Blu-ray Review “LEGO Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite”

Actors: Clancy Brown, Troy Baker, Travis Willingham, Christopher Corey Smith, Charlie Schlatter
Directors: Jon Burton
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Warner Home Video
Release Date: May 21, 2013
Run Time: 71 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

LEGO is one really smart company.  They not only have tons of great franchises like “Harry Potter”, “The Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars” but they also have DC Comics on their side.  The LEGO Batman series is one of my favorites.  In fact, I have been playing the new “LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes” on the iPhone quite a bit recently. So I am beyond excited for a full-length feature film.  I love what LEGO has done with the “Star Wars” shorts but they are just that…short.  This epic feature-film is very well made, packs a great voice cast and is alsovery funny. LEGO should be making these films for every franchise they support. They are great a real blast, clever and pack some great replay value. This is a must watch for all kids (and big kids) who love comics and superheroes!

The voice cast including Clancy Brown (“SpongeBob SquarePants” ) leads the pack with voicing Lex Luthor.  Troy Baker (“Batman: Arkham City”) pull double duty with voicing Batman and Two-Face. Travis Willingham voices Superman (“Avengers Assemble”, “The Super Hero Squad Show”). Rob Paulsen (“Animaniacs”), one of my favorite voice actors, is a laugh riot as Riddler. Christopher Corey Smith does a great job as The Joker (“Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe”) and lastly gotta give props to Charlie Schlatter (“Diagnosis Murder”) for giving Robin some great life!

Official Premise: DC Comics’ greatest superheroes and their arch nemeses face-off in a hilarious, action-packed battle in LEGO Batman: The Movie. Based on the popular video game series, the full-length TT Animation feature finds Lex Luthor taking jealousy to new heights when fellow billionaire Bruce Wayne wins the Man of the Year Award. To top Wayne’s accomplishment, Lex begins a campaign for President. And to create the atmosphere for his type of fear-based politics, he recruits the Joker to perfect a Black LEGO Destructor Ray. While wreaking havoc on Gotham, Lex successfully destroys Batman’s technology, forcing the Caped Crusader to reluctantly turn to Superman for help.

Warner Home Video has delivered a fantastic release here.  This combo pack includes a Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy, which I will be redeeming and revisiting quite often. Did I mention this release also comes with an exclusive LEGO Clark Kent/Superman Minifigure.  I mean I would purchase just for that to be honest.  The 1080p transfer looks stunning and very clear.  The film is quite colorful and it literally jumps off the screen. The DTS-HD Master Audio Track works so well with the film’s action and fantastic scores.  Once you hear that classic “Batman” theme you cannot help but just take a trip down memory lane.

The special features are quite impressive.  “Building Batman” puts us together with kids and master LEGO builder Garrett Barati about how they can make their own Batman mini-movie with LEGO’s. “Lego Batman Jumps Into Action” is Garrett Barati’s teaser used for “LEGO Super Heroes” and shows what can be done with stop-motion animation. “LEGO/DC Universe Super Heroes Video Contest Winners” shows us the short films from five of the winning entries. Lastly there are bonus DC episodes including “Triumvirate of Terror” and “Scorn of the Star Sapphire” from “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”, and “Overdrive” from “Teen Titans”.

2013 Summer Movie Preview

It’s becoming a Media Mikes tradition. Ever since the start of this site our Summer Movie Preview has started off with a Marvel Comic-based film; “Iron Man 2,” “Thor” and “The Avengers” have been previewed. This year, with “Iron Man 3” already in theatres, we’re changing it up. But not to worry – “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is only a year away! Here is a look at many of the films heading to a multiplex near you between now and Labor Day. An (*) after the title denotes a film that the Mike’s are most anticipating.

Thanks again to the Internet Movie Data Base for certain synopsis information and remember, as always, the opening date noted is subject to change at the whims of the studios.

