Audrina Patridge talks about Maxim's Beach Party & "Scary Movie 5"

Television personality Audrina Patridge is probably best known from the hit reality series “The Hills” where she was one four original cast members. Since the show has ended Audrina has appeared in her own reality series as well as several movies such as “Sorority Row” and “Into the Blue 2”. Media Mikes had the chance to talk with Audrina recently about her appearance at this year’s Maxim Beach Party and her upcoming role in “Scary Movie 5”.

Adam Lawton:  Can you tell us about the Maxim Spring Break event?
Audrina Patridge: This is my second year doing the event in Panama City Beach Florida. I am the grand ambassador for Curve Appeal perfume and cologne. Maxim Magazine and Curve teamed up to put on this Spring Break party. The event features a giant stage built right on the sand next to the ocean. It is really beautiful. There is going to be a bunch of different contests held throughout the break such as hula hooping, push-up contests and of course the booty shake contest. This was one I judged last year and a guy was actually the winner. It is so much fun to see everyone out there having fun. You get to see people of all ages out there. There are also lots of Curve models walking around handing out samples so that not only do the guys and girls on break look good but they smell good as well.

AL: How did you become involved with Curve?
AP: I have always been really big on fragrance as I think it’s important to leave a lasting impression. I get a lot of compliments on the smell of the fragrances and am a really big fan myself. It’s great that we have been able to partner up.

AL: What do you like most about going to Spring Break each year?
AP: I love traveling and have had so many great opportunities to do so. I like getting to meet all the different people as well. I am 27 now and I think everyone deserves a Spring Break no matter how old you are. Fortunately I get to be a part of this and it is just so much fun. Being down here takes me back to my early twenties. It’s just a fun time.

AL: Will you be doing any promotion while you’re down there for “Scary Movie 5”?
AP: I am just there for the Spring Break Party but “Scary Movie 5” comes out April 12th. I did a cameo in the film which was a lot of fun. We filmed my piece in Georgia at this huge, beautiful mansion that was really old. I can’t wait to see how things turned out.

AL: Do you have any other projects coming out that we can be watching for?
AP: Nothing that I can talk about just yet. Everyone has to make sure they get some Curve Appeal and go see “Scary Movie 5” on April 15th.

Blu-ray Review “Mad Monster Party”

Directed by: Jules Bass
Starring: Boris Karloff, Allen Swift, Gale Garnett, Phyllis Diller, Ethel Ennis
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Lions Gate
Release Date: September 4, 2012
Running Time: 94 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
EXtras: 3 out of 5 stars

Lionsgate Home Entertainment is finally bringing one of Rankin/Bass’ classic films “Mad Monster Party” to Blu-ray. This stop-motion animation full-length film is arriving just in time to start getting in the mood for Halloween. The film packs some fun/catchy songs from Maury Laws & Jules Bass and great voice cast including Boris Karloff and Allen Swift. The Blu-ray itself isn’t really much more than an updated port of the 2009 DVD Special Edition release. Nonetheless it is definitely worth the purchase for all stop-motion and Rankin/Bass fans to owe this classic film on Blu-ray.

Premise: “Baron Von Frankenstein has decided to retire as the head of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters. But first, he must inform the other monsters about his plans. How to deliver the news? How else – through a Mad Monster Party! Von Frankenstein’s guests include a who’s who of Halloween favorites, including the Werewolf, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and more. But who among them is fit to be the new head of the monsters?”

The film is being released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, which is also a great bonus. The video looks fantastic with its 1080p transfer and presented in an full screen 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The film shows its age a little and the colors seems a little muted but nonetheless it very impressive transfer. The Monaural DTS-HD Master Audio track is impressive this film and its fun songs. I look forward to introducing this film to my daughter (now three months old) and share it each Halloween.

The special features are the same as the 2009 Special Edition. There are three Behind-the-scenes featurettes including on this release. My favorite was “Mad Monster Party: Making of a Cult Classic”, which features interviews from Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt and Arthur Rankin Jr. “Groovy Ghouls: The Music of Mad Monster Party” is a great but short look at the films music with Maury Laws. The last one is called “It’s Sheer Animagic! Secrets of Stop-Motion Animation”, it is a look into what it takes to work with puppets. Lastly there are two bonus sing-along tracks and a trailer included.

Mario Van Peebles’ “We The Party” Hits VOD and Blu-ray This Month

LOS ANGELES (July 2, 2012) – XLrator Media proudly announces the VOD and DVD release of WE THE PARTY. Written and directed by Mario Van Peebles, WE THE PARTY takes a close look at today’s youth culture. The film stars Snoop Dogg, YG, The New Boyz, The Rej3ctz, The Pink Dollaz, Mario Van Peebles, Michael Jai White, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Tiny Lister, Melvin Van Peebles, Mandela Van Peebles, Simone Battle, Moises Arias, Orlando Brown and Quincy Brown.

