Blu-ray Review “Scary Movie V: Unrated”

Actors: Simon Rex, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Katt Williams
Directors: Malcolm D. Lee
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Anchor Bay/Weinstein Company
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Run Time: 88 minutes

Film: 1 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1 out of 5 stars

I have always been a fan of the comedy spoof genre. “Airplane” was and still is my favorite comedy of all-time. “Scary Movie” came in 2000 and was a nice change to the genre. “Scary Movie 2” was not a great follow-up, “Scary Movie 3” was amazing and very funny (before Charlie Sheen went crazy) and then “Scary Movie 4” was another disappointment. So this franchise hasn’t had the best track record, well “Scary Movie V” just puts the nail in the coffin.

One thing, this latest installment does have is an interesting collection of cast including Ashley Tisdale, Simon Rex, Molly Shannon, Heather Locklear, J.P. Manoux, Jerry O’Connell, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Bow Wow, Terry Crews, Mike Tyson Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. But unfortunately this is just one boring gags after another that have no connection to each other and its gets old after the opening scene. Stay away from this at any cost!

Official Synopsis: The Scary Movie series lampoons the greatest in horror and genre fare, and has grossed over $800 million worldwide. This latest installment includes send ups of Paranormal Activity, Mama, Sinister, The Evil Dead, Inception, Black Swan, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and pop culture featuring Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Simon Rex, Jerry O’Connell, Sarah Hyland, Katrina Bowden, Tyler Posey, Shad Moss aka Bow Wow, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Mac Miller and Mike Tyson.

Despite the film being horrendous, Anchor Bay delivered an impressive Blu-ray release with a sharp 1080p video and an DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track sounds good. They released this on a combo pack with a Blu-ray, DVD and an UltraViolet digital copy. In terms of special features like the film, there is nothing worth wild watching here either. There are a bunch of additional boring deleted and extended scenes, come to about 10 minutes more footage.

Blu-ray Review "Paranormal Activity 4: Unrated Director’s Cut"

Actors: Kathryn Newton, Katie Featherston, Alexondra Lee, Matt Shively, Stephen Dunham
Directors: Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Paramount
Release Date: January 29, 2013
Run Time: 87 minutes (Theatrical) / 96 minutes (Unrated)

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2.5 out of 5 stars

I am a big fan of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. I was literally first in line with my sister and fellow fan for the fourth film. I have to say, I was a little bit disappointed. This film was fun and exciting but it didn’t pack the mystery and intrigue that the others had. This release includes both the unrated director’s cut and the theatrical cut of the film.  I watched the unrated cut and I really didn’t pick up on the difference. Also there are two new characters added according to the credits. Even though, the film does works a little better second time though, since I think my expectations were lower. Nonetheless, I still stand behind this franchise and look forward “Paranormal Activity 5” this October, as well as the spin-off “Paranormal Activity: The Oxnard Tapes” later this year. Bring it on Toby!

Official Synopsis: Fourth film in the found footage horror franchise which follows on from events in the first two films. Alice (Newton) and her mother were fine until their new neighbors moved in, but the creepy little kid next door, Robbie (Brady Allen) and his auntie Katie (Featherston) have brought more than just their belongings to the neighborhood. It seems that the demonic presence which has tormented them for years has followed them and is keen on getting to know the neighbors.

Paramount delivers a nice Blu-ray presentation in a combo back including a Blu-ray disc, DVD disc as well as an Utralviolet streaming digital copy.  I am a big fan of the UV digital copies and enjoy this being an added feature to this release.  When it comes to found footage, you have to give the quality of the transfer a big of room since it is shot on various formats.  But “PA4” really delivers a nice clean 1080p transfer with a sharp DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The special features on this release are not that great in terms of quantity.  “The Recovered Files” is the only extra included but it does include about 30 minutes more additional ‘found footage’ (check the link below).  There are a great deal of pre-release footage for “PA4” that did not end up in the final film. So we get a chance to see that footage here and some of it really backs some decent content. If you are a fan of the franchise though, I did enjoy footage and I recommend you checking it out.

