3D Blu-ray Review “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D”

Directed by: Brian Taylor, Mark Neveldine
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Ciarán Hinds, Idris Elba, Violante Placido, Johnny Whitworth
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: June 12, 2012
Running Time: 95 minutes

Blu-ray Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Film Score: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Unlike most people, I was a big fan of the first “Ghost Rider” film. I am also a huge fan of Nicolas Cage and he is at his most zaniest in this film. After seeing the crazy trailer for “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, I was psyched that they were really bringing back Ghost Rider as more dark and violent and even in 3D. But unfortunately, they disappointed by taming this film to yet another safe PG-13 release. Ghost Rider is a dark character from Hell yet they have been afraid to really take the plunge on this franchise. On the bright side of this release though, the Blu-ray is impressive and the 3D is great even though it is converted.

Nicolas Cage returns to the role of Johnny Blaze in this sequel. He is still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter. While hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe, he is recruited by a secret group from the church in order to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil (Ciaran Hinds), who is looking for a new body. Blaze decided to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider once more in order to protect the boy and possibly rid himself of his curse forever.

Even though the film is a bit disappointing, the Blu-ray release is not. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” packs a sweet 1080p 3D transfer and looks better on Blu-ray than it did on the big screen. Though if you are not a fan of 3D, there is also a 2D presentation of the film as well included. Also included is a sweet Ultraviolet streaming digital copy. This Blu-ray also packs a super awesome quality DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio track, which blew up my surround sound.

There special features are impressive overall.  Unlike most 3D releases, this one actually packs a 3D extra called “Riding Into Another Dimension”.  It is a little short but focuses on cast/crew discussing 3D filmmaking and issues with converting the 2D to 3D in post-production. There is an awesome director’s expanded video commentary with picture-in-picture.  It is being described by Sony as “an all access behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film”.   There are just over 10 minutes of deleted scenes included.  Lastly there is a super intense six-part documentary, ” The Path to Vengeance: Making Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, which encompasses focusing on the behind-the-scenes making the film. Highly recommended.

Jaleel White reflects on “Dancing with the Stars” & Syfy’s “Total Blackout”

Jaleel White recently competed on season 14 “Dancing with the Stars”. He also hosted Syfy’s new reality game show “Total Blackout”. Media Mikes had a chance to catch up with Jaleel again in order to reflect on his experiences with “Dancing with the Stars” & Syfy’s “Total Blackout”.

Mike Gencarelli: Can you reflect back on your work on “Dancing with the Stars”?
Jaleel White: The last eleven weeks have been unlike anything I have ever experienced in my career. It’s been hard on the body and very chaotic. People also ask me “Was it fun?” and I tell them “If you ran two marathon’s back-to-back, would you consider that fun” [laughs]. That is how I feel about “Dancing with the Stars”, I have survived some pretty awesome shit. I didn’t fall on my ass out there. Everywhere I go people said they were happy to see my dances and that makes me proud. The training was a lot but it was all necessary. My highlight was the cha-cha week, I knew it wasn’t going to get much better than that.

MG: Do you think that the judges where too hard on you throughout the show?
JW: Look, I am so proud of what I survived. I don’t want to be negative, especially because of how proud I am. Also nobody has ever met the five secret men that handle the fans votes. Since no one has ever met them I will not let it get to me [laughs]. After about week three, I stopped caring about the score to be honest.

MG: Any chance of you coming back for season 15 this Fall for the All-Stars season?
JW: I haven’t been approached or anything. I know the competition was tough enough. I do not know how being elimated in the seventh week makes me an all-star but I learned never to say never.

MG: Are you excited with the success of “Total Blackout”?
JW: I am very happy with that way that “Total Blackout” came out. It is very rare that I can say that about something I had so little to do with in the post-production phases. We have been able to build on the ratings week-to-week, so its been great for us.

MG: I got to tell you my sister ordered Syfy just so that she could watch your show.
JW: [laughs]. You gotta write that in your article. I can’t say anything as cool as that.

MG: Any word about a second season for “Total Blackout”?
JW: No word just yet. I have not been in the game show business for too long but I pick up on things quickly. My only concern about the show is that I know contestants get smarter. Even though the lights are off, we will have contestants that will have seen the show and once they know what game they are playing will go back to a mental picture. So they are really going to have to work hard to stay away from contestants looking to outsmart the show and also to keep the show fresh and moving forward.

