Movieexhibitor Sid Grauman, one of Hollywood’s best known and most creative showmen, opened The Chinese in 1927 and launched the handprints-footprints ceremony a year later. Among the first handprints and footprints were those of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Recent celebrants have included: Brad Pitt,George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Jennifer Aniston.

Today, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre forecourt is among the world’s most photographed tourist sites, annually attracting as many visitors as the Taj Mahal in India and the Prado Museum in Madrid. In any given year, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre hosts over 40 red carpet film premieres and since it opened, it has hosted three Academy Award(R) ceremonies and numerous world premieres, including those for internationally-acclaimed film franchises, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Chickenfoot Debuts Music Video for “Three and a Half Letters (I Need a Job)”

CHICKENFOOT DEBUTS MUSIC VIDEO FOR “THREE AND A HALF LETTERS (I NEED A JOB)”
GROUP TEAMS WITH FEEDING AMERICA TO MOTIVATE FANS TO HELP THE NEARLY 49 MILLION AMERICANS FACING HUNGER

LOS ANGELES, CA—October 18, 2011—Chickenfoot, the supergroup featuring guitarist Joe Satriani, drummer Chad Smith, and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and frontman Sammy Hagar, debuts their music video for the song “Three and a Half Letters (I Need a Job)” today.  The song, from their recent release, Chickenfoot III ( eOne Music/Edel/EarMusic), is  motivated by the dismal economy, which has led to problems such as hunger and job loss, and features letters that were sent to Hagar as pleas for help.  Chickenfoot is partnering with Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, to encourage fans to help alleviate some of the effects of the economy.  The band will perform “Three and a Half Letters” on Jimmy Kimmel Live on the evening of November 3rd.

“I received a lot of letters from people over the years who were looking for help or work and recently I received one from an Afghan War Veteran that ended with ‘Can you help? I need a job.’  That really hit me and the song came together,” said Hagar.  “We really want to encourage people to help where they can, and I think one of the easiest ways is by making contributions to a local food bank. I hope we get this message across in this video and while we are on tour.”

“I Need a Job,” directed by Arthur Rosato (Springsteen, Bonnaroo), features the real life letters received by Hagar and closes with a call to action from the band and Feeding America.  Beginning today, the band is inviting fans to post their own letters and stories to their website in hopes it will help them find employment and continue to shed light on the critical condition in America.  The band is also planning on additional outreach to bring more awareness to the issue in each city on their upcoming “Road Test Tour.”  While those who are better off may not be able to offer actual jobs, Chickenfoot believes that contributions to food banks in their hometowns is one simple way, among many others, that fans can help those struggling on a local level. To find your Feeding America member food bank, visit http://feedingamerica.org/foodbank.

The band is set to embark on the recently announced “2011 Road Test Tour,” beginning November 1st at the Warfield Theatre, San Francisco.  The tour will take the band (Satriani, Anthony, Hagar and touring drummer Kenny Aronoff) through five US and five European cities in support of their most recent release Chickenfoot III, which debuted on the Billboard album chart at #9.   Chickenfoot III, has continued to receive critical acclaim:

“It’s a rare case of a group that’s equal to – or perhaps even greater than – the sum of its parts…this is an album that really wins hearts with its granite thump’n’roll.”  – Gary Graff, Billboard

Chickenfoot III features 10 tracks with so many moments of epiphany that one can barely take them all in on first listen.  Colossal, stadium-shaking riffs abound on earth-movers such as “Alright, Alright,” “Last Temptation” and “Lighten Up.” Tradition meets innovation on the Nashville pop-tinged “Different Devil,” the Delta-blues flavored “Something Going Wrong” and the aching rock ballad “Come Closer.”  Chickenfoot III follows the band’s 2009 debut album, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 100 and was certified gold for sales of over 500,000 units by the Recording Industry Association of America.

THE 2011 ROAD TEST TOUR DATES:
November 1                       Warfield Theatre              San Francisco, CA

Film Review “Vamperifica”

Director: Bruce Ornstein
Stars: Martin Yurkovic, Dreama Walker and Creighton James
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 95 minutes

Our Score: 1 out of 5 stars

I am not really sure how to describe this film. It tries to be serious at first but then switches gears goes campy. I am not sure it is able to handle both ends. The first thirty minutes are decent but then falls short in the second half. Honestly the acting isn’t even that bad. Martin Yurkovic  and Dreama Walker is are good in there roles.  It is Martin’s first role in fact and he does ok. There is some decent gore in the second half but it doesn’t make up for the story falling short very quickly.

