When it comes to Broadway plays being converted into feature films, it is hit or miss.  “Rock of Ages” is an amazing play that translates into a good movie with great music.  This film features the amazing musical hits of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister and more.  The movie gets lost a little in the music, which is a good thing. This release features the extended edition of the film, which features over 13 additional minutes of more songs, more dancing and more laughs.  I really enjoyed the extended cut much more, which is rare in a release. Director Adam Shankman knows how to correctly turn a stage play into a feature-film, like he did with “Hairspray”.   Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones are great but for me personally Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise really steal the show. Must watch for fans of great 80’s music, you will easily find yourself air-guitaring and singing along.

Warner delivers a fantastic Blu-ray presentation.  The 1080p video transfer really looks perfect and showcases the film’s fantastic set designs.  Since music in the film is very important, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 really gets a chance to shine and really belt out the hits.  The special features are equally as good as the film itself.  “Rock of Ages: Legends of the Sunset Strip Hosted by Bret Michaels” let’s you hear from the musicians like Def Leppard, Poison, Whitesnake, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, and more as they chat about the good ‘ole days. “The Stories We Sing” gives the behind the scenes stories on our favorite rock anthems of the 80’s. “Defining a Decade” features the cast/crew as they show us how they created the 80’s.  There is a music featurettes for “Any Way You Want”. Lastly there is a look into the “Rock of Ages” premiere with “Def Leppard – LIVE!”.

Premise: “Rock of Ages” tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.

Blu-ray Review “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Extended Edition”

August 28th brings the first time that Peter Jackson’s visual masterpieces have been available separately on Blu-ray. “The Return of the King” is just such an epic film and really deserves an epic Blu-ray. There is no mistaken that this release is the absolute best presentation you are going to get out of this film. If you are looking to experience this film solo from the rest of the series, I would recommend purchasing this release. To be honest the real selling point for me is the Ultraviolet digital streaming copy available.

This film is just breathtaking on Blu-ray both visual and audio. The 1080p transfer is beyond pristine and presented in an aspect ratio of 2.40:1. The DTS-HD 6.1 ES sound is beyond amazing and is perfect for a good surround sound system. When I think of film that need to be watching on Blu-ray, I can’t help but thinking about this franchise. The film is released in five-disc set with two 50GB Blu-ray discs and three DVDs. Also included is features from BD-Live. I know we experienced the same thing with the “The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy” last year but all of the special features are still on DVD, which is a little disappointing to me personally but obviously they make up for the fact since there are three jam-packed discs with extras.

The final battle for Middle-earth begins. Frodo and Sam (Sean Astin), led by the mysterious Gollum (Andy Serkis), continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) struggles to fulfill his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron, so that the Ring-bearer may complete his quest. The film, which won Academy Awards® in all 11 categories for which it was nominated, took wins for Best Picture, Director, Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Visual Effects, Makeup, Adapted Screenplay, Sound Mixing, Original Song and Original Score.

The 5-disc Extended Edition of “The Return of the King” is very rewarding, as was its predecessors. All of the content from the 2004 extended edition DVD is available, as well as Costa Botes’ feature-length documentary like the “Fellowship” & “Two Towers”. The commentaries on this film are in line with its predecessors only going more in depth due to the shear scale of this film. Honestly by the third film the features do get a little repetitive but mega fans are sure to love every bit of information given.

There has been some talk about the the transfer on this extended edition, but I never had a problem. Warner Bros issued a response that this film was remastered from the original 2K digital production files in order to reproduce the full color imagery of the feature. If you are looking to experience this film solo from the rest of the series, I would recommend purchasing this release.  To be honest the real selling point for me is the Ultraviolet digital streaming copy available.

In this first part of the Trilogy, the young hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring; but this ring is no mere trinket. It is the One Ring, an instrument of absolute power that could allow Sauron, the dark Lord of Mordor, to rule Middle-earth and enslave its peoples. Frodo, together with a Fellowship that includes his loyal hobbit friends, humans, a wizard, a dwarf and an elf, must take the One Ring across Middle-earth to Mount Doom, where it first was forged, and destroy it forever. Such a journey means venturing deep into territory manned by Sauron, where he is amassing his army of Orcs. And it is not only external evils that the Fellowship must combat, but also internal dissension and the corrupting influence of the One Ring itself. The course of future history is entwined with the fate of the Fellowship. The film won four Oscars® for Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, Makeup and Original Score.

The 5-disc Extended Edition of “The Fellowship of the Ring” includes all of the special features that appear on its 2002 DVD release, in addition to filmmaker Costa Botes’ 85-minute documentary, which was previously only available as part of the Limited Edition DVD release. There are four commentary tracks on this release each one is equally good and one is not better than the next. I would like to say it says something for everyone, whether it be explanations from the director, to effects background to cast stories.

Blu-ray Review “The Beast (Special Extended Edition)”

Peter Benchley changed my life with “Jaws” and due to that his work will always hold a special place for me. “The Beast” was never my favorite adaption of his work but it is not terrible either. This release though by Timeless Media Group is a bit disappointing and doesn’t even equate to a proper Blu-ray release. I hate to keep putting this down but I feel like it is more of a DVD upscale than a Blu-ray.

“The Beast” stars William L. Petersen (“CSI”) as Whip Dalton in this battle of man against the darkest secrets of the ocean deep. When a large, strange claw is discovered in the small town of Graves Point, marine biologist Dr. Herbert Talley (Ronald Guttman), identifies it as belonging to a rare giant squid. The Dr. and Whip Dalton set out to hunt this beast. What is cool about this release is that it is the full uncut Special Extended Version. It features almost 80 minutes of restored footage from the original TV mini-series release.