Blu-ray Review “Demoted”

Directed by: J.B. Rodgers
Starring: David Cross, Michael Vartan, Sean Astin
MPAA Rating: R
Distributed by: Starz / Anchor Bay
Release Date: June 12, 2012
Running Time: 94 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

This film is being marketed from the guys who brought us the “American Pie” franchise” and that is really a good and a bad thing. The main selling point for this film is the cast and without them this would fail miserably. This comedy delivers a fun time but is rather predictable and runs a little weak in the middle. There is some good laughs though, which is enough for me to recommend this release.

This film follows a pair of prank-playing tire salesmen, Rodney (Michael Vartan) and Mike (Sean Astin). After they play one too many pranks on their recently new boss (David Cross), they find themselves demoted to secretarial jobs. Now the two pranksters will have to climb their way back to the top. The collaborative of Michael Vartan, Sean Astin and David Cross works well and they mesh well. The film also had a decent supporting cast including Sara Foster, Ron White, Constance Zimmer and Cleo King.

This is one of those films that you really don’t need to have on Blu-ray. It is a standard Blu-ray, it has good but not spectacular video and sound. If you are also look for ANY special features, look again because this release is super bare-bones. If you are looking for a new “Office Space”, this unfortunately is not it but it is still a bit of fun.

DVD Review “13 Assassins (1963)”

Directed by: Eiichi Kudo
Starring: Koutaro Satomi, Ko Nishimura, Chiezo Kataoka, Ryohei Uchida
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Animeigo
Release Date: June 5, 2012
Running Time: 125 minutes

DVD Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Film Score: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras Score: 2 out of 5 stars

When it comes to 1963’s “13 Assassins”, I know this film is the original but I liked Takashi Miike’s 2010 adaption far more. Though, this black and white adaption is virtually bloodless tough it still manages to be semi-effective. The one aspect I had major trouble with was Animeigo’s subtitles. They chose the most annoying font and they continue to change the color with each person that speaks.  This is very distracting, especially with a black and white film.  Not sure if that was the best decision here.

The film’s story is about a group of top class assassins, who set out to remove Lord Naritsugu before he enters into a political position. The Lord does follow any rules and kills anyone that crosses his path. It is up to the 13 chosen assassins to bring him down before he reaches his destination.

The DVD is presented in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. It also only included a Japanese audio track with its Dolby Digital Stereo, no dub track. There are a few special features but nothing worth checking out. Included are Trailers, Program Notes, Cast & Crew Bios and Image Gallery. Overall if you are fan of samurai films, it is worth checking out but definitely not my favorite. I prefer the 2010 remake for sure.

Blu-ray Review “The Delta Force”

Directed by: Menahem Golan
Starring: Chuck Norris, Lee Marvin, Martin Balsam
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox / MGM
Release Date: June 5, 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 128 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

I remember the first time I saw “The Delta Force”, I was blown away. You have the amazing Chuck Norris topped off with the amazing Lee Marvin and Martin Balsam. This film has a lot of ass-kicking kick-ass action, say that 5x fast. Honestly one of the best 80′s action films that I have seen. Currently this film is a Walmart exclusive release and is only available to purchase there. It is cool to have this film on Blu-ray but it is a bit of a letdown with its bare bones release. I feel that this is really a cash-in to capital on Norris’ return to theaters in “The Expendables 2″.

This film focuses around terrorism on a plane, wow, not even Chuck Norris would be able to do that today.  After a 707 aircraft on its way from Athens to Rome and then to New York City is hijacked by Lebanese terrorists, but the terrorist don’t realize they are up again Chuck Norris.  Major McCoy and by Colonel Alexander are called in to eliminate the threat and retake the plane before the terrorists kill all the hostages.

“The Delta Force” looks good on Blu-ray presentation for a 1986 film, with its 1080p transfer. It is also presented in a slightly altered aspect ratio of 1.78:1. But like the other recently released Norris films, the audio track is disappointing with no surround track, only a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono. Nonetheless, if you are Chuck Norris loyal fan like myself, you will be happy enough just to have this film in HD. I can live without special features.

Release Date: June 5, 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 95 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars

If you haven’t seen Chuck Norris kick some major ass in “Missing in Action”, then you just haven’t lived. This film is a great follow-up to a great 80’s action film. Currently this film is a Walmart exclusive release and is only available to purchase there. It is cool to have this film on Blu-ray but it is a bit of a letdown like “Missing in Action”. I feel that this is really a cash-in to capital on Norris’ return to theaters in “The Expendables 2”.

