Electric to Handle International Distribution

LOS ANGELES (November 8, 2013) – Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the military thriller BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB at the 2013 American Film Market. BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB marks the directorial debut from rising filmmaker Luke Moran, who also wrote, produced and starred in the film.  Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings trilogy), Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left) and John Heard (Runner Runner) also co-star.  The film is presented by acclaimed filmmakers Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, Traffic) and Marshall Herskovitz (The Last Samurai), who also executive produced the picture with Rogan Donelly. BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB is scheduled for a theatrical release in March 2014.  Vertical Entertainment’s President Rich Goldberg announced the deal today.

“BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB is a powerful story based on true events that shocked the world in 2004,” says Goldberg.  “Director Luke Moran delivers a compelling film with powerful performances, demonstrating why he’s a triple threat and one to watch for.  We are very fortunate to be a part of his feature debut.”

The deal was negotiated by Peter Jarowey on behalf of Vertical Entertainment and Resolution on behalf of the filmmakers.

Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment is handling international distribution and will be introducing the title at the upcoming American Film Market. Electric’s Head of International Distribution Sonia Mehandjiyska negotiated the deal on behalf of the company.

BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB explores a forbidden friendship between an American soldier and an Iraqi detainee during the infamous torture scandal in the world’s most notorious prison: Abu Ghraib.

As “Smokey and the Bandit” is easily in my top 10 of all time favorite films I would be remiss if I didn’t remember the film’s creator, Hal Needham. Needham, whose Hollywood career took him from stunt man to director to Academy Award honoree, died earlier this week after a short battle with cancer. He was 82.

A paratrooper during the Korean war, the Arkansas-born Needham relocated to Hollywood after the war where he found work as a stuntman. After being hired to be Richard Boone’s stunt-double on the television western “Have Gun, Will Travel,” Needham quickly worked his way up to becoming one of the most sought after stuntmen in the business. In the 60s he worked in such classic westerns as “How the West Was Won,” “Little Big Man” and “McClintock.” He became Burt Reynold’s stunt-double and the two struck up a friendship that would last a lifetime. When he wasn’t standing in for Reynolds, Needham helped modernize the profession, introducing such safety features as inflatable air bags.

After getting a taste of filmmaking as a second unit director, Needham wrote a script entitled “Smokey and the Bandit” and showed it to his pal, Reynolds. Reynolds liked it so much he used his clout to get it made with Needham behind the camera. Since it’s 1977 debut, “Smokey and the Bandit” has grossed over $300 million worldwide. Needham and Reynolds teamed up again for an inside look at the world of stuntmen with “Hooper.” Other Needham/Reynolds collaborations include “Cannonball Run” and it’s sequel as well as “Stroker Ace.” He also wrote and directed (4) “Bandit”-based television movies.

In 2012 he became the second stuntman, after Yakima Canutt, to receive an honorary Academy Award for his stunt pioneering and film career.

It’s one of the most iconic images in film. Steve McQueen jumping a motorcycle over a barrier fence as a prisoner of war on the move in 1963’s “The Great Escape.” On Saturday, November 9th, Omaha film historian Bruce Crawford will present, as his 33rd Classic Film Salute, a 50th Anniversary presentation of “The Great Escape.” Crawford’s special guest of honor for the event will be one of the film’s stars, David McCallum. Mr. McCallum, probably best known as secret agent Ilya Kuriakin from television’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” currently co-stars on the popular television series “NCIS.” Mr. McCallum will introduce the film, discuss his career and will be available for autographs.

Also on display will be a replica of the motorcycle McQueen used in the film. Noted artist Nicolosi will unveil the U.S. Postal Service Commemorative Envelope he designed honoring the film. The screening will be an outstanding way to celebrate the Veteran’s Day weekend.

The film will be shown at 7:00 pm on November 9th at the Joslyn Art Museum’s Witherspoon Hall Theatre in Omaha, Nebraska. Proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Nebraska kidney Association. DreamWorks Animation is known for turned their successfully films franchises into successful animated shows. They did it with “Madagascar”, “Kung Fu Panda”, “How to Train Your Dragon” and even “The Croods” is already on its way to the small screen. “Monsters vs. Aliens” is the latest of the films to be given the TV treatment. I have to admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of the film itself. I thought it was good but not the best thing to come out of DreamWorks Animation. I also feel that maybe its time has passed a little. I could have seen this be more appealing a few years ago but with no sequel following the first film, this series is not Dreamworks hottest property. The episodes are still worth watching if you like the film.

Official Premise: Get ready for a world of hilarious monster mischief and alien antics in this all-new animated TV series inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s ginormous hit movie Monsters vs. Aliens. Join team leader Susan, muscle-bound Link, ingenious Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., and B.O.B., the gelatinous blob, as the residents of the government containment area embark on fun-filled adventures under the not-too-watchful eye of General Monger!

