Selene Luna chats about her career and working with Margaret Cho

Selene Luna has appeared in variety of television series and movies such as “The Cho Show” and 2010’s “My Bloody Valentine”. Media Mikes had the chance to talk with Selene about her career and what she is currently working on.

Adam Lawton: What made you decide to go into show business?
Selene Luna: I have a very specific answer for that. Being the only little person in my entire family I didn’t grow up around anyone else that was like me. For that reason I always understood that I would be stared at and or treated differently. By the age of 5 I decided I would be an entertainer. I just thought that it would be a good platform for people to stare at me on my terms. I figured I would give them something to look at. Everything kind of snow balled from me having that attitude.

AL: Being involved in both standup comedy and acting is there one type of performance that has been more of a challenge than the other?
SL: I will do whatever I can get my hands on. To be honest it’s all equally challenging. As far as gratification goes I get the most gratification from performing live on stage. I love theater and live performance. That is my number one passion. Both types of performance are challenging and require tenacity and leather skin.

AL: Do you ever find it hard to get people to break out of the idea that you can only play certain roles because of your stature?
SL: That is probably my greatest challenge. It is something that has always been there and will probably never go away. That is something that attracted me to being a standup comic. I feel likethat is the only place where I have control of the material and I can do what I want. I am able to give whatever impression I want to give. As far as scripted television or films go that is just not an option for me. The only person I can think of that has been able to break through this type of thing is Peter Dinklage. He is one in a million. Just to be clear my philosophy or take on this type of thing is that Hollywood equally discriminates against everyone. I don’t think little people are special in this department. Transgendered and or gay individuals are often discriminated against as well. You never see a film where the next door neighbor or someone just happens to be bull dyke. That is something you just don’t see. Everyone gets it at a certain level. Someone like me might get it a little more amplified but its show business. We are all equally warned. I think it happens to everyone and it’s brutal. You really have to be into it. It’s also really important I think for performers to create their own material regardless of what they want to do in life.

AL: You have appeared in a number of horror films. Is this a genre you are a fan of?
SL: I love horror. I am a big chicken but I love to get scared. It’s fun for me. From the work I have done horror movie sets are hands down the most fun to work on. If a horror offer comes along I take it and run with it. It’s like being a little kid and it’s a lot of fun. You get to scare people and play around. It’s hilarious! I have never seen a death scene where the entire crew is not fighting to crack up. It’s just so ridiculous. Horror has also been the only genre that will embrace someone like me. The casting for these types of films is more about the freaky and unusual. Call it what you will but it gives me opportunities that I would not have otherwise.

AL: Can you tell us about your role in “Girls Will Be Girls”?
SL: The people involved in that show are friends of mine and they have been doing it for awhile. I happened to be visiting a friend who owns the studio where the show was being shot. I was walking by and one of the producers pulled me aside and said I would be a perfect fit for a role they were looking to cast. I love everyone involved and it was a lot fun. I got to play an 8 year old kid who is kind of like the neighborhood brat. She lives next door to one of the main characters who I harass to the point of them kidnapping me. It’s super funny.

AL: You have worked with Margaret Cho quite a bit in your career. How did you two start working together?
SL: We have known each other for quite a long time now. We first met through a mutual friend at one of Margaret’s birthday parties. I had gone as this friends date and that’s wherewe met for the first time. We bonded from there. I had actually already known Margaret’s husband through the art and burlesque scene. I had been doing burlesque for many years by this point. Sometimes Margaret and her husband would come to the shows and participate. We have a lot of mutual friends and it was just a matter of time before our worlds collided. The first work I did with her was the off Broadway burlesque show that Margaret put together. We ended up touring with that show and we really bonded during that time.

AL: Do you have any other projects in the works?
SL: Starting in May I will be doing a tour with Dita Von Teese. I have toured with her before but we will be starting out by doing some west coast shows and we will be announcing more dates as the tour progresses. I am very excited about this. The burlesque world is really where I learned my chops. It is still a great passion of mine and I have a lot of fun doing that. I will also be doing some more stand-up dates with Margaret.

