The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019 was the 25^th event of the E3, where the leading hardware manufacturers, publishers, and software developers in the game industry present new and upcoming products to the members of the video gaming community. It took place in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center from the 11^th to the 13^th of June, 2019. If you could not make it to the event, you can just watch the live stream on YouTube. Other platforms such as IGN might stream the event, but your best bet is YouTube. The event has been primarily sponsored in recent years by AMD and Intel, but now it is being sponsored by Epic Gaming. Epic Gaming is not the favourite of most PC gamers, but what can they do about it? Besides, a lot of gaming companies made their presence felt such as Microsoft, Nintendo, Devolver Digital, Bethesda Softworks, PC Gaming Show, Ubisoft, and Square Enix. Sony, however, held no press conference before the event.

The E3 2019 was the bomb, and it is no doubt that a lot of gaming industries flooded the event with all their latest releases in store for their fans. This is, however, interesting to notice that E3 was dominated by PC games than actual console games. This is a bit astonishing, although it is clear to every gamer that most PC games can played on the top console games, if not all, in the industry today. We might want to discuss that in full detail, but we can’t ignore the fact that Sony Computer Entertainment was going to be absent from the E3! Sony confirmed late in 2018 that they would not attend the event because (in their words) “they are looking for inventive opportunities to connect with their community”. We can’t say why the sudden decision to be absent, but we know other gaming industries were there. Several companies like Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, Nintendo, among others made some ground-breaking announcements about their newest releases and future products. This is why a lot of games were announced at the event, such Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, FIFA 2020, and much more.

Ninja Theory was one of the first developers to take center stage at E3 with their Bleeding Edge game that was unfortunately leaked a few days before E3,2019. Gearbox announced its Borderline 3 game, the highly anticipated game with slit screenplay release date is set for September 13, 2019. The new Call of Duty Modern Warfare will take you to the modern battleground with characters that just might second guess orders and let’s not forget the good news, cross-play support is happening. Cyberpunk 2077 stole the show at the E3, 2019 although its viewing was shown to a selected few behind closed door sessions. The game is set to be released in 2020, it stars Keanu Reeves and it can be completed without a single kill. Juicy details and new trailers on other PC games such as Gear 5, The Outer Worlds, Watch Dogs Legion, Outriders, Elden Ring, Marvel Avengers, Star Jedi, and Pokemon were revealed. X-box announced 60 new games while more information on the release date and features of Project Scarlett by Microsoft was revealed. One of the biggest stories that made the rounds during the E3 conference came from Square Enix. The gaming company revealed that the Final Fantasy 7 remake will be released on March 3, 2020, and it will cover on Midgar region.

There were lots of things to do besides listening and viewing new releases of several game companies. For instance, an e-sport zone was created to shine the spotlight on its gaming culture art, music and fashion. There were professional gamers, developer interviews on games such as Outer Worlds and pro-am tournaments on PURG amongst others. Epic used this opportunity to promote its Fortnite e-sport tournament. The company offered players the chance to participate in Time Trials, Player vs Player, and Arcade games at their respective stations. Epic’s free play pro-am tournament connected its Block Party and E3 activations by giving attendees the chance to compete in a Time Trial challenge to win a spot on one of the 8 competing teams. The team that won at the Block Party would be flown to New York City with a friend to watch the games biggest e-sports tournament, Fortnite World Cup Final taking place at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre (Arthur Ashe Stadium) on the 26^th to 28^th of July 2019. This tournament is no joke as there is a $30 million prize pool to be won which is slightly higher than the £20 million prize pool won at the recent Dota 2 tournament. It is going to be the largest prize pool in e-sports history and this just shows that there is a boom in the e-sport industry and the stakes will get higher as the as market grows.

In a world of delivery food, social media, online pokies and photo filters, it is nice every once in a while, to be reminded of simpler times and places. “Deadwood: The Movie,” transports us to one of those forgone times. 

