DVD Review “Grave Encounters”

Directed by: The Vicious Brothers
Starring: Sean Rogerson, Juan Riedinger, Ashleigh Gryzko, Mackenzie Gray, Merwin Mondesir
Distributed by Tribeca Film Festival
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running time: 95 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I am sure everyone has had their fare share of first person POV shaky hand fake documentary films but this one stands out from the lesser imitations. If you like “Ghost Hunters” and all those paranormal shows, then you will like this for sure. This packs some decent scares and good visual effects for a low budget film. The film sags a little bit in the middle but there are also some good twists throughout the film that keeps it moving.

The story is simple and done before but this one packs a different little twist. it is told in “true story/missing footage format” ala “the Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity”. We follow the crew of TV series “Grave Encounters” as they prepare to shoot an episode inside the abandoned psychiatric hospital. Of course once they check-in to the hospital…they might have a hard time checking out.

The extras are short but definitely enjoyable with an interview with the Vicious Brothers and Producer Shawn Angelski. It is definitely informative and gives insight into the film. I also enjoyed the “Making of Grave Encounters”, which is obviously a behind the scenes into the production.

DVD Review “Dragon’s Lair: The Complete Series”

Developed by: Ruby-Spears Productions
Voices of: Bob Sarlatte, Ellen Gerstell, Fred Travalena, Michael Mish, Arthur Burghardt, Peter Cullen
Studio: Warner Bros.
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Episodes: 13
Run Time: 279 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Dragon’s Lair” was always an interesting type of arcade game especially since it had you choose you own path and your decisions in the game reflected different results. Now if your wondering how that transfers to a television show, obviously not totally well. The show does present different scenarios that could happen for our hero and it fun because it is usually before a commercial break, so it leaves you waiting to see what happens.  Honestly though, the show has dragons, princesses and knights…and what else do you want in an 80’s cartoon. I think it works for me.

In case you haven’t heard of this show that is due to the fact that it only last 1 season of 13 episodes. The show is well done by the Hanna-Barbera team and the animation is decent for mid-80’s. The voice work is completely over the top and reminds of “The Legend of Zelda” TV series. This DVD release is the first time that this series is seeing the light of day, thank you again Warner Brothers Archive. In general the show is fun and mindless. It is not the best series that ever came out of the 80’s but it is also not the worse.  No extras are included on the disc, which is OK because at least we got the complete series, not a volumized set.

Synopsis: The legendary videogame Dragon’s Lair was a blockbuster (and quarter guzzling) sensation when it first debuted, spawning sequels, imitators, and a beloved Saturday morning cartoon series. Developed by the powerhouse animation crew put together by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the Dragon’s Lair cartoon made many contributions to the Dragon’s Lair saga, from naming the Dragon “Singe” to rounding out the cast with such memorable supporting players as Bertram the horse (voiced by animation legend Peter Cullen) and Timothy the squire (voiced by Michael Mish). Mimicking the action of a videogame, Dragon’s Lair pauses the action and asks the audience which action Dirk should take next in his never-ending quest to protect the kingdom of King Ethelred and his beloved Princess Daphne. But enough talk! Dirk the Daring faces doom throughout this 13 episode, 2-disc set and he needs YOU to help him decide what to do next!

DVD Review “The High Cost of Living”

Directed by: Deborah Chow
Starring: Zach Braff, Isabelle Blais, Patrick Labbé
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 97 minutes
Distributed by: Tribeca Film

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

I do not think I ever saw one episode of “Scrubs”…but nothing against Zach Braff, just never got into it. For some reason this film stuck out to me and I felt that I should see it. It turns out that this film hits very close to home for me with having a pregnant wife currently…you will find out more about that down below. Tribeca Film has really become a reliable and great distributor and have been releasing some great films. This film has a great story and a wonderful cast, who give some really powerful performances.

The story is about a fast-living drug dealer named Henry (Zach Braff) who accidentally hits a pregnant woman, Nathalie (Isabelle Blais) while driving recklessly and flees the scene. Due to guilt Henry, tracks her down, only to find that she lost her child in the hit and run accident. Henry tries to fix things and make things better, even though she doesn’t known the truth about that night. Is Henry able to save Nathalie or is it too late for both of them.

Zach Braff wasn’t good in this film but REALLY good. It was a very powerful role and he nailed it. Isabelle Blais was very intense and delivers the emotional role quite well. The two of them have great chemistry and really make this film, since it is really only about the two of them. The only bonus features on the disc is an interview with Zach Braff, interesting but not outstanding. That is my only complaint with Tribeca Film DVDs is that they do not pack any of their releases with major extras.

 INDOMINA RELEASING HAS HORROR COVERED

The critics are clamoring for Outcast, the gripping thriller about black magic and witchery that stars James Nesbitt (The Hobbit) and James Cosmo (Braveheart). Ain’t It Cool News calls it “an excellent film” to be seen “at all costs,” and Eight Rooks of TwitchFilm.com proclaims it “a genuinely menacing piece of horror.” Mary (Kate Dickie, TV’s “The Pillars of the Earth”) harbors a dark history, but must confront her past when a hunter with magical powers (Nesbitt) is assigned to capture her and kill her son. As the terrifying cat-and-mouse game continues, locals begin to die at the hands of an unknown life force and a deadly fear takes hold.  Currently available on Video on Demand.

The Pack follows Charlotte (Emilie Dequenne), a beautiful but rough around the edges kind of girl, who drives a beat-up station wagon in the countryside of northern France. Her journey takes a turn when she picks up a mysterious hitchhiker (Benjamine Biolay), with whom she strikes an unusual bond. Stopping at a roadside diner, her new companion strangely disappears, and Charlotte finds herself knocked unconscious and held captive. She soon encounters a peculiar and disturbed woman (Yolande Moreau), and discovers that her blood is being used to feed a “pack” of flesh-eating ghouls. Available on Demand on September 27.