Film Review “Battleship”

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson
Directed by: Peter Berg
PG 13
Running time: 2 hrs 21 mins
Universal

Our Score: 2 out of 5 stars

“H-7. Hit. B-7. Miss. H-8. Hit. You sunk my Battleship!”

If you grew up in the 1970s you remember the television commercial about the two old men playing “Battleship” while attending the opera. I certainly played it enough in my time (though I will admit here that I often cheated, stating “Miss” when in reality my mine sweeper should have been heading to the bottom of the ocean). Now, from Hasbro, the toy company that gave you such films as “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” (as well as their sequels), comes “Battleship.”

2005. A planet almost identical in location from its sun as Earth is discovered in a far away galaxy. Hoping to learn more about it, our government builds a transmission station and the next year sends a radio beacon into space, hoping to reach the planet. The project is called, simply, the Beacon Project. As the beam heads skyward, we are introduced to Alex Hopper (Kitsch), a slacker in every sense of the word. Alex currently lives on the couch in the home owned by his brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), a commander in the U.S. Navy. Another of his apparently frequent run-ins with the law cause Stone to lay the law down, demanding Alex make something of his life by joining him in the Navy. Aye-aye, sir!

Over the top in every way, “Battleship” is two-plus hours of explosions in what is really a mash-up of “Independence Day,” “Transformers,” “Signs” and “Power Rangers.” But, not necessarily in a good way. The film starts off promisingly, with Alex going above and beyond to obtain a snack for the pretty daughter (Decker) of a Navy admiral (Neeson). But then things begin to unravel. In what seems like a day (no transitional scenes) Alex is now a naval officer stationed in Hawaii. He is also part of a soccer team that plays the sailors of the Japanese navy who are visiting Pearl Harbor to take part in a training exercise and attend a dedication to the battleship U.S.S. Missouri. Good point? I’m going to say “no.” Because I know that if I were a naval veteran at Pearl Harbor the last thing I want to see is the Japanese navy! Anyway, during the game Alex gets in an altercation with a Japanese player. Apparently that’s a bad thing because, as Alex heads out to sea on his training exercise he’s informed that “JAG” is probably going to kick him out of the Navy. Really? Without a trial? Is Alex in the RUSSIAN navy?

On the slight “plus” side of the film, the special effects are first rate though, like “Transformers 2,” they are eventually almost a blur because of the films’ dependence on them. The cast does its best with what it was given. Kitsch is a likable actor who’s two biggest roles (here and this past spring entry “John Carter”) have pitted him against special effects. He needs to find a role that lets him achieve the performances he reached on “Friday Night Lights.” And hopefully avoid his agent’s phone call when the ultimate Hasbro movie, “Lincoln Logs vs Tinkertoys,” is being cast!

Joey La Rocca talks about new single with The Briggs

Joey La Rocca is a solo artist as well as the lead singer for the punk rock band The Briggs. After a 2 year hiatus The Briggs have released a new single titled “Panic!”. Media Mikes recently spoke with Joey about the song and the bands plans for the future.

Adam Lawton: What can you tell us about the bands newest song “Panic!”?
Joey LaRocca: I feel right now I am inspired by music that has urgency to it. Lately I like the feeling of uneasiness in music. That I guess might be the way I feel a lot of the time. This was sort of the inspiration behind the song.  The animosity and un-comfortableness is sort of what makes me feel alive and shows me that I am alive. I embrace that feeling of anguish and pain at times.

AL: Can you tell us about the video plans for the song?
JB: The video was really fun. Our buddy Beau Coulon who directed the video is brilliant. He had a concept for the video that has somewhat of a narrative that follows the story line of the song but at the same time it has a lot of energetic shots of the band. We spent a day on a sound stage just banging out the song 20,000 times. I think those shot are probably some of my favorite parts. I feel they really embrace the energy of the song and give it its fury. The narrative is fun also because it gives people something else to look at other than the band. (Laughs)

