Number of discs: 2

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: June 17, 2014

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

Rusty Nail has really become a great icon in the horror world. He is not at the level of Freddy Krueger but he definitely kicks some ass. I am sure this wasn’t planned (I hope) but since the death of Paul Walker (who starred in the first “Joyride”) was only a few months ago, it feels a little odd for this to be coming out right now. After the terrible follow up “Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead”, “Joy Ride 3: Road Kill” is action-packed, entertains and is worth checking out if you enjoy this character and the series.

Official Premise: This third hellish installment in the bloody series finds director Declan O’Brien in the driver’s seat for another deadly detour. The nightmare begins when a group of young street racers take a desolate shortcut on their way to the Road Rally 1000. But a chance encounter with Rusty soon turns deadly as he stalks, taunts, and tortures his next victims with deranged delight. It’s a full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal chill ride packed with killer twists and turns!

Fox is releasing this film as a combo pack with a Blu-ray, DVD and Ultraviolet Digital Copy. It is also releasing it with a Limited Edition Killer Packaging. The 1080p transfer and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track works for what the film is, which is a low-budget gritty horror sequel. There are some decent special features including some Pre-Vis Sequences. “Road Rage: The Blood, Sweat and Gears of Joy Ride 3” is a look into the production. “Riding Shotgun with Declan: Director’s DIE-aries” is a chat with the director Declan O’Brien. Lastly, we have a featurette “Finding Large Marge” and an audio commentary track.

Monte A. Melnick talks about his book “On the Road with The Ramones” and 40th Anniversary of the band

Monte A. Melnick worked with the legendary band The Ramones since the group’s inception in 1974 and served as the group’s tour manager up until the bands last show in 1996. Monte’s book “On the Road with The Ramones” which was co-wrote with Kevin Meyer and released in 2007 garnered rave reviews and has gone on to be released in several other languages. Media Mikes had the chance to speak with Monte recently about his time with the band, the success of his book and the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Ramones formation.

Adam Lawton: How did you initially start working with the Ramones?
Monte A. Melnick: I grew up with Tommy Ramone and we went to school together. We had also played in bands with one another along with setting up studios with each other. I was there at the very beginning when Tommy first got involved with the Ramones and that’s really how I became involved with them as well.

AL: Were you still looking to be in a band at this time or were you looking to move more towards the management side of the business?
MM: By this time Tommy and I had already built Performance Studios and we were also managing it. While doing all of that we still had time for our own bands and my band Thirty Days Out put out two records on Reprise Records in 1971 and 1972. Tommy had his own stuff going on at the same time as well but he was mostly doing engineering. When it started Tommy was really only looking to produce the Ramones however after a couple showcases they couldn’t find a drummer and Tommy ended up becoming the drummer. Eventually the studio had to close down because of noise problems and the Ramones started to get jobs here and there and they asked me to go along with them. Sometimes when there’s a fork in the road you just have to take it and that’s how I transitioned.

AL: What was your first impression of the Ramones?
MM: When I first saw them I was playing in bands that did three part harmonies and had already done some album work myself. At the beginning the band was incredibly raw. I didn’t like them.  They had to develop and grow which took them awhile. That wasn’t my kind of music to start with but working with them and watching them develop I got used to it and they grew on me.

AL: What was it like dealing with Johnny and some of the
other stronger personalities in the group on a daily basis?
MM: John was a difficult personality however he kept everyone in line and was very good at that. John had a very good business sense. We weren’t really friends but we were co-workers. I was more friends with Joey and the other guys as John kept to himself around me. Its part of the tour manager’s job to be able to not only handle the personalities of the band but also those of the crew as well. The tour manager has double the people he has to account for. That was a big part of the reason I wrote the book was to show both sides of what I was dealing with on a daily basis.

AL: Did you notice a big shift in the band with the addition of members like Marky, CJ and Richie?
MM: Most of the changes that happened were very good. There have been eight different Ramones but basically the members dealt with the changes and tried integrating the new members as best as possible. Guys like CJ filled some remarkably big shoes helped elevate the band to the next level. Richie was another guy that was a great addition to the band as he wrote songs and sang. It was terrific. Sadly he left on a bad note which I have the whole story about that in my book.

AL: How did the idea for your book “On the Road with the Ramones” initially come about?
MM: People kept coming to me and telling me to write a book. I’m not a writer so I didn’t think there was any way I was going to do something like this. Joey had released a solo album on Sanctuary records and at the time they were doing publishing as well. They dragged me in to this thing and gave me a ghost writer by the name of Frank Meyer. Frank was a huge fan of the band and is a great writer so when he came in things just fell in to place and I ended up giving him a co-writing credit because he did such a great job. When we started I didn’t know how things were going to turn out. I submitted around 250 images for the book and they all made it in which is very rare for a biography. I have a room full of stuff and they let me put in all of this stuff. The book had a great art director so when you look at the pages everything just flows together. I am very happy how it turned out.

AL: Do you have plans to release another update anytime soon for your book?
MM: I have done one update already so fans who haven’t got the book yet will want to make sure they get the updated version as it has everything in there. Lately I have been focusing on releasing the book in different languages. We are currently working on our 7th language right now which is going to be in Italian. It’s great to be able to spread the book out around the whole world.

