Interview with Kansas’ Rich Williams

Rich Williams is the lead guitarist from band Kansas.  The band is responsible for such memorable songs such as “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind”.  The band is currently touring the country with there Collegiate Symphony Tour.  Media Mikes was able to chat with Rich about the tour and what he enjoys most about performing on the stage.

Mike Gencarelli: What can we expect from this year’s Collegiate Symphony Tour?
Rich Williams: The tour is going great! This was something we started last year and because of the great response we received we decided to do it again this year. We are hoping that the more colleges we play others will pick up on what we are doing and they will want us to play at their school as well. It’s been a great time.

MG: What has it been like working with the college students on the shows?
RW: It’s a lot of fun. The students seem to really enjoy it and they get to do something they may normally not have the chance to do in their normal curriculum.

MG: What do you like most about performing live as of late?
RW: It’s hard to describe as this is what I have always done. A long time ago I used to work at a liquor store while I was in college and then I started playing. I really haven’t done anything else. It’s a normal day to me. Everything is really fun however, when we have a couple weeks off I tend to go a little stir crazy.

MG: Is there one song that you really enjoy playing live each night?
RW: There are a lot of songs I enjoy. We have added quite a few songs to the set recently. We added a song called “Down The Road” back into the set. We have been playing a lot of symphony shows as well as shows at state fairs. There are some songs that don’t work without the symphony so we have to fill that time in. We haven’t played “Down The Road” live in a year or two. A lot of times we will pick a song, rehearse it in the dressing room and then go out and play it. It’s fun not to be on auto pilot.

MG: What were the bands initial inspirations?
RW: Everyone in Topeka at the time was in a band after the British Invasion hit. Some people eventually lost interest or got a day job. After a while the musicians who were left were the ones who either wanted play the Holiday Inn lounge or who really wanted to make it.  We were all really inspired by the things coming out of Europe and none of us were ready for a real job yet. All of us wanted to do real original music and that’s what really got us started.

MG: What type of music have you been listening to lately that you really enjoy?
RW: I really don’t listen to music as of late. I am just so busy that I don’t have time for anything. If I do listen to something it’s probably because I walked past a speaker that was playing something and that’s what I am listening to.

MG: Your song “Carry On Wayward Son” was featured in the video game “Guitar Hero”. Have you ever tried playing it?
RW: Before “Guitar Hero” came out they sent me all the hardware for it. The thing is I never heard back from them. I wasn’t really too interested in the game but my kids did enjoy playing it. The game has brought a lot of new people to our concerts and it has really sparked something. In my opinion anything that promotes playing music is great.

MG: “Dust In The Wind” is often used quite a bit in movies. How do you feel about the ongoing popularity of the song?
RW: Those things are what keep us out there. Both the songs you mentioned are bigger than we are. People a lot of the time know the songs but they don’t know us as a band.

MG: Are there any plans to record and release new material?
RW: It would be great to do one but then there is reality. They take a lot of time and money to put together. We are out there playing because we love it. Not for the money. If we were going to be recording an album it would be us as a band paying for that. Besides the fact that I am not independently, radio won’t play anything new and people don’t really come to shows to hear new material. Once you realize that reality that people don’t truly care about new material you have to come up with a way to recreate yourself. That’s why we did the symphony album and tour. It’s a way of doing something different and fresh with what you already have.

Film Review “Arthur Christmas”

Directed by: Sarah Smith
Starring: James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton,
Ashley Jensen, Ramona Marquez
Distributed by: Columbia Pictures
MPAA Rating: PG
Running time: 97 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The holidays seasons are here and that means new Christmas movies. For kids that weren’t able to see “A Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas”, this is the film for them. “Arthur Christmas” is fun for the whole family. It is very colorful and funny for kids and it is witty for adults. The film also mixes in a little flavor of sci-fi with the whole spaceship/sleigh. I caught the film presented in 3D and I thought it was just OK and could have been seen in 2D, without losing anything. The story is fun, the voice cast is fantastic and it also has some great heart.

The story of “Arthur Christmas” follows Santa Clause and his family as we see the behind the scenes of what happened on the night Santa delivers the presents to the children of the world. We meet Arthur who is the clumsy son of Santa but he has a real heart for the spirit of Christmas. His older brother Steve is running the show behind the scenes helping Santa with his high tech equipment but ends up missing one child. Arthur sets out on a journey with the help of Grandsanta to deliver that one gift and shows what Christmas is all about.