The Blu-ray packaging is lame and badly photoshopped. The video resolution only includes an 720p transfer, with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. I will give this a little bit a leeway since it was made in the 90’s but the standard 4:3 release just eeks me on Blu-ray. The audio is only Dolby Digital 2.0 track, no bad overall but nothing special. To top this off, there are absolutely no special features. All you get is the movie and a scene selection menu.

Blu-ray Review “What’s Your Number? Ex-tended Edition”

Since “Scary Movie” series, Anna Faris’ films really haven’t appealed to me, this one is no different. In fact I think it might be the worst one and she seems to spend a lot of time shows off her fake boobs. I am a fan of Chris Evans but it is sad that he is in this film the same year as the great “Captain America: The First Avenger”. But I guess for woman watching this film he walks around naked half the movie and I am sure they will enjoy it more. The film has terrible pacing and feels long after the first 30 minutes. The film does have some decent yet awkward  brief cameos from SNL’s Andy Samberg as a creepy puppeteer and Reno 911’s Thomas Lennon as a creepy gynecologist.

After losing her job, Ally (Anna Faris) reads a magazine article called “What’s Your Number?”, which tells the average number of people America sleeps with.  Ally realizes that her number is nearly double the average at 19.  She decides to track down her ex-boyfriends in hopes to find one to marry and to avoid going over 20 men that she has slept. Ally gets some help from her neighbor Colin (Chris Evans), who sleeps around, so guess what happens next while she tracks down her past exes.

The “ex-tended” unrated cut just adds 11 minutes to the already unbearable 106 minutes. Just to note there is also a DVD and digital copy of the movie included in case actually enjoyed it.  The special features on the disc are also lame, There are about 17 minutes of deleted scenes, nothing worth wild. The gag reel is decent and runs about 7 minutes and that is it on the features besides a trailer and some previews for upcoming Fox films. No audio commentaries or behind-the-scenes features, even though I wouldn’t watch them anyway.

Blu-ray Review “Green Lantern: Extended Cut”

I am probably one of the few people that really enjoyed this movie.  I thought that it was very entertaining and even though it was a little short it still delivers a good punch.  In this Blu-ray the film is presented in two formats, the theatrical extended cuts which adds almost 10 minutes to the film.  I felt like the extended cut added a little more to the film but not much.  Honestly I also felt the same way with another Warner Bros. release “Sucker Punch”.  I thought the extended cut was good but didn’t do much extra to “wow” me.  I have to add that this film is much better viewed in 3D, especially since a good portion of the film takes place on an alien planet.

Ryan Reynolds did a good job with this character and hopefully sets it up to get a little more breathing room if they decided to do a sequel.  I think that audiences this summer where just superhero-ed out by the time this was released.  The video on the Blu-ray presentation is very clear and crisp.  Even though the sound is not 7.1, it is still extraordinary using DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.  Fans of this film who own a 3D player, make sure to get this film in 3D if you have choice.  If you haven”t seen this film and are interested in giving it a chance, do not hesitate this release is will not leave you unsatisfied and it is personally my favorite superhero movie of the year.

The extras on the disc include a great feature called “Maximum Movie Mode: Green Lantern’s Light”.  It runs about three hours and has Green Lantern comicbook writer Geoff Johns taking us on an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the film.  It focuses on the development, special effects,  character designs and much more and does it while showing the film. There are a few production featurettes including “The Art of Green Lantern,” “Weapons Hot: The U.C.A.V. Dog Fight,” “Reinventing the Superhero Costume,” “Ring Slinging 101,” “We Are the Corps,” “Acting Under 10 Pounds of Silicone,” “Guardians Revealed” and “When Parallax Attacks.”  They total about 50 minutes in length and are definitely worth a watch for sure! The next feature is called “The Universe According to Green Lantern”, which is a trip into the fandom behind the comic book with interviews from the DC Comics artists, writers and executives, as well as filmmakers and fans.  The feature “Ryan Reynolds Becomes the Green Lantern” shows the transformation for Ryan Reynolds into the Green Lantern with CGI.  There are  five deleted scenes that are worth a watch but nothing fantastic.  The first issue of “Justice League” from “The New 52” DC Comics relaunch is also included on the disc as a digital comic.  There is a preview of the new TV series, “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” and has a col besides the scenes look…it has me hooked for sure.  The last feature is not related to “Green Lantern” but if you are fan of “Batman: Arkham City” you are going to love the  PS3 code to suit up as Sinestro Corps Batman.  Also included is the new UltraViolet Digital Copy, the new service is really cool and allows streaming or downloading to a variety of devices.

SYNOPSIS
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker head up an all-star reunion of the explosive Fast franchise set in sultry Rio de Janeiro. Former cop Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker, Fast & Furious, Takers) and his girlfriend Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster, Fast & Furious, “Dallas”) bust Mia’s brother Dom (Vin Diesel, Fast & Furious, The Chronicles of Riddick) out of prison, blasting across South America to elude the authorities. Finding themselves backed into a corner in Brazil, they assemble an elite team of top racers to help pull off the one last job that could mean freedom for them all. But hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson, Faster, The Other Guys) is hot on their trail, and so is a corrupt and powerful businessman who wants them dead. When Hobbs and his strike force launch an all-out assault to capture the Torettos and their team, he can’t separate the good guys from the bad. Instead, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey…before someone else runs them down first.