AL: With a lot of the recent commercialization of the band do you feel they would still be around today recording and touring had Dee Dee, Johnny and Joey not passed away?
MM: I think it’s great that stuff like the t-shirts and what not is available. The Ramones were never against commercialization which is why they tried so many different producers. They wanted to make money. The band just tried so hard to make it through out their career. After Joey’s death, the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and then Johnny and Dee Dee’s deaths the Ramones have become bigger than ever. If the Ramones were this big when I was working with them I would have gotten a raise. (Laughs) They are iconic and it’s a shame that they all can’t see this.  I think if they were all around and in good health they still would be playing. They probably would have played passed 1996 just how far though I don’t know. Joey was not in the greatest of health at the time they decided to call it quits and Johnny figured if Joey wasn’t going to be in good health then he would quit also while he was ahead. They had tons of offers to keep the band going.

AL: Looking back on the bands 40 years of existence/history what is your fondest memory and have there been any talks of a 40th anniversary celebration?
MM: That’s another reason I wrote the book was to tell all of those fond and not so fond memories. There was a lot of stuff going on during 22 years on the road. I loved traveling and seeing the world. After awhile the band got big enough to where traveling became comfortable because in the beginning it was not always the easiest. I miss being out there and experiencing all of the different cultures. As for celebrations I haven’t heard of anything yet. Joey’s brother Mickey has his Birthday Bashes in New York and Linda, Johnny’s wife has her thing in Los Angeles at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Dee Dee is buried and they have the statue of John. I am not sure what else they could really do.

Kevin Sorbo talks about new films “God’s Not Dead” & “Revelation Road 3: The Black Rider”

Kevin Sorbo is know best for his roles in “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”, “Andromeda” and “Kull the Conqueror”. Media Mikes had a chance to ask Kevin a few questions about his upcoming films “God’s Not Dead” and “Revelation Road 3: The Black Rider”.

Mike Gencarelli: What drew you to this film, “God’s Not Dead”?
Kevin Sorbo: It’s always the story. Great script, wonderful characters, fantastic message!

MG: How did you prepare to play a character like Professor Radisson?
KS: I have atheist friends. I have many conversations with them about my faith, their non belief. I have had college professors like him and have met with other college students who have had the same experience.

MG: In the film you push your students to admit god is dead; did that clash with your religious beliefs?
KS: Not at all. I’m acting. There are certain things I would be uncomfortable with as an actor and wouldn’t do, but the message here is great and needs to be brought to the light.

MG: Big “Duck Dynasty” fan, did you get a chance to meet The Robertsons during filming?
KS: They were brought in a year after we finished shooting, so we never met.

MG: You are currently shooting “Revelation Road 3: The Black Rider”, tell us what we can expect?
KS: A whacky ride into a post apocalyptic world where mad max meets the final chapter of the bible. Just had a fun, crazy character to play. No redeeming qualities in him really, but that remains to be seen with hints he may be back for other “Revelation Road” movies.

MG: Lastly tell us about your current Kickstarter campaign for the film “Survivor”?
KS: Sci-fi movie where I play the captain of a ship that had to leave earth decades ago when world war destroyed it. We answer the distress beacon of another planet and all hell breaks loose upon our arrival. Movie is shot and is looking for more money to wrap up post production.

2014 Olympics’ Road to Sochi hits Times Square in NYC

Nearly one hundred days ago, New York City hosted the Road to Sochi, an event celebrating the lead up to the 22nd Winter Olympics. The event, held in Times Square, boasted several activities that fans could take part in, including an autograph signing with some members of the US team, a small luge run, and numerous trivia and sport simulations. In an area best known for its throngs of tourists, Olympic fans could even watch live sport demonstrations, including hockey, curling, skiing, and snowboarding down a ramp placed right in the middle of the square.

Now, the world looks towards the beginning of the Winter Olympics- this year taking place in Sochi, Russia. The first events (Ladiesʼ Moguls Qualification in Freestyle Skiing, Team Pairs Short Program and Team Mensʼ Short Program in Figure Skating, and Mensʼ and Ladiesʼ Slopestyle Qualification in Snowboarding) will begin Thursday, February 6th. The Olympic Opening Ceremony will take place the following day, on Friday, in the brand new Fisht Stadium in Sochiʼs Olympic Park.

This Winter Olympics has seemed plagued with numerous concerns from environmental standards and potential terrorist threats to budgeting questions, lodging, and construction problems. These issues are all more than enough for one country to handle, and thatʼs not even taking into account the questions of human and animal rights violations, as well as Russiaʼs continued targeting and attacks on the LGBT community. President Obama will not be attending the Games, instead sending an Olympic delegation that is set to include three openly gay athletes. But in a lead up to the Olympics that has seen its share of controversies and concerns, the United States will place its hopes of success in its 230 athletes. 98 gold medals will be given out between February 6-23, which will include twelve new events, many previously seen in the X Games, in the hopes that their addition will add something new and fresh to the Games. Seven countries will be sending athletes to a Winter Olympics for the first time.

