4K/UltraHD Review: “Super 8”

  • SUPER 8
  • Starring: Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning
  • Directed by: J,J. Abrams
  • Rated: PG 13
  • Running time: 1 hr 52 mins
  • Paramount

JJ Abrams directs a love letter to Steven Spielberg about kids and a mysterious alien in 2011’s “Super 8.” . It’s “The Goonies” meets “Close Encounters” meets “E.T.” and very entertaining. It’s also an homage to the cinematic 80s tropes and is a heartwarming tale coping with loss and grief.

“Super 8” is celebrating its 10th anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to indulge in the brand new 4K UHD Blu Ray collection. Since the film is only 10 years old, it benefits from the high definition tremendously, as this is the best the film has ever looked on video. It has been encoded in TrueDolby HD sound, giving it a demo-worthy soundtrack that also incorporates some excellent LFE subwoofer activity that’ll drive your neighbors crazy!

The story is about a small group of teen misfits encountering a misunderstood extra-terrestrial. There’s much to absorb here though. We have a father and son who must live on without mom. We have an alcoholic father raising a daughter. We have a scientist involved in a government cover up. However the camaraderie of the kids seems to make all of these problems a bit lighter. The fact the kids are all budding filmmakers adds even more comedic flavor to the story. Throw in some of the best special effects of the time (Industrial Light & Magic) and you truly have a unique viewing experience. This film reeks of nostalgia and intentionally has a Spielbergian feel to it as well and that’s okay. It is obviously intended as it is a love letter to Steven Spielberg (the kids are perhaps the biggest indication).

“Super 8” is truly super great and highly recommended in the 4K format. .

8 of the Most Entertaining Home Security Systems from Movies

A need to protect our home is very normal and justified. Whether with installing a security system, alarms, additional locks, etc, it is something we do not take lightly.

In movies, on the other hand, things tend to go a little bit differently.

Without a doubt, those movies play on that notion of needing to protect ourselves, our family, and our homes.

Some of them do it in a comical, over-exaggerated way, some of them might toy with our fears and paranoia.

They might not always be completely realistic, but some of these security systems will entertain you and some of them just might make you think.

Panic Room

Home invasion is always a terrifying thought, so it is not surprising that it is a theme of so many movies.

A panic room seems like a reasonable (although probably an expensive) idea in order to keep everyone in your house safe right?

But it seems that even with a panic room, things can go very wrong.

For most of us, building a panic room might seem like an extreme measure, although no one would probably mind actually having one.

The Purge

It is a classic intrusion movie (or franchise to be exact). Here, the notion of a secure home is taken to the point of pure survival since the movie introduces us to the world in which all the crimes are legal for 12 hours.

So what happens when we face some of our worst fears? How do we defend ourselves?

Seems like with all the existing security systems that one could possibly obtain, it comes down to pure and primal survival instinct.

The Italian Job

Is there a more effective way of demonstrating the power (and flaws) of different security systems than a heist movie? Probably not.

We are talking about houses with a guard tower, professionally guarded by heavily armed men and attack dogs, safes, reinforced gates, online security systems, armored trucks, the whole deal.

But it seems like there is no security system that can’t be taken down if you are motivated enough (greed and revenge turned out to be quite the motivators in this case).

Bad Boys II

If you think about Tapia’s house, it seems like again we are talking about a strong defense system in a form of a tower and hired protection.

With a guard tower and an army of people carrying all sorts of automated weapons, this place seems like an unapproachable fortress.

In the end, though, detectives Burnett and Lowrey and a crew of highly trained SWAT members, CIA operatives, and DEA agents manage to completely destroy Tapia’s compound.

So, even an extremely guarded building like Tapia’s house wasn’t a match for the good guys.

What kind of a movie would it be otherwise? Would a real-life situation be played out differently?

We will leave that up to you.

All of the Batman Movies

With all the motion sensors, silent alarms, cameras, reinforced doors, and hidden passages and entrances (we all remember the one inside of a metal sarcophagus), the bat-cave is designed as a secret lair.

If you watched all of The Batman movies you might come to a similar conclusion – It does seem that considering everything that is at stake, Bruce Wayne (oops we revealed his identity) should have an even tighter security system in place.

In any case, surely most of us still thought about how great it would be to have a bat-cave within a huge mansion.

Well, until that day comes, maybe we could start by looking up some actual home security systems reviews.

Iron Man

We talked about DC, now let’s talk about Marvel (DC vs Marvel seems to be a constant debate so how can we mention one without mention the other).