AL: Now that the band is back after a couple year hiatus what has been the biggest change in the industry you have noticed since your return?
JB: As a band we hadn’t been doing much however a few of us have still been involved in theindustry. I have been working on a solo project under the name Joey Briggs and have also done some touring. I have seen a lot of interesting changes. When we were first got out of doing the Briggs for awhile I was very bitter about how things were. I don’t necessarily feel that way anymore though. I see that there is an amazing breed of bands and fans that are creating a real scene again. It maybe sounds cliché but I have seen all these bands that are doing house and basement shows. In some degree that never went away but there just weren’t the people to support it. I feel now there is a good amount of people embracing the whole world of DIY. There are a lot of cool bands and houses involved in this movement. We haven’t done something like this in a long time. The scene has come back around and people have decided not to pay the high prices a lot of venues charge. There are other options to get people out and interested in what you are doing.

AL: Has there been any talks of a full-length Briggs release?

JB: I think the plan is to definitely do a full-length release. It’s something that sort of has to happen. We weren’t really 100% sure what was happening at the time we started. We were honestly just flying by the seat of our pants. We created a song and then put it out but now there is that expectation. People are going to hear the song and want to know where the rest of the album is. Its cool people want that so we will have to fill our obligations. It’s really fun to write a song but it not as fulfilling as a musician as when you have an entire album. I want 12 songs with 12 different stories and emotions. One song isn’t quite enough.

AL: What are your spring/summer tour plans?
JB: As far as summer goes I am completely booked doing Joey Briggs stuff. I will be doing a few dates on Warped Tour this summer. They are going to be doing an acoustic stage this year and I am really stoked to be a part of that. I then have a month long tour of Europe. When I come back from that I will be back on Warped Tour for a few more shows. The Briggs will be doing a return show at the House of Blues in Anaheim at the end of May to kind of say were back. Before the Briggs get fully back out there I would like to have a new album out. I don’t want to get the cart before the horse so to speak.

CD Review: Foreigner “Alive & Rockin'”

Foreigner
Alive & Rockin’
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Release Date: May 29, 2012
Tracks: 9

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

I would like to consider myself a huge Foreigner fan. I recently saw them perform this past Spring and SeaWorld Orlando and they put on a hell of a live show.
This album was recorded at the 2006 Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen, Germany. This 9-track concert was released previously on DVD but never as an audio CD. I feel that it is definitely missing the energy of the live show. The instruments seems a little bit toned down or muted during the songs. I still have a few original Foreigner albums on my iPhone and I re-listened to those track (of course a different singer), they just sound so much more energetic.

The line up for the concert includes Mick Jones (guitars), Kelly Hansen (vocals), Jason Bonham (drums), Jeff Jacobs (keyboards), Tom Gimbel (guitars, saxophone, flute) and Jeff Pilson (bass). Let me tell you after seeing Kelly Hansen perform live this year, I totally love this voice and he is able to belt out these songs well. This release though didn’t really show that wonderful aspect.

The set list, of course includes the classic crowd-pleasing tracks including U.S. Top 20 hits like “Juke Box Hero”, “Cold As Ice” and “Hot Blooded.” There is even a little tribute to Zeppelin with “Whole Lotta Love”. I have never been a mega big fan of “Starrider and I feel it slows down the album a bit as well. Overall if you are a fan of Foreigner, I would honestly say skip this album, re-listen to your classic vinyls or CD’s and catch these guys live.

Track Listing:
1) Double Vision
2) Head Games
3) Dirty White Boy
4) Cold As Ice
5) Starrider
6) Feels Like The First Time
7) Urgent
8) Juke Box Hero / Whole Lotta Love
9) Hot Blooded

Blu-ray Review “Miramax Double Feature: Equilibrium / Renaissance”

Directed by: Kurt Wimmer, Christian Volckman
Starring: Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Daniel Craig
MPAA Rating: R
Distributed by: Echo Bridge Entertainment
Release Date: April 3, 2012
Running Time: 213 minutes

Equilibrium: 4 out of 5 stars
Renaissance: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I saw “Equilibrium” in the theaters and couldn’t get enough of this film once it hit DVD. I was very excited to see that Echo Bridge was releasing this film on Blu-ray. Now, they released this “Equilibrium” last year to a horrible release. They have made changes to this release to improve the Blu-ray experience overall. The second film on this double feature is “Renaissance”, which I have never seen prior to this release. I have heard of it just never saw it. I feel it is a great companion to “Equilibrium” and is all around a very intriguing and fun movie.