Blu-ray Review “Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie”

Starring: Cheech Marin,Tommy Chong
Directors: Branden and Eric D. Chambers
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: April 23, 2013
Run Time: 84 minutes

Film: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

It has been a while since Cheech & Chong released a movie together, in fact it was “Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers” back in 1984.  I am not sure if you can consider this really a new film from the legendary stoners, since it is really just new animation behind the duo classic skits from their records like “Let’s Make a Dope Deal”, “Sister Mary Elephant” and “Dave’s not here”. I enjoyed seeing some visual behind these skits but it this is not really a movie. It is just separate animated skits put together in a movie form. I don’t blame them for trying since the skits are already there and the animation is very cheaply done. I am sure that there are a lot of stoners out there though will enjoy this but I feel that until you are on a high, this film is a major drag, man. I am down if the duo does an “Up in Smoke 2” finally though!

Official Premise: You’re not hallucinating. It’s the legendary toker jokers Cheech & Chong as you’ve never seen them before — in their very first Animated Movie. Catch the buzz as their most outrageous routines and laugh-out-loud lines from their Grammy Award-winning albums come to life. With help from a , bud-lovin’ body crab named Buster, Cheech & Chong deliver the ultimate comedy high and give you the munchies for more.

The 1080p transfer for this Blu-ray looks clear but the animation really doesn’t deliver the good.  This type of low-budget animation is becoming quite popular but I am really not a fan. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio track works for the jokes and the few songs but nothing amazing either. The best part of this release is the special features.  There are three commentary tracks. The first includes both Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, which is a blast and a must listen. The next is with the directors Branden Chambers and Eric D. Chambers and producer Lou Adler. It doesn’t flow as good as the duo but worth checking out. The last one is with Tommy Chong and Paris Chong, which is def for fans. The rest of the extras are an “Low Maintenance Listening Mode”, stoners will appreciate.  “Medical Marijuana Blues” Blind Mellon’s Recording Session is a riot and lastly there is a Cheech and Chong Gallery.

Blu-ray Review “Fullmetal Alchemist- The Movie: The Sacred Star of Milos”

Actors: Vic Mignogna, Maxey Whitehead, Alexis Tipton
Directors: Mike McFarland
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Funimation Prod
Release Date: April 24, 2012
Run Time: 110 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I have been a fan of “Fullmetal Alchemist” since day one.  I really enjoyed “Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos”.  I thought it was a great entry in the animes universe. The focuses on our heroes Alfonse and Edward but also introduces a bunch of other great new characters.  I did notice how they did shift the focus of the film to one of the newbies, Julia and focused some of the story on her. But I thought it still worked well and kept me very entertained and interested throughout. The series has never looked better in my eyes and I really hope that they are planning future films, maybe with Julia again (hint hint). If you are a fan of the series, this comes highly recommended.

Official Premise: A fugitive alchemist with mysterious abilities leads the Elric brothers to a distant valley of slums inhabited by the Milos, a proud people struggling against bureaucratic exploitation. Ed and Al quickly find themselves in the middle of a rising rebellion, as the exiled Milos lash out against their oppressors. At the heart of the conflict is Julia, a young alchemist befriended by Alphonse. She’ll stop at nothing to restore the Milos to their former glory – even if that means harnessing the awful power of the mythical Philosopher’s Stone.

FUNimation Entertainment has been very kind of the “Fullmetal Alchemist” series and “The Sacred Star of Milos” is no different.  It delivers a stunning presentation within its 1080p transfer and 1.78:1 aspect ratio.. The colors are very sharp and bright. Like with the last movie in the series, this one also includes both the original Japanese language track and my favorite, the English dub with very impressive Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks.  I just love the English cast from the series and this is a rare time when I prefer over the original language. The action is well-used with either track and works perfectly with the films non-stop action.

The special features are seem like they don’t come with much but I enjoyed what they had quite a bit. “Fullmetal Alchemist: Making of Sacred Star of Milos” is a very solid hour long behind-the-scenes look into the production of the film. It is in Japanese with English subtitles. There is a fantastic commentary track from the English dub cast including Maxey Whitehead (Alfonse), Christopher R. Sabat (Armstrong), Vic Mignogna (Ed), and many others from the crew. Lastly there is a U.S. Trailer, Web Promo, and TV Spot included. What I like most about this film is that you don’t really need to know the series that well to be able to enjoy and follow unlike the last movie “Conqueror of Shamballa”. Don’t miss this!

