Prior to reviewing this DVD, I have to admit I was unaware of “I’m Dickens…He’s Fenster”. I was though quite aware of John Astin, Marty Ingels and Lee Meriwether. This DVD marks the 50th Anniversary of 1960s TV sitcom and it is also the first time that these episodes have been released on DVD. The release contains a three-disc set which contains over 10 hours of content. It features the first sixteen episodes of thirty-two from the show’s only season. It is very sad that this show only latest one season because it is a riot. It is simple and subtle but extremely funny. The show is created by Leonard Stern who is responsible for hit comedy shows like “The Honeymooners” and “Sergeant Bilko”. I have to certainly thank Glass Onyon PR for allowing us to find this wonderful gem of a show.  I look forward to sharing this series with my soon-to-be-born daughter. This DVD is highly recommended…simply wonderful.

“I’m Dickens… He’s Fenster” follows Harry (Astin) and Arch (Ingels) and their adventures being best friends and also working together as construction workers.  Ingels easily steals the show and is just such a pleasure to watch. The two are absolutely hilarious and are backed but some amazing guest stars including: Yvonne Craig (Batgirl from “Batman”), Harvey Korman (“The Carol Burnett Show”), Sally Kellerman (“M*A*S*H”), Peter Lupus (“Mission: Impossible”), Lee Meriwether (“The Time Tunnel”), Ellen Burstyn (“The Exorcist”), Edy Williams (“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”), and Jim Nabors (“The Andy Griffith Show”). The series looks great on DVD and the episodes look sharp and really clear for a show that is 50 years old. It is also presented in full frame with 1.33:1 ratio and original mono audio track.

The special features on this DVD release are jam packed. There are all-new interviews including stars John Astin and Marty Ingels, Directors Arthur Hiller, Norman Abbott, and Creator/Producer Leonard Stern. If you are fan of audio commentaries there are bunch feature John Astin and Marty Ingels, Yvonne Craig, Lee Meriwether, Dave Ketchum, Chris Korman (son of Harvey Korman) and creator/producer Leonard Stern. There is a funny featurette called “I’m Dickens…He’s Fenster Get Physical”. There is a very sweet video tribute to the late Leonard Stern. There are three funny featurettes including “The Joke”, “Love Me, Love My Dog” and “How Not to Succeed in Business”. There are old commercials including Bumpers, ABC TV Network Promo and Cast Commercial. Lastly there is a ‘Thank You’ slide show video featuring the dozens of people who helped make the 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition a reality.

“The Looney Tunes Show” continues to entertain with its first season. The characters Bugs, Daffy and their friends never seem sort on jokes and relatability. So far I have seen about half the season and it brings me back to the good ole days “Looney Tunes” days. As much as I enjoy the episodes, I do not enjoy these volume releases as much. Warner Brothers is only releasing four episodes at a time and with 13 episodes to go, we can expect an additional three volumes before we get to complete season one. Though this is a usual release strategy for kids shows, I just wish they would release the season in full. If you enjoy the show though, this is a must purchase.

This volume includes episodes 9-13 from the first season. “The Foghorn Leghorn Story” is a funny “Antiques Roadshow” send up featuring Bugs, Daffy, Foghorn and Yosemite, who all go at it. “Silent but Deadly” is a very funny spoof of kung-fu/superhero films, easily the best on this release. “Eligible Bachelors” features Bugs and Daffy on the auction table. Also included is a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner: “Winter Blunderland”. Bugs falls for Daffy “get rich quick” scheme in “Peel of Fortune;” There are two shorts in this episode: Merrie Melodies: “We Are in Love” with Bugs and Lola Bunny and also a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner: “Heavy Metal”. Daffy tries to date two ladies in one night in “Double Date.” Lastly it is followed by a Merrie Melodies short called: “Be Polite” by Mac and Tosh featuring Marvin the Martian and another CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road runner short: “Wile E. Sisyphus”.