I am a huge sci-fi fan and I am happy get a chance to check out they really cool and imaginative titles on Blu-ray. In “Equilibrium”, it focuses on the best cop aka enforcer in a futuristic society, who soon realizes that things are not as they seem and makes a stand about the ‘man’. In “Renaissance”, we follow a cop that is drawn into the twisted underworld of 2054 corporate espionage. It is very film noir-ish and visually amazing.

Both films are presented in 1080p using the AVC MPEG-4 encode and are presented in their proper 2.35:1 aspect ratios (unlike last year’s release for “Equilibrium”). The audio on both the films are also very impressive with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. The only downfall, and really no biggie to me, is that “Renaissance” does not include its native French track, only the dub featuring Daniel Craig. Also like most Echo Bridge releases there is no bonus features on this release but overall big improvement and a fun double feature Blu-ray release.

Blu-ray Review “Miramax Triple Feature: eXistenZ / Malevolent / B. Monkey”

Directed by: David Cronenberg, John Terlesky, Michael Radford
Starring: Jude Law, Lou Diamond Phillips, Asia Argento
MPAA Ratings: R
Distributed by: Echo Bridge Entertainment
DVD Release Date: May 1, 2012
Running Time: 284 minutes

eXistenZ: 4 out of 5 stars
Malevolent: 2 out of 5 stars
B. Monkey: 3 out of 5 stars

Honestly this triple feature Blu-ray is worth it just alone for the purchase of Cronenberg’s gem “eXistenZ”. This film has never been released on Blu-ray before and this is the first time it has been available. I saw this film in theaters back in 1999 and it instantly becoming a favorite of mine.  If you are wondering why I gave this film 4 out of 5 stars, that is since the film says it is full 1080p but only registers 1080i and only comes with a Dolby Digital 2.0 track.  Now I am not even really complaining but the film does sound and look great on Blu-ray.

Now let’s get to the other films on this release.  I really do not see how “eXistenZ” fits in since it is not really an action movie, per say.  I love me some Lou Diamond Phillips but “Malevolent” just screams B-movie action and really doesn’t rise about that.  It does come with a 5.1 DTS audio track though, which was impressive and best on the entire disc.  “B. Monkey” stars the beautiful Asia Argento, who I can watch in honestly anything.  I saw this film many years ago and it has held up overtime.  It is still nothing to knock your sock off with but it is decent action and she kicks ass, as usual.

“eXistenz” directed by David Cronenberg, stars Jennifer Jason Leigh & Jude Law. It also has appearances from Ian Holm and Willem Dafoe. Leigh plays game designer Allegra Geller, who is responsible for the new groundbreaking virutal game system called “eXistenZ”. While on the run with Ted Pikul (Jude Law) to avoid being assassinated, they take the game for a test drive and become immersed in a dangerous alternate reality.

“Malevolent” stars both Lou Diamond Phillips and Kari Wuhrer. Jack (Phillips) is a cop who is trying to clear his name. After passing out in a bar bathroom and wakes up being framed for murder that he didn’t committ. It is up to him to clear his name and find the person responsible. Oh and Kari Wurher plays stripper (big stretch).

“B. Monkey” was originally released to cash in on the Asia Argento’s role in “XXX”. She plays a thief named B who is trying to get out of the business. While trying to kick her addiction to crime, she finds love with a school teacher. Then her past comes back to haunt her.

Echo Bridge is known for releasing Miramax’s films on Blu-ray, some in combo packs like this one and some solo.  This is obviously not the best Blu-ray that I own but I was just happy enough to see “eXistenZ” get a semi-HD treatment.  I also have to note that each film has zero special features.  There is virtually no room anyway since all three films are crammed on to one Blu-ray 50GB disc.  I hope that Echo Bridge is planning a solo release for “eXistenZ” in the near future and hoping they tack on some extras and fix the audio and video issues.  But for now I recommend snagging this release to add to your collection.