The voice of Arthur is played by James McAvoy. He is funny and very likable. Hugh Laurie, aka Fox’s House, voices Steve, Arthur’s older brother and runner up to take over Santa’s reign. He is a awesome baddie. Jim Broadbent voices the big guy, Santa, and Bill Nighy voices Grandsanta and steals the show easily (as usual). Keep an ear out for other notable voices as well such as Will Sasso as American James, Joan Cusack as Mission Control Elf, Michael Palin as Ernie Clicke, Dominic West as Field Sargent Elf and Andy Serkis as General Elf.

One thing I would like to let Sony know if you going to include a music video by Justin Bieber, please make sure next time to include it AFTER the credits and not before. It was torturous having to watch that video. Overall though, this film will surely get you in the Christmas spirit and ready for the holidays. Get your family together and head out to enjoy this film this holiday season.

King of the ‘Rÿche: An Interview with Queensrÿche’s Geoff Tate

While standing outside of the Orlando House of Blues’ green room waiting to interview Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche, three musical things can be discerned: the sound check of the opening band, Geoff doing some pre-concert vocal warm-ups and – very faintly – the calming strains of classical music.   It’s an interesting mix of stimuli to be sure.  When Geoff completes his exercises, he’s ready to talk – which is amazing given that Queensrÿche’s sound check went for an hour more than scheduled and that the band has less than two hours before they have to take the stage and deliver the goods to a packed house.

Tate’s look has changed many times over the course of the 30 years he’s been with the band.  Gone is the coiffed long black hair that appeared in the videos for “Silent Lucidity” and “Jet City Woman” from the band’s hugely successful 1990 release, “Empire”.  These days, Geoff is sporting a bald head and a pencil-thin goatee that cause me to immediately conjure up mental images of Ming the Merciless and Anton LaVey.  But Tate’s demeanor is far from threatening and certainly not in any way demonic.  For a singer known for his ability to carry high-pitched metal wailings, his deep voice is one that is surprisingly soft-spoken.

The green room’s two plush couches upon which he and I sit are rather relaxing – as is the Debussy that continues to softly play from his iPod’s dock’s speakers, something that will remain a constant throughout our conversation.

Well…at least for half of it.

Dave Picton:  So you’re on your 30th anniversary tour.
Geoff Tate:  Yeah.  The end of it.  There’s the show tonight and then we have two shows on the boat and a show in Clearwater. Today is kind of a hectic day because we’re getting ready to go on a ShipRocked Cruise.  Certain equipment goes and certain things stay, you know?  We’re playing “Mindcrime” on the boat, so we’re rehearsing it now because we haven’t played the whole thing in quite a few years.

DP: The band has largely been the same group of guys that you’ve been working with since 1981.
GT:  Yeah.  Four out of five.

DP:  As you look back are there good memories?  Not so good memories?
GT:  Oh yeah, there’s both. Lots of both.

DP:  After a bunch of concept albums that you released within the past decade or so, such as “Operation: Mindcrime II” and “American Soldier”,  the latest new album, “Dedicated to Chaos”, finds the band going for straight-forward singles-oriented songs that often have new technology as a central theme.  What’s your take on technology?
GT:  Oh, it’s fascinating.  Very fun.  It can definitely be something that sidetracks you from a lot of things and definitely takes your attention away from a lot of other things while you’re figuring out the latest gadget.  A lot of really good things like studio stuff and recording equipment and all that has gotten really modular and now you can take it anywhere you want and record in rooms like this and airplanes.  We do a lot of work all on computers now   It’s great.  You can really sketch out an idea.  It helps in the studio in terms of composing and coming up with new stuff and making demos.

DP:  When you record demos now, how far are you going with the song?  I know that it used to be that it would be fairly crude like when Buck Dharma of Blue Öyster Cult recorded the “Don’t Fear the Reaper” demo, he was playing drums on cardboard boxes. Now you can have a demo be pretty close to what the final cut is going to sound like.
GT:  Well, sound-wise, you can get really close.  But working with the other guys in the studio is a whole different thing.  Personally, in my opinion, songs turn out better when everybody’s playing together.  There’s a kind of synergy that happens with the musicians and you take an idea a lot further along when you get other people involved.  You can take it on your own and get good sounds but you don’t get the really cool performances and the particular thing that they do.