What better way to protect your house than to be a tech genius/superhero Tony Stark. This billionaire, playboy, philanthropist was the largest weapons maker until he used that technology in order to build his first Iron Man suit.

Not a lot of people would dare to invade Iron Man’s place, especially knowing he has The Avengers on speed dial.

Yet in the third part of the franchise, with all the high-tech weaponry, and numerous Iron Man suits, Tony does fail to prevent his home from being blown up by a missile.

So maybe it is not quite the ultimate security system.

The Incredibles

There are not many security systems that are better than an omnidroid. It thinks for itself and is capable of withstanding almost everything. It is equipped with all sorts of powers than can serve for both defense and offense.

Although it seems you need to have quite villainous intentions in order to see an omnidroid as your go-to security system.

This kind of security system might not be quite possible in the real life, but it is surely entertaining on the screen.

Home Alone

Finally, let us not forget about the probably most iconic home security system in movie history.

It is of course the ingenuity of Kevin McCallister in one of our favorite childhood Christmas movies, Home alone.

With his wits and his sense of mischief, Kevin menages to outsmart two burglars (Harry and Marv) and protect his family home.

Seeing him make his elaborate plan of defense with toys and numerous household objects turning them into booby traps, entertained us all.

It is a kids movie that we all like to rewatch every now and then (especially around Christmas season).

In Conclusion

As you can see, all these security systems are not exactly applicable in the real world but they are absolutely fun to think about.

Whether they scare us, entertain us, or take us down the memory lane, you can always watch the same movies from a different perspective, having a particular aspect in mind.

Maybe it is time to watch (or rather rewatch) some of these movies.

8 Cool Things Students Traveling to Any Country Should Do

Most college students can only dream of a trip around the world, with tight budgets, harsh timetables, and grueling semesters standing in the gap. Take it from those who have been there before: you can travel the world as a full-time student, and on a limited budget without beating yourself to a pulp.

The benefits of being nomadic as a young, enthusiastic scholar are limitless. You’ll have a front-row seat to new cultural immersions, which widens your perspective before your opinions are fully set. At the same time, you’ll no longer be ignorant (and arrogant in some cases) as you can interact with folks who are of higher or lower privilege.

Travelling can also give you great material to work on for your essays and is a great opportunity to understand your future career through the lens of those who are already practicing. You can learn a foreign language, cross something off your bucket list, therefore, gaining a level of fulfillment, learn to be independent and social, or even meet a future spouse or best friend… the list is endless.

With that said, as a traveling student on a stringent budget and limited time, it is important to plan your itinerary out beforehand to make the most out of every travel experience. Whether you are making a trip to the Taj Mahal, or have a safari in the Kenyan Mara planned out, here are 8 suggestions for things to do on your travels.

  • Learn a bit of the local language

Traveling, whether just across the border or halfway across the world, presents a great opportunity to learn the local language. You don’t have to be an expert at this on the first attempt. However, carrying along a copy of the local dictionary will enable you to put one and two together quickly. If you have the funds to spare, you can hire a local tour guide to interpret for you. A website like FluentU is a great avenue for new language immersion.

Learning the local language will gain you the respect of the locals, and it will be a fun and more cheerful experience. With just a sample of the language, you can start making your way around without having to pay for a guide.

  • Go to a local art or music festival

One of the best ways to interact with hip-and-happening locals and other travelers, and to learn much about local culture and couture is to attend art festivals. It is not only a great way to unwind but is also one of the best ways to purchase cheap artifacts and clothing items, and have an authentic gastronomic experience.

  • Visit as many cultural and historical monuments as you can

Students usually lack interesting topics to write their essays on or to motivate their research. A professional essay writer may do the trick for you, but this won’t be anything compared to the authenticity of work produced from a life-changing visit to a sanctuary of local history. Almost every country has a place of cultural and historical significance. To boost tourism, authorities always give great discounts, especially to visiting students. Therefore, take full advantage of these.

  • Visit one of the local colleges or universities

It can be an eye-opening experience, especially if you can sit in a course similar to yours or visit sites likes, CustomEssayMeister.com. The local school department would probably be happy to have an international student sit in a class or two and share insights. Not only is it some free tuition, but you also get the opportunity to mingle with students on the same career path as you in a completely different environment, and make some new friends.

