PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is coming to mobile!

Tencent Releasing PUBG for Mobile

On November the 27th, Tencent, the Chinese tech company announced that it will be co-developing an official mobile version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, PUBG, by means of a partnership with the South Korean developer of the game, Bluehole.

Announcement is One Week after Tencent Won Exclusive Publishing Rights

This announcement came a week after the company revealed that it had won the exclusive publishing and distribution rights for the game in China. Tencent managed to secure both of these deals despite a previous notice from watchdogs of the Chinese media stating that PUBG and similar survival-themed games were unlikely to obtain a licence to officially be launched in China. Unlike the kind of entertainment the average online NZ casino delivers, these games are full of blood and gore, you see.

Tencent is Making Waves

Tencent is a tech giant with a portfolio which includes the most popular social network in China, WeChat, and the company briefly surpassed Facebook in terms of market value recently. It became the world’s fifth-largest publicly traded company! Thank to a number of recent acquisitions, it is also the owner of other well-liked gaming titles, with the biggest of these including League of Legends and Clash of Clans.

PUBG is the Hottest Game of 2017

PUBG has managed to sell over 20 million copies worldwide, a feat which ranks it easily as the hottest video game of this year. At its apex, the survival/shooter game had almost two million players online concurrently, a fact which saw it set a new record on Steam, the gaming platform. The idea behind the game is akin to the plot of the popular film Hunger Games. Players get parachuted onto an island, and have to scavenge for weapons. These range from frying pans through to AK-47s, and players then battle one another until only one remains.

PUBG’s Appeal will Broaden Thanks to Mobile

The game getting adapted from its PC version, which is generally the realm belonging to hard-core game players, to a mobile one will definitely work to broaden its appeal, and will no doubt see it gaining traction amongst more casual mobile players. In China, mobile games which have been adapted from PC versions have gone on to become big success recently.

Copycat Games are Becoming Available, Too

PUBG’s wild popularity has gone on to inspire a number of copycat games, with the most prominent of these being mobile titles from Xiaomi and NetEase. Tencent also has plans to launch its very own clone for mobile gadgets, even as it is working to bring the original game to smartphones.

The key differentiator of these copycat games is the way they work around the problem of censorship in China. In October of this year, the official video-copyright body for this country stated that these types of survival games run against the core socialist values of China, and that they are probably harmful to the mental health of young people. In Wildness Action, a game by NetEase, for example, red banners replete with Communist Party slogans are displayed everywhere, hanging from buildings and bridges for gamers to take in while they play.

“The Godfather” and “The Godfather: Part II” Coming to Kansas City

Talk about how times have changed! In 1972, thanks in part to several members of a pro Italian-American group, Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Godfather” spent opening day playing to an empty theatre in Kansas City. According to Thomas Gialde, vice president of the Italian-American Unification Council of Greater Kansas City at the time, his group “strongly oppose a kind of prejudice the picture can cause.” He made these comments to reporters in the lobby of the Empire theatre.

Four decades later, the film, as well as it’s Oscar winning sequel, return to the scene of the crime. These days the Empire is better known as the Kansas City Alamo Drafthouse and this Sunday, September 7, the Alamo is presenting a double-feature performance of both films, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are just $15.00

Nominated for a combined (22) Academy Awards and winner of (9) Oscars, including (2) for Best Picture, “The Godfather” and “The Godfather: Part II” are still considered, forty-years after their release, to among the greatest American films ever made. If you haven’t seen them on the big screen here is your chance!

Patty Duke and “The Miracle Worker” Coming to Omaha!

If it’s May, you can rely on two things: the start of the summer movie season and another great Bruce Crawford produced film event in Omaha, Nebraska.

On May 23rd film historian Crawford will host his 34th Classic Film Tribute, presenting 1962’a Academy Award winning film, “The Miracle Worker.” Joining Crawford this evening will be the film’s co-star, Patty Duke. This special event is a benefit for the Omaha Parks Foundation and will be held on Friday, May 23rd at the Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge Street in Omaha, Nebraska. The event begins at 7:00 p.m.

Based on the play by William Gibson, “The Miracle Worker” tells the story of young Helen Keller (Duke), born deaf and blind, and her relationship with her teacher, Anne Sullivan (Anne Bancroft). Nominated for five Academy Awards, the film won two Oscars: Bancroft for Best Actress and Duke as Best Supporting Actress. At age 16 Duke became, at the time, the youngest person to win a competitive Academy Award and today she remains the third youngest, behind 10 year old Tatum O’Neal and 11 year old Anna Paquin. Ms. Duke has also won two Golden Globes and three Emmys, including one for portraying Anne Sullivan in a 1979 television version of “The Miracle Worker.”

As with other events, artist Nicolosi has designed a commemorative U.S. Postal Envelope honoring the film which will be unveiled at the event. Also, sculptor Susan Woodford and artist Anne Nye will display their metal and stained glass creations.

Tickets for this special event are $22.00 and can purchased at the customer service counter at any Omaha-area Hy Vee Food Store. For more information call 402-926-8299 or visit www.omahafilmevent.com

Book Review “The Sun’s Coming Up… Like A Big Bald Head” by Norman Reedus

Photographs by: Norman Reedus
“The Sun’s Coming Up… Like A Big Bald Head”
Hardcover Limited Edition
Release Date: October 31, 2013

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love Norman Reedus right now? The guy already had a huge cult following from his work on “The Boondock Saints” films, then he went and did a little show called “The Walking Dead”. Now he is a fan favorite on the show and has a much larger worldwide following. What people might not know about Reedus is that besides just being an actor, he is also a director and a photographer.

When I interviewed Reedus (before his “The Walking Dead” fandom) back in 2010 and he went into detail on his work with with photography, paintings and sculptures. Shortly after that I went through his work, some of which is also included now in this book, and really enjoyed it. His work is very impressive and also quite unique but if you know Reedus then you see catch on to his vision throughout it. I have to admit, I am not an art critic. I do not have an artistic eye. But I would like to think that I have a pretty decent appreciation for photography and art.

“The Sun’s Coming Up… Like A Big Bald Head” comes in a very sharp looking limited-edition collector’s volume hardcover book. The photographs by Norman Reedus are very artistic and takes on anhauntingly intimate journey through the dark and sublime.” The journey through this book is definitely dark and quite out there but also very effective. Some of the images left me a little taken back and yet still couldn’t take my eyes of them. Some are very high quality and some are low quality, which is all done on purpose encompass his artistic goal.

This book is going to have a prominent place on our coffee table since I think it will be a great conversation piece for sure. In the back of the book there is a sort of index of all the images with a title for each and where they were taken. After looking through the book once I was immediately compelled to take a second deeper look and reference the back index for each photo. Overall a very strange yet interesting trip and I look forward to spreading the word. Highly recommend for any fan of photography and art…and of course fan of Norman Reedus.
