DVD Review “H.P. Lovecraft’s Cool Air”

Starring: Morgan Weisser, Crystal Green, Virginia Dare, Norbert Weisser, Lauren Sutherland
Directed by: Albert Pyun
Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Studio: Lions Gate
DVD Release Date: May 21, 2013
Run Time: 78 minutes

Film: 0 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

Wow, what a piece of shit. When ever I see the name H.P. Lovecraft, I always come running without thinking twice. His short stories are also interested at least but this film adaption of the 1926 story was not one of my favorite. In fact it is completely unwatchable. The acting is absolutely terrible, the score sounds like a soft-core porn and even though the film is less than 80 minutes to drags major ass. The film was made in 2006 and was never realized to now but I understand why after watching this. There are also no special features included on this DVD, not that I would have watched them anyway. Warning: Stay away for this film!

Official Premise: Struggling screenwriter, Charlie Baxter sets out to write his long blocked “great American screenplay” when he suffers a heart attack and his mysterious upstairs neighbor Doctor Shockner comes to his rescue. The Doctor persuades Baxter to stay with him until he recovers fully, and introduces Baxter to a nightmarish world of insane experiments and murder. He knows something must be done to stop the evil that resides in the room at the top of the stairs.

DVD Review “Dark Circles”

Starring: Johnathon Schaech and Pell James
Director: Paul Soter
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: Lions Gate
DVD Release Date: May 21, 2013
Run Time: 86 minutes

Film: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2.5 out of 5 stars

When I see the name “After Dark”, you know that you should expect some decent horror product…but that is not the case here. “Dark Circle” is your typical supernatural horror flick with twist…might I add a bad twist. It is written and directed by Paul Soter, who is a member of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard on films like “Beerfest” and “Super Troopers”. This is a real change for him but he does a good job but I felt the story could have used some kick. Johnathon Schaech and Pell James are great playing sleep deprived parents (I have a 1 year old and felt their pains). There are a few decent jumps as well and great suspense throughout the film but the pay off doesn’t work for me. I would recommend this for a rent, but just don’t hold hopes too high.

Official Premise: When new parents Alex and Penny retreat from the city and move into a place outside town, the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their infant has both of them seeing things. Persistent sightings of a strange woman has each of them wondering if they are suffering from hallucinations, or if their new home holds a dark, supernatural presence. As their fragile grasp on reality spirals into delirium, Alex and Penny find themselves nearly helpless to deal with the horrific truth of what is really going in this house.

“Dark Circle” was only released on DVD from Lionsgate, no Blu-ray love. There are two audio tracks included, a Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 track. The special features are not amazing but worth checking out if you enjoyed the film. There is an audio commentary track with writer/director Paul Soter, Johnathon Schaech and blooger Ryan Turek. It is fun and informative. There is also “Behind-the-Scenes” featurette, with cast/crew interviews. It rather short at just over six minutes but it is pretty decent. Soter does say though in this featurette that he has plans for more horror films, so I am still on board to see what he can come up with next. Lastly, fans of “Beerfest” and “Super Troopers”, be sure to keep an eye out for an quick appearance from Philippe Brenninkmeyer.

DVD Review “Popeye The Sailor: The 1960s Classics – Volume 1”

Voices: Jack Mercer, Mae Questel, Jackson Beck
Studio: Warner Archive
DVD Release Date: May 7, 2013
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Run Time: 409 minutes

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love Popeye The Sailor? If you are a parent, you should take advantage of his lessons to eat your spinach. When I was a kid, I remember my parents used to always say eat your spinach so you can be strong like Popeye. These shorts are really classics. They are also fun to watch when I was a kid and nothing has changed as an adult. I look forward to sharing these with my daughter as well. This release is volume 1 of the classics Popeye cartoons from Paramount, adding up to 72-episodes. If you are a Popeye fan, this is a great release from Warner Archive. The episodes look great and are well represented here. Sign me up for volume 2…and keep them coming Warner Archive!

