DVD Review “Rice Field of Dreams”

Director: Daron Ker
Starring: Joe Cook, Phil Beaudoin and Mike Griffin
Water Buffalo Pictures
Runtime: 74 minutes

Our score: 3.5 out 5 stars

“Rice Field of Dreams” written and directed by Daron Ker is a documentary about Joe Cook and a team of 22 Cambodian Baseball players brought together as one team to play and compete as the first ever Cambodian National Baseball team. With the help of Major League baseball and several coaches from North America the team prepares for its first attempt at bringing baseball glory home to Cambodia. The bottom line is take 74 minutes out of your schedule and check out this film.

“Rice Field of Dreams” was a great film that not only showcased the triumphs and struggles of the first ever Cambodian National Baseball team but it also showed some of the past struggles for people who lived in Cambodia. Director Daron Ker a native of Cambodia really made a great film which as he puts it in the start of the film is not a typical “feel good” story instead the film is a straight forward documentary which shows the positives and the negatives of those in the film. Throughout the film you get to hear both players and coaches reactions to certain events and what they hope to get out of the experience. Though the film is centered on the baseball team you don’t have to be a fan or have an understanding of the game to appreciate this film.

DVD Review “Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated”

Director: Mike Schneider
Neoflux Productions
Runtime: 101 minutes

Our score 3.5 out 5 stars

“Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated” directed by Mike Schneider is an animated film version of the 1968 George Romero film. The film features work by various artists, animators and filmmakers from around the world who together created an animated revision of the horror classic “Night of the Living Dead”. Through various mediums such as animation, clay-mation and puppetry the joint group of artist tell the classic story of Barbara and her unlikely encounter with the undead while adding a fresh comedic twist to the films original story.

This revision of George Romero’s horror staple was spot on. It also had some added laughs which were provided by some really great animation and clay-mation additions. “Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated” was filmed entirely in black and white which kept it true to the 1968 original.

About 2 minutes into the film I really stopped paying attention to the story and focused all my attention on the different artist interpretations of the scenes depicted in the film. Various types of sketches ranging from stick figures to extremely detailed drawings made this film really fun to watch. My personal favorite would have to be the clay-mation scenes which were very reminiscent of Sunday morning “David and Goliath” episodes. This film yielded a fun and enjoyable film to watch alone or with friends. Get your hands on a copy of this film, kickback and, prepare for a good time.

DVD Review “Strigoi”

Directed by: Faye Jackson
Starring: Constantin Barbulescu, Camelia Maxim, Catalin Paraschiv
Distributed by: Breaking Glass Pictures
Rated N/A
Running Time: 105 minutes

Our Score: 2 out of 5 stars

After seeing the promo poster for “Strigoi” I was somewhat excited to sit down and watch the film. However I guess I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up as “Strigoi” was nothing but a dull drawn out attempt at a dark comedy/horror/vampire film. The films basic concept was nothing new as it was your typical story of a town turning on two of its residents and killing them. The two then return from the grave as extremely hungry vampires hell bent on carry out their revenge on the towns people responsible for their deaths. “Stigoi” was in my opinion just really hard to figure out what type of film I was watching and how I should take the characters. At times there were touches of comedy but then the film would take an extremely dark serious turn leaving the previous scene in question as to whether or not it was in the right film.

“Strigoi” written and directed by Faye Jackson is the story of Vlad (Catalin Paraschiv) a fledgling med school student who returns to his grandfather’s village after a trip to Italy. Upon his return Vlad stumbles across an odd cast of characters that all seem to be hiding something. Determined to get to the bottom of the strange occurs in the small Romanian town Vlad quickly finds that he may be up against something other than just odd towns people. “Strigoi” had potential however I think the film would have been a bit more accessible if the director had focused on one genre and maybe have jumped on the whole vampire band wagon.

DVD Review “Asylum Seekers”

Directed by: Rania Ajami
Starring: Pepper Binkley, Bill Dawes and Judith Hawking
Crowned Heart Pictures/Kinetic Arts Production
Rated: N/A
Runtime: 104 min.