The story is about a flamboyant college student that wants to be in a stage production though he finds out that he has the soul of a great vampire king. He has to choose between his friends, his destiny…and a musical number. He also has mommy issues that he is dealing with. Sounds fun…right? No. The idea of him being a “vampire king” gets lost in the shuffle, which could have made this better. Don’t even get me started on the end of the film which sealed the deal on how bad this was.

Interview with Emilio Estevez

Emilio Estevez has never been one to sit back and let things come to him.  After a small role, cut from the finished film, in “Apocalypse Now,” he cut his teeth in television projects until his first big role opposite Matt Dillon in “Tex.”  The next time he worked with Francis Ford Coppola he made the cut, appearing as Two Bit Matthews in “The Outsiders,” which was based on the novel by S.E. Hinton.  Estevez took another Hinton novel, “That Was Then, This Is Now,” and adapted it for the screen, starring in the film version in 1985.  That same year also introduced film fans to what was referred to as “The Brat Pack”…a group of highly talented young actors that took Hollywood by storm.  Films like “The Breakfast Club” and “St. Elmo’s Fire” established Estevez as a bonafide star.  In 1987 he wrote, directed and starred in “Wisdom,” a film best described as the tale of a modern day Robin Hood.

He went on to star in films like “Stakeout,” “Young Guns” and “The Mighty Ducks,” films so popular that they spawned sequels.  He co-starred with his brother, Charlie Sheen, in another film he wrote and directed, “Men at Work.”  He also directed himself and Charlie in the acclaimed film about the porno industry, “Rated X.”  In 2006, he wrote, directed and appeared in the award winning ensemble film “Bobby,” a film that dealt with the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.  “Bobby” made many film critics Top 10 lists (including mine) and confirmed Estevez as a talent to watch.  He makes good on the promise of “Bobby” with his newest film, “The Way.”  While traveling the country in a motor coach promoting the film, Mr. Estevez took the time to sit down with MediaMikes:

Mike Smith:  What drew you to this project?
Emilio Estevez:  The young man standing behind me (he gestures to his son, Taylor, who is videoing the promotional event).  He went to Spain in 2003 with my father.  They went over there to check out the Camino (a pilgrimage that figures prominently in “The Way”).  Taylor had been working as my dad’s assistant on “The West Wing.”  He went to Spain.  And in a little town on the Camino my son fell in love.  He met a girl, fell in love and decided to move there.  So that was sort of the beginning of it.  I figured if I wanted to spend time with my son I needed to figure out how to work in Spain.  I kept saying, “hey, why don’t we go over there and make a film?”  That started a dialogue.  It started us talking about it.  And then little by little I developed a story.  I came up with this idea of this man who loses his son in Spain…which is kind of what I experienced…but I knew it needed to be bigger than that.  It needs to be more like “The Wizard of Oz.”  Because the Camino is marked in yellow.  The Camino de Santiago could be the Emerald City.  And the audience is Dorothy…along with the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow…off to see the Wizard they go.

MS:  Wow!  I never even thought of it like that but it makes so much sense.
EE:  Remember where we meet Jack (a character in the film)…he’s in a haystack.  He’s the scarecrow because he has writer’s block…

MS:  He can’t use his brain.
EE:…he can’t use his brain.

MS:  Wow.  Have you ever made the pilgrimage yourself?
EE:  Just by car.  I spent a lot of time getting to know it.  We moved along the Camino with this small crew.  There were about 50 of us.  We covered about 350 kilometers of it.  We were there for quite a long time.

MS:  With the exception of your own films and a couple of “family” cameos (Estevez has appeared on “The West Wing,” starring his father and on “Two and a Half Men,” which starred his brother), you’re not on screen much anymore.  Do you plan to focus more on working behind the camera as opposed to in front of it?
EE:  Danny DeVito once described directing as “death by a thousand questions.”  And that’s very accurate.  You’re on a movie for two years plus.  When you’re acting you can do two or three films a year , but it doesn’t knock your socks off.  You get to stay intact.  I want to get back in front of the camera a little bit more.  That’s the overall plan…to do a little bit of each.  I’d like to be able to do what Clint Eastwood does.  He’s in a movie when he wants to be, he’s not when he doesn’t want to be.

MS:  I’ve asked other actors who direct, like Keith Gordon and Charles Martin Smith, this question:  is there a role out there that would bring you back?
EE:  There is a role out there.  I wrote it.  It’s kind of a family franchise type of film along the lines of “The Mighty Ducks.”  I wrote it.  I’ll direct it.  And I’ll star in it.