Blu-ray Review “Fullmetal Alchemist- The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa”

Actors: Romi Pak, Rie Kugimiya, Shun Oguri, Kazuko Kato, Masane Tsukayama
Directors: Seiji Mizushima, Mike McFarland
Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Studio: Funimation
Release Date: November 17, 2009
Run Time: 105 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

When “Fullmetal Alchemist” completed its 51 episode run, I was left dying for more…as was every other fan. “Conqueror of Shamballa” is our answered prayer. Of course this was before the second series “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” was developed. There is one catch though, you would have had to watch the original series first before watching this, since it picks up right after the end. There is no explanation of the the storyline or back story of the characters, so be sure to watch the series first unless you will feel lost. Nonetheless, this movie is an epic conclusion to the series and a perfect compliment to the series. If you’re a fan of the “Fullmetal Alchemist” series, then this is a must watch!

Official Premise: It is 1923 in Munich. Two years have passed since Edward Elric’s sacrifice ripped him out of his world and into ours, separating him from his younger brother, Alphonse. In that time, Ed’s continued research into rocketry has allied him with Alphonse Heiderich, a fellow researcher who oddly resembles Ed’s brother. Progress has been slow, however, and Ed has become discouraged. But when he saves a quiet Gypsy girl with the power to read minds, Ed is quickly pulled into a plot by the Thule Society and the burgeoning Nazi Party that could drag both worlds into a terrible war. Back in his own world, Al has been unlocking new secrets of alchemy and gaining incredible powers, all in the hopes of finding Ed. Battling the occult, ideological extremists, and monstrous Homunculi lurking in the shadows, can the brothers find a way to reunite without causing chaos and bloodshed? What will happen when the world of alchemy and the world of modern science collide?

FUNimaton Entertainment is known for delivering very sharp Blu-ray releases.  The 1080p transfer is quite impressive.  The animation on the film seems different from the series but still looks good. Since the film is so epic the action is well portrayed and looks impressive. There are two audio tracks on this release. The English track, Dolby TrueHD 5.1, is preferred and easily takes the win on this release. The English voice cast has become so recognizable and fan favorite for the series. The Japanese track also includes a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track and hardcore fans will still enjoy and appreciate, but I have to go with the English track here.

The special features are very impressive for the film. There are three full-length audio commentary tracks. The first is with director Seiji Mizushima, Kugimiya Rie (Al), Toyoguchi Megumi (Winry), and Park Romi (Ed). The second is with Seiji Mizushima, Miyahara Yohei (technical director), and Oyabu Yoshihiro (production desk). The last is hosted by Mike McFarland (Jean Havoc) and Colleen Clinkenbeard (Riza Hawkeye/Rose Thomas) and plays more like a voice over interview with cast chatting over the film. There is a 40 minutes “The Making of Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa”, the featurette includes interviews with director Seiji Mizushima and packs some nice behind the scenes clips. “Talk Session with Seiji Mizushima, Romi Park, Rei Kugimiya, and Toru Okawa” is a sit down with the director and voice cast from the series to chat about the film and the series. There were also seven trailers for “Conqueror of Shamballa” and some production art.

Blu-ray Review "InuYasha: The Movie – The Complete Collection"

Actors: Richard Ian Cox, Moneca Stori, Kirby Morrow, Kelly Sheridan, Jillian Michaels
Directors: Toshiya Shinohara
Number of discs: 2
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Viz Media
Release Date: March 26, 2013
Run Time: 380 minutes

Films: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

When I started watching “InuYasha” back in the early 2000’s, I was immediately hooked. I couldn’t get enough of the show.  I would watch episodes over and over just to get my fix while I waited for new episodes each week. These films are extremely epic and fit very well within the series. I also really enjoyed the show in the longer format. The typical 30 minute episode was great but I was always left immediately wanting to watch another episode. This is the first time that these films are available on “high-def” (more on that below) Blu-ray. If you are a fan of the show it should be a no-brainer in order to get your “InuYasha” fix.