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5

“Asylum Seekers” a dark comedy written and directed by Rania Ajami is the story of six people who have decided they can no longer deal with daily life. In an effort to get a hold on reality the six people attempt to check themselves into a lushly appointed asylum. What the six people don’t know is that there is only one room for which they must compete against each other to gain access.

“Asylum Seekers” seems like a psychedelic experiment gone bad! It’s as if the director crammed everything odd or awkward into this 104 minute spectacle. The acting in my opinion was sub-par at best however it was quickly overshadowed by the oddness of the film. “Asylum Seekers” has an interesting storyline and is full of interesting characters. If you’re in the mood for something off the wall then this movie will do the trick!

DVD Review “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy- Volume 1”

Starring: Larry the Cable Guy
Episodes: 10 out of 20 episodes
Running time: 376 minutes
Original channel: History Channel

Volume 1: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Something about Larry the Cable Guy is like a car accident…you can’t look away. No matter how corny or stupid he may be, he is damn entertaining. This show is funny and is also very informative. In the series, Larry travels America as he experiences different lifestyles, jobs and hobbies. that occur “only in America”. It is sort of like “Dirty Jobs” except the hillbilly version. I really enjoyed this series and Larry the Cable Guy is a good show host.

Here is just some of the things that Larry does on this season…Larry Makes Moonshine, Larry Goes to the Swamp, Larry Shoots Guns/Larry Gets the Horns, Larry Breeds Mules, Larry Races Dogs, Larry Gits a Gator, Larry Goes Trucking, Larry Is an Astronaut, Larry Rides with the Hells Angels and Larry Deep Fries Everything.

Larry seems to make fun of all these different lifestyles, jobs or hobbies but he does really seem to enjoy them overall. What I like about this volume of episodes the most is that there are no commercials, opening or ending credits. What this means is each disc, for a total of two, is just one 2 hour and 51 minute episode. It is work well when re-watching the series and make it feel like you are watching less and just keep watching.  I look forward to volume two of this season and hopefully season two.

DVD Review “Beyblade: Metal Fusion – Volume 4”

Directed by: Kunihisa Sugishima
Network: Cartoon Network
Episodes: 7 out of 51 episodes
Run Time: 154 minutes

Disc Score: 3 out 5 stars

“Beyblade” might be a little out of my age range when it comes to TV shows. I do not have kids yet but I do know how popular the “Beyblade” series is. It was not hard to catch up with this show prior to watching this DVD volume. This first series of “Beyblade: Metal Fusion” consists of 51 episodes, so volume 4 consists of episodes 22-28. Following this series, there is “Beyblade: Metal Masters”, and then Metal Fight Beyblade 4D”, each consists of 51 episodes each as well. I enjoyed this episodes overall.

The following episodes included are “The Fearsome Libra”, which show Ginga, Kyouya, Yu and Madoka are the final four left in the surival battle. “The Road to the Battle Bladers” follow Yu after he won the battle reveals he’s a member of the Dark Nebula. “The Beautiful Eagle” follows the meet of Tsubasa and how he has many secrets. “The Sniper Capricorn” has Kyouya going against Tobio, aka Captain Capri. “Tsubasa Flies Into The Dark” follows Tsubasa as he attempts to join Dark Nebula. “Intruders in the Challenge Match” features Kenta battling in the forest stadium and Hyoma battling in the river stadium. “Dark Gasher’s Big, Crabby-Crabby Operation” is the last episode on the disc and features Tetsuya as he follows Yu back to the Dark Nebula Headquarters.

Besides the episodes, their are no extras but kids will enjoy the fact that this DVD set includes an exclusive code unlocking special features, including the ability to battle other Beybladers on Beybladebattles.com.