The film is available on VOD on all providers on July 19, 2012, and in stores on July 31, 2012 at an SRP of $20.99 for the DVD and $26.99 for the DVD/Blu-Ray combo.

A revealing look at contemporary youth culture, writer-director Mario Van Peebles’ WE THE PARTY shows teenagers as they are, not as adults would like them to be. Set amidst the latest trends in music, dance and fashion, WE THE PARTY is a colorful, cutting-edge comedy set in an ethnically diverse Los Angeles high school during America’s first black president. The film focuses on five friends as they deal with romance, money, prom, college, sex, bullies, facebook, fitting in, standing out, and finding themselves. Evoking such classic teen comedies as The Breakfast Club and House Party but with an attitude and style all its own, WE THE PARTY captures the hopes, confusion, challenges and dreams of today’s teenagers as they plunge headlong into an uncertain future.

The DVD and Blu-ray bonus features include a feature-length commentary by writer-director Mario Van Peebles and actors Mandela Van Peebles and Makaylo Van Peebles, 4 music videos from the film (“Truth,” “She’s a Vegan,” “A Light at the End of the Tunnel,” and “Forever”), and the theatrical trailer.

WE THE PARTY was released in theaters on April 6, 2012 by XLrator Media in association with MVP Filmz.

Book Review “Rankin/Bass’ Mad Monster Party”

Author: Rick Goldschmidt
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Miser Bros Press
Release Date: December 25, 2011

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

When it comes to Rankin/Bass Productions, Rick Goldschmidt is the man you want to go to. He is known best for being the Rankin/Bass Historian and Biographer. You know that when he is writing a book about something it is going to be packed with passion and that an incredible time and effort put into it. “Rankin/Bass’ Mad Monster Party” is no different and is a great homage to the classic 1967 feature film. I grew up watching the work of Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass and it is great to see that someone is keeping their name alive.

The book runs in at 272 amazing pages packed with over 300 images, some that have never been seen before or have been published. Most of the book is black and white but there are over 50 pages of full color pages with amazing photos and artwork from the film. Some of the photos/artwork included are rare concept sketches and storyboards. One feature that I think is amazing is the complete original 1967 shooting script. And what is a Rankin/Bass Production without music? There is also the original sheet music from the title song “Mad Monster Party” written by Jules Bass and Maury Laws. Plus a real treat as to be that a reproduction of the “Mad Monster Party” Dell comic book is included in its entirety.

So if all that is not enough for you then you will look forward to amazing behind the scene interviews from the cast and crew from the film. It is great to get the insight from them about working on the film that is over 40 years old. Of course I can’t forget to mention the amazing foreword by one of the creators himself, Arthur Rankin Jr. It is great to read his praise of the book and the fact that his support it behind it just makes this even better. Overall the book is just such a paper turner and it leaves you hesitant to turn to page to make sure that you absorbed everything before continuing. This is a must buy for fans. I can’t stress that enough…Must buy!

DVD Review “Hollywood Party”

Directed by: No director credited
Starring: Jimmy Durante, Laurel and Hardy, Jack Pearl, Polly Moran, Charles Butterworth
Eddie Quillan, June Clyde, Mickey Mouse, Lupe Vélez, George Givot, Richard Carle, Robert Young, Arthur Treacher, Joe E. Brown, Frances Williams, Ben Bard, Tom Kennedy
Ted Healy and His Stooges
Distributed by: Warner Bros. Archive
Running time: 68 minutes

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

This film really represents the classic MGM films from the 30’s. It is packed with such an amazing cast including all the greats Jimmy Durante, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges and even an appearance from the animated Mickey Mouse. There is also a great animated short, “The Hot Choc-late Soldiers”, created by Walt Disney. This film is funny over the top and completely fun. Even though the talent is fantastic…the music in the film is simply fantastic and you can actually thank the great Irving Berlin for that.  Overall this is a must purchase for this classic gem.

I have to say that this is my first viewing of this film and I am very happy that I came across it. It is also the first time it is appearing on DVD, thanks again to the amazing WB Archive. The special features on the DVD are honestly amazing. There is the original trailer, which is cool to see especially since this film is from 1934. The best feature is an audio vault with 10 audio outtakes from the songs in the film. It also includes unused versions and alternate performances. It is really great to have a feature like this.

Synopsis
The screen’s great Schnarzan (Jimmy Durante) wants to wow the visiting Baron Munchausen (Jack Pearl, reprising his familiar vaudeville and radio character) by throwing him a big, bustling Tinseltown bash. Hollywood Party – 8 directors and 8 writers (2 credited) strong – is the wild, wildly inconsistent but ever fun musical-novelty result, packed with kicky dance montages offering pre-Code chorines and Berkeley-like kaleidoscopic shots, spiked with a color cartoon insert from Walt Disney, muscled up with Schnarzan’s lion-wrasslin,’ and thronged with notables (including Mickey Mouse, Ted Healy and his Stooges and Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy, who put an egg in Lupe Velez’s shoe and are duly repaid). Dress to impress!