  • Travel using local transportation means

Transportation around some countries can be horrible. Traffic in Jakarta, New Delhi, Bangkok, and Nairobi can be a mess during peak hours. It’s no traveler’s idea of comfort to be cruising at Mach speeds down a busy highway on the back of a rickety motorcycle or a ‘Tuk-tuk’ in an ambiance of smog and dust. However, it is one of the best ways to feel like a local, and to have truly authentic travel experience, besides saving you lots of cash in taxi fees.

  • Eat local food from a local food market

You don’t always have to eat fancy or at a joint that you are used to, say a Starbucks or KFC. Local food tastes different from what you are used to, and 9 out of 10 times is always more delicious than you anticipated. It’s better to follow recommendations and reviews on trusted travel sites like TripAdvisor, just so that you don’t end up with a case of a stomach bug.

  • If you can, work a part-time job in your desired field

If you absolutely can and have the time, this is one of the best ways to develop professionally. Prior arrangements would have to be made, but employers everywhere are always happy to have a set of foreign eyes on their teams. It will look great on your resume, and you could make a little extra spending cash on the side.

  • Have at least one outdoor camping experience

Every country has a different feel of its atmosphere, its earth, its water, and everything in-between. Take advantage of the great outdoors to feel true immersion, through hiking, camping, backpacking, open traveling, and anything else available. Take lots of photos and make the best memories of your life. Hey, you might even end up starting a travel blog!

LAMB OF GOD Releases First New Music in Five Years, “Checkmate,” from Upcoming Self-Titled Album, Due Out May 8

Watch the Video for “Checkmate” Now via lamb-of-god.com

Pre-Order Lamb Of God at http://lambofgod.lnk.to/LOG

LAMB OF GOD has revealed a brand new single and video, “Checkmate,” from the band’s first release in five years and the first to feature new drummer Art Cruz. The self-titled Lamb Of God is due out May 8 via Epic Records.

Watch “Checkmate” now at: http://lamb-of-god.com.

“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the LAMB OF GOD sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” says guitarist Mark Morton. “Re-energized and reignited, this is LAMB OF GOD 2020. We’ve never been more excited.”

The fact that the band’s eighth studio effort would warrant ‘self-titled’ status is a testament to the band’s pride and satisfaction with these songs and this period in their creativity.

“Putting only our name on it is a statement,” Blythe says. “This is LAMB OF GOD. Here and now.”

A true collaboration between all members of the band, LAMB OF GOD’s eighth studio album is an amalgam of each individual’s contributions, blended to create a singular style. Guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler fuel the album with a mountain of riffs, taking what Lamb of God are known for, and unbelievably, upping the ante to new levels. The rhythm section of John Campbell, looming large as a rhythmic shadow, and drummer Art Cruz, who makes his studio debut with LAMB OF GOD here on this record, underpin the proceedings with passion, sweat and expansive dynamics. Vocalist D. Randall Blythe is as angry, insightful, and informed as ever. Never one to shrink from facing the darker aspects of our nature head-on, Blythe delivers with no punches pulled, and as only he and Lamb of God can in 2020.

In celebration of the release of “Checkmate” and the announce of the new album, LAMB OF GOD will appear at a special show at the House of Vans in Chicago on February 14. The event is free and fans can RSVP beginning at 12 noon CST today at HouseOfVans.com The event will include a photography exhibit featuring photos from D. Randall Blythe that will be included in the new LAMB OF GOD album artwork. Harm’s Way will open the show.

In the midst of writing the ten songs that appear on Lamb Of God, the group hit pause on the works-in-progress to man the stage as main support Slayer’s “The Final Campaign.” After months of playing their best-known songs nightly, LAMB OF GOD returned to the new tracks and began to work with longtime producer Josh Wilbur (Korn, Megadeth, Gojira, Trivium). Special guests Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and Chuck Billy (Testament) also make appearances on Lamb Of God.

The Richmond, Virginia, quintet propelled heavy metal into the new millennium two decades ago with the prophetically titled New American Gospel. They followed with 2003’s As the Palaces Burn, which made the Rolling Stone list of the Top 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. Ashes of the Wake, released in 2004, was the first LAMB OF GOLD album to be certified gold by the RIAA, as was 2006’s Sacrament, which also made a Top 10 Billboard 200 chart debut. In 2009, LAMB OF GOD released Wrath, their first with Wilbur at producer, and earned the number one album spot on Billboard’s Hard Rock, Rock, and Tastemaker charts, with a number two position on the Billboard 200.