With TV reruns of the Fleischer/Famous Studios theatrical shorts proving that Popeye still packed a spinach-powered punch that delivered smash ratings, King Features commissioned a new series of Sailor Man shorts under the aegis of executive producer Al Brodax. The TV incarnation of Popeye made up for its scaled back animation with a broadened narrative scope while still staying true to the source. Thanks to the continued use of voice actors Jack Mercer (Popeye), Mae Questel (Olive) and Jackson Beck (Bluto who was now called Brutus) as well as the use of veteran Popeye animation talents who were then working at Paramount Cartoon Studios, these shorts remained authentic. The addition of a number of Thimble Theater comic strip characters making their cartoon debuts – including King Blozo, Toar, and Sea Hag – only added to the shorts “yam what I yam” charm.

Disc 1 consists of the following episodes ranging from 1960-1961: 1. Hits And Missiles, 2. The Ghost Host, 3. Strikes,Spares An’ Spinach, 4. Jeep Is Jeep, 5. The Spinach Scholar, 6. Psychiatricks, 7. The Rain Breaker, 32. Messin’ Up The Mississippi, 33. Love Birds, 34. Sea Serpent, 35. Boardering On Trouble and 36. Aladdin’s Lamp

Disc 2 continue with shorts from 1961. 37. Butler Up, 38. The Leprechaun, 39. County Fair, 40. Hamburgers Aweigh, 41. Popeye’s Double Trouble, 42. Kiddie Kapers, 43. The Mark of Zero, 44. Lastly Disc 3 completed the volume with more episodes but jumps from 1961 back to 1960 for some reason. 61.The Wiffle Bird’s Revenge, 62. Going…Boing…Gone, 63. Popeye Thumb, 64. Where There’s A Will, 65. Take It Easel, 66. I Bin Sculped, 67. Fleas A Crowd, 68. Popeye’s Junior Headache, 69. The Big Sneeze, 70. The Last Resort, 71. Jeopardy Sheriff and 72.Baby Phase.

DVD Review “Picture Day”

Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Spencer Van Wyck, Steven McCarthy, Mark DeBonis
Directors: Kate Melville
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Arc Entertainment
DVD Release Date: May 21, 2013
Run Time: 93 minutes

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

I am usually not a fan of dramatic comedies, but I figured I would give this one a try since it starred Tatiana Maslany. Let’s just say I should have stuck with my gut despite the cast. Tatiana is gaining a lot of steam recently due to her role in BBC America’s “Orphan Black”.  She is ok in this film but she can’t carry the entire film on her own. The story feels like a weak coming-of-age dramedy. I didn’t really end up caring for any things characters and thought they were quite boring. To be quite honest the whole film is quite depressing. Definitely a big pass here!

Official Premise: Forced to repeat her senior year in high school, Claire’s (Tatiana Maslany) reputation is sliding from bad-ass to bad joke. At night, she escapes to would-be rock star Jim (Steven McCarthy), while at school, she bonds with Henry (Spencer Van Wyck), a nerdy freshman she used to babysit. Eventually, Claire learns the difference between sex, intimacy, and friendship.

Arc Entertainment released this film on DVD, which to me is a dying format. Not that Blu-ray would have done anything for this film. The DVD features an Dolby Digital 5.1, which works for the dialogue focused film. There are also no special features included at all which only leads me to be more disappointed for this release. This is Kate Melville’s first film, so I should have given it a little bit of leeway but I just got more and more frustrated as this film progressed. So I wouldn’t wish this film upon anyone is watch, unless you are a die-hard Tatiana Maslany fan.

DVD Review “Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy”

Actors: Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd
Directors: Rob Heydon
Rated: Unrated
Studio: New Video Group
Release Date: May 21, 2013
Run Time: 100 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

I remember when I saw “Trainspotting” for the first time back in 1996. I had never seen anything like it. I couldn’t understand a damn thing they were saying but I freaking loved it. After that I also became interested in Irvine Welsh’s books. The next film adaption we got was in 1998 with “The Acid House”, good but not even close to “Trainspotting”. So its been 14 years since the last adaptation and we get “Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy”. Again not even close as good as “Trainspotting” but not terrible either. If nothing else this film easily kept my attention for the hour and 45 minutes. It doesn’t have the edge that I was really hoping. Overall, I would call this a one-timer.