DP:  “Operation: Mindcrime” has very much become heavy metal’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in terms of how timeless it truly is.  As of late, it’s also become very timely with events that are going on right now.  For example, there are a bunch of videos on YouTube of “Mindcrime” songs that feature photo montages of Occupy Wall Street.  What’s your take on the relevance of those lyrics to this cause?
GT:  Well, the movement is really interesting. Over the last couple of months, every city we’ve gone to, there have been protestors everywhere.  Thousands of them, not just a handful, you know?  The news likes to say that there are a lot of angry people out there – and rightly so.  It’s getting pretty tough to make a living these days in this country.  It’s a massive complex issue and there’s no simple answer to it. But it’s kind of what’s happened because our country is built on business and commerce.  That’s our culture, really.  And those things mean competition which wastes the other guy to get ahead.  If somebody can make more money selling jobs to overseas workers, they’re gonna do it if there’s no law that says they can’t. So that’s what’s happened.  We’ve sold all of our jobs and our manufacturing to other places and what have we got now?  We have a nation full of people that are trained for the service industry which is great but now that people aren’t spending money to go out and eat dinner what are you gonna do then?  Every action has a reaction to it. People think it’s fine to download music.  Well, downloading music has gutted an industry.  Where 10 years ago there were 50,000 or 100,000 people employed by the record industry, now there’s 3,000.  The industry is failing and the money is gone because somebody thought it was OK to steal the product.  You can’t fight that now that we’ve raised a generation of people who don’t see anything wrong with it.  In fact, I think they just passed a law that says file sharing is legal now.  Great.  Thanks.  Now you can steal my work.  Where does that end? It all affects everyone else, you know? So all of those people that are out of work in the industry now don’t have a job where they can go and pay to get their car fixed, so the mechanic is short on work now.  And because he’s short on work, he can’t buy the groceries he normally would buy at the grocery store so now the grocery store is hurting.  It all affects everything.

DP:  A domino effect happens.
GT:  Exactly.  It’s a massive massive problem that nobody has an answer for.  It’s something we really have to look at and study and maybe change the way we think and the way we do things.

DP:  I think fundamentally that’s one of the core things on which the movement is based.
GT:  Yeah. I think that’s probably at the core of what a lot of the protestors are talking about – at least the ones I’ve talked to.  There’s a lot of people who don’t know what they’re protesting against so they don’t know how to define it or verbalize it but there’s a LOT of people that do.  It’s an interesting movement.  There’s a lot of anger and frustration that it’s based around and when people get angry and frustrated, violence happens.  So we could be on the brink of something pretty major here over the next few months I would guess.

DP:  It seems to be growing.
GT:  It is. We’ll see where it goes.

DP:  Anyways, back to some music questions.  If I snagged your iPod and I hit random, what would I hear?
GT:  Well let’s look. [reaches over to turn off  his iPod and remove it from its stereo speaker dock]  We were just listening to Debussy.  Artists or albums?

DP:  Let’s go with artists.
GT:  I’ll start at the top. [calls up his artist playlist]

DP:  Wow. All over the map.  America. Aerosmith. Beck. Benny Goodman. Black Sabbath. Brian Setzer. Frank Sinatra. Candy Dulfer.  Awesome saxophone player!  There’s actually quite a lot of saxophone on the new Queensrÿche album.
GT: Actually, there’s been saxophone on every album since..uh… “Promised Land” I believe.  Anyway, as you can see, there’s a lot of variance here on my iPod. [laughs]  Do you know of Erykah Badu?

DP:  I do.  I love her song “Next Lifetime”.
GT: She’s one of my favorites.  And we’re just halfway through the list! I’ve got a lot of stuff.

DP:  You’re not kidding! John Lennon & Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. Miles Davis.  Diana Krall. I’ve noticed there’s quite a lot of jazz.
GT:  There’s a lot of jazz on it.  A majority of the stuff on here is old jazz.

