wasn’t my intention, but we were featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, HLN television, MovieFone, The Huffington Post and I even had someone write an article trying to dissect my movie preferences. I would also like to point out that two other critics eventually liked “Jack and Jill.” And that out of almost 11,000 reviews from moviegoers who had seen the film, the average rating was 3 out of 5. My rating: 3 out of 5. Thank you average movie fan. I don’t write reviews for attention. I write them because I enjoy sharing my opinion of them. I’ve been a self-proclaimed movie nerd since 1975 (thank you Steven Spielberg) and will hopefully continue to be one until the day I die. If I ever lose my passion for everything cinema I’ll unplug my keyboard and go away.

I want to say a few things about what we do here at MediaMikes. First and foremost, we are two guys who like movies. That’s the job requirement. Same for our staff. We did not go to college to become writers nor do we think we’re writing the cure for cancer. OUR reviews are just that. We try to write for others who like movies. A lot of the negative comments I received also blasted me for not liking the film “Drive.” You know who also didn’t like “Drive?” The film critics for the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Leonard Maltin. And while I would NEVER presume to put my writing on the same level as theirs, I don’t think they received any comments telling them they had no business watching movies. One of my fellow critics here in Kansas City gushed all over “Drive” after the screening, comparing the director to Stanley Kubrick. He actually used the term “Kubrickian.” Really? After eight movies the guy’s Stanley Kubrick??? Kubrick’s eighth film was “2001: A Space Odyssey.” He’d already made “Lolita,” “Spartacus,” “Dr. Strangelove” and “Path’s of Glory.” And he still had “A Clockwork Orange,” “Barry Lyndon,” “The Shining” and “Full Metal Jacket” ahead of him. He WAS Stanley Kubrick.

I write reviews for people like me. People that want to be entertained for two hours. And if I’m blown away afterwards then that’s a bonus. I do have a pretty good knowledge of film history. If I were reviewing films in 1987 and had screened “The Untouchables” I could have told you that the scenes on the stairs of the train station were a homage to the Odessa Steps sequence in Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film “Battleship Potemkin.” But would that make you want to see the film more? Besides, Brian DePalma is so often accused of ripping of Alfred Hitchcock that I wouldn’t want him to be known for stealing from a dead Russian as well. Kevin Smith included a scene in “Chasing Amy” that had his stars comparing body scars against a nautical backdrop. Do I mention that he’s “Spielbergian” in his work or do I just know that Kevin Smith loves the film “Jaws?” I’ve made a total of three films in my life. Even won a couple of awards. But I don’t portend to know everything about movies. I know what I like. And what I don’t. And so does anyone that goes to the movies. Believe me when I say it: EVERYONE’S a critic.

Interview with Jamie Brewer

Jamie Brewer plays the role of Adelaide on the hit FX series “American Horror Story”. Media Mikes had a chance to speak with Jamie recently to discuss the show.

Adam Lawton: What made you want to get into acting?
Jamie Brewer: I grew up loving all forms of the arts, especially movies and theatre productions. I love watching this type of entertainment. I started acting in a theatre group when I was in junior high school and I really loved it. I have been in theatre groups and theatre productions ever since then and I am studying Theatre Arts in college. I just love to act!

AL: How did you become involved with “American Horror Story”?
JB: I first got word of the audition for the show from a friend of mine. They where looking for a young lady with Down syndrome who could act.  My headshot and resume were submitted and I was called for an audition and, to my surprise I got the part. I was so excited!!

AL: What do you like most being on the show?
JB: I love playing the part of Adelaide. It is a great challenge, because the character is very different from who I am.  I’m actually enjoying learning all the fundamentals of being part of a thrilling TV show. It’s just fun to be part of it ALL!

AL: What is it like working with such a great cast?
JB: It’s AMAZING! I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing cast. I am learning so much from everyone I’m working with on set.  They are all wonderful actors, this is a great experience. I feel so lucky to be part of this show. We are becoming a “BIG” family!

AL: What is the most difficult part of your role?
JB: Adelaide is a complex character, but the most difficult part of playing Adelaide is learning how to portray someone who isn’t always viewed acceptable to her mother and society. This is a new challenge for me.