This film is a prequel to the first “Missing In Action”, it flashbacks to when Colonel Braddock was captured during a rescue mission in the Vietnam war. It focuses around him and the other American POWs in a prison camp and his plans to escape. Braddock becomes a one-man fighting machine with his only mission to free himself and his men at any cost.

The Blu-ray presentation for “Missing In Action 2: The Beginning” looks good with its 1080p transfer. It is also presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. But like “Mission in Action”, the audio track is disappointing with no surround track, only a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono. Nonetheless, if you are Chuck Norris loyal fan like myself, you will be happy enough just to have this film in HD. I can live without special features.

Blu-ray Review “Missing in Action”

Directed by: Joseph Zito
Starring: Chuck Norris, M. Emmet Walsh, David Tress

Release Date: June 5, 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 101 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars

When its comes to Chuck Norris, I am completely bias. I love of his films and they just crack me up. I don’t laugh at him, I am just in awe of his coolness. I am the Chuck Norris fan that wears his shirts, recite his “facts” and respects the beard. Currently this film is a Walmart exclusive release and is only available to purchase there. It is cool to have this film on Blu-ray but it is a bit of a letdown. I feel that this is really a cash-in to capital on Norris’ return to theaters in “The Expendables 2”.

“Missing in Action” was a big franchise for Norris. It was followed by two sequels, both equally as good as the first. The first film follows, Colonel James Braddock, an American officer, who after escaping from a Vietnamese POW camp, he heads back to locate and save remaining MIAs. with the help of an attractive State Department official (Lenore Kasdorf) and a former Army buddy (M. Emmet Walsh), Braddock prepares to blast his way into Vietnam and save the day.

This release gives “Missing in Action” a decent presentation with its 1080p transfer. It is also presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The audio track is disappointing though with no surround track, only a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono. Nonetheless, if you are Chuck Norris loyal fan like myself, you will be happy enough just to have this film in HD. I can live without special features.

Blu-ray Review “Bad Ass”

Directed by: Craig Moss
Starring: Danny Trejo, Charles S. Dutton, Ron Perlman, Joyful Drake, Patrick Fabian
MPAA Rating: R
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: June 5, 2012
Running Time: 90 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2 out of 5 stars

Finally a film that lives up to its title! “Bad Ass” is totally bad-ass (sorry, couldn’t resist). Danny Trejo is one of my favs and really kicks some major ass in this film. I thought he was awesome in “Machete”, this film gives it a run for its money. I found myself completely sitting on the edge of my chair, laughing and routing for Trejo. Yes it is cheesy.  Yes it is campy.  But if you are looking for a fun time and complete over-the-top action, do not miss “Bad Ass”.

The film follow Vietnam War veteran Frank Vega (Trejo) who after stopping hate crime on a city bus, footage of him beating down goes viral online and become an overnight celebrity. The fun does not last long when his best friend is murdered and the police are not willing to find his killer.  Vega decided to put his new Bad Ass nickname to work and hit the streets in pursuit of some ole’ fashion justice!

The Blu-ray presentation itself is impressive.  It’s video resolution on the 1080p looks good and comes with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1.  The audio also impresses with its DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.  I mean how can you not laugh in when Trejo walks down the street in slow-motion with his own “Bad Ass” theme song in the background blasting through the surround speakers.  The special features included are not as great as the film.  They only have included an audio commentary track and a brief behind-the-scenes featurette “Birth of Bad Ass”.

Engelbert Humperdinck talks about new song and the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest

Engelbert Humperdinck is an internationally loved and respected singer, who has been in the business for over 45 years.  He was recently chosen to represent the UK in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with his new song “Love Will Set You Free”.  Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Engelbert again about Eurovision, love songs and his constant touring.

Mike Gencarelli: Let’s talk about how you came to represent the UK in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012?
Engelbert Humperdinck: Actually, it all came down to the BBC in the UK. The big bosses came together and picked me out of a hat. They figured I’ve been in the business a while and I am a great embassador for the country. I was very honoured to be chosen to represent my country.

MG: Tell us about the origin of “Love Will Set You Free”?
EH: The two guys that wrote the song are very well known. Sacha Skarbek is an Ivor Novello Awards winner and Martin Terefe is the number one producer in England at the moment. Martin plays guitar…and bass on the song. I also just made an album with him about four months ago. He is so laid back and unbelieveable to work with. What happened with the song is that BBC setup everything. They found the writers and the song. They heard it, loved it and passed it on to me and I loved it. I have had a trendous success with waltzes. This is a Viennese Waltz. “The Last Waltz” was a big hit for me and I am thrilled about it.