DVD Review “Young Justice: Season One, Volume Three”

Join Robin, Miss Martian, Superboy, Aqualad and Kid Flash on their adventures to fight the bad guys. This DVD comes packed with four episodes from the first season. This release lands in the series between from episode 9 through 12.  There are 26 episodes in season one so expect at least another 4 volumes for this season. The series is really fun and exciting but these episodes have started to get a little more darker and intense. If you are a fan of shows like “Justice League” and “Teen Titans”, this is a good mix of both.

The episodes includes are “Befret”, “Targets”, “Terror”, “Home Front”. “Befret” deals with the team trying to recover their memories after their mission in Bialya. In “Targets” puts the team in between an assassinate plot against Lex Luthor. “Terror” focuses on Superboy and Miss Martian planning to infiltrate Belle Reve. Lastly, “Home Front” brings forward the attack from Red Inferno and Red Torpedo on Mount Justice. Definitely some of the best episodes in the series to date.  I will look forward to see what comes next especially with the cliffhanger it leaves off on.

Volume 3 of “Primeval” includes Series 4 and 5 of the show, rounding up all 13 episodes. This show took a little while to catch on with me but it still manages to entertain with each season. These episodes include some decent special effects and awesome creatures like the Spinosaurus, ancient crocodiles, giant insects, and of course the T-Rex. If you are holding your breath for series 6, you might need to keep waiting since their has been no announcement but there is a spin-off in the works for this year called “Primeval: New World”.

I would love to say that the show looks amazing on Blu-ray but it is only presented at 1080i. It looks ok and it is better than DVD but definitely not up to par for Blu-ray. The sound is also disappointing with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 track included. Lastly if you are looking for special features, don’t look here. Firstly, we get some prequel webisodes, which are ok but nothing special. Lastly there is a featurette called “New Dawn: Making the New Primeval”, a basic EPK but worth a watch on the production. Overall fans of the show will enjoy this, otherwise I would just watch it on Netflix Instant.

Book Review “Firefly: The Official Companion- Volume Two”

This the second volume to the official companion of the cult classic TV series “Firefly”. Titan Books released Volume One in 2006 and it was a wonderful ode to the fans of this show.  The book follows in the first volumes path and continues to deliver “Firefly” to its fans.  It is jam packed with new unseen photos and great behind the scenes materials.

Continuing from the first volume, this contains the second half of an extended interview with Joss Whedon, as well as new exclusive interviews with the cast, writers and crewmembers.  In this volume, there are more full, uncut shooting scripts including “Jaynestown” (one of my favorites), “Out of Gas”, “Ariel”, “War Stories”, “Trash”, “The Message”, “Heart of Gold” and “Objects in Space”.  There are also sections on the shows out-of-the-world production design and visual effects. This is where the show really was way advance in its approach and it is great to see it showcased here.

Joss Whedon has really created one hell of a world surrounding this little show and this book manages to complete the circle.  This show is guaranteed to last many years into the future and until it is recreated in some sense.  This book is definitely a great tribute to the fans of the show and will leave them satisfied until then…or at least until the next volume “Firefly: Still Flying” is released.

Book Review “Firefly: The Official Companion- Volume One”

I have been a fan of the “Firefly” show since it originally briefly aired on Fox back in 2002. So you can imagine that the fact that they have an official companion to one of my favorites shows must be a thrill. Well the book definitely satisfies my “Firefly” lust. The book is jam packed with exclusive interviews with Joss Whedon, cast, writers and crewmembers. This book is definitely perfect for the mega fans aka the ‘Browncoats’.

There are full, uncut shooting scripts for the following episodes “Serenity”, “The Train Job”, “Bushwacked”, “Shindig”, “Safe” and “Our Mrs. Reynolds”. Each shooting script is backed with comments from both the cast and crews. This is something that is priceless if you are a fan of this series. Normally you would think…just shooting scripts? But this book takes that and builds on it to cater to the fans and deliver a great tribute to a great show.