Blu-ray Review “Killer Joe: Unrated Director’s Cut”

Actors: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Thomas Haden Church, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon
Directors: William Friedkin
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: December 21, 2012
Run Time: 102 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

“Killer Joe” received some controversy behind it when it was released in theaters with its NC-17 rating. But controversy is nothing new to the Academy Award-winning director, William Friedkin, known best for “The Exorcist” and “The French Connection”. This dark comedy is based on the play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts and it converts well to the screen. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but “Killer Joe” is a real surprise hit of the year. It packs some amazing performance from Matthew McConaughey, which was both ferrous and yet funny. The genre of a dark comedy is always a hard line to walk well, “Killer Joe” may not be for everyone.  But if you enjoy Friedkin then I would definitely recommend checking this unique film out.

Official Synopsis: When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Jose sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like from a modern-day, twisted fairytale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella.

The Blu-ray presentation comes with a sharp 1080p transfer and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio track.  BOth not ground-breaking but very clear and sharp. Since this film was released NC-17 in theaters, the film arrives on Blu-ray in this Unrated Director’s Cut.  There will also be an R-rated DVD version released but I prefer the director’s vision of the film.  The Unrated Director’s Cut will also feature an exclusive audio commentary track from director William Friedkin, highly recommended. The rest of the special features are decent but not spectacular. There is a featurette called “Southern Fried Hospitality: From Stage to Screen”, takes us through from the beginning.  Besides that there is some footage from SXSW including a Q&A with Cast and an intro by William Friedkin.  Wrapping up, there is the Red Band Theatrical Trailer included.

Blu-ray Review “Ted: Unrated”

Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane
Directors: Seth MacFarlane
MPAA Rating: R / Unrated
Studio: Universal
Release Date: December 11, 2012
Run Time: 107 / 114 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Ted” may not be for everyone, but it doesn’t try to hide that fact either. It is in-your-face and up front. With all the superheroes flooding the theaters this past summer, this film was a nice relief. Seth MacFarlane has delivered yet again with this very hilarious and very R-rated comedy that still manages to have a lot of heart. This is his first time directing a feature and it is just what Hollywood was needing. So America, he no just hasn’t taken over TV with his three shows…he know is taken over Hollywood! The film is offense and really uses it’s R-rating well and doesn’t pussy out with its humor. Hopefully if you enjoyed it will leave you with the same “WTF” look that I had after watching.

This Blu-ray release comes with both the Unrated and Theatrical Versions of the film. The 107-minute theatrical cut actually get a nice improvement (and more rauchy comedy) added for its 114-minute unrated extended version of the film. As I wished the film was longer in the theaters, this extended cut is exactly what was needed. But at least they include both and give you the option. One of the best comedies of the year for sure. Congrats MacFarlane for giving Hollywood a kick in the ass!

I have been a “Family Guy” fan since day one..especially after it was canceled. I helped spread the word and even attended the live show with MacFarlane and cast in NYC when it was renewed. In the recent days though, I have went seperate ways with the show as I have lost the taste for its humor. MacFarlane has yet again won me over with this film and his winning ticket is Mark Wahlberg. He completely steps outside from his comfort zone and delivers a really funny performance. The CG effects are great with the rauchy and rude bear Ted, which is of course also voiced by master MacFarlane himself. I am looking for to what they come up with the “Ted 2″…you know it is coming!

Official Premise: Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane delivers his boundary-pushing humor to the outrageous comedy blockbuster that critics are calling ³hysterically funny!² (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) is a grown man whose cherished teddy bear was brought to life as the result of a childhood wishŠand hasn¹t left his side since. Can John¹s relationship with longtime girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis), move forward with his lovably profane buddy on his couch?

Universal delivers a sweet combo pack packing in a Blu-ray + DVD + UV Digital Copy included in this release.  I will be revisiting this film quite often thanks to this Ultraviolet digital streaming copy. “Ted” comes with a nice 1080p video transfer, which does well with what it has to work with. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track works great with the snappy dialogue and vulgar humor to ensure that you don’t miss a single joke.

The special features are a nice complement to this great film.  There is a highly recommend audio commentary track from Seth MacFarlane, co-writer Alec Sulkin and star Mark Wahlberg.  Informative and also funny, wish it had more Wahlberg though. There is 25 minute behind-the-scenes look into thee “The Making of Ted”, which covers all aspect. A little short but jam-packed. There is a short feature on shooting John and Ted’s fight scene in “Teddy Bear Scufflebrawl”. When it comes to comedies, always expect deleted scenes, there are fifteen deleted scenes.  They are short but worth checking out. If that is not enough there is another 10+ minutes of alternate takes and a hilarious gag reel included to finish off this release.