So back to the beginning, in 2001, my prayers were answered with the first “InuYasha” movie. A movie version of my favorite anime? Count me in! The films fit right in between the series. The first movie took place between episodes 54 and 55. Luckily Sunrise was smart and replicated this success the following year in 2002 with the second film, which takes place between episodes 95 & 96. The same goes for the third film which came out in 2003 and ran between episodes 136 and 137.  The last film premiered in 2004 and premiered not too long after the last episode of the “InuYasha” aired.

InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time: 200 years ago, InuYasha’s father sealed away a powerful demon from China named Hyoga. A Shikon Jewel shard awakens Hyoga’s son, Menomaru, inspiring him to absorb the remains of his father’s power to take control of the world. It’s up to InuYasha and his friends to stop this nearly invincible foe!

InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass: With their greatest foe seemingly defeated, Inuyasha and his friends begin to return to their lives. But their short period of peace is once again shattered as a new enemy begins to emerge. Kaguya, the self-proclaimed Princess from the Moon of legend, begins a plan to plunge the world into a perpetual night of the full moon. Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo must once again unite to face the new threat.

InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler: Many years ago, the Great Dog Demon wielded the Three Swords of the Fang. Upon his death, he bequeathed a sword to each of his sons, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, leaving the third sword, the wrath-filled Sounga, locked away forever. Now that the Sounga’s power has been awakened, these two battling brothers must put away their sibling rivalry and face off against a force that spells doom for all mankind!

InuYasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island: Within the dark recesses of Horai Island, a group of half-demons lives under the demonic rule of the Four War Gods. Escaping with barely a shred of hope, Ai, the youngest of the half-demons, returns to the island with Inuyasha, who must face not only the Four War Gods, but the past he left behind on the island fifty years ago.

Now onto the Blu-ray itself, Viz Media has done a wonderful job with releasing the latest series of “InuYasha: The Final Act” on Blu-ray prior to this. I was really hoping for the same thing with “InuYasha: The Movie – The Complete Collection” but was a left a bit disappointed.  The films are only presented in 1080i, which is technically high definition but it is a bit of a cop out for a Blu-ray release.  It still looks good with sharp colors and line details but you can see the difference clearly that it is not full HD.

The audio tracks are a step up from prior “InuYasha” releases.  There is both an English and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.  This is a step up from the releases for “InuYasha: The Final Set”.  The 5.1 tracks really capture the scale of these films and work with the non-stop action.  I have to admit, I couldn’t really choose a favorite track.  The Japanese works best with since it feels the most authentic but I love the voice cast with from the English dub as well.  There are also English and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks.

So on this release, we get four films but really no major special features. There is only one extra on this release from any of the films, which would be “Production Sketches”.  I did enjoying looking at this artwork but I would have loved to seen much more.  There is no commentary tracks or featurettes included, which is very disappointing.  I am not sure what it is about anime Blu-ray releases but they never come with any decent special features.

Audrina Patridge talks about Maxim’s Beach Party & "Scary Movie 5"

Television personality Audrina Patridge is probably best known from the hit reality series “The Hills” where she was one four original cast members. Since the show has ended Audrina has appeared in her own reality series as well as several movies such as “Sorority Row” and “Into the Blue 2”. Media Mikes had the chance to talk with Audrina recently about her appearance at this year’s Maxim Beach Party and her upcoming role in “Scary Movie 5”.

Adam Lawton:  Can you tell us about the Maxim Spring Break event?
Audrina Patridge: This is my second year doing the event in Panama City Beach Florida. I am the grand ambassador for Curve Appeal perfume and cologne. Maxim Magazine and Curve teamed up to put on this Spring Break party. The event features a giant stage built right on the sand next to the ocean. It is really beautiful. There is going to be a bunch of different contests held throughout the break such as hula hooping, push-up contests and of course the booty shake contest. This was one I judged last year and a guy was actually the winner. It is so much fun to see everyone out there having fun. You get to see people of all ages out there. There are also lots of Curve models walking around handing out samples so that not only do the guys and girls on break look good but they smell good as well.