From the mind of Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) comes a pulse-pounding thriller set against the backdrop of Scotland’s drug-fueled dance scene. When free-spirited Lloyd gets in deep with the local kingpin after a drug deal gone bad, he decides to cut ties and kick old habits for the woman he loves. But when his old business partners come around looking to settle the score, Lloyd must do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if that means getting back in the game and risking it all to get even.

“Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy” packs a great cast including Adam Sinclair (“To End All Wars”), Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville”), and Billy Boyd (“The Lord of the Rings”).  They all deliver great performances throughout.  The film features some great music form Paul Oakenfold, Coldplay and DJ Tiesto.  New Video only released this film on DVD and I feel that Blu-ray could have severed this film much better in terms of presentation.  Top that with that fact that there are zero special features included on this release. I will keep holding my breath for Danny Boyle to finally make “Porno”, the follow up to “Trainspotting”.

DVD Review: GWAR “Electile Disfunction 08”

GWAR
“Electile Disfunction 08”
Slavepit Inc./Hypereal Productions
Chapters: 11

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

Continuing with the long tradition of GWAR films is the latest release from Slavepit Inc. and Hypereal Productions. “Electile Disfunction 08” was shot during the bands 2008 tour which featured the return of infamous GWAR manager Sleazy P. Martini. The DVD follows one of GWAR’s more popular story lines as head Scumdog Oderus Urungus and the other members of GWAR attempt to defend the Frank Sinatra Belts of Total World Domination against an interesting assortment of characters in the Intergalactic Championship Wrestling.

Classic GWAR from start to finish! The production may not be top notch but those familiar with GWAR’s previous films know what to expect and what may be lacking in production quality is made up tenfold with content and laughs. Though nothing beats seeing the band live “Electile Disfunction 08” does a great job putting you as close to the action as possible through a number of different POV camera angles. Watch from the safety of your home as GWAR hack and slash their way through a number of public figures before wrapping up the show with the always popular “Slaughterama”. If your anything like myself and have been stock piling the long list of previous GWAR films then you certainly won’t want to miss this one as it destine to become a classic.

2.) Wilco Chopped
3.) Bile Driver

When I first saw the commercials of “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Quest for the Crystal Mickey”, I laughed at loud since I am a huge fan of Indiana Jones.  I thought that this was a super cute idea both for the kiddies and also their parents. The episode is very clever and includes at a lot of great odes to the adventure genre.  Mickey Mouse takes the role of Kansas City Mickey as he and his friends chase down Plunderin’ Pete ( I just love that name BTW). There is some great music included as well. That darn theme song for Kansas City Mickey has been stuck in my head.  Like with all episodes of “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, there is also some great morals and lessons learned through the show. This is a must have for any fan!

I have seen some places note that this DVD also comes with “Mickey’s Treasure Map Game with Stickers but that was not included with my package, so I am not sure if it is still happening. What is included though as a bonus are some great episodes of the show for kids (and their parents) besides “The Quest for the Crystal Mickey”. The additional episodes are “Donald Of The Desert,” “Donald The Genie,” “Goofy’s Coconutty Monkey,” and “Goofy’s Giant Adventure.” They stick with the theme of the adventure like “Crystal Mickey” and are really fun episodes.  I mean who doesn’t love to call out for Toodles or doung the Hot Dog dance! Parents you know you do! BTW if you don’t have kids you are probably shaking you head right now but trust me they are catchy and you WILL be doing the same thing if you watch this show every single day!  So fans of Disney Junior and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, this is another great release and I highly recommend it!

DVD Review “Beetlejuice: The Complete Series”

Voices of: Stephen Ouimette, Alyson Court, Elizabeth Hanna, Roger Dunn
Created by: Tim Burton
Directed by: Robin Budd
Number of discs: 12
Studio: Shout! Factory
DVD Release Date: May 28, 2013
Run Time: 2160 minutes

Series: 5 out of 5 stars
DVD Release: 2.5 out of 5 stars

“Though I know I should be wary, Still I venture someplace scary; Ghostly hauntings I turn loose… Beetlejuice… Beetlejuice… Beetlejuice!