DVD Review “Ron White’s Comedy Salute to the Troops”

Director: Tom Forrest
Starring: Ron White, Lewis Black, Kathleen Madigan, Cic Henley, Tim Wilson, Alex Reymundo, Robert Hawkins, Rascal Flatts, John Oates and Margo Rey.
Studio: Vivendi Entertainment
Running Time: 76 minutes
MPAA Rating: Not Rating

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Ron White is usually good for a laugh or two. I am not a mega big fan of his work but I like a good joke. If you don’t know Ron “Tater Salad” White, he is best known as the cigar smoking, scotch drinking guy from the Blue Collar Comedy tour. I also figured this would be decent since it has the likes of Lewis Black and Rascal Flatts, both who I enjoy very much. But looking past the comedy and the music, this disc is really about saluting to the troops and benefiting the Armed Forces Foundation. It is great cause but the comedy falls short maybe since its made for TV and the music is not that exciting.

Everyone included on this disc only really gets a short 10-15 minutes to perform, so it is a little tight in time. The bits were not too funny overall, in fact I think that Ron White was the only one that had me laughing. The musical performances by Rascal Flatts, Margo Rey and John Oates were decent but didn’t feel electric and fired up. Overall it was a little bit disappointing. The bonus features on the disc contains extended bits from each of the comedian and that was this disc savior since it contains some good bits.

DVD Review “Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated: Season 1, Volume 3”

Created by: Joe Ruby and Ken Spears
Directed by: Victor Cook
Voices of: Frank Welker, Matthew Lillard, Grey DeLisle, Mindy Cohn, Gary Cole, Patrick Warburton, Lewis Black
Studio: Warner Home Video
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Episodes: 4
Running Time: 90 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Cartoon Network’s “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” is actually the eleventh adaption of the Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo series and it also stands as a reboot for the franchise. I have always been a fan of this series since it mixes horror themes with mystery and comedy. What I like most about this show is that each episode ends in a cliffhanger and makes you want to watch the next  one.  I watch quite a bit of animation and this series stand out as clever and also funny.  If you remember the live action films, Matthew Lillard reprises his role of Shaggy.  Other notable voice cast includes Gary Cole, Patrick Warburton and Lewis Black.

The episodes includes in this set are episode 9 through 12.  In “Battle of the Humungonauts”, focuses on a sibling rivalry that rises to monstrous heights.  “Howl of the Fright Hound” follows a robot dog tries to literally tear the gang apart. “The Secret Serum” is about a vampire who has a thirst for a beauty formula wants to sink her fangs into the kinds.  “The Shrieking Madness” releases a creature who comes alive from the cover of a science-fiction book. What I like about this series is that each episode are intertwined with some aspect from its prior episode.  I wish this release would have had more episodes in this volume.  This season includes 26 episodes and I look forward to future volumes.  Unfortunately there are no special features on this disc.

Synopsis:  The adventures of a talking dog and his four human pals as they try to unravel the strange and haunted history of their hometown. The tone is comedic, but it will never lose the edge that our heroes are in some frightening situations. The stakes are real.

DVD Review “George A. Romero Presents Deadtime Stories- Volume 2”

Directors: Jeff Monahan, Matt Walsh
Starring: George A. Romero
Studio: Millennium Entertainment
MPAA Rated: R
Run Time: 101 minutes

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

If you read my review for Volume 1 of this release then you would know that 2.5/5 is a RAVING review compared. I still am confused as to why George A. Romero decided to put his name on these films since they are not B movies and are lower than even Syfy originals (which I LOVE BTW). The acting and production value are so weak overall. Luckily the first two films in this series are good and really gory. The last one is lame but watchable.

The first film is called “THE GORGE”. It is about three best friends that go hiking but an avalanche trapped in a cave and resort to cannibalism. The second is called “ON SABBATH HILL” about a professor relationship with his student causes her to commit suicide, but still comes to class to haunt him. The last one is my least favorite “DUST” about a scientist that discovers dust from Mars that the ability to cure cancer but a security guard steals it for terminally ill wife and of course things go array.

Luckily this collection of horror films does not skimp on the gore. It is actually pretty intense especially in the first film. Since this is a zero budget project even though it shows it this is a major improvement from Volume 1’s films which I could barely even finish. Overall worth a watch but definitely not “Tales from the Crypt” quality.

“When Creature Attack” movies are always fun especially ones that are from the 50’s and 60’s. This one is a little different since they are being controlled by a human. I enjoyed the film quite a bit and I am surprised I have never seen this film in the past. The animal to human interactions are fantastic and probably and also very risky since it looks very real and up close. What drew me most to the film was the amazing old fashioned poster art. Such a classic! The plot is a little cookey with the main baddie being involved with a animal cult…besides that this is a fun romp.

We meet Michael Conrad who is a zookeeper but also leads a cult group who worship animals. Michael cares for the following animals in his zoo: a lion, a lioness, a pair of cheetahs, a tiger, and a black panther; as well as a gorilla but he also uses them to kill anyone who gets in his way. Things get out of control when the cops and his wife catch on to plans and he gets a taste of his own medicine.

This is the first time that this film has been released on DVD, thanks to Warner Bros. Archive Collection. They are responsible for releasing some really great gems and this is definitely one of them. Unfortunately there are no special features on this disc but at least we have a decent transfer to DVD on this disc.
