Blu-Ray Review “The Hour: Series 1”

Created by: Abi Morgan
Starring, Dominic West, Romola Garai and Ben Whishaw
Original channel: BBC Two
No. of episodes: 6
Run Time: 360 minutes

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

I have not heard of this show until it showed up on my door to review. The only program I watch on BBC is “Doctor Who” but boy, I am glad I had the chance to review this series. The only problem I had with this series is that it is only a six part series like most shows on BBC. I would have loved to see more of this show but don’t worry it is confirmed for a second series. The combination of music, acting and fast dialogue makes this show very interesting. Not only that but it is also funny, it is romantic and it is suspenseful..you can expect that and more within “The Hour” (pun intended).

The series is a period drama set in 1956, it generally follows three people Freddie Lyon (Ben Whishaw), Hector Madden (Dominic West) and Bel Rowley (Romola Garai) as they set out to start a news program called “The Hour”. Hector is the face of the show, Bel is the producer and Freddie is the heart and its driving force. Freddie is trying to investigate the mystery behind the death of his friend, which delves a lot deeper into government conspiracies that he expects.  The trio are also involved in this love triangle is starts subtle and then explodes as the series goes on.  They push the limits with their news as they are under constant watch from the government since they are in times of war.  How far will they go to report the news and who/what will get in their way?

The cast is so phenomonal lead by Ben Whishaw, which is just stunning to watch on the screen and captures you with every word spoken.  Dominic West is such an amazing actor and really shines in this role.  I had the pleasure of meeting him in over 10 years ago before he hit it big with “The Wire” and he is just such a lovely person. Romola Garai is also fantastic playing the strong woman, yet in dire need of love, producer.  She is just so emotionally charged in this series and especially with the events from the finale, I can’t wait to see where her character goes.

Also a must to note is the music, it is so fantastic. It has a noir feel and helps with pacing each episode so well. The picture is fantastic and the sound is superb on Blu-ray. I wish I could say the same for the extras though since they are in SD not HD and there are only two features. The first is a behind the scenes, which runs about 10 minutes and takes a look into the making the series for i.e. it’s production design and cinematography. I did really enjoy the extra “Creating The Hour”, which runs about 20 minutes, which is also a behind the scenes making-of feature. It focuses a lot of the concept of the show and its characters.

Synopsis:
Set behind the scenes of the BBC newsroom, just as an investigative news program is launched, the drama plots the personal lives, professional interplay and jealous ambition between aspiring but renegade journalist Freddie Lyon (Whishaw), the beautiful ambitious young producer Bel Rowley (Garai) with whom he is in love, and his handsome rival Hector Madden (West), the face and lead anchorman of this rising television news team. The Hour plays out as a riveting thriller set against the backdrop of the Cold War.

Viewers witness the decade on the threshold of change – from the ruthless sexual politics behind the polite social façade of the ‘50s to the revelations that redefined the world for a new generation. Over the six episodes, the interplay and intense ambitions between the rising news team plays out against the backdrop of a mysterious murder and Freddie’s controversial and dangerous investigation.

“How To Be a Gentleman” Interview Series

CBS’ new show “HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN”, inspired by the book of the same name, is a comedy about the unlikely friendship between a traditional, refined writer and an unrefined personal trainer. Andrew Carlson (David Hornsby) is an etiquette columnist whose devotion to ideals from a more civilized time has lead to a life detached from modern society. Infectiously optimistic, Bert Lansing (Kevin Dillon) is a reformed “bad boy” from Andrew’s past who inherited a fitness center, but can still be rude, loud and sloppy. When Andrew’s editor, Jerry (Dave Foley), tells him to put a modern, sexy twist on his column or be fired, he hires Bert as a life coach in the hopes of learning to be less “gentle man” and more “real man.” Andrew’s mom, Diane (Nancy Lenehan), and his bossy sister, Janet (Mary Lynn Rajskub), support the plan, as would Janet’s husband, Mike (Rhys Darby), if he was allowed to have an opinion. Though Andrew and Bert’s views may be centuries apart, they may find they’re each other’s missing link. David Hornsby (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), Adam Chase (“Friends”), Ted Schachter (“The Invention of Lying”) are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

“Final Destination 5” Interview Series

If you are a fan of the series then you are probably dying (not literally) to see this film.  If you are not a fan of this series then you need to get on board because even though this is the 5th film in the series, it has definitely not lost its steam.  “The Final Destination” was released in 2009 and was the first film in the series to be shot and released in 3D.  That was a turning point for this series, since the format seems to be made for 3D.  “Final Destination 5” continues to bring the terror and excitement that is known from this series.  It doesn’t seems like there is an end in sight any time soon for this series yet…Tony Todd has revealed in an interview that if the film is a success, it is possible we will be seeing “Final Destination 6” and “Final Destination 7” as well.