It’s Showtime! I absolutely love “Beetlejuice”! I grew up watching the film, which scared me as a kid. Which then led me to race home each day from school to enjoy the animated series as well. The show had a different tone than the film but was and has been one of my favorites. This is the first time that the animated series has ever made it onto DVD as a complete series, thanks to Shout! Factory. There were three episodes, “A-Ha”; “Skeletons In The Closet” and “Spooky Boo-tique”, included on the 20th Anniversary DVD of the film. It was enough to get our mouth watering but left us wanting more. Well we finally get our prayers answered here but it is not the ultimate release that I was hoping for.

Official Premise: This quirky series was based on the highly popular 1988 Tim Burton film of the same name. Beetlejuice: The Complete Series features the escapades of Lydia Deetz, a teenage goth girl with a love of all things macabre, and her best friend Beetlejuice, an undead, bug-eating prankster from the Netherworld. The only way Beetlejuice can visit the Outerworld (also know as the town of Peaceful Pines) is when his name is repeated three times, but unfortunately for him that is the same way to send him back!

This Saturday morning cult favorite cartoon has been long-awaited on DVD. This release features all 94 episodes in a 12 DVD box set and is available only from Amazon.com. When revisiting this show for the first time in years, it is better than ever and I enjoyed it still like when I was a kid.  In fact, I actually enjoyed it more with its witty dialogue, tongue-in cheek humor and satire-filled plots.  There were so many great nods to the horror genre. I also forgot how short the first three seasons were while the show was on ABC Saturday mornings.  The first was only 13 episodes and the second and third were 8 each.  When the show switched to Fox Kids, they really gave the series some life with 65 episodes in the fourth season.

The release itself was a bit of a let-down though.  Firstly there are no special features at all included.  I was hoping for something…anything for us fans to dig into but was left unsatisfied.  The slipcase is a little bit flimsy and feels cheap.  The episodes are spaced out in three DVD cases separated with Seasons One, Two & Three in one case and Season Four Part 1 & 2 in the other two. It is great to see the episodes again but they don’t look the greatest. They look like that are from the early 90’s, which they are obviously but I was hoping that Shout! would have done a little bit to restore some of the quality. In fact, some of the episodes actually even look downright blurry. But at least we finally have the complete series right?

DVD Review “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Season Two”

Actors: Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Tabitha St. Germain
Directors: Jayson Thiessen
Number of discs: 4
Studio: Shout! Factory
Release Date: May 14, 2013
Run Time: 570 minutes

Season: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Season two is a very important season for “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic”. If you are not aware but this show is a cultural phenomenon. After the first season of this show, it developed quite the following and it wasn’t just little girls. Bronies formed, which are male fans of “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic”. There has been conventions like BronyCon and this show has really exploded and became very popular. It is also the last season that was under Lauren Faust as the creative director and executive producer for the show.  I see why people enjoy this show and I am sure that my daughter will love this show as she grows up.

Official Premise: The studious Twilight Sparkle may have learned the true meaning and value of friendship through the amazing bonds she’s formed with every pony in Ponyville, but the lessons keep on coming! Join Twilight Sparkle and her friends – Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Apple Jack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and little Spike – as they embark on one crazy adventure after another, leading to the greatest wedding Equestria’s ever seen. And you’re invited!

Shout! Factory has been behind this series since day one and has delivered great releases. I would have love to see this show get a nice Blu-ray release though since it is very colorful and is already shot for HD. The special features included on this season are decent but nothing amazing. There is a live stage reading for “Hearth’s Warming Eve”. There is the cast panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2012. Lastly there are sing-alongs for the kids and downloadable coloring sheets included. I would have loved to seen more focus on the fan base and on the production side but hardcore fans should still enjoy what is here.

DVD Review “The Roman Holidays: The Complete Series”

Created by Hanna-Barbera
Voices of Dave Willock, Shirley Mitchell, Stanley Livingston, Pamelyn Ferdin, Daws Butler, Dom DeLuise, Hal Smith
Distributed by: Warner Archive
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 292 minutes

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

When it comes to Hanna-Barbera, I am always curious to see anything that they have created, especially obscure shows like “The Roman Holidays”. This animated series was aired back in 1972 on NBC, but only ran for 13 episodes. The show is set in 63 AD but has a very modern day feel to it. Daws Butler is a blast voicing Brutus the Lion, who is known best for voicing Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and many more. Dom DeLuise also voices Mr. Evictus and gets some good laughs. It is probably not the best product that Hanna-Barbera ever released, especially since it was canceled after a few episodes but it is worth checking out if you are a fan of classics animated series.