DP:  But certainly not exclusively.  Neil Young.  Moody Blues.  Loreena McKennit.  I’ve seen her live.  Absolutely amazing show.  Pink Floyd.  Sade.  Yes.  I just interviewed Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman a month or so ago. Man…the list goes on and on.  And – but of course – Queensrÿche.  In the near future, what might I see on your Pod in terms of those guys?
GT:  [laughs]  I don’t  know.  We don’t really have a plan right now.  Honestly, this has been a really long tour and everybody’s just kind of burnt out right now.  It’s probably just time to get home and chill and recharge the batteries.  And then we’ll start talking in a couple of months about “Oh, do you wanna do something?” and we’ll see what happens.

DVD Review ‘What Women Want (2011)”

Directed by: Chen Daming
Starring: Andy Lau, Gong Li,
Distributed by: New Video Group
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 116 minutes

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars

When I heard that there was a Chinese remake of the Mel Gibson starer “What Women Want”, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I am a big of of Andy Lau and Gong Li though, so right off the bat I was interested. Well I was definitely surprised since I enjoyed this film very much. The story was similar to the US version but had more of a new interesting feel added to it. It was funny and also had some good drama as well.

We follow Sun Zigang (Andy Lau) who works as an advertising agency and gets a new boss. The thing is the boss, Li Yilong, is a woman and threatens Sun’s position. During their first meeting Li suggests that in order to be able to sell their women’s products that the men should use the products first. After a freak accident Sun is slightly electrocuted, survives but now can hear all women’s thoughts. He uses this to get a head at work but ends up falls for his boss in the process.

The film runs a little long at around two hours but overall is very entertaining. My only real negative comment is that the DVD does not come with any special features at all. Even though it lists the Mandarin audio track with English & Chinese subtitles, but it is not a bonus feature and is in fact the only audio track available. Besides that I would definitely recommend this film.

Interview with Carmen & Dolores Chaplin

In the long history of Hollywood there is probably no bigger name than that of Charlie Chaplin. A brilliant comedian in his native England, Chaplin came to America and introduced the world to perhaps the most beloved character of his era, the Little Tramp. He also made the successful jump from silent films to talkies, a subject that is explored in the new film “The Artist.”

To highlight the opening of “The Artist,” MediaMikes had the great opportunity to speak with two of Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughters, Carmen and Dolores. Named for two popular actresses of their era (Dolores del Rio and Carmen Miranda), the two have worked steadily both in Europe and in the States. They collaborated on a short film entitled “Tryst in Paname,” which is about to begin making the film festival rounds.

Mike Smith: You both grew up around show business and are obviously aware of your grandfather’s legacy. Did you see “The Artist” as a homage to your grandfather’s work?
Carmen Chaplin: We see it as a film that stands on its own. Obviously the fact that it’s in black and white and silent and has a lot of historical references you could see it as some sort of homage. But it stands on its own. As a film it’s a great film.

MS: Had this film been released during your grandfather’s era do you think he would have enjoyed the film?
CC: Oh yes. He also had to deal with the transition to “talkies.” It would have been a story very much of its time then. Actors didn’t think about transitioning to talking films until later. So yes, I think he would have enjoyed it.

MS: You’re both named after popular actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Do you have a strong appreciation for that time?
CC: Yes. I think when you’re involved with films and you honestly love film you have to remember those times. Everything that they did then was revolutionary. It was a very exciting time and it’s exciting to look back.
Dolores Chaplin: Definitely. I love looking back at the history of films. The industry was literally built from nothing. They had to create it. Everything was new. It must have been an extremely exciting time to be in the movies back then.

MS: You both are working actresses. Do you think the “Chaplin” name helped or hurt you at the beginning of your careers.
DC: I still haven’t worked that one out. It depends on the day (laughs).
CC: It really depends on who you talk to. I really have no idea. It does come with some preconceptions, obviously, but it is a lovely name to carry.
DC: People have a lot of love and admiration for our grandfather so it’s rather nice when the connection is made. We try to make it rub off on us. (both laugh)

MS: Carmen, you recently followed in your grandfather’s footsteps by writing and directing the short film “Tryst in Paname” which co-starred your Dolores. How has that project been received?
CC: In the past few weeks I recently finished post-production. We’re getting ready to do the festival circuit now.

MS: Do you have any plans to tackle a feature film?
CC: Yes. That’s the idea. We did this short film which we’ll be showing about. I’ve written a feature film which I want to direct. My sister will be starring in it. But we need something to show that we are good at what we are doing.