There are many rare and previously unpublished photos from the show, as well as many great behind-the-scenes images. Also showcased in the book is the amazing production art from the show. One of the great parts of the series are their original props and costumes and this book has photos of both of them which have been shot specifically for this book. Fans of the show should definitely purchase this book if you don’t own it already.

DVD Review “Switched at Birth: Volume One”

I have seen the promos for this show and overall I am of fan of ABC Family’s TV programming. The show is enjoyable with some funny and dramatic elements but overall seems lacking a major purpose. This set consists of the first ten episodes from the show’s freshman season. Overall the show might cater more to the female gender or teenagers but not to me personally. There are also no special features on this releases as well, which is a little disappointing.

The series doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to revealing the whole switching at birth, as it happens in the first episode. Once they get it out the way the series really takes form having the two girls meet each others family and even moving in together. The show features the girls struggle with their own identities and prejudices against one another and while also facing everyday teenage drama like dating, friendships, and family.

I really had a problem with actress Vanessa Marano, it wasn’t so much her character but I just thought that she was really annoying. On the complete opposite, I really enjoyed watching Katie Leclerc and thought that she was really sweet. Watching great actresses like Lea Thompson and Constance Marie were highlights of the show. Lucas Grabeel known for his “High School Musical” fame sadly is only secondary character and really could have shined more.

I have been a fan of “The Looney Tunes” ever since I was a kid, who wasn’t right?  This new show expanded the characters into a 30 minute format.  I think it really works and gives brings the “The Looney Tunes” into a new generation.  This is the first season of the new show and it only includes a few episodes but it definitely left me wanted more.  You would recognize a few of your favorite voices like Jeff Bergman, who voices Bugs and Daffy and also Porky Pig’s Bob Bergen.  You will also notice some new voices like Kristen Wiig voicing Lola Bunny.  Overall I look forward to watching the rest of the episodes as this series is definitely grown on me.

This volume includes episodes 5-8 from the first season. “Monster Talent” features Daffy as he tries to prepare Gossamer for a school talent show. Also includes is a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “A Zipline in the Sand”. The episode “Reunion” follows Bugs as he helps Daffy try to better himself before his class reunion. There is also a Merrie Melodies: “Cock of The Walk” with Foghorn Leghorn and another CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Fee Fi Fo Dumb”. “Casa de Calma” features Bugs and Daffy trying to impress a famous actress. Included all is a Merrie Melodies: “Queso Bandito” with Speedy Gonzales and a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Sail Fail”. The last episode included is “Devil Dog” where Bugs tries to turn the Tasmanian Devil into a pet. Also included is a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Unsafe at Any Speed”.

DVD Review “Tom and Jerry: Fur Flying Adventures- Volume 3”

There is always something about the gags, hijinks and mischief of Tom and Jerry.  The unspoken duo have always managed to make me smile and laugh out loud.  The “Fur Flying Adventures” collections are a great have included some of the great episodes and this volume is no exception. The humor of Tom and Jerry is so timeless and can be enjoyable through many generations and will hopefully live on for many many years to come.

The 14 episodes included are “Ah, Sweet Mouse-Story of Life”, “Bad Say at Cat Rock”, Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary, “Beach Bully Bingo”, “A Life Less Guarded”, “Northern Light Fish”, “Doggone Hill Dog”, “Love Me, Love My Mouse”, “Sasquahed”, “Shutter Bugged Cat”, “Snow Mouse”, “The Unshrinkable Mouse”, “Spook House Mouse”, and “Don’t Bring Your Pet to School Day”.  All of the episodes are great.  There is a mix of the old classics and some new updated ones as well.  Overall it is a great collection.