AL: How did you become involved with Curve?
AP: I have always been really big on fragrance as I think it’s important to leave a lasting impression. I get a lot of compliments on the smell of the fragrances and am a really big fan myself. It’s great that we have been able to partner up.

AL: What do you like most about going to Spring Break each year?
AP: I love traveling and have had so many great opportunities to do so. I like getting to meet all the different people as well. I am 27 now and I think everyone deserves a Spring Break no matter how old you are. Fortunately I get to be a part of this and it is just so much fun. Being down here takes me back to my early twenties. It’s just a fun time.

AL: Will you be doing any promotion while you’re down there for “Scary Movie 5”?
AP: I am just there for the Spring Break Party but “Scary Movie 5” comes out April 12th. I did a cameo in the film which was a lot of fun. We filmed my piece in Georgia at this huge, beautiful mansion that was really old. I can’t wait to see how things turned out.

AL: Do you have any other projects coming out that we can be watching for?
AP: Nothing that I can talk about just yet. Everyone has to make sure they get some Curve Appeal and go see “Scary Movie 5” on April 15th.

Blu-ray Review "Brother Bear: 2 Movie Collection"

Actors: Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Suarez, Jason Raize, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas
Directors: Aaron Blaise, Robert Walker
Rated: G (General Audience)
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 12, 2013
Run Time: 85 minutes

Brother Bear: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Brother Bear II: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

When I first saw “Brother Bear” in the theaters, I first thought that Disney was slipping quite a bit with their animated films but since it has grown on it. “Brother Bear” is not a perfect film and in fact is one of the last classically animated film from Disney. The film delivered a great message and has quite a bit of heart. The animation still holds up, especially on Blu-ray. The voice cast includes an interesting choice of Joaquin Phoenix and Rick Mornais, in one of his last film roles. So since this film is a two movie collection, we also have the direct-to-video sequel “Brother Bear 2” included. This film screams direct-to-video and really should be considered as a bonus feature here for this release. “Brother Bear” is a the real draw here though and worth the purchase or upgrade alone.

Official Premise: Disney proudly presents two heartwarming and hilarious movies in one incredible collection – Brother Bear, the 2003 Academy Award nominee for best animated feature, and Brother Bear 2 – together for the first time on Blu-ray. Bring home an entire forest full of fun, complete with digitally restored high definition picture and sound. After an impulsive boy named Kenai is magically transformed into a bear, he and his little brother bear, Koda, take a courageous (and often hilarious) journey to see the Northern Lights. Experience the excitement of these two fantastic films like never before on Disney Blu-ray!

Even though these films aren’t Disney classics per se, they are still decent film and look amazing on Blu-ray. “Brother Bear” looks stunning with its 1080p transfer presented with its aspect ratio of 2.35:1 with black bars at the top and bottom. The colors are beautiful, sharp and really pop off the screen. Believe it or not “Brother Bear 2” is also very impressive as well. Even though it is direct-to-video quality Disney cleaned this film up for this Blu-ray quite well. Next up is the audio, “Brother Bear” delivers a great DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, which works well with the action, the dialogue, the score and of course Phil Collins’ songs. Again “Brother Bear 2” also delivers with it’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. For what it is worth, the track works with what what the film has going for it.

Next up are the special features, which are just ports of previous DVD releases. They are decent but in terms of taking the extra effort, it is a letdown. “Brother Bear” starts off with an audio commentary track with the film’s characters Rutt and Tuke (voiced by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas), the film’s Canadian Moose duo. If you are a die-hard fan, I highly recommend this as it is a riot. “Paths of Discovery: The Making of Brother Bear” is a four-part documentary focusing on the cast, story, production and score. There are three deleted scenes with an introduction from directors Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, as well an Never-Before-Heard Song (except on the last DVD release) called “Fishing Song”. “Art Review” takes us with Art director Robh Ruppel and supervising animator Byron Howard as they discuss…art from the film.

