Her Universe was launched in 2009 by actress and entrepreneur Ashley Eckstein, and her partner, The Araca Group, known as one of the most innovative theatrical production and merchandise companies in the world. Shakin’ the Indie Film Scene in 3D

April 17, 2012 – Kevin and DeAnna Cooper are ex-studio executives that recently signed a distribution deal for their independent 3D family comedy I HEART SHAKEY, the first film from their company Amarok Productions. The first independent film to be shot entirely in stereoscopic 3D, it is paving a new path for other filmmakers. To better understand what the Coopers have accomplished after leaving careers in the Hollywood studio system, you should know that 95% of independent films never make it to the marketplace. An even higher percentage of films never get a theatrical release. This is the story of “the little engine that could….”

I HEART SHAKEY, was shot in the Chicago area and stars Steve Lemme (Broken Lizard comedian, Super Troopers, Beerfest), Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy franchise), Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation movies), Alfonso Arau (Three Amigos), 12 year old acting phenom Rylie Behr and a rescue dog named Ebony. The movie also touts some of the hottest actors and comedians in Chicago including Andy St. Clair and Greg Holloman (of Second City fame) and award winning stage actress Janet Ulrich Brooks. A full list of credits can be found at their IMDb listing.

I HEART SHAKEY tells the story of a widower, his 9 year-old daughter and their devoted mutt Shakey. The film follows this family of three as they move from a small town to Chicago and are forced to get rid of their dog, who wreaks havoc in their new apartment building. It is a simple heart warming story geared toward kids and families that focuses on the importance of loyalty and keeping the family together. It has recently been approved by the Dove Foundation for family viewing. The teaser trailer is now live on their Kickstarter page.

Talent from the film will attend their red carpet premiere on June 13th in Chicago . Sneak previews over Father’s Day weekend (June 15-17) in Chicago will precede its theatrical and OnDemand release June 29th by Phase 4. The DVD arrives in stores late August. Spotlight Pictures will handle international distribution.

Blu-ray Review “Camelot: 45th Anniversary Edition”

Directed by: Joshua Logan
Starring: Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Warner Bros.
Release Date: April 24, 2012
Running Time: 179 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

This film was based off the classic Broadway musical and it definitely has it problems overall but still manages to entertain. The film runs a very long three hours and definitely drags in parts. The saving grace for the film was the musical numbers and the performances.  I really enjoyed the music and Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave are just stunning. You can just see the amount of production that went into this film, no expenses were spared. The Blu-ray itself is worth picking up if you are a fan of this film for sure and it is a great way to introduce the film to you if you have never seen it.

This 45th Anniversary Edition comes with a Digibook packaging, which contains a lot of great images and information. Also included is a separate CD containing four songs from the score, though I wish they would have included the full CD. The video resolution on the Blu-ray looks great with its 1080p transfer and presented in an 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The audio included is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which is fantastic, especially with the film’s musical sequences.

The special features are decent at best with only two new features for this release. There is a new commentary track by Stephen Farber, which is interesting and very in-depth. There is also a new featurette called “Camelot: Falling Kingdoms”, which runs about 30 minutes and includes interviews and some interesting production information. There are also two featurettes included that were on the previously released on DVD and are only presented in standard definition. The first is called “The World Premiere of Camelot” and takes us back to to 1967 for the premiere of the film. The second is “The Story of Camelot”, which focuses on the “real” Camelot. Lastly there is four theatrical trailers included. Since this film is known for its music, it is sad that their is no Isolated Score track that was on the DVD release.

Synopsis: The oft-told tales of Arthurian legend have always been fertile ground for art. With countless books, films and songs on the subject, there have been many interpretations of Merlin, the Knights of the Round Table, the glories of the kingdom of Camelot and the doomed love triangle of King Arthur, Lady Guenevere and Sir Lancelot du Lac. The musical Camelot, however, remains the most iconic. Consider the historical context of the piece. Originated for the stage in 1960, Camelot coincided with the presidency of a young John F. Kennedy. Kennedy was a big fan of Camelot; he identified with King Arthur and, according to the First Lady, she and the President would often listen to the soundtrack before going to bed at night. Tragically, and ironically, just as Arthur’s rule lasted for one brief, shining moment, so did Kennedy’s, and the press forever linked the two legendary leaders many hundreds of years apart. Camelot is emblematic of JFK and, as such, it is emblematic of an era.

Camelot celebrates its 45th anniversary with the Blu-ray debut on April 24th !

EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS: Ralph Bakshi announces “Wizards 2” script is in the works!

Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Ralph Bakshi this afternoon and he was nice enough to leak us a very exclusive tip. According to Bakshi, there is a script in the works currently for a sequel to his 1977 film “Wizards”.

Here is a quote from Bakshi in our upcoming interview:
“Right now, the head of Dark Horse Comics, Mike Richardson, is writing a script for “Wizards 2″. He and his partner are writing the script and he is very interested in making the movie.  I feel that Dark Horse is really the right team in order to get this project done.”