The following episodes are included: “Welcome to Area Fifty-Something”, “It Came…On a Field Trip / Educational Television”, “Danger Wears a Diaper / The Toy From Another World”, “Flipped Out / The Wormhole Has Turned”, “The Bath Effect / The Fruit of All Evil”, “The Two Faces of Dr. Cockroach / The Thing With One Brain”, “Fremeny Mine / Maximum B.O.B.”, “Night of the Living Dog / Attack of the Movie Night”. Like “The Penguins of Madagascar”, the episodes are 11 minutes each, which does works well for the show and keeps it fast pace. This DVD does not come with special features besides the episodes but within those episodes there are nearly three hours of action and comedy. Also included is a digital copy of the episodes and game app collection. There is also a promise of further installments with “Supersonic Joyride” arriving on DVD Spring 2014, so keep an eye out for more.

“STRING THEORY” AN UNCONVENTIONAL ACOUSTIC MUSICAL DRAMA DEBUTS OFFICIAL TRAILER 

The Independent Short Film Directed By Jonathan Pezza Stars Abraham Benrubi, NBC’s “The Voice” Contestant Paulina Cerrilla, And Newcomer Thien Nguyen

LOS ANGELES, CA – The trailer for the independent short film String Theory, a heartfelt musical drama that follows the interwoven lives of three struggling musicians, has now been made public. The highly anticipated short, written and directed by Jonathan Pezza, starsAbraham Benrubi (U-Turn, ER, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose), Paulina Cerrilla (NBC’s The Voice, Season 3), newcomer Thien Nguyen, Kee Chan(Mission: Impossible II, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), and Brad Carter (Smashed, Justified).

The film, produced by Paper Windows LLC, is an unconventional “acoustic” musical that follows three singer-songwriters in Los Angeles whose lives collide in a 24-hour period.  Aurora (Paulina Cerilla),  a homeless street musician whose belief in herself carries her through her troubled life, Patsy (Abraham Benrubi) a faded ex-rockstar at a crossroads in his life, and the intensely conflicted Yun (Thien Nguyen), who contends with her father (Kee Chan) over his disapproval of her life choices. All three are strangers, unknowingly connected by their love and need for music. String Theory follows each of their stories, until their lives intersect for a brief moment that changes each in a profound way.

All three actors were drawn to the piece because of the story and its musical aspect. “The script itself is written like a song and I found that to be a really unique and special way to tell the story,” says Abraham Benrubi. At the very core of String Theory lies the music, weaving and guiding the paths of the protagonists to each other and the next step of their lives. Director and writer Jonathan Pezzacomposed the four original songs featured in the film: About Home, Breathe, Ballad of a Falling Star, and the title track String Theory, all of which will be available on iTunes. “I believe that great art comes from challenging yourself to do the things that scare and intimidate you most,” states Pezza. “String Theory is not only a beautiful story about the struggle to define oneself, but the music that the film’s three characters sing and play bears forged and tempered pieces of my experiences.”

The interweaving musical storyline called for a special approach to sound recording as well. Each artist was recorded live on location singing to special click tracks that they heard through earpieces, allowing them to harmonize and perfectly sync with one another, despite being filmed and recorded at different times. “Our approach required lots of rehearsals, however the results are beautiful, honest, and in the moment recordings that heighten the emotion of the piece,” says producer Shaela Cook.

The film was funded through Kickstarter and the generous sponsorships from Imagecraft Productions and HotPixel Inc. Imagecraft providedall the production equipment for the film including: the Sony PMW-F55, lenses, video village monitors, a complete 5 ton grip and electric package, sound and communication equipment, and production support equipment. HotPixel provided DIT services and dailies and will be providing all post production services including color grading and visual effects. President of HotPixel, Art Freed and Jason Been, President of Imagecraft, both serve as Executive Producers on the project. “We chose to be a part of this project not only because of our relationship with Jonathan, but because we believe in fostering independent filmmakers with a unique and creative voice,” stated Jason Been.

Fans who are addicted to the series and itching for another hit can now indulge in more than two-hours of never-before-seen footage in a ground-breaking series documentary exclusively in the box set, which comes packaged in a collectible replica barrel representing part of Walter White’s dark legacy.  The all-new documentary chronicles the making of the final season, from filming the first table read to the very last day on set and everything in between, including Bryan Cranston inviting the camera in to his Albuquerque living room for the first reading of the final script with Aaron Paul.  The box set also contains all bonus features from previously released seasons (including retail exclusives formerly only available in select stores), a Los Pollos Hermanos apron and a collectible booklet with a letter from Gilligan, as well as a commemorative Breaking Bad challenge coin designed and created by Gilligan exclusively for this set as a token of appreciation to fans for making the Breaking Bad journey.

Synopsis:
BREAKING BAD follows protagonist Walter White (Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Gunn) and teenage son (Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a slim chance to survive. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family’s financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in this world. The series explores how this fatal diagnosis transforms Walt from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.