AL: Do you have a favorite episode thus far?
JB: For sure, it was the “Halloween, Part 1” Episode.  It has a lot of great intense scenes.  Plus, It was especially exciting because I got to do my first stunts in that episode.

AL: Do you have any other upcoming projects?
JB: My agents are always looking for new material, but for right now my top priority is with “American Horror Story”. I hope to work in this exciting industry for a very long time. I really enjoy acting!

Evan Peters talks about his role in FX series “American Horror Story”

Evan Peters plays the role of Tate on the FX series “American Horror Story”. Evan has also appeared in several other television series and film. Media Mikes had a chance to speak with Evan recently about his role on the show.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about your character Tate on the show?
Evan Peters: Tate is a little psychotic and he has started seeing Ben played by Dylan McDermott’s for psycho analysis in an effort to cure the demons inside him. At the same time Ben’s daughter catches his eye and Tate takes a liking to her.

AL: How did you become involved with “American Horror Story”?
EP: I was lucky enough to be able to go in a read for the role after sending a tape in. I went through the whole casting process and am very grateful for how it turned out.

AL: Overall how have things been going on the show?
EP: Really good! I have been able to work with such an amazing cast. The subject matter of the show is very heavy and to be able to work with great people like Dylan and Taissa Farminga who has been fantastic.

AL: Were you a fan of the horror genre prior to taking the role?
EP: I always liked horror movies but they did scare the hell out of me. I was a little stressed out at the begging of shooting but it has turned out to be really fun. To be behind the whole process of staging the scares and how they are set up has been really cool.

AL: Do you have a favorite episode that has been shot so far?
EP: I think it was the one where you find out Tate’s back story. There was a lot of technical stuff in that episode. Our director was great and the shoot was really fun.

AL: How soon do you receive the scripts prior to shooting?
EP: They like to keep everything a mystery. At this point we get the scripts the night before we start shooting. I’m sure they have everything all planned but for some reason they keep us in the dark. (Laughs)

AL: Are you currently still shooting?
EP: Yes. We are going to be shooting till about December 4th. We have been working Saturday’s as time has been cut pretty close to finish each episode. The work is worth it and each director has taken their time and put their mark on the episodes.

AL: Has it been hard working with so many different directors?
EP: Yes. Every episode has a new director and by the end of shooting I really like working with that director. Then we start a new episode with a different director and I have to start all over again building a relationship.

AL: Do you have any other upcoming projects?
EP: Working on this series has opened a few doors for me. I think I want to branch off and do something a little less dark. I would love to do something funny and light.

DVD Review “Housewife”

Directed by: Alfred E. Green
Starring: George Brent, Bette Davis, Ann Dvorak
Distributed by Warner Bros Archive
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running time: 69 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

There is just something about classic films that are still are very entertaining even all this time.  I believe this is the first film I have seen starring Bette Davis.  She was nominated over 10 times for an Academy Award.  She is such an amazing actress and just has such a presence on the screen.  It is rare today that this an actress displays this type of presence. This film was definitely controversial and pushing the edge for its time especially dealing with adultery and divorce in the early 30’s.

The story for this picture is just so simple and yet still relevant today.  It is about a man who’s marriage is strained due to his lack of ambition in his job and his love life.  When he makes a change and starts his own company, he meet an old spark from high school and they form a relationship.  The story is definitely ranks heavy on the drama definitely in the second half.  Running just over an hour this film definitely entertains.  This is the first time that this great film has been released on DVD, thanks again to Warner Bros. Archive.  The transfer is very clear for an almost 80 year old movie.

Synopsis:
The pre-code tale of adultery that squeaked past the censors! Coming at the tail end of 1934, Housewife was released shortly before the imposition of the “Hays Code” would render its subject matter ‘verboten!’ This turgid melodrama finds modern bachelor girl Patricia Berkeley (Bette Davis) dueling it out with modern housewife Nan Reynolds (Ann Dvorak) for the affections and ministrations of Nan’s husband, William (George Brent). Ambitious office manager William finally succeeds in setting up shop for himself in the advertising biz thanks to help from copywriter Pat and ideas from housewife Nan. When his late nights working at the office with Pat turn into something else, Nan must decide if William is worth fighting for. That is, if Pat will let her. Davis is at her vamping, doe-eyed best as the jaded sophisticated Pat, a copywriter who knows how to spin the right line to lure a guy.