MS: Dolores, do you have any plans to go behind the camera one day as a writer or director?
DC: Well, I’m never going to say never. But at the moment, no.

Blu-ray Review “Life, Above All”

Directed by: Oliver Schmitz
Starring: Khomotso Manyaka, Lerato Mvelase, Harriet Manamela
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Classics
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running time: 106 minutes

Overall Score: 3 out of 5 stars

If this film sounds familiar, it should since it was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. The content of the film is so intense and the acting is even more intense. You almost forgot at times that you are watching a movie and think that this is real. The film itself is based on a book called “Chanda’s Secrets” by Allan Stratton. The film is also in it is native language of Northern Sotho and was shot on location in South Africa…so expect to be reading those subtitles.

The story focuses on a young girl Chandra (Khomotso Manyaka) who is trying to work through the loss of her newly born sister, her mother’s sickness and lack of money. Chandra sets out to help her month and find an answer to her problems. The acting in this film is really great. Khomotso Manyaka gives a very powerful performance, as a first-time actress. I will love to see what she does next and I am sure she has a very bright career. I thought the film ran a little slow but it has a really big heart.

This film is released in a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack, which I really enjoyed. The Blu-ray presentation looks great and really captures the environment really well. When it comes to bonus features there is not much…would have loved a commentary from the director. There is a behind-the-scenes featurette called “The Making of “Life, Above All”, which is only available on the Blu-ray.

Concert Review “Epitaph Tour 2011” Rochester, NY

“Epitaph Tour 2011”
Judas Priest, Black Label Society, Thin Lizzy, DJ Lady Starlight
Date: Wednesday, November 16th 2011
Venue: Main St. Armory, Rochester, NY

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

The Epitaph Tour headlined by Judas priest made its way to upstate New York on Nov. 16th playing to a near capacity crowd. The tour is slated to be the last tour for heavy metal legends Judas Priest who will be retiring from the road after almost 40 years in the music business. The crowd consisted of a variety of ages that ranged from pre-teens on up to what appeared to be grandparents. DJ Lady Starlight kicked off the night spinning a variety of heavy metal classics which she would continue to do in between each of the other acts sets. Thin Lizzy took the stage first playing a variety of hits. Though the crowd’s reception to the band started off luke warm classic tracks such as “Jail Break” and “The Boy’s Are Back In Town” quickly won the audience over.

Black Label Society took the stage next and was surely a crowd favorite. Zakk Wylde and company put on a stellar performance which seemed to work the crowd into a rabid frenzy. Songs such as “Crazy Horse”, “Fire It Up” and “Stillborn” gave the crowd plenty to bang their heads to. Though the band only played an hour each member appeared to give it their all. The assembled masses in return showed their appreciation in a variety of ways.

Judas Priest would take the stage next to close out the night. The stage featured a chain link motif that only added to the fact that after 40 years in the business the band are still the kings of heavy metal. At times throughout the set I found it hard to hear Rob Halfords vocals which seemed to get lost in the mix. That aside the band was extremely tight. Newly added guitarist Richie Faulkner who replaces K.K. Downing did an excellent job and seemed to fit right in with the veteran metalers from Birmingham, England. The set featured a variety of classic songs assembled from the bands vast catalog. Songs such as “Diamonds and Rust” Screaming for Vengeance” and “Hell Bent For Leather” which featured Halfords signature of riding a motorcycle across the stage were definite highlights.

If you are fan of both classic and newer heavy metal you will want to check out the Epitaph Tour. Not to mention this will most likely be one of the last times you will be able to see Judas priest live.

CD Review: Me Vs Myself “Where I Am…Where I Want to Be” EP

Me Vs Myself
“Where I Am…Where I Want to Be” EP
Tracks: 5

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

“Where I Am…Where I Want to Be” EP is the second release from the band Me Vs Myself. The Seattle band consists of members from the bands On The Last Day, Aiden and Forgive Durden? Together the quartet brings forth a sound that is full of fun lyrics and riffs

This EP features a catchy grouping of songs that are really enjoyable to listen to. It was a nice change to hear something this upbeat and fresh. The track “Now and Then” features a really great chorus that is super catchy and will in no time have you singing along. Tracks like “The Right Time” and “Carefully” feature nice laid back arrangements.