The story is similar than its predecessors, Sam Lawton, (Nicholas D’Agosto) and he co-workers are heading on a retreat for work and he has a premonition that the suspension bridge they are on will collapse. As the vision becomes reality, Sam and his friends discovers that Death is still after them and they need to race to survive. The film stars Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, David Koechner, Courtney B. Vance, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, Ellen Wroe, P.J. Byrne and Tony Todd. With a repo order in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other, these bulky Sicilians never hesitate to take jobs other companies can’t handle, from massive construction equipment to luxury yachts at the Jersey shore to an entire fleet of racecars. They always get the goods, and they never miss a meal. Bear Swamp Recovery comes to truTV from Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment.

Hulk Hogan’s MCW – New series premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
Hulk Hogan, one of the legendary stars of pro wrestling, believes you need to start small if you want to win big. Currently airing Wednesdays at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), Franklin & Bash ranks as one of basic cable’s top new series of the summer. Franklin & Bash is produced by Four Sycamore Productions, Left Coast Productions and FanFare Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television, with Jamie Tarses, Kevin Falls and Bill Chais serving as executive producers. Blu-Ray Review “Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1”

Starring: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill
Original channel: BBC One/America
Premiered: 23 April 2011
Episodes: 7 out of 13 from Series 6
Running Time: 45 minutes per episode

Series 6, Part 1: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1.5 out of 5 stars

I think series five with Matt Smith coming on board as The Doctor was a good kicking off point, but the show really finds its mark with series six. I think that Matt Smith is really what The Doctor needs to be…awkward, goofy and out of this world (no pun intended). The addition of adding Arthur Darvill on as a traveling partner for The Doctor and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) is great and adds a lot for Amy’s character. This set consists of the first seven episodes and really leaves you wanting more.

I have been watching Doctor Who for a while and it is always great.  There is definitely something deeper about this season, whether it is darker or more mysterious but it really has been drawn in.  Maybe it is the shows migration over in the United States, but overall this season really packs a punch.  Watching the episodes on Blu-ray is a huge improvement from BBC America since they were not in HD.  The episodes looks fantastic and the colors are so enthralling.  The sound packs a terrific DTS-HD High Resolution 5.1, which is similar to the past “Doctor Who” releases. Overall an definitely purchase for us “Doctor Who” fans

Unfortunately after a great season, you expect great extras but included on the 2-disc Blu-ray edition are only two featurettes called “Monster Files”. They run 24 minutes and provide an overview of some of the aliens, monsters and creatures that appear in series six.  So fingers crossed that Part 2 of Series 6 really delivers in the extras.

On July 19, the first part of the new acclaimed season of “Doctor Who” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD, with the release of Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1.

About the Blu-ray/DVD:
Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1, a two-disc DVD and Blu-ray set, contains the first seven episodes along with two Monster files, “The Gangers” and “The Silence,” two of the Doctor’s most challenging opponents.

In the season opener, “The Impossible Astronaut,” four envelopes are received, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but in TARDIS blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor (Smith), Amy (Gillan), Rory (Darvill) and River Song (Kingston) in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor’s friends must never reveal to him. ‘Space 1969’ is their only clue, as their quest lands them – quite literally – in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton (Mark Sheppard) in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.

Following the two-parter, the Doctor, Amy and Rory journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard Avery’s (Bonneville) pirate ship to solve the mystery of the Siren (Cole). In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape. And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon’s Run, and the Doctor’s darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord’s soul? Only two things are certain. Silence will fall. And a good man is going to die…

“The Human Centipede” Interview Series

Truly one-of-a-kind, Tom Six’s twisted biological horror film “The Human Centipede” confidently goes where few films have dared to go. The sick vision of a demented surgeon, a role portrayed so brilliantly by Dieter Laser it is sure to join Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface in the horror pantheon, is a 100% medically accurate nightmare.

Premise for “The Human Centipede”:
During a stopover in Germany in the middle of a carefree roadtrip through Europe, two American girls find themselves alone at night when their car breaks down in the woods. Searching for help at a nearby villa, they are wooed into the clutches of a deranged retired surgeon who explains his mad scientific vision to his captives’ utter horror. They are to be the subjects of his sick lifetime fantasy: to be the first to connect people, one to the next, via their gastric system, and in doing so bring to life ‘the human centipede’.

Fans of the first film can rejoice that Tom Six has already completed the second film in the series titled “The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)”, which has been scheduled for release on DVD in 2011 but was refused a classification for distribution in the UK due to its explicit content.