Those number one positions were repeated with 2012’s Resolution, which swung effortlessly between thrash, traditional metal, sludgy doom, with flashes of crust punk swagger and bravado. LAMB OF GOD’s last album, VII: Sturm und Drang (2015) made its debut on the Billboard 200 at number three and finished number 2 in the world charts, reaching Top 5 in five countries and six addition Top 15 positions.

In 2020, LAMB OF GOD is re-energized and unrelenting, ready to lay claim to the metal throne.

“GET THE MONEY” ALL-NEW FULL-LENGTH ALBUM FEATURING ALL-STAR ROCK ROYALTY SUPPORTING CAST OUT NOVEMBER 8 ON SHANABELLE/RCA RECORDS

On November 8, Taylor Hawkins will descend from the levitating drum throne on which he’s spent two years on tour supporting Foo Fighters’ international #1 album Concrete and Gold. The forthcoming third Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders album, Get The Money, will be released by Shanabelle/RCA Records on that date, and can be pre-ordered now with all pre-orders receiving the instant grat track “Crossed The Line” (featuring guest turns from Hawkins’ bandmate Dave Grohl and Yes vocalist Jon Davison).

Pre-Order Get The Moneyhere. Listen to “Crossed The Line” here. Exclusive Merch bundles are also be available here.

Produced by John Lousteau and Taylor himself, and mixed by Sylvia Massy, Get The Money follows Taylor’s 2016 six-song mini-LP KOTA by three years almost to the day, and features a scope far wider than KOTA’s takes on suburbia’s bizarro underbelly. The new album finds Taylor and Coattail Riders Chris Chaney, Brent Woods and John Lousteau accompanied by an all-star supporting cast including Taylor’s fellow Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Pat Smear, Roger Taylor, Joe Walsh, Duff McKagan, Nancy Wilson, Chrissie Hynde, Perry Farrell, LeAnn Rimes and more, collectively creating a staggering, epic sprawl that swerves from classic rock to prog and glam and all points between.

The track listing for Get The Money is:

  1. Crossed the Line (featuring Dave Grohl, Jon Davison)
  2. Don’t Look At Me That Way (featuring Duff McKagan, Nancy Wilson)
  3. You’re No Good at Life No More (featuring Dave Grohl)
  4. I Really Blew It (featuring Dave Grohl, Perry Farrell)
  5. Queen Of The Clowns  (featuring Mark King)

  7. C U in Hell (featuring LeAnn Rimes)
  8. Middle Child (featuring Dave Grohl)
  9. Kiss the Ring
  10. Shapes Of Things (featuring Roger Taylor, Pat Smear)

Since the Texas-born Laguna-bred force of nature made his Foo Fighting debut on the tour supporting 1997’s sophomore opus The Colour and the Shape, he has been an essential element of the sound and personality of the last great American arena/stadium rock band.  He’s played on Grammy-winning FF albums including “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” , “One by One” and “Wasting Light”, and contributed lead vocals to Concrete and Gold’s “Sunday Rain,” as well as “Cold Day In The Sun” from 2005’s In Your Honor.

Taylor’s previous extracurricular output includes two albums from Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, one with The Birds of Satan, the above-mentioned KOTA mini-LP that featured Hawkins on lead vocals and nearly every instrument.

8 Films That Get Addiction Right

The surgeon general reports that nearly 15 percent of people struggle with substance abuse or addiction at some point in their lives. Millions live with addiction. Millions know someone whose life has been turned upside down by the problem. However, millions more are unaware of what life is like for an addict. There are some amazing movies that offer accurate depictions of habitual substance abuse. And if you need help about this, call this addiction hotline.

1. The Lost Weekend – 1945

As the story progresses through a four-day weekend, viewers get to see a number of characteristics often displayed by alcoholics. The desperation to drink leads to deception and self-endangerment. Despite the concern and intervention attempts made by loved ones and professionals, the addict wants nothing more than their next fix. We also see the ravaging effects alcohol abuse has on someone who goes without drinking and suffers the horrifying D.T.s.

2. My Name is Bill W – 1989

The film explains the life of William Griffith Wilson who created Alcoholics Anonymous. Wilson and his sister were raised by their grandparents who owned a bar. His grandfather suffered from alcoholism until experiencing a spiritual awakening. Wilson did not have his first drink until he served with the National Guard. When inebriated, Wilson enjoys the freedom alcohol provides from shyness and depression. Eventually, he becomes addicted. However, years of drinking lead to Wernicke’s encephalopathy. At which time, he was given the choice to stop or spend the rest of his life in an institution. After a spiritual experience, he becomes sober. Wilson then endeavored to help others overcome the addiction.