Being a relative stranger to Me Vs Myself prior to listening to the EP, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However after listening to the 5 tracks contained on “Where I Am…Where I Want to Be”, I quickly became a fan and can’t wait to hear what else the band has in store.

Track Listing:
1.)    Before I Wake
2.)    Perfectly Wrong
3.)    Now And Then
4.)    The Right Time
5.)    Carefully

CD Review: The Last Vegas “Other Side EP”

The Last Vegas
“Other Side EP”
Eleven Seven Music
Producer: Johnny K
Tracks: 3

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5stars

“Other Side EP” is the latest release from the band The Last Vegas. Based out of Chicago, IL the band blends a variety of rock sounds both new and old. The EP was produced by Grammy Nominated producer Jonny K who has worked with acts such as Disturbed, 3 Doors Down and, Staind. The EP is being released through Eleven Seven Music and features 3 new tracks available for free through the bands website.

Though the EP only features 3 songs each of those songs are packed with rock and roll goodness. If these 3 tracks are any indication of what’s to come with the bands full length release then we are all going to be in for a treat. The tracks reminded me of old school Gun’s N’ Roses but with a modern spin. “Other Side” was a personal favorite of mine as the track is a great all around rock tune that has a really great groove.

For free you really can’t go wrong downloading this EP. A lot of bands these days are releasing tracks for free and a lot of times there’s a reason they do so. Each of the 3 tracks contained on “The Other Side” are great representations of what the band has to offer.

Track Listing:
1.) Evil Eyes
2.) It Ain’t Easy
3.) Other Side

Interview with Marcia Gay Harden

Marcia Gay Harden is an Academy Award winner from her amazing performance in “Pollock” with Ed Harris. She also stole the show with her performance in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River”. She is currently co-starring in TNT’s Saturday Mystery Night’s movie called “Scott Turow’s Innocent” airing on November 29th. Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Marcia Gay Harden about her role as well as what she has planned next.

Mike Gencarelli: I was wondering, were you familiar or had you read any of Scott Turow’s books beforehand?
Marcia Gay Harden: I had read “Innocent” previously and another one.  I always try to read the literature first before I see the piece, so I have my own ideas. I get really excited by his writing and also by the rhythm of his writing and mystery. The more information you have…it deals like pick-up sticks where you try to carefully extract one stick without unbalancing the others. That’s what the characters seem to be doing, but the audience is involved in the ascension. So to pick up with this one in part two, it was very exciting to see where they had come because now each pick up stick is bent and twisted and full of the file they’ve lived for 20 years and another crime is committed.

MG: How do you connect with the character?  Is there something about her that you felt a familiarity to or something that really touched on you with this character?
MGH: Well, I felt that his writing. Scott Turow’s writing allowed for a great exploration into the mental illness that she suffered and the repression that she lived through and also Rusty, her husband, lived through.  He had repressed her crime from “Innocent”, part one for now 20 years and her behavior doesn’t become erratic again until she’s revisited by the same event. Once he commits another infidelity and then the lack of a distorted reality is created by his lies and cheating. She responds with the typical behaviors of her bipolar mess which was really interesting study for me that was. I found that a fascinating journey of discovery to understand what effect that has on people, on women, on people who live with betrayal. Whether it’s in a business or in a home, to expect sanity is a very tall order I think.  It doesn’t forgive it, but it’s an odd expectation to expect someone to behave in a certain way when they’re actually experiencing some of the most devastating moments of their life.

MG: There’s kind of a lot of mystery surrounding your character.  She seems kind of unpredictable.  How did you kind of prepare for the role?
MGH: I studied.  I did research.  She’s unpredictable in that she has a mental illness and there’s a lot written about borderline and bipolar and post-traumatic stress and all of those so she’s unpredictable in that way.  In fact, with her medication, she’s very predictable.  No judgment on whether the life or the marriage is what it should be, but she seems to be contained and this event throws her off balance. I think in the telling of the story, you jump back and forth in flashbacks and Mike has put the anger of the night of the death at the very beginning.  So I hope that people were able to understand that that is what she had come to, but that the other behaviors, having dinner parties, making lunches, sending her kid off on the bicycle, hovering yes, overbearing possibly, but not crazy.