MG: What do you think makes a great love song?
EH: A great experience I suppose. The writers must have had a great experience. It resonates to the listeners who also can relate to an experience. Good lyrics. Good melody. Good message. That is what it is that makes up a great song. Waltzes last a life time. Maybe one day they will be dancing to this song on “Dancing with the Stars”.

MG: I watched your concert at Northern Quest Resort & Casino last month presented by Front and Center, how do you feel that you are now streaming your shows to the internet?
EH: It is a whole new market. It is a great way to get the masses. Once it catches on, it will be great. Of course there is nothing like a live concert. If they watch it online they will get a chance to see what it would be like live. We have had a wonderful reaction to this concert, especially with the ability to chat with other fans via Facebook comments.

MG: Do you plan to do more concerts like this in the future?
EH: I am sure in the future we will be doing this again soon!

MG: You are always touring all over the world, how can you feel that touring internationally differs from the U.S.?
EH: I am touring more world concerts now. I just finished in Dubai, Sinapore…I am everywhere. It was great to go countries like Russia that do not even speak the language but they are still singing along. How do they do this I do not know? But it is just amazing.

MG: You are very involved with your fans, any words of wisdom to share with them?
EH: Not wisdom but gratitude. Thank you for supporting me for the last 45 years. They have been nothing but terrific.

MG: With Eurovision and constant touring, has this delayed the progress on your new album?
EH: It should be released right after Eurovision and it is a collabaration album. I can’t say who I will be collaberating with yet since you know how record labels like to keep things in the bag waiting for a suprise [laugh].

Film Review “Top Priority: The Terror Within”

Directed by: Asif Akbar
Not Rated
Running time: 1 hour 35 mins
Fleur De Lis Film Studios

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

Wow!

Knowing I had just seen his new documentary, “Top Priority: The Terror Within,” producer BJ Davis asked me what I had thought of the film. I summed my review up in one word.

Much has been made of the state of the world since the horror of September 11, 2001. As citizens we’ve been told to keep our eyes open…to report anything we may think is suspicious. But what if you worked for the U.S. Government’s Department of Homeland Security and you discovered that no less than 23 “Special Interest Aliens” (read: persons from such countries as Iraq, Libya, Indonesia and others) just walked across the Mexican border into the United States. You’d notify your superiors, right? Apparently not if you want to keep your job.

The central figure in this film is Julia Davis. Born in Kiev, Russia she met and fell in love with American filmmaker BJ Davis while he was making a movie in her country. Emigrating to the USA and armed with Masters Degrees in Aviation and Spacecraft Engineering, she soon found herself working for the Department of Homeland Security as a Customs and Border Patrol Officer. So strong was her knowledge of, and commitment to, the job that she would often appear on national news programs as an anti-terrorist expert to field questions. In an average month, approximately 10-15 “Special Interest Aliens” would be given authorization to enter the USA, usually after a lengthy question and answer session with a DHS agent. While checking her daily work Davis discovered that, in a 10 hour period on July 4, 2004, 23 “Special Interested Aliens” entered the US without so much as one question by anyone in authority. When Davis reported this horrific breach of security all hell broke loose. On her.

It’s often hard to judge a politically themed documentary. Sometimes, as in the case of some of Michael Moore’s work, the information given is slanted. I’m not saying it’s wrong…I’m just saying that sometimes you don’t see all that is to be seen. That is not the case here. Pressing on with her complaint, Davis soon finds herself the target of harassment at work as well as having to deal with fifty-four fraudulent charges leveled at her. Each one of these charges is proven false thanks to an unprecedented glimpse at government video depositions as well as video surveillance tapes. In one instance, Ms. Davis reports that her superior, Linda Boutwell (who Ms. Davis’ attorney humorously refers to as “Miss BUTT-well” when he discusses her) picked up her personal backpack and threw it to the floor so forcefully that the cell phone inside was broken. Boutwell submits a sworn statement claiming to have never touched Ms. Davis’ backpack. When government investigators are confronted by video surveillance tape that shows Boutwell doing exactly what she is charged with, they inexplicably side with her. The case gets even more involving when Boutwell tells her superiors that Davis, while at work for the Department of Homeland Security, is secretly helping her husband and his crew make a local film. According to Boutwell she is told this information by actress Brittany Murphy. When the Davis’ inquire as to why these charges were made, Murphy informs them that, though she is friends with Boutwell’s daughter, she never made those statements. What follows for the next 18 months is an all out assault on the very freedoms Ms. Davis swore to protect. She is followed by helicopters…her house is illegally searched…the government tries to have her deported, calling her marriage to BJ a sham. They even arrange to have local police pull the Davis’ over at pre-scheduled times to prevent them from arriving at court hearings and depositions on time.