The United States is expected to fare well, being among the projected top countries along with Norway, Germany, and Canada. The 2014 Sochi Olympics will be shown on NBC.

Blu-ray Review “On The Road”

Actors: Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley
Directors: Walter Salles
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: MPI HOME VIDEO
Release Date: August 6, 2013
Run Time: 124 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1/2 out of 5 stars

One thing that “On the Road” doesn’t fall short of is amazing talent. This film is jam-packed with a great cast including Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, and Terrence Howard. Since the film is very character driven, they all come together very well. I am surprised it took this long to get this film out there since it was shot back in 2010 but it was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and named one of the 10 Best Films of 2012. The film is directed by Walter Salles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) and is based on the iconic 1957 novel by Jack Kerouac. This is the first time that Kerouac’s novel has been brought to the big screen and it is definitely worth the wait. If you are looking for a well-acted and directed rebellious road movie then you should dig “On the Road” quite a bit.

Official Premise: ON THE ROAD tells the timeless story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley, “Byzantium”), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of charming ex-con Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund, “TRON: Legacy”), a free-spirited, fearless, fast-talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart, “The Twilight Saga”). Traveling cross-country, the new friends venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” – the pure essence of experience. Seeking uncharted terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounters an eclectic mix of men and women who each indelibly impact their journey toward self-discovery.

MPI is the distributor behind this Blu-ray release and they did a good job on it.  The 1080p transfer is sharp.  The locations are well represented and really lends to the film itself as a character. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks works well with the film’s ever so important dialogue and score. The only real part that I was upset with was the lack of special features.  The only extra included on the release is a theatrical trailer.  I would have loved to seen more here…maybe a commentary track from some of the amazing cast perhaps. Or what is a road movie without a crew documentary the journey, a behind-the-scenes look could have been cool as well.

Rodney Atkins Releases “take a Back Road” Today, Tuesday, Oct. 4

RODNEY ATKINS RELEASES “TAKE A BACK ROAD” TODAY, TUESDAY, OCT. 4

Fourth Studio Album Featuring Sixth Career No. 1  Single “Take A Back Road” Available on iTunes and in Stores Nationwide

Nashville, Tenn. (Tuesday, October 4, 2011) — Curb Records’ platinum-selling hit-maker Rodney Atkins has proven sometimes taking the back road pays off. After celebrating a two-week No. 1–his sixth U.S. No. 1 and second No. 1 in Canada– with “Take A Back Road,” Atkins reached the fourth largest audience at country radio since 2005 according to Nielsen. Not to mention, single sales have rung in over 600,000 at the pace of close to 40,000 per week. Today, Tuesday, October 4, Atkins releases the new album TAKE A BACK ROAD, which features additional stand-out tracks including “Cabin In The Woods,” “He’s Mine” and more, available now on iTunes and in stores nationwide. The new music video, directed by Andy Tennant, can be viewed HERE and on CMT, GAC, TCN, and more.
Teaming up once again with producer Ted Hewitt, who co-produced both the platinum “If You’re Going Through Hell,” and “It’s America,” Atkins worked hard to capture the unconventional vision he had in mind for this new release. Atkins spent hours in his home studio crafting each vocal and track–paying attention to every minor detail. It’s a process he cherishes almost as much as being onstage, and one he takes extremely seriously.
“What does it mean to follow your own path? I try to think about that a lot when I’m making an album,” Atkins explains. “To me, it’s going somewhere you’ve never been, because when you do that, you wind up seeing things that no one has seen before… which means you can paint the picture differently.”
The songs on TAKE A BACK ROAD tell the stories of the every-day middle American — from the sweetly honest battling couple who’ve drawn lines down the middle of the bed in “Feet,” to the fiercely parental pride-even-through-the-tough-times in “He’s Mine,” the tunes are chock full of the authentic emotion Atkins strives for in each and every note.
TAKE A BACK ROAD Track Listing

2.)    “He’s Mine” (Casey Beathard, Phil O’Donnell, Tim James

7.)    “Feet” (Tony Haselden, Walker Hayes)
8.)    “Cabin In The Woods” (David Lee Murphy, Jim Collins)

12.)   “Lifelines” (Rodney Atkins, Ted Hewitt, Ben Hayslip)
In celebration of today’s debut, Atkins is spending time in the place where all roads in America lead, Chicago’s Wrigley Field.  He’ll chat with press, throw some pitches with the Chicago Cubs players and even mow the field with a Massey Ferguson tractor. A small-town boy from Greenville, Tenn., Atkins has always been a huge baseball fan and avid supporter of the Cubs; and spending time outside with his 10-year-old son Elijah preparing him for his all-star games is one of his favorite past times.
Moreover, on Oct. 12, Great American Country (GAC) will give fans the chance to get an in insider’s view on Atkins’ career and the stories behind the new songs on TAKE A BACK ROAD with Origins: Rodney Atkins which premieres at 10 p.m. ET with a re-air at 2 a.m. ET.
Atkins is currently out on tour with Darius Rucker, performing for fans in arenas across the country. For a full list of dates, visit www.rodneyatkins.com.