Synopsis: Take one blue and white domestic cat. Add one small brown house mouse. Mix in a handful of chases, stir in a few falling anvils and top off with one brutish bulldog named Spike. Yields 14 delightful cartoons! This fast and funny collection rises to the occasion with a crazy camping trip (Sasquashed), a chase through a carnival?s haunted house (Spook House Mouse), an Alaskan adventure (Northern Light Fish Fight) and an encounter with an abominable snow rodent (Snow Mouse).  But the most outrageous moment of all comes when Tom and Jerry set aside their differences and join forces against beach muscleheads Spike and Butch in Beach Bully Bingo. If you are looking to compare the best slot sites, you can have some endless fun as the main course served up in this new all-family feast of animated fun.

Anything with anything related to Batman or Superman, or DC comics in general…count me in. I loved “Teen Titans” and this show reminds me so much of it. It is a little less slapstick and instead packs some great action. This DVD comes packed with four episodes from the first season. The DVD lands in the series between from episode 5 through 8. Overall this series is really fun and exciting. Since watching these four episodes, I have setup a season pass for the rest of season one, which is currently airing on Cartoon Network.

The episodes includes are “Schooled”, “Infiltrator”, “Denial”, “Downtime”. “Schooled” is centered around Super Boy and his relationship with Superman. He goes off on his own. The team faces Professor Ivo’s Amazo. In “Infiltrator” focuses on Artemis as she prove herself to the team while protecting Dr. Roquette from the League of Shadows. “Denial” is when the team is sent by Red Tornado to the Tower of Fate to prevent the helmet of Doctor Fate from getting in the wrong hands. “Downtime” focuses on Aqualad and his travels home to Atlantis after he gets blamed for letting the rest of Young Justice get taken down in battle.

Synopsis: Animated DC Universe cartoon series for a new generation starring ROBIN, AQUALAD, KID FLASH, SUPERBOY, MISS MARTIAN and ARTEMIS . Combined these six teenage heroes are YOUNG JUSTICE the JUSTICE LEAGUE?s secret weapon against the forces of evil. Cartoon Network’s “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” is actually the eleventh adaption of the Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo series and it also stands as a reboot for the franchise. I have always been a fan of this series since it mixes horror themes with mystery and comedy. What I like most about this show is that each episode ends in a cliffhanger and makes you want to watch the next  one.  I watch quite a bit of animation and this series stand out as clever and also funny.  If you remember the live action films, Matthew Lillard reprises his role of Shaggy.  Other notable voice cast includes Gary Cole, Patrick Warburton and Lewis Black.

The episodes includes in this set are episode 9 through 12.  In “Battle of the Humungonauts”, focuses on a sibling rivalry that rises to monstrous heights.  “Howl of the Fright Hound” follows a robot dog tries to literally tear the gang apart. “The Secret Serum” is about a vampire who has a thirst for a beauty formula wants to sink her fangs into the kinds.  “The Shrieking Madness” releases a creature who comes alive from the cover of a science-fiction book. What I like about this series is that each episode are intertwined with some aspect from its prior episode.  I wish this release would have had more episodes in this volume.  This season includes 26 episodes and I look forward to future volumes.  Unfortunately there are no special features on this disc.

Synopsis:  The adventures of a talking dog and his four human pals as they try to unravel the strange and haunted history of their hometown. The tone is comedic, but it will never lose the edge that our heroes are in some frightening situations. The stakes are real.

The second volume of this two-volume set from horror master Romero consists of an anthology of three 30-minute nail-biting horror films from writer Jeff Monahan (Lone Star), who also directs alongside Michael Fischa, Matt Walsh and Marty Schiff.

George A. Romero, writer-director of the famed NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, has created this horror anthology containing the following three short horror films:

· THE GORGE: Three best friends go hiking on a fun morning expedition when a sudden avalanche leaves them trapped in a cave with no way out. Now imprisoned in a living nightmare, how long can the three survive before they begin to turn on each other?

· ON SABBATH HILL: A chilling tale about a handsome playboy professor who is a stickler for student attendance. When his wandering affections cause a female admirer to commit suicide, his stern attendance rules come back to haunt him. Literally.