Surprising to hear? It was to me. But every accusation is backed up with proof! There is no gray area here. It’s all there in the black and white video footage as well as the notes and documents the Davis’ were able to track down. And they weren’t the only people under surveillance. In an interview shortly before she died at the age of 30, Brittany Murphy told the writer she knew she being watched. In fact, it was much worse. Murphy endured helicopter surveillance, wiretaps, an arrest in the middle of the night and an unsuccessful attempt to deport her fiancée Simon Monjack, whom she later married. That shortly after her statement both Murphy and Monjack suddenly died only makes the case more bizarre!

There are more twists and turns to this film then all of the rides at Disneyland. “Top Priority: The Terror Within” is a film that will make you think and, hopefully, say “Wow!”

Film Review “Prometheus”

Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron
Directed by: Ridley Scott
MPAA Rating: R
Running time: 2 hrs 4 mins
20th Century Fox

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

According to the “Alien” time line, it was June 2122 (about 110 years from now) that the USCSS Nostromo ran into a little trouble.

In 2093 a group of space travelers, led by scientists Elizabeth Shaw (Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) awaken from a deep slumber to find themselves in route to what they hope is the discovery of the century. Their trip financed by the very wealth, but very old, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), the reason for this mission comes from the various paintings found on ancient cave wall all over the world. To Elizabeth and Charlie the clues are unmistakable. “I think they want us to come find them,” Elizabeth comments. Maybe…..

Directed with the same master-touch he brought to such films as “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” Thelma and Louise” and “Gladiator” by Ridley Scott, “Prometheus” is a stand-alone film that may or may not have something to do with the “Alien” series. I’m hedging my comments because it’s truly up for the audience to decide Scott’s message to film goers. Co-written by long time “Lost” scribe Damon Lindelof, who also has “Cowboys and Aliens” and the upcoming “Star Trek” film on his list of credits, the story blends horror and mystery perfectly, greatly assisted by some first rate actors.

Fassbender continues his rise to the top of my favorite actors working today with a brilliant portrayal of David, a cyborg creature still trying his best to understand the world around him and the people he serves. Rapace is a revelation as a tougher then she seems character who actually “out-Ripleys” Sigourney Weaver’s character in “Alien.” Though Elizabeth and Charlie are technically in charge of the expedition the real boss is Meridith Vickers (Theron), a woman shrouded in mystery. As played by Theron she is very tough and self-sufficient. Other members of the crew include ship captain Janek (Idris Elba) and his first mate, Ravel (Benedict Wong).

Like with “Alien,” Scott depends on the atmosphere and sets to influence the audience’s emotions. His cameras move briskly through vast caves and hurtle down ship hallways as if he’s leading a roller coaster ride that you can’t catch your breath on. The production design by long time Scott associate and two-time Oscar nominee (“Gladiator,” “American Gangster”) Arthur Max is stunning while the musical score by Marc Streitenfeld helps set the films’ tone.

Danny Elfman is one of my favorite composers of all-time. He has such a unique sound and when you hear his scores you know right away it is his work. It is only right that Danny Elfman composed the score for this film, especially since he scored the two previous “Men In Black” movies. In his third time around it this franchise, he is still able to deliver an entertaining score and even packs a bit of heart.

One of my favorites tracks on the album has to be the relaxing yet comforting “Under the Bridge”.  Believe it or not I was not a fan of “Men in Black 3 – Main Titles”.  I love the theme to “Men in Black” but the added electric guitars on these main titles did not sit right with me and left me wanting to skip to the next track.  I feel that Danny Elfman has really matured though over on this score and after two films he really understands what to deliver for “Men in Black”.

Like in most of Eflman’s work he continues to blend orchestral and electronic sounds.  The album is itself runs just shy of 60 minutes and really sums up the whole film from the moment it starts.  If you are a fan of the “Men in Black” series and Elfman’s past scores you will not be disappointed with this release.  Also if you haven’t seen this film it really kicks you in the mood to watch it for sure.