Blu-ray Review “Mutant Girls Squad”

Directed by: Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Tak Sakaguchi
Starring: Yoshihiro Nishimura, Asami, Naoto Takenaka
Distributed by: Well Go USA
Release Date: May 22, 2012
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 89 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

When some combine the directors of three of the coolest Japanese action-horror-comedy films you are destine for greatness. Noboru Iguchi is known best for the amazing “The Machine Girl”, Yoshihiro Nishimura is known for “Tokyo Gore Police” and Tak Sakaguchi has done “Yoroi: Samurai Zombie”. If you have never seen these three films and you are a horror fan…what is wrong with you? This film is funny, sooo over-the-top and just a riot to watch. I mean come-on a girl whose mutant power is to spawn a chainsaw out of her ass?! Or ninjas with guns for noses?! Does it get any better that that?

The film focuses on the character Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) and her realization that she is an Hiruko, a race of mutant creatures whose can transform their bodies transform and form strange weapons at will. Rin meet up with five other genetically-advanced girls who team up and use their mutant powers in order to defeat an evil prime minister.

The Blu-ray presentation on this film but look and sounds great. There is a lot of action and gore in the film and it is showcased very well. This release also comes with a DVD disc of the film along with the Blu-ray. I was impressed that there was also only a Japanese audio track, no dub. The special features are decent and include two behind-the-scenes featurettes. The first is called “Opening Day”, which focuses on a screening for the film. The second is called “The Making of Mutant Girls Squad”, short but sweet. There is also interviews with filmmakers, obviously which are subtitled, worth checking out for sure. Lastly there is a short film “Yoshi Zero”, which is a prequel to this film. Super cool!

3D Blu-ray Review “3D Safari: Africa”

Starring: Hunter Ellis
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Level 33 Entertainment
Release Date: September 20, 2011
Running Time: 90 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

“3D Safari: Africa” really takes you deep into the safari and makes you not want to leave. The film is visually amazing and allows us as viewers to experience the beautiful and exotic Africa in 3D. I really enjoyed that the film was hosted by Emmy award winning, Hunter Ellis. I am not sure what it is but I just love watching films about animals and beautiful landscapes. I always find that with these types of adventure documentaries that I always learn something as well. So sit back and get ready to enjoy a very entertaining 90-minute journey.

“3D Safari: Africa” has got it all from hot air balloon rides to a wildebeest stampede to a zebra up again a crocodile to a mother cheetah searching for her lost cub. The film has emotion and is action packed. Who doesn’t love to watch animals up-close-and-personal in 3D, including lions, leopards, hippos, hyenas, zebras, giraffes and many more.

I have seen many 3D Blu-rays. This one looks sharp in 3D but its overall video quality is decent. The audio is enjoyable though boasting a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. If you are looking for extras on this disc, you might also be disappointed. There is only one short extra included, a short 3D film called “Living Large: Hippos and Rhinos”.

3D Blu-ray Review “Jillian’s Travels: Africa”

Directed by: Craig Tanner
Starring: Taylor Hender, Garrett Ryan
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Level 33 Entertainment
Release Date: April 10, 2012
Running Time: 60 minutes

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

When it comes to education in 3D, I am not going to say no. Africa is a very common subject for this format. Unfortunately, this film would have been a lot more entertaining with the annoying Jillian and her adventures. I know this was aimed at kiddies but I couldn’t even go to that level. The girl was such a snot brat and did not appeal at all. Also the actually safari scenes were ok since she was nowhere to be found besides narrating. If you want to see a cool 3D feature on the Africa check out “3D Safari Africa”.

The film focuses on Jillian Palmer and her brother, Jack as they take a trip with their parents to an African safari. The narrative is told through (annoying) video diaries discussing there journey and trying to educate.   The biggest annual migration of mammals in the world is featured in this which was shot from a hot air balloon while over the Savannah.  Since this is a 3D film, there is focus on cool shots of lions, leopards, hippos, hyenas, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, vultures, gazelles, flamingos and many more.