“Bear Legends” is a very short series of Native American tales. There is the song “Transformation” with its original Phil Collins lyrics, as well as a Sing-Along Song for “On My Way” and a Music Video for “Look Through My Eyes” by Phil Collins. “Koda’s Outtakes” are in character and are quite funny, taking a page from “Toy Story”. “Making Noise: The Art of Foley” is a non-technical look at sound design for kids. Wondering about “Brother Bear 2” extras? The only extra is “Behind the Music” with Producers Jim Ballantine and Susan Kirch, director Ben Gluck and others talking about the films tunes.

“Brother Bear” is not the only animation classic being released on high-def Blu-ray. March 12th will also bring the release of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1 & 2″, “Mulan 1 & 2″ and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Of course like Disney is smart to release their films like that ”Mulan”, ”Brother Bear” and “Hunchback” with their direct-to-video sequels because otherwise I do not think that anyone would be interested in owning them. So I look at these direct-to-video sequels as a bonus feature really. I am not sure how “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” fits into this trend but that is one release that I am highly anticipating.

Studio: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 12, 2013

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: 4 out of 5 stars
The Hunchback of Notre Dame II: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2.5 out of 5 stars

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is another one of Disney’s underrated films.  This was released in the mid-late 90’s during introduction of Pixar and their computer generated animated films like “Toy Story”.  “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” didn’t make the cut with its “boring” 2D animation and was not given the respect it deserves.  I love the music in the film thanks to the genius of Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid”, “Tangled”). Disney has paired this film, which is hitting Blu-ray for the first time with its painful direct-to-video sequel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame II”. The sequel barely runs an hour and is one of my least favorites of the Disney’s mass explosion of direct-to-video sequels. Still though, if you are a fan of the first film then this Blu-ray is surely worth the upgrade to high-definition.

Official Premise: Rediscover the majestic musical adventure of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame II – together for the first time in stunning Blu-ray high definition. Bring your family together for the extraordinary tale of Quasimodo in a soaring celebration of the beauty inside all of us! Join the world’s most unlikely hero as he meets his first real friend, Esmeralda, while fighting to save the people and city he loves. The legendary story continues as Quasi reunites with his gargoyle friends to protect the cathedral’s most famous bell and find true love. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame soars with a magnificent score by renowned composer Alan Menken (Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin). Enjoy both magical films, bursting with brilliant animation and unforgettable characters, together on Disney Blu-ray.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” looks very vibrant with its 1080p transfer.  Honestly, though it is not perfect and it feels a little 2D and does pop like other recent classic hand-drawn animated films has.  But that doesn’t mean that it is not impressive.  In fact “The Hunchback of Notre Dame II” believe it or not also looks quite impressive.  Despite the fact that it is not the greatest film, it sure does look sharp even with its direct-to-video features. Both films also include a very impressive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The first film contains some wonderful songs and a great score, thanks again to Menken and his work is represented very well here. The second film also packs some songs, not as good, but still sounds very nice with this track. Also I should mention that both films are located on one Blu-ray disc and the additional two DVDs include each film on their own disc.

The special features are disappointing and are simple ports of the films previous DVD releases.  First we have an audio commentary track for the first film with directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise and its producer Don Hahn. Decent track and some decent information shared. “The Making of The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is a decent length featurette with host Jason Alexander and with voice cast Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, and Tony Jay and many more talented people who works on this film. There is a “Multi-Language Reel” for the song “A Guy Like You”, which was translates into sixteen different languages. There is “Behind the Scenes with Jennifer Love Hewitt”, which is basically a short interview with actress talking about her role.  Lastly “A Gargoyle’s Life” has Jason Alexander’s character Hugo reciting a poem with clips from the first film.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is not the only animation classic being released on high-def Blu-ray. March 12th will also bring the release of “Brother Bear 1 & 2″, “Mulan 1 & 2″ and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Blu-ray Review "Mulan: 2 Movie Collection"