· DUST: When a scientist at a high-tech space lab discovers dust from the planet Mars might have the ability to cure cancer, a security guard steals a sample for his terminally ill wife. What at first appears to be a miracle cure turns into an unimaginable horror.

DVD Review “George A. Romero Presents Deadtime Stories- Volume 2”

If you read my review for Volume 1 of this release then you would know that 2.5/5 is a RAVING review compared. I still am confused as to why George A. Romero decided to put his name on these films since they are not B movies and are lower than even Syfy originals (which I LOVE BTW). The acting and production value are so weak overall. Luckily the first two films in this series are good and really gory. The last one is lame but watchable.

The first film is called “THE GORGE”. It is about three best friends that go hiking but an avalanche trapped in a cave and resort to cannibalism. The second is called “ON SABBATH HILL” about a professor relationship with his student causes her to commit suicide, but still comes to class to haunt him. The last one is my least favorite “DUST” about a scientist that discovers dust from Mars that the ability to cure cancer but a security guard steals it for terminally ill wife and of course things go array.

Luckily this collection of horror films does not skimp on the gore. It is actually pretty intense especially in the first film. Since this is a zero budget project even though it shows it this is a major improvement from Volume 1’s films which I could barely even finish. Overall worth a watch but definitely not “Tales from the Crypt” quality.

DVD Review “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy- Volume 1”

Something about Larry the Cable Guy is like a car accident…you can’t look away. No matter how corny or stupid he may be, he is damn entertaining. This show is funny and is also very informative. In the series, Larry travels America as he experiences different lifestyles, jobs and hobbies. that occur “only in America”. It is sort of like “Dirty Jobs” except the hillbilly version. I really enjoyed this series and Larry the Cable Guy is a good show host.

Here is just some of the things that Larry does on this season…Larry Makes Moonshine, Larry Goes to the Swamp, Larry Shoots Guns/Larry Gets the Horns, Larry Breeds Mules, Larry Races Dogs, Larry Gits a Gator, Larry Goes Trucking, Larry Is an Astronaut, Larry Rides with the Hells Angels and Larry Deep Fries Everything.

Larry seems to make fun of all these different lifestyles, jobs or hobbies but he does really seem to enjoy them overall. What I like about this volume of episodes the most is that there are no commercials, opening or ending credits. What this means is each disc, for a total of two, is just one 2 hour and 51 minute episode. It is work well when re-watching the series and make it feel like you are watching less and just keep watching.  I look forward to volume two of this season and hopefully season two.

DVD Review “Beyblade: Metal Fusion – Volume 4”

“Beyblade” might be a little out of my age range when it comes to TV shows. I do not have kids yet but I do know how popular the “Beyblade” series is. It was not hard to catch up with this show prior to watching this DVD volume. This first series of “Beyblade: Metal Fusion” consists of 51 episodes, so volume 4 consists of episodes 22-28. Following this series, there is “Beyblade: Metal Masters”, and then Metal Fight Beyblade 4D”, each consists of 51 episodes each as well. I enjoyed this episodes overall.

The following episodes included are “The Fearsome Libra”, which show Ginga, Kyouya, Yu and Madoka are the final four left in the surival battle. “The Road to the Battle Bladers” follow Yu after he won the battle reveals he’s a member of the Dark Nebula. “The Beautiful Eagle” follows the meet of Tsubasa and how he has many secrets. “The Sniper Capricorn” has Kyouya going against Tobio, aka Captain Capri. “Tsubasa Flies Into The Dark” follows Tsubasa as he attempts to join Dark Nebula. “Intruders in the Challenge Match” features Kenta battling in the forest stadium and Hyoma battling in the river stadium. “Dark Gasher’s Big, Crabby-Crabby Operation” is the last episode on the disc and features Tetsuya as he follows Yu back to the Dark Nebula Headquarters.

Besides the episodes, their are no extras but kids will enjoy the fact that this DVD set includes an exclusive code unlocking special features, including the ability to battle other Beybladers on Beybladebattles.com.