“Full Circle: The Live Anthology” (4-disc box set)

DVD Run Time: 64 minutes

Our Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The Jeff Healey Band’s “Full Circle: The Live Anthology” box set is a most-welcome breath of fresh air from the holiday-spawned scheme in which record companies drudge up every goody that an artist has ever recorded and repackages it in hopes that completists will then part with their cash and repurchase a mass of material, most of which they already own.

The folks at Eagle Records skip the usual array of greatest hits, previously unreleased studio cuts, dusted-off-from-the-vaults demos and special remixes that are typical of this type of scam and, instead, serve up three CDs worth of live concert performances: one from 1989’s Montreal Jazz Festival, another from the Switzerland-based St. Gallen Open Air Festival in 1991, as well a Toronto show from 1995. A DVD of the 1991 show rounds out the package. It’s a ballsy maneuver and winds up turning what could have been a posthumous insult to into a tribute that truly befits Healey and is so richly deserved.

The set lists from each of the three shows documented by “Full Circle” often include the same songs and, as such, provide anchor points by which the listener can specifically hear Healey and his band grow from a raw three-piece outfit that, while still immensely talented, could be somewhat ragged and repetitive in its instrumentation into a finely-tuned machine that was a force to be reckoned with. The performances showcase the band ripping through their own material (including the sentimental mega-hit “Angel Eyes”) as well as an assortment of revved-up covers that includes the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues”, the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You”. At the core of each and every song is Healey’s virtuoso blues guitar work and a bare-bones rhythm section that augments him perfectly. Envision ZZ Top or Neil Young’s Crazy Horse being fronted by Stevie Ray Vaughn and you’re pretty much there – save for one thing.

Only the DVD of the 1991 show allows the viewer/listener to discover the fact that Healey was entirely blind. Although often seated with his double-necked guitar positioned pedal-steel style in his lap and fretting in a way that more resembles piano playing, the video also captures him playing his axe behind his head, with his teeth and even with his feet. These flashy displays would seem indulgent and cliché if the musician presented throughout the 4 discs seemed arrogant and out to impress in a sideshow circus performer kind of way, but that’s far from the case. Healey’s frequent down-to-earth stage banter and ever-present true love of the blues consistently allows the music to outshine the man himself.

The only item that has been overlooked by the creators of the box set is the inclusion of any sort of write-up that explains why these three particular shows were chosen or any sort of biographical information about Healey. Liner notes from any of his contemporaries sharing their insights as to what made him such a consummate and gifted artist would almost seem to be a mandatory component as well. However, the only item included is a 4-page booklet that’s solely comprised of the track lists from each of the discs and restoration credits for the video footage contained on the DVD. Given that this text is already printed on the back of the standard-issue DVD case insert, it’s redundant and unnecessary – and a massive lost opportunity.

Regardless of this oversight, “Full Circle” is a well-envisioned package that, instead of being superfluous, becomes a necessary historical document. Fine musicianship rarely shines as bright as Healey’s and this set allows us to see a light that was extinguished far too early.

Interview with Jeremy DePoyster

Jeremy DePoyster is the rhythm guitarist for the metal-core group The Devil Wears Prada. The band recently released a new full length album titled “Dead Throne” via Ferret Records and is currently on tour supporting the album. Media Mikes caught up with Jeremy to talk about the new album as well as about the bands new iPhone app.

Adam Lawton: What can you tell us about the band’s new album “Dead Throne”?
Jeremy DePoyster: The album is not so much a reinvention of the band but more so a rediscovery. The album still fits in the mold of our previous releases while at the same time being a progression. There are some slower songs on this album which is a different sound for the band. I think the album is fun and heavy.

AL: Did you guys try any different approaches during the recording process of the album?
JDP: Yes. We pretty much did everything differently than we have in the past. A majority of the songs are written by our other guitarist on his lap top and we take them from there and re-work them. However we on occasion do write material together and jam on it as a group. That was what we did more so on the new record. All of the song structure was done ahead of time and by the time we were ready to go into the studio we had demo tracks for every song to use as reference.