Actors: Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, Pat Morita, Harvey Fierstein
Directors: Tony Bancroft, Barry Cook
Number of discs: 3
Rated: G (General Audience)
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 12, 2013
Run Time: 167 minutes

Mulan: 4 out of 5 stars
Mulan II: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

“Mulan” was at the tail end of Disney’s hand-drawn animation success.  I have always been a fan of “Mulan” and I always thought it was underrated.  The music and songs are memorable and it has fun characters like Mushu (thanks to Eddie Murphy).  The film also creates another classic Disney princess, who is not only pretty but also very strong.  I think having a daughter of my own that resonates a little more with me. “Mulan II” on the other hand is quite a different story. It comes from a time that Disney was making sequels left and right to their products just for the sake of the buck.  To be honest though, it is not as bad as I remember.  Maybe that is due to its impressive Blu-ray transfer (more on that below).  So obviously the main draw here is to own “Mulan” for the first time on high-def Blu-ray.  The film is also celebrating its 15th anniversary, which is cause for celebration.

Official Premise: Celebrate the 15th anniversary of Disney’s critically-acclaimed masterpiece Mulan with this sensational 2-movie collection – presented for the first time in Blu-ray high definition. Mulan’s triumphant tale of honor, courage, and family pride shines brighter than ever with new digitally mastered picture and sound! Disney’s original animated classic magically transforms an ancient Chinese legend into a spectacular motion picture event. Relive all the wonder and excitement as Mulan breaks tradition by joining the Imperial army accompanied by her hilarious guardian dragon, Mushu. The adventure continues in Mulan II, as newly engaged Mulan and Shang journey to a distant city in a valiant quest to save their beloved empire. Your whole family will adore these two extraordinary films on Disney Blu-ray.

Alright now more on the audio/video presentation.  Disney is known for going out of their way to deliver very impressive high-def transfers of their classic animated films.  “Mulan” ranks up their with the best of them. The 1080p is extremely sharp and really showcases the beautiful animation and colors used throughout this film. There is something about hand-drawn animation that just really looks amazing on Blu-ray.  Even though, I love me some Pixar films, I really have a special place in my heart for the slight imperfections in the lines and it just reminds you that everything does not need to be perfect.  “Mulan II” also (believe it or not) looks quite amazing with its 1080p transfer.  Of course, it is not as good as “Mulan” since it carriers that direct-to-video look, but the colors look good and sharp even though. Like the 1080p video, “Mulan” also packs a fantastic DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track.  It works very well with the music and action. “Mulan II” also sounds great but again a notch below the first.  The songs (even though not great) sound decent and the dialogue is clear. Also I should mention that both films are located on one Blu-ray disc and the additional two DVDs include each film on their own disc.

The special features are probably my least favorite aspect of this whole release.  “Mulan” packs nothing new at all for it’s 15th anniversary and just rehashes its DVD features, all presented in SD.  There is an audio commentary track with Producer Pam Coats and directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, decent and very informative. There are seven deleted scenes (like usual) in storyboards mode with introductions by director Tony Bancroft. “Classic Backstage Disney” runs about an hour with numerous behind-the-scenes featurettes including “Mulan’s Fun Facts,” “The Journey Begins,” “Story Artists’ Journey,” “Design,” and  “Production”.  Lastly “Classic Music & More” includes more featurettes including “Songs of Mulan,” “Mulan’s International Journey and five music videos. “Mulan II” fares even worse with only three short extras.  “Voices of Mulan” looks into the return of several original cast members, as well as the new voices.  There are three deleted scenes, surprisingly in HD. Lastly there is a music video for “I Wanna Be Like Other Girls” by Atomic Kitten.

“Mulan” is not the only animation classic being released on high-def Blu-ray.  March 12th will also bring the release of “Brother Bear 1 & 2”, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1 & 2” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.  Of course like Disney is smart to release their films like that “Mulan”,  “Brother Bear” and “Hunchback” with their direct-to-video sequels because otherwise I do not think that anyone would be interested in owning them.  So I look at these direct-to-video sequels as a bonus feature really.  I am not sure how “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” fits into this trend but that is one release that I am highly anticipating.