DVD Review “Storage Wars: Season 1”

Starring: Dave Hester, Darrell Sheets, Barry Weiss, and Jarrod Schulz
Number of discs: 3
Studio: A&E Home Video
Rated: PG
Run Time: 418 minutes

Season 1 Score: 2 out of 5 stars

This show follows storage hunters Dave Hester, Jarrod Schulz/Brandi Passante, Darrell Sheets and Barry Weiss as they battle each other to win units. I am a fan of the show “Auction Hunters”, so I figured I should give this show a go. The show does not have the personality or entertainment that “Auction Hunters” has. Allen Haff & Ton Jones from that show are memorizing to watch on the TV and these guys don’t come close. These people are working these units out of desperation and these people are actually rather sad and I feel bad for them watching.  They are not knowledgeable about the business, which is why this show fails…not everyone can have a reality show. If A&E is reading this review, Dave Hester is the reason why I will not continue to watch this show.

The show takes a different angle on the idea of the show. Since the show has so many different types of personalities, this leads to a lot of fighting, bitterness and battling at each auction. Don’t get me wrong it does make for good entertainment but it also takes away from the reveal of the show. What I like most about “Auction Hunters” is there journey to sell the items and make money. This show features people that have their own shops so the sells are not instant and a lot assumed sales. I did complete watching this season but I will not be tuning in for season two. Check out “Auction Hunters” for a damn good reality auction hunting show.

Episodes includes on season one include:
DISC 1: High Noon in the High Desert / Railroad Roulette / Melee in the Maze / War on the Shore / The Old Spanish Standoff / All Guns To Port / Senior Center Showdown
DISC 2: Midnight in the Gardena Good and Evil / Collector’s Last Stand / School House Lock / Gambler’s Last Resort / Auction Royale / Makings of a Mogul / Trouble the Oil
DISC 3: Chairman of the Hoard / High End Heist / Young with the Gun / Skullduggery / Live and Let Bid

DVD Review “Clash”

Directed by: Le Thanh Son
Starring: Johnny Tri Nguyen, Veronica Ngo, Hoang Phuc Nguyen
Distributed by Indomina Releasing / Vivendi Entertainment
Rated: R
Running time: 97 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

“CLASH” is available on DVD as of 8/9

I have seen my share of Japanese, Chinese and even Thai action films but I have never seen a Vietnamese action film. They know how to kick some major ass. This movie was 97 minutes of non-stop action and fighting. The fight scenes were SO well done and shot perfectly. I actually found myself getting nervous watching the action in the film since it was so constant. The duo of Johnny Tri Nguyen and Veronica Ngo are perfect together and they completely steal the screen as the ass kicking action duo.

The story follows Trinh (Veronica Ngo) codename Phoenix, who is working for crime boss Hac Long (Hoang Phuc Nguyen) in order for him to the release of her daughter. She teams up with several mercenaries including Quan aka Tiger (Johnny Tri Nguyen) to complete the missions required. The two must come together to defeat Hac Long and sent them both free.

The extras on the film are good and definitely worth a watch. The first is called “In Conversation: Johnny & Veronica”, which was cool to watch because I really didn’t know much about this duo before this film. “Cast of Characters” is a showcase of the great character in this film. “Anatomy of a Fight” was easily my favorite feature due to intensity of the action scenes. Lastly there is a Music Video and Original Trailer. This is film is a must for anyone that like martial arts films

DVD Review “The Bleeding House”

Director: Philip Gelatt
Starring: Alexandra Chando, Patrick Breen, Nina Lisandrello
Studio: New Video Group
Rating: Not Rated
Run Time: 87 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Simple movie that starts off slow but ends strong. When you see film’s poster it doesn’t give much detail as to what to expect. What you get is a well paced film that combines horror and thriller, quite well. What I like the most is that the story is revealed in parts which shows its twists slowly spread out throughout. I really enjoyed the performance from Patrick Breen, I thought he played a really cool psycho and makes the film.

The story focuses on The Smith family, Marilyn and Matt, and teens, Gloria and Quentin. They are a family with secrets, who keep themselves. They are paid a visit by mysterious man named, Nick. They let him into their home and start to get to know him and all things feel right. He turns out to be a cold blooded killer, who thinks he is sent from God to punish the family for their past.

The extras on the disc are not great at all. First we have an alternative ending, presented by American Express, which is useless. Then two deleted scenes, both which are also useless to the film. Overall I enjoyed the film and even though the special features aren’t great I would still recommend this disc.