Official Premise: Somewhere between the pre-hysterical Hanna Barbera’s Stone Age of The Flintstones and the fantastic future of The Jetsons lie The Roman Holidays, tackling family life circa AD 63. Augustus “Gus” Holiday (Dave Willock) is the man of the clan, lovely and level-headed spouse Laurie (Shirley Mitchell) keeps things on an even keel while teen-age trouble maker Happius (Stanley Livingston) and child prodigy Precocia (Pamelyn Ferdin) threaten to break the Pax Familia. Housed at the humble Venus de Milo Arms, the Holidays face constant threats from their aptly named landlord Mr. Evictus (Dom DeLuise, in his toon debut) while Gus gets equally harried by his boss, Mr. Tycoonius (Hal Smith) at the Forum Construction Company. It’s a good thing he gets to come home to a Roman’s best friend – his pet lion, Brutus (Daws Butler)! So hop aboard your chariot – it’s time to pay a visit to The Roman Holidays!

Episodes included are: “Double Date”, “The Lion’s Share”, “Star For A Day”, “Hero Sandwich”, “The Big Split Up, “Hectic Holiday”, “Switch Is Which”, “That’s Show Biz”, “Double Dilemma”, “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Chariot”, “A Buried Treasure”, “Cyrano De Happius” and “Father Of The Year”. Warner Archive is releasing this series as part of their Hanna-Barbera Classic Collections. They have been behind releasing many rare Hanna-Barbera show’s as part of their manufacture-on-demand (MOD) service. The episodes are released with their original aspect ratio of 1.37:1. They have not been remastered or restored but have been at least manufactured from the best-quality video master currently available. They look decent but could have used a little sprucing up. They also have a typical Dolby Digital Mono track included, which is the usual for Warner Archive MOD releases.

The minute I gave this DVD to my 11 month daughter, she put smiled ear to ear and put it right in her mouth. So in baby terms that is as good as you can get. Whenever she sees this show on she stops whatever she is doing and just stars and jumps up and down. We watched this DVD multiple times on loop over the weekend and we just can’t seem to get enough of this show. Doc McStuffins is a fantastic show from Disney Junior. It is cute, teaches great lessons for kids and packs some fun and catchy music as well. It even has daddy singing along and waking up with it in my head :-). I know this release is going to be re-watched quite a bit and I can’t wait to see new releases for this show. The Doc is in!

Personally, I am a fan of “”Gulpy, Gulpy Gators!”, as it brings back childhood memories for myself with “Hungry Hungry Hippos”. Along with the episodes, there is also an activity growth cart and stickers included for all your little inspiring doctors to enjoy.

“Dance your cares away

“Fraggle Rock” has always been one of my favorite shows growing up. It also had one of my favorite theme songs from the 80’s, I still have a vinyl record from the show. This release is a great show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Jim Hensen’s classic children series. The series originally aired from 1983 to 1987 and still captures the hearts of its fans today. Watching this show again just makes me yearn for more shows like this again. I am looking forward to showing this show with my daughter as she grows up. Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment is also releasing “Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series Collection” on DVD. Hardcore fans should definitely check that out.

Official Premise: Dance your cares away with this collection of 6 episodes highlighting everyone’s favorite fun-loving furry creatures Fraggles! Get to know Gobo, Red, Boober, Wembly and Mokey as they explore outer space, dodge the Gorgs and learn about themselves and the world around them in this silly compilation.

“Fraggle Rock: Meet The Fraggles” includes the series pilot, as well as five excellent episodes introducing us to each of the series main characters. The episodes included are: “Beginnings”, “We Love You Wembley”, “Boober’s Dream”, “Red’s Club”, “Mokey and the Minstrels”, “Gobo’s Discovery”. These episodes good look a little aged. I do not feel that much work went into restoring these episodes for their 30th anniversary. They are still fun to watch and relive your childhood and for those that are not too familiar with this series, this is a great way to introduce “Fraggle Rock” to a new generation of fans. Besides the episodes, there are no special features included on this DVD.