3. Flight – 2012

The film demonstrates how addiction is no respecter of persons. During a flight, commercial pilot Denzel Washington saves the day when a major mechanical malfunction might have caused a horrific tragedy. However, an investigation of the incident reveals that he was under the influence at the time. Viewers follow him behind the scenes to see his addiction to illegal drugs and alcohol play out.

4. Gia – 1998

Gia Marie Carangi was believed by many to be the first supermodel in the United States. Angelina Jolie portrays the troubled young model who fell into cocaine use upon the death of her mentor and agent Wilhelmina Cooper. Depression and loneliness due to a failure to nurture personal relationships lead Gia to heroin use. Although she finally overcomes her addiction, she contracts HIV from using contaminated needles. The disease progresses to AIDS, which claims her life at the age of 26.

5. Trainspotting – 1996

The story follows the antics of a group of young men living in an impoverished area in Edinburgh. For lack of anything better to do, the guys fall into heroin addiction. The need to feed and pay for their habit leads the group to engage in various criminal acts. The dangers of addiction become apparent when one falls to AIDS.

6. Less Than Zero – 1987

A college student comes home for a visit to find his former girlfriend in a relationship with his best friend. Sadly, both are also cocaine addicts. Addiction leaves the student’s friend estranged from his family due to deceptive behavior and theft to support his habit. He is also rendered homeless. The addiction creates an enormous debt to a dealer that leads to violence and prostitution. In an effort to overcome their substance abuse, the couple joins their friend on a journey to the desert. However, the physical damage the drug causes for one results in an untimely death.

7. When a Man Loves a Woman – 1994

A school counselor, wife and mother has an alcohol addiction, which puts her and her children in danger. She agrees to enter rehab, which leaves her commercial pilot husband in charge of the home front. However, as she recovers, the couple struggles to manage their changing roles, which threatens their marriage.

8) Spun – 2002

The tale involves a star-studded cast who portray a methamphetamine ring. Drama infused with dark comedy follows the addicted members as they deal with each other and their habit. The substance abuse leads to confrontations with law enforcement, wild partying and a tragic end for various members of the group.

In 2017, more than 72,000 people in the United States died from a drug overdose. An estimated 10 percent ever seek treatment. As the films portray, substance abuse is often the result of self-medicating to deal with an emotional or mental health issue. Under these circumstances, professional help is necessary to overcome the addiction.

Film Review: “Oceans 8”

OCEAN’S 8

Starring:  Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway

Directed by:  Gary Ross

Rated:  PG 13

Running time:  1 hour 50 mins

Warner Bros

We are introduced to Debbie Ocean (Bullock) as she is being released from prison, having done five years for a crime she claims she didn’t commit (she was set up).  Sadly, we soon learn that Debbie was NOT rehabilitated, as she cons her way into everything from cosmetics to a swanky hotel room.  She also takes the time to stop at her brother Danny’s grave, letting the audience know in the first 10 minutes not to look for that assumed George Clooney cameo.  As soon as she’s settled she begins putting into place a plan that she has been perfecting for three years.  And she only needs seven people to help her.

Slow and plodding at the beginning, with a mostly satisfying conclusion, “Ocean’s 8” boasts an amazing cast of women with their own amazing list of accomplishments,  Between the eight members of the “gang” are four Oscars, two Emmys, eight Grammys, six Golden Globes and five BAFTAs.  Sadly none of them brought them to work with them, as the plot progresses so slowly that seeing one of the ladies flash their trophies might have added some excitement to the proceedings.

In a nutshell, Debbie has decided to steal a $150 million necklace at the annual Met Gala.  She then rounds up a smorgasbord of like-minded associates…everyone from Rhianna’s surveillance expert to Mandy Kaling’s diamond expert.  The actresses are fine in their roles, but, despite attempts to give them some kind of personality, they’re all very similar in delivery and demeanor.  Which makes this film pale against Clooney’s “Ocean” trilogy.  Heck, even the great 60s version with Frank Sinatra was more fun.  The difference is that those films had set characters that did not act the same.  This film could have used the comedy duo of Casey Affleck and Scott Caan or the blustery antics of Bernie Mac.  Gary Ross is a fine director who knows how to keep the action moving, but here his script has conspired against him.