Blu-ray Review “Devil’s Advocate: Unrated Director’s Cut”

Directed by: Taylor Hackford
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, Jeffrey Jones, Connie Nielson
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by: Warner Home Video
Release Date: September 18, 2012
Running Time: 144 minutes

Film: 5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

“Vanity, definitely my favorite sin”. One of my favorite lines any film. Al Pacino gives one of his best roles to date. He is just so fucking evil in this film and yet you still are routing for him to rule. Keanu Reeves also does a great job prior to all his “The Matrix” slow-motion fighting. This film include the Unrated Director’s Cut of the film, though I never really noticed a major difference between the cuts. The film is a ripe 2 hours and 15 mins but it really owns every single minute. I remember sneaking into this film in theaters and running out of the theaters completely in love with it. Well 15 years have passed and I only love this film more. I highly recommend this Blu-ray release, completely worth the upgrade.

The 1080p transfer on the Blu-ray just looks amazing. Warner did up this film right and doesn’t disappoint at all. The audio includes an DTS-HD MA 5.1 track, which works perfectly with the film’s sharp dialogue and of course the amazing score, courtesy of James Newton Howard. Th special features are ports from the 1998 DVD but are still decent. There is a commentary by director Taylor Hackford, decent overall. There are twelve deleted scenes with optional commentary from Hackford (unlike the DVD where it was not optional). Overall, I enjoyed these quite a bit. Lastly there is a theatrical trailer included. I wish they would have done a little more to celebrate the film’s 15th anniversary but overall still a nice release.

Kevin Lomax (Reeves), an ambitious, talented young district attorney, joins a powerful New York law firm headed by the mysterious and charismatic John Milton (Pacino). as Lomax faces the intense seduction of success and money, he is increasingly tempted.

Blu-ray Review “The Dictator: Banned & Unrated”

Director: Larry Charles
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, Chris Parnell, Jessica St. Clair, Jason Mantzoukas
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by: Paramount
Release Date: August 21, 2012
Running Time: 83 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2 out of 5 stars

I feel very honored to review this Blu-ray release and would like to thank the Wadiyan treasury and the Admiral General for their kind donation.  Media Mikes though cannot be bribed ;-). Paramount delivered this Blu-ray to review with a personalized letter from Admiral General Wadiyan and a butt load of Wadiyan dollars.  Unfortunately it doesn’t help me to see the film in any better of light.  The film itself just doesn’t work for me.   It is very funny in parts but then very bland and boring is the rest of the film.  I can’t say that I hated the film because I did laugh quite a bit but overall I was left with calling the film forgettable.   I don’t really see myself bragging about it and will probably never watch again.  I call it a “one-timer”.  The unrated cut of the film just adds more of the vulgarity and boobs, which I actually thought the theatrical cut was lacking. Nonetheless, the cut ends up feeling even more drawn out…and don’t forget this film runs less than 90 minutes already.

The film follows Admiral General Aladeen, who while planning to address the United Nations in New York, to ensure that democracy would never come to the country. He ends up becoming a target for assassination. Even though he survives he is left shaven of his signature beard and wandering the streets of the Big Apple, unrecognized. While Aladeen, most trusted friend, Tahir (Kingsley) brings in a dimwit body double in his place in order to pull the strings and take power. It is up to Aladeen to adapt to everyday life in New York, where he meets and befriends a left-wing activist Zoey (Anna Faris). He plans a way to get his life back and ensure that democracy does not fall into his country or is it learning that his past ways are not what he really is looking for?

Let’s get to the Blu-ray presentation now.  The 1080p comes with an aspect ratio of 2.40:1, which looks good but isn’t going to break any real Blu-ray standards.  Same can be said for the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track.  Don’t get me wrong this film looks and sounds good but for a comedy it doesn’t stand out.  The Blu-ray release comes as a combo pack.  Besides the Blu-ray the film also comes with a DVD disc and a digital copy included.  The special features include basically just two features. There are over 30 minutes of deleted and extended scenes including, some funny and some completely missable.  There is a funny but short music video for “Your Money is on the Dresser” featuring Aladeen. Lastly there is an extended Larry King Interview as seen briefly in the movie.