Jillian’s Travels: Africa deliver a generally great 3D presentation. It’s video is sharp and looks bright and vibrant. The sound goes well with its Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, if you can get over Jillian’s annoying voice. The special features are lacking much like the film. There is only one real extra included, which is an short bonus film called “Elephants 3D”. Lastly there is a 3D trailer for “Jillian’s Travels” and More From Level 33 Entertainment.

CD Review: Deep Purple “Total Abandon: Australia ‘99”

Deep Purple
“Total Abandon: Australia ‘99”
Eagle Rock Entertainment
Tracks: 12
Running Time: 73 minutes

Our Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I doubt I’d still be playing guitar if it wasn’t for “Smoke On the Water”.

As a young kid, I expected to pick up a Stratocaster and immediately rock. It didn’t work out that way, though, as my hands didn’t seem to want to merge with the singles in my mental jukebox.

But then Ritchie Blackmore came to my rescue. Armed with the four distinctive power chords that comprise the first 10 seconds of “Smoke on the Water”, I suddenly became the rock deity that I had dreamed of being. I went from being the kid who regularly got beaten up for his lunch money to being an absolute bad-ass that nobody would dare fuck with. The power of “Bom-bommm-bommmmm. Bom-bommm-b-bommmmm. Bom-bommm-bommmm-bom-b-bommmmm” would defeat all.

It’s very clear on “Total Abandon: Australia ‘99”, that Deep Purple knows full well that they created one of rock’s most sacred sonic icons that probably – along with the Ramones – launched hordes of dreamy youth into being legends in their own minds. Before “Smokin’” the Aussie crowd, guitarist Steve Morse – the fourth guitarist in the group’s history – takes them on an aural tour of some of the most well-known riffs in rock history (from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, the Beatles and the Kinks). And then, after a pregnant pause, he and the rest of the band – including lifer Ian Paice and long-time members Ian Gillan on vocals and bassist Roger Glover – deliver the chords. Indeed, rock and roll’s mothership has arrived to give us all some Close Encounters of the Violet Kind.

The rest of the disc – which is essentially a truncated one-disc edition of a 2CD set that was released in late 1999 that included the entire 116-minute live show – proves that Deep Purple is timeless. Despite the fact that they’d been going for a full 31 years prior to the performance this disc documents, they’d never been trapped by the flash-in-the-pan styles that would claim the musical souls of so many of hard rock’s greatest bands. While bands like Van Halen used the mid-80’s went to the dark side and dabbled with synthesizers and other trendy instrumentation, a reunited Deep Purple delivered some of the most hard-hitting songs of their career – ones that would simply refuse to age.

The only problem with “Total Abandon” is the absence of Ritchie Blackmore’s unique style that, despite its raw and sometimes fumbly nature, was always comprised of rapid-fire notes that pierced like daggers. Guitar wizard Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs joined Purple in 1994 shortly after Blackmore’s departure in 1993. While he definitely has the skills to pay the bills, he often exhibits too much pyrotechnic flash that’s saturated with blisteringly fast hammer-ons and ridiculous bends. It’s impressive fretwork to be sure but 18 years later it sounds rather dated and ready to be filed under “chronic guitar masturbators of 80’s and 90’s” with the likes of Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Despite Morse’s antics, “Total Abandon” shows that Purple could still bash out the goods more than three decades into their career. For 73 solid minutes, we get to explore the violet vaults and enjoy one of the best hard rock bands that the genre has ever spawned.

Chris Rene talks about his music and performing on “The X-Factor”

Chris Rene performed on season one of Simon Cowell’s television show “The X Factor”. Rene’s single “Young Homie” received almost 1 million hits within 10 days after its release via vevo.com. Media Mikes had a chance to talk with Chris about the show and the success of the single.

Adam Lawton: What made you want to try out for the “The X Factor”?
Chris Rene: After people heard me sing they often would ask why my music was not on the radio. I got asked all sorts of questions. A lot of questions would be about going on “American Idol”. I didn’t think that show was for me. Last year I finally decided to give it a shot as I had nothing really to lose.

I got to Los Angeles at 4am on the day of the audition and then waited in line for between 10 and 12 hours. I sang in front of one judge and got through. I then had to
three more judges after which they said they would call me in a few months. When they finally called me with a yes is when I got to go to Seattle. The process is much bigger than is shown sing in front of on television.