MG: You said that you were familiar with the novel prior to working on the film, how do you feel that Mike Robe’s screenplay kind of works off the novel?
MGH: I feel like he did it very well given that there are certain ways of telling the story that can’t mimic the book.  You get Rusty’s perspective much more than where the book gives you the mistress’ perspective and Callard, the son’s perspective.  I thought it was super interesting that you don’t get Barbara’s perspective because if you think that Barbara killed herself, the only way you would know for sure is if you get her perspective. So in the book, I thought that’s interesting Scott Turow didn’t give you the one. She’s the only one who can tell you if she did it or not.  So I thought that was interesting and at the end of the day, I was not necessarily convinced and I didn’t need to be convinced that the story ended as both Scott and the director tell you it did because you don’t know unless she tells you that it did.

MG: Bonnie Bedelia played the same character in the movie “Presumed Innocent”, did you avoid it so as not to influence your take on it?
MGH: I had seen it years and years ago when it first came out. So I didn’t feel the need to revisit that beautiful performance, but what I did was revisit the book and revisit the character’s behavior. That way I could remind myself of 20 years ago, what were her desires, what were her needs, what was her jealousy and her rage.  What did that look like?

MG: When you get a script like this or any other script, is writing the only thing that you look for when you decide whether you’re going to accept it or not?
MGH: I think it’s as random as what clothing do I put on in the morning.  Really it is.  It’s based on what my needs are for the week, for the month, for the year, what I’m feeling like on the day.  What is the story trying to say?  What does the character say?  What does it pay?  Where does it shoot?  Can I still make the kids’ Christmas play if I do this and how can I work it out?  It is very random.

MG: What do you have planned next?
MGH: I just did a week on Body of Proof with Dana Delaney. I also just shot on a beautiful little independent film called “The Summer of Wine and Roses”, playing an acting teacher.  It was so much fun.  I believe there’s a film called “If I Were You” that’s coming out that I did and another one, there’s just a couple of films coming out, but it’s been a period of some change.  We’ve moved out to California and there’s some family needs I’m taking care of so it’s, I can’t give you laundry list of big films, but soon enough.

Interview with Sonny Chiba

Sonny Chiba is the legendary Japanese actor, producer, director and martial artist. Sonny recently appeared as Hattori Hanzo in “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” and is appearing in the new film “Sushi Girl”. Media Mikes had the chance to ask Sonny a few questions, with the help of “Sushi Girl” producer Neal Fischer, about his new film and his amazing career.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us about your character, the Mysterious Sushi Chef, and his role in the film “Sushi Girl”?
Sonny Chiba: If I told you that, it would not be a mystery any longer… Where’s the fun in that?

MG: How did you become involved with this project?
SC: I am a close personal friend with Neal Fischer and the other producers of Sushi Girl (Destin Pfaff, Kern Saxton and Suren Seron). Neal asked me if I would like to be in Sushi Girl and I asked him if I got to kill anyone on screen. His answer to me is top secret, but I told him if they got me a ticket, I’d be in their movie. And here we are.

MG: How was it working with Mark Hamill and Tony Todd, as well as the rest of the cast in this film?
SC: They are wonderful people and talented actors and I wish I got to work with them more. Unfortunately we were mostly on set at different times. Then my stay was cut short when we had the big Tsunami disaster in Japan, so we finished my final scenes and I caught the first flight home.

MG: How do you compare working on “Sushi Girl” to your role of Hattori Hanzo in “Kill Bill, Vol.1”
SC: I love acting, love martial arts and love marrying the two on film. I am always grateful to be on set and working with amazing people. Both were wonderful experiences.

MG: Which do you enjoy more working behind the camera or in front of the camera?
SC: Both! They are two sides of the same blade. Everything is connected. There is a right time for everything and I enjoy it all. Recently I have really been enjoying writing. I can go have dinner and suddenly get the urge to write and just stay there all night. I write on whatever I can get a hold of (paper, napkin, etc.) and then forget to eat the meal I ordered.

MG: How do you feel that character Takuma Tsurugi from “The Street Fighter” holds up in terms of toughness in today’s films?
SC: Oh “toughness” is very different these days. And I am very happy that fans today are still as excited about The Street Fighter series and Tsurugi (my character) as ever. So I think he holds up perfectly.