It is project that’s been rumored and waited for patiently over the last decade which finally pulled into the station on Friday, May 31st, amidst the tragic news that creator David Milch is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Even if you’re not aware of the situation of the film’s creator, there’s an unexpected poignancy in every frame of “Deadwood,” but the miracle of this production is how deftly Milch and company avoid cheap theatrics and emotional manipulation as they provide a satisfingy ending to an iconic TV show. 

Befitting one of the most complex television shows of all time, it’s a rich and well paced 110 minutes of filmmaking that rewards fans without pandering to them. It is the product of someone who has been living with these characters since the show unceremoniously went off the air in 2006. 

If you Loved the TV Series….

You get the feeling that he knows everything that’s happened to them since then, and we drop in on their current lives as if they have gone on as normal while we’ve beenunable to watch. As much as fans have desperately wanted another season or movie before now, there’s something so perfect and beautiful about how this movie came out that makes you glad that it happened this way.

It’s 1889, a full ten years after the actions of  “Deadwood” season three. South Dakota is becoming a state, which means a visit to Deadwood by the villainous Senator George Hearst , who rode off at the end of season three after causing havoc and death in his typical cold hearted way. He, as always, is looking to expand his empire, trying to take land owned by Charlie Utter , and he’s particularly startled to find that his attacker Trixie, whose death was faked, is still breathing.

Meet Up with All Your Fav Characters

Meanwhile, we check in with most of the “Deadwood” familiar faces. Without too many spoilers, characters aren’t all that far from where we left them and yet there’s definitely a sense of time having passed as well. Milch is incredibly smart about how age doesn’t necessarily equate to wisdom, understanding, or drastic change. Time can mellow some antipathies, but it can harden others, and deepen emotions and resentments.

When Alma Garret returns to Deadwood and crosses paths with Seth Bullock there is both a sense of what they once had and that they’ve been happy apart. Both can be true. A vision of a content Bullock family, wife Martha and thier three new children—and seeing a grown Sophia with Alma drives this home.  Milch deftly drops in flashbacks to remind us of what these two once meant to each other, conveying how events can shape us but not always trap us. Seth and Alma moved on, but their relationship was formative. As were the events that transpired the last time that Hearst was in town.

Ten Years Later…

Every one of the performer slides back into the characters that kickstarted their careers as if they had kept them close all these years. A well turn from other long-delayed sequels or reboots in which the passage of time is barely alluded to and certainly not believable if it is. The three year run of “Deadwood” gave us one of the most talented ensembles in TV history and their acting skills allow us to belive the passage of time and real events since the end of season three.

Bullock seems more grounded, Sol & Trixie are exceddingly pregnant, Cochran has the look, feel and attitude of someone who has seen a decade of drama, Joanie has returned to her old ways due to her struggle with her emotional demons—they are familiar and yet they bring the gravity of time with them, repeating old habits without feeling like they haven’t changed or aged at all in the last decade.

And the Star of the Show is…

Well, what about Al Swearengen?!?! I’ll just say that Ian McShane’s show-stealing charatcter does not get the arc or ending that  fans might be expecting. The iconic anti-hero feels like a projection of the writer, as the movie opens with a dire diagnosis from Doc Cochran that practically sidelines the noble cuthroat. 

It’s interesting that Milch choses to turn his most outspoken, aggressive, and popular character into more of a supporting role in the film (which is not to say that McShane isn’t amazing in the film … he is), someone watching the action of the characters around him with a brooding sense that the end is near. 

And in the End

And yet “Deadwood: The Movie” is never the sentimental downer it could easily have been. But don’t expect cock-eyed optimism either. Good men die. Bad men prosper. That’s life. What feels miraculous about “Deadwood: The Movie” is how much it captures the comfortable humanity in between those two extremes. 

It feels like the product of a creator who fully understands that this is his last creation, but even he refuses to end on an easy note. There can be closure without sentimentality. Sometimes we stop bleeding when we heal. And sometimes we stop bleeding when we die.

The second season of Hulu’s hit series The Handmaid’s Tale left more than a few fans stunned when June (Elisabeth Moss) bucked her chance to escape to freedom in Canada with her baby and instead handed the infant off to Emily (Alexis Bleidel) while turning back into the world that still holds her other child hostage.