AL: What were your first thoughts when you got to Seattle?
CR: I was really excited to have the opportunity. When I got on the stage I knew this was a onetime chance that I needed to give my all.

AL: What has been your take on the success of the video “Young Homie”?
CR: It is just motivation for me to do better and get more and more fans. It makes me want to continue to do what I love.

AL: What made you choose this song to release first?
CR: I have been doing music since I was twelve. By the time I was fifteen my band and I had put out 5 CD’s. In 2009 I put out my first solo CD. I have been writing songs for a long time and “Young Homie” is a song that I think is universal. A lot of people can connect with it. The song is about overcoming struggle.

AL: What has been your favorite part of your success so far?
CR: I have enjoyed going to the different radio stations and meeting people. It’s been great seeing different cities. Recording has probably been the best part.

AL: What are your upcoming plans?
CR: We are going to be doing an EP release and then I have some shows scheduled for the summertime. We also are looking at doing a full tour. I also have something clothing that will be coming out soon and, I am looking to do a cameo in an upcoming film as well.

Film: 3 out of 5 stars

With a title like “Nazis at the Center of the Earth”, how can you obviously not be attracted to this film. Throw in zombie Nazis and a robot Hitler and you are in for a real treat. The Asylum is known for these low-budget gems. This film is made with a smirky grin and is one hell of a great time. The special effects are not bad for a film made for under $500K and do I need to repeat there is a robot Hitler in this film. If that doesn’t make you laugh and drawn to this film then this is not for you obviously.

The film follows a group of researchers in Antarctica who fall through the center of the earth and are abducted by a platoon of gas-masked Nazi soldiers. They find that in this hidden continent in the center of the Earth, they discover that Josef Mengele and group of surviving Nazi soldiers are plotting the return of Hitler using advance technology.  They are also planning the invasion of Earth in a UFO spaceship in order to create a Fourth Reich. Sounds fun right?

The Blu-ray looks and sounds great for this low-budget film. The 1080p transfer looks sharp, clear and works well with the film’s visual effects and action scenes. The audio works well with its Dolby Digital 5.1 track and rocks it with the action scenes. I commend Asylum for continuously releasing their films on Blu-ray and really embracing the format even though the film’s are low-budget.

The special features are also decent like the film. There is an audio commentary from Joseph Lawson. It is very entertaining and a real treat. Must listen for fans of the film. There is a brief featurette about the film’s Pre-Production featuring cast and crew interviews. There is a another feature called “Cast & Locations” which focuses on the shooting locations. There is a featurette on the film’s Production looking into the special effects used in the film. Lastly there is a funny Gag Reel and additional trailers for titles from The Asylum.

DVD Review “Metal Tornado”

Directed by: Gordon Yang
Starring: Lou Diamond Phillips, Nicole de Boer, Greg Evigan, Sophie Gendron, John Maclaren, Alexis Maitland
Distributed by: Arc Entertainment
MPAA Rating: PG
Running Time: 91 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 0 out of 5 stars

I am a total sucker for any film about tornadoes. You throw in a metal tornado…even better. Top it off with Lou Diamond Phillips and Greg Evigan and you’ve got a winner. This film obviously screams low-budget cheesy horror but it is fun, entertaining and packs some decent special effects. Lou Diamond Phillips definitely is the main draw to this film for me and delivered the goods. I mean, HELLO!?, a film about a metal tornado, how can you go wrong?

The film’s premise is fun simple. I mean what do you honestly expect from a film titled “Metal Tornado”. Due to an ground-breaking industrial experiment that goes out of control, Metal objects start being consumed from the developed magnetic tornadoes and, of course, start wreaking havoc everywhere. It is up to Lou Diamond Phillips to defeat the tornado and save the day.

Anyone who would even consider this film knows exactly what they are getting themselves in for and should have a blast watching this film. This plays exactly like an Syfy Original Movie and if you are a fan of those this is for you, otherwise stay away. The DVD comes with zero special features, which is very disappointing.