Bakshi addressed his intentions once the script is done:
“I will definitely read it once it is completed but I doubt I will direct, probably executive produce. I would also contribute storyboards and sketches for the film if needed. In order for it to work though, I feel that it has to also be political important with what is going on today.”

Stay tuned to Media Mikes for more breaking news on “Wizards 2”. We are also trying to get a quote from Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and we suggest to you to reach out to Dark Horse as well at [email protected] and let them know you want “Wizards 2”.  Our full interview with Bakshi will go live next week.

Blu-ray Review “Angels Crest”

Directed by: Gaby Dellal
Starring: Thomas Deckker, Jeremy Piven, Elizabeth McGovern, Mira Sorvino
Distributed by: Magnolia Pictures
MPAA Rating: R
Release Date: April 3, 2012
Running Time: 93 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

In the past year alone, Magnolia Pictures has released some of my recent favorite films. “Angels Crest” is a movie that would normally fly by the waist side and I wouldn’t see. Since it was being released by Magnolia it caught my attention. I am very happy that it did because the film is an emotional train-wreak that won’t allow you to look away. The film is packed with such amazing and powerful performances.

Thomas Deckker, known for his film roles in films like “Freddy vs. Jason” and TV series “The Sarah Conner Chronicles”, really gets a chance to show his drama chops. The film is so emotionally charged that he is able to give his best performance to date. Jeffrey Piven also gives a notable performance as well. What I also liked about this film is the fact that it isn’t a dragging drama. 93 minutes and out the door, the film does not waste time from the moment it starts.

The film follows the disappearance and death of 3 year-old Nate Denton. While going to build a snowman in the hills, the boy wanders away from his father’s truck and disappears. Dealing with his death, Ethan (Thomas Dekker) ends up putting the small foothills community of Angel’s Crest in an up roar. The town blames Ethan for the death and he struggles to accept this accusation. A local prosecutor (Jeremy Piven) with a haunted past of this own goes after Ethan in order to bring justice for the town.

The Blu-ray looks stunning with its 1080p transfer shot in the beautiful snowy mountains of Calgary, Canada. The landscapes are gorgeous and looks really sharp. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track also works well with the films heart pounding score. The special features on the disc are decent overall. There are a few deleted scenes with optional commentary from director Gaby Dellal. There are cast interviews, which does provide some great insight into the film’s story and production. Like all Magnolia release, there is an HDNet’s A Look at Angels Crest, which is a basic featurette. Lastly there is the theatrical trailer included.

After two days of packed panels and costumed fans, Kansas City’s Planet Comicon 2012 came to a close this past Sunday.

Not even unseasonably warm weather or the fact that the University of Kansas’ basketball team was playing for a spot in the Final Four (they made it) could keep fans away from the Overland Park Trade Center in Overland Park, Kansas, just outside of Kansas City.

Drawn to the show by such celebrity guests as Edward James Olmos, Billy Dee Williams and a trio of stars from “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” Planet Comicon 2012 may have been the best attended show in the history of the convention.

Buck Rogers himself, Gil Gerard, remarked to me, “this is the busiest Sunday I’ve ever seen at one of these events.” Gerard and fellow “Buck Rogers” actors Erin Gray and Felix Silla spent the weekend meeting and greeting their fans. Other guests included Robin Thorsen and Amy Okuda from “The Guild,” graphic artists like Bernie Wrightson and Blair Butler, star of G4’s “Attack of the Show.”

Shane DeMink took home the prize for Best Costume. His Captain Jack Sparrow was spot on, right down to the accent.

Legendary Mockbuster Studio The Asylum Greenlights Third Installment

in the Mega Shark Franchise

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 23, 2012) – After fan-favorite Mega Shark battled a giant octopus and a ferocious “crocosaurus”, fans of the franchise have demanded more action from the enormous Mega Shark who can leap thousands of feet in the air and destroy half the Golden Gate Bridge. The Asylum, the motion picture production and distribution company behind films such as Syfy’s “Zombie Apocalypse” and “Battle of Los Angeles,” has met those demands by giving Mega Shark her most dangerous enemy yet, her mechanical  doppelgänger – Mecha Shark!

The Asylum has officially greenlit production on MEGA SHARK VS. MECHA SHARK, a much anticipated third installment in the “Mega Shark” franchise, following Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus in 2009 and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus in 2010.  When Mega Shark returns in this all-new feature film, the government releases the top-secret Mecha Shark to defeat the franchise’s popular monster in a fierce battle that threatens the planet.

The fan response to the Mega Shark franchise has been rabid,” said The Asylum partner Paul Bales.  “In addition to a very persuasive online petition, we found that Mega Shark has taken on a life of her own. We’ve received photos of Mega Shark cakes, toys and games on a near-daily basis, and we thought it was high time she did battle with an iconic Mecha monster.”

Mega Shark’s success was evidenced early on when the studio released the “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus” trailer, garnering 2.5 million online views within the first week. “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus” and “Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus” both have had successful runs on the Syfy Network in the U.S. and have seen great success in the international market.

But one question remains – who will be Mega Shark’s next victim? The Asylum will begin casting later this year.