This weekend eager Handmaid’s fans finally got to see where June’s unexpected decision has lead the inhabitants of Gilead when showrunner Bruce Miller and actress Ann Dowd (“Aunt Lydia”) brought the premiere episode of the third season to New York’s BookCon.

Without going into episode spoilers, I will say what I saw went a long way in explaining why June would make such a tremendous sacrifice in that finale and the acting across the board continues to be top notch. Alexis Bleidel’s Emily in particular had me moved to tears more than once. And the BookCon crowd broke out into applause at least twice.

While the terrifying Aunt Lydia did not appear in the premiere ep, the trailers showed that she will return after Emily very literally stabbed her in back last year. Dowd, who was also nefarious in last year’s horror hit Hereditary, is delightful and warm in person and said of Lydia, “she is doing quite well…she’s very concerned” She also offered some exciting tidbits into where season three might take Aunt Lydia.

Although in the last two seasons we’ve seen almost every protagonist’s backstory, Aunt Lydia has remained a mystery. Apparently that will change in season three. Of this insight, Dowd commented that while it wasn’t exactly what she thought it would be “it’s so true to what might have went wrong.” On that change she added that whatever happened, “her life leaned toward Gilead and [to being] one of the most staunch believers of that group.” And while Dowd clearly loves playing Lydia, she joked about her inner dialogue with the character: “I say I’m disappointed with her and she says to mind my business!”

The Handmaid’s Tale returns weekly to Hulu starting Wednesday June 5th.

I had no idea that back in May of 1998, when I first snuck in to see a film in theaters called “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, that he would end up becoming one of my favorite directors and influencing my interest in film so much. Terry Gilliam has always had a lot of luck with getting his film well receptive. They are always unique and never follow the Hollywood typical bubble that every other film does. Well “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” is no different for Gilliam. This was a film that he was trying to get made for nearly three decades. If that shows nothing else it is that the guy was determined to bring this project to life no matter what. Well after it’s long journey to the world, it is definitely worth the wait.

Back in 2000, Jean Rochefort was originally cast to play Don Quixote and Toby was to be played by Johnny Depp (imagine that?!). They even made a documentary about this failed attempt called “Lost in La Mancha”, worth checking out. I have to admit thought, I am HUGE fan of Jonathan Pryce, who also collaborated with Gilliam in his film “Brazil”, another one of my favorites). Pryce nails it for me as Don Quixote. Other than Depp, the role of Sancho Panza has previously had even Robin Williams and Ewan McGregor attached before Adam Driver aka Kylo Ren in the “Star Wars” Universe. I have to admit, if I had a dream cast and out of all the people that could have played Panza Driver probably wouldn’t have been my first choice. Don’t get me wrong, he was good in the film and did the role justice but I wanted a little more from him here.

Here is the film’s official Premise: “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” is the story of Toby (Driver), a cynical advertising director, who finds himself trapped in the outrageous delusions of an old Spanish shoe-maker (Pryce) who believes himself to be Don Quixote.  In the course of their comic and increasingly surreal adventures, Toby is forced to confront the tragic repercussions of a film he made in his idealistic youth – a film that changed the hopes and dreams of a small Spanish village forever. Can Toby make amends and regain his humanity? Can Don Quixote survive his madness and imminent death? Or will love conquer all?

When I watch a Terry Gilliam directed film, you know you are going to get amazing locations, really unique set designs, wonderful costumes and simply the best cinematography. “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” delivers in all of these departments, no question. The film runs a little long for me personally and when watching it with my wife, I noticed she checked out not shortly after it started. I think I appreciated it cause you can see where all the blood, sweat and tears went into this film. You can tell that this was the hail Mary pass at the end of the quarter for Gilliam and I definitely think it was a score!

Speaking earlier of “Lost in La Mancha”, the writers and directors of the film are currently working on a follow-up film, titled “He Dreamed of Giants”, which dives into the history of the film’s making this time around and what has happened since the events documented in “Lost in La Mancha”. Count me in!