AL: How many tracks did you guys go into the studio with?
JDP: The 13 songs that are on the record are what we took in with us. We had one song that wasn’t quite done yet but that was scrapped prior to pre-production. We knew going in that all the songs we brought were going to make it onto the album.

AL: How do you think the band has evolved since your first recordings?
JDP: I think it’s natural for everybody to progress as musicians. When we first started the band I was 18 and I am 24 now. I think we all have become more proficient at our instruments but also at how we approach songs and textures. For me I play a lot differently than I used to.

AL: How do you think this album stands out above those that have been released recently who are in the same genre?
JDP: I think you can see passion and reality over imitation. It is flattering to see a group of bands that have almost carbon copied what we have done as a band but, at the same time it’s not offering anything new to the musical world. I think that’s really the difference. We aren’t writing to sell records or make a career. When we started this band there was none of those things. We started the band to have fun and the other stuff just came along. I think that makes us stand out as well as the maturity of our material.

AL: Do you have a favorite track off the new album?
JDP: It depends on the day. Playing the songs live has also altered things a bit as well. I really like “Born to Lose”. I think that song is a good representation of who we are as a band. I also like “Chicago” because I wrote a majority of the guitar heard on that track. It’s a really personal song and is something we don’t normally have on our albums.

AL: Can you tell us about the “Zombie Slay” app?
JDP: We just released that a few months ago prior to us leaving for Australia. We have talked about doing something like this for a long time. Dan our drummer was really into the idea of having an app and having that communication with other I device users. All the other stuff out there we felt was just dull and boring. We wanted to make a game that would be super rad and could stand alone outside of the band. Over the past few years we have really taken control of what comes out of the band. We really try and have quality control over our products. We didn’t want this to be something a manager got on and tried to sell our fans tickets. We wanted this to be awesome! The guys did a really great job with it and the band was really involved with the testing process. (Laughs)

AL: What are the plans for the band the rest of this year and into 2012?
JDP: This tour that we are on now is really what is left for this year. This is our first big U.S. North American headliner in quite some time. We will be finishing this up soon as we have a lot going on planned for next year. Nothing has really been announced yet but everyone can be looking for those announcements soon.

To celebrate the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2”, there was a special celebration and some magic throughout the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Island Of Adventure park in Orlando FL.  This special event hosted by Warner Bros. celebrated not only the home entertainment release but also a decade of movie history by allowing fans to share their love for the Harry Potter films. During the day on Friday and Saturday, we were given VIP press park tours of Island Of Adventure and Universal Orlando parks.  Friday night was packed with excellent press conferences with the following talent and filmmakers: David Barron (Producer of “Half-Blood Prince” and “Deathly Hallow, Part 1 & 2) , David Yates (Director of Order of the Phoenix, “Half-Blood Prince” and “Deathly Hallow, Part 1 & 2) , Rupert Grint (Ron Wesley), Warwick Davis (Griphook/Professor Filius Flitwick), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan), Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley), David Bradley (Argus Filch), David Heyman (Series Producer), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), James Phelps (Fred Weasley), Oliver Phelps (George Weasley), George Harris (Kingsley Shacklebolt), Nick Moran (Scabior) and Stanislav Ianevski (Viktor Krum).

After a great day of touring the parks, Saturday night featured a red carpet media event at Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  The energy was very high during the red carpet event which ran from the middle of Island Of Adventure leading into Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  During the red carpet, the talent was on hand for interviews as they walked down the red carpet.  Even with all the red carpet action, the coolest event of the weekend had to be Warwick Davis conducting the Frog Choir.  This event was also held at the opening of Wizarding World of Harry Potter last year, but overall it was a very fun and amazing event.

The guests also had a chance to celebrate this event where they had the chance where they can celebrate their love of “Harry Potter” with the filmmakers, cast members and other fans.  The guests were able to attend an exclusive evening gala, autograph signings and Q&A sessions with stars from the “Harry Potter” films,  and lastly there were screenings of all eight Harry Potter films – including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” – at the AMC Universal Cineplex 20 in Universal CityWalk. Fans of the series were having “Harry Potter” overload. It was an event that could not have been missed.  If you were not able to attend this event, you still need to take a trip down to Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Island Of Adventure and check out this amazing attraction.