MG: If they ever remade “The Street Fighter” in the US, who would you want to see in the lead role?
SC: Hmmm… I think more about the films that haven’t been made yet. I have several film projects of my own that need to be made and they will have a good amount of that “toughness” you asked about before. Look for news about them in the near future

MG: How do you feel about “Golgo 13” in talks to be remade into another live-action film?
SC: Words cannot express my joy! “Golgo 13” is one of my all time favorites and is filled with amazing and edgy stories, all written and illustrated by Takao Saito. As you know, I played Golgo, the top international assassin of the world in the 1977 version, so it is very close to my heart. Golgo is not a simple two-dimensional character. And he is mysterious too! I was so overwhelmed and excited to hear from Neal that his boss, Samuel Hadida (Davis Films) obtained the rights recently. Since I know “Golgo” is in good hands, it is time for another live-action film.

MG: Are you looking forward to seeing “Samurai Reincarnation” on the big screen again at Singafest awards event?
SC: I am! I haven’t seen the film in a long time and it was directed by my good friend Kinji Fukasaku. Singafest is also presenting me with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event. My sons (Makenyu & Gordon) will demonstrate karate then my daughter (Juri Manase) and I will do a demonstration with swords.

MG: Do you have any future plans to direct or act as fight choreographer in the near future?
SC: Yes. As I said, I have several project that I’m excited about. I have just signed a four-picture deal with Assembly Line. The first I will be co-starring with Tony Todd in the action drama “Bushido”. All of them are based on my original stories and I will be very active both behind and in front of the camera. So I am very excited for that and then following that we will have three more action projects. So keep an eye out!

Fish has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Blu-ray Review “Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series”

Actors: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill
Number of discs: 6
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: BBC
Run Time: 585 minutes

Overall Score: 5 out of 5 stars

This series is definitely one of the best of the new reboot. The story line is very intense and if I say it “ballsy”. In the first episode of the series, they “kill off” The Doctor…that takes some guts. Of course they only reveal little bits until the finale, but it is done so well that it leaves your mouth watering for more each episode. I feel that Matt Smith is just such an amazing Doctor. His mannerisms are just so unique and he really dives deep into the role. I can’t wait to see what is going to be happen with the seventh series.

This complete series set comes with all 13 episodes from series six and even includes last year’s Christmas episode “A Christmas Carol”. The special features on this release is really worth the purchase alone though. There are five “Night and the Doctor” recorded scenes exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray.  There are five special episode prequels.  There are two sketches recorded for the UK’s Comic Relief charity event.  Since “Doctor Who” has the best monsters, you can find out about the Doctor’s most challenging opponents in four different “Monster Files”.  I am a big fan of “Doctor Who Confidential” and there is an inside look includes for each episode.  There is also fantastic audio commentary available on a few episodes. So obviously if you are fan of the series, the purchase of this Blu-ray is a no-brainer!

Synopsis: The 6-disc set combines all 13 episodes of the new season from award-winning lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat (Sherlock, The Adventures of Tintin), along with the 2010 Holiday Special, A Christmas Carol, starring Harry Potter’s Michael Gambon, plus hours of bonus features. The series follows the adventures of the Doctor, a mysterious traveler who journeys throughout all of time and space, picking up companions along the way. ©BAFTA nominee Matt Smith (the Doctor), Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), Arthur Darvill (Rory) and Alex Kingston (River Song) are back when the Doctor faces his date with death and learns a lot more about the mysterious River Song. Guest stars include Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Notting Hill), supermodel Lily Cole (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), James Corden (Gavin & Stacey,The History Boys), and David Walliams (Little Britain, Come Fly With Me). Catch a surprise appearance by NBC’s Meredith Vieira in the series finale as well as Michael Sheen (The Twilight Saga, Midnight in Paris), who voices a character in Neil Gaiman’s episode and Imelda Staunton (Cranford, Vera Drake), who voices a character in Tom MacRae’s episode. Executive producers are Piers Wenger (Upstairs Downstairs, Ashes to Ashes) and Beth Willis (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes). Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1, Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 2 and Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol are also available for purchase separately on DVD and Blu-ray.

The hugely popular complete sixth season of Doctor Who is available Nov. 22 on Blu-ray and DVD at http://bit.ly/rN2cf5
