Etta James dead at age 73

Etta James, whose version of the 1941 standard “At Last” is one of the most popular recordings of all time, died today from complications due to leukemia. She was 73. She passed away just three days after bandleader Johnny Otis, who discovered her, passed away.

Born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles, she was raised by an almost absentee mother who told the young girl that her father was the famous pool player Minnesota Fats. Years later she met him but he never admitted or denied being her father. Due to her mother’s many problems James was mostly raised by Lula and Jesse Rogers, family friends who owned a rooming house her mother used to live in.

She was performing in a female group known as the Peaches when Otis spotted her, advising her to rearrange her first name and become Etta James. The two co-wrote the hit “Roll With Me, Henry,” which was a reply to the popular Hank Ballard and the Midnighters’ hit, “Work With Me, Annie.” Her first “big” song was the ballad “I’d Rather Go Blind,” which was later covered by such singers as Rod Stewart, B.B. King and Beyonce’, who sang it while portraying James in the film “Cadillac Records.”

In 1960 she signed with Chess Records and released her debut album, “At Last!,” at the end of the year. In 1961 the title track was released as a single, reaching #2 on the Rhythm and Blues chart and #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. “At Last” would become her signature song. She stayed with Chess Records until 1978. In 1993 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming one of only thirteen women inducted as a solo performer.

Interview with Bob Pantella

Bob Pantella is the drummer for Cycle of Pain, Monster Magnet, Riot God and Atomic Bitchwax. His band Riot God is set to release their second album at the end of January titled “Invisible Empire”. Media Mikes had a chance to catch up with Bob recently to discuss the new album and how he manages to juggle playing in four different bands.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about Riot God’s upcoming album titled “Invisible Empire”?
Bob Pantella: The album actually came out in Europe at the end of November and will be available here in the states starting January 31st. This is the bands second record and I am really excited for it to be released. The album is a little bit heavier than the first album and I think it came out really good. We are very happy with it. At this point I am actually really looking forward to doing another one. (Laughs)

AL: How do you think it compares to the first album?
BP: The heavier approach was definitely on purpose. During the recording of the first record we were sort of scatter brained and didn’t know how it was going to come out. We have been around for a few years now and have worked on our sound. Things this time came together relatively easy.

AL: Did you try to incorporate any new beats or styles into you’re playing on the album?
BP:  We all have our own styles which is something you don’t realize until you listen back to things. We decide is something cool or if it sucks and then put the pieces together. There is thought behind what we do but it is more related to editing ourselves. We spent a lot more time on this album and we were a lot more focused.

AL: Are there any tracks that stand out as favorites?
BP: Picking a track for me is pretty difficult as I am so close to the work. I wish I could hear the songs with fresh ears but that’s impossible. Each time I listen to the album I like something else. At this point I like the song “Tomorrows Today”. At first I liked “Firebrand” but then I kind of got sick of that one. I have listened to all of these songs around 500 times.

AL: Do you have any projects in the works with your other bands?
BP: Cycle of Pain has a few songs in the works. Between JD and me playing all the time we are away a lot so that album is going to take a little bit of time. Monster Magnet has plans to do a new record in the spring.

AL: Do you find it hard splitting your time between 4 bands?
BP: If I didn’t like it I would quit. Playing takes up about 95% of my time. I haven’t been out of the studio in 4 days as we are recording some Riot God material for a special tour release. Monster Magnet is recording a track for an upcoming tribute album and Atomic Bitchwax is recording and writing for an upcoming spring release.

AL: Do you have any other plans for 2012?
BP: Things are pretty well booked up but there are still things being filled in. I am going to be in Germany with Riot God playing the Wacken Festival and then I will be in Europe again with Monster Magnet sometime in June. Things are just nonstop.

DVD Review “Tall Story”

Directed by: Joshua Logan
Starring: Anthony Perkins, Jane Fonda, Murry Hamiliton
Distributed by: Warner Bros. Archive
Run Time: 91 minutes

Our Score: 4 out of 5 stars

This film is such a classic and thanks to WB Archive, you are able to own this gem on DVD. It stars a very young Anthony Perkins and Jane Fonda (in her first role ever). They are amazing together in the film and really give wonderful performances. Murry Hamilton (Mayor Vaughn from “Jaws”) also gives a funny performance. This film definitely packs the star power and is a real treat to watch.  The story of the film is just so simple and sweet…don’t forget to mention funny as well. If you are looking for a good trip back to 1960, this is a must to purchase for sure.

The restored film looks amazing on DVD and shines in its black and white picture. The film is presented in widescreen format 16×9 1.85:1. The sound is also superb restored as well. I really enjoy this classics being restored and I look forward to future releases from WB Archive. Like all release though know from WB Archive there are no special features but at least we finally get this film restored on DVD.

Synopsis: Jane Fonda wants a man she can look up to: a basketball player. In her debut movie, Fonda plays a college coed with a clear-cut goal: convince all-American hoopster Anthony Perkins that a bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean unmarried! From the moment the future two-time Academy Award® winner* spins her bicycle across campus (and headlong into two professors) to the romantic fadeout, it’s clear she possesses that quality called starpower. Footlight legend and longtime Fonda family friend Joshua Logan directed this frisky farce. The polished supporting cast includes the always engaging Ray Walston, Anne Jackson and Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Marc Connelly (recreating his Tony®-nominated Broadway turn). Fonda has grown into an extraordinarily tall Hollywood legend. And it all started with her in Tall Story. * Best Actress for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978).

DVD Review “Limelight”

Directors: Billy Corben
Starring: Peter Gatien, Michael Alig, Ed Koch, Howard Safir
MPAA Rating: R
Studio: Magnolia Home Entertainment
Run Time: 102 minutes

Film: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I remember the night of my prom pulling up the cathedral doors of Limelight club. It was an experience unlike an other. The club was the known hotspot in the 90’s in NYC. Peter Gatien was the known as the king of the New York City club scene. He was not only the owner of Limelight though, he also owned legendary hotspots like Tunnel, Palladium, and Club USA. The film itself was interesting overall but felt like it could have worked better as a 60 minute special.

The film told the story of the eye-patch-wearing Ontario native, Peter Gatien, and how he ran his nightclubs in Manhattan starting in 1983. It showcases, the rise of the clubs during the years it was successful. It also focused years of legal battles and crackdown with drugs during the mid-90’s. Peter was definitely had his share of struggles during that time and seems to be given a bum-rep even being sent back to Canada only due to tax evasion charges. The film does have some interesting interviews from Gatien himself, as well has other his past employees and friends.

The special features on the DVD are decent overall. Though basically the only real feature is about 30 minutes of deleted scenes, they surely are worth watching if you enjoyed the film. Also included is a trailer for the film. If you are familiar with the NYC nightclub scene or not familiar and interested…you might want to consider checking this out.

Interview wtih Papa Joe Aviance

Papa Joe Aviance is a dance music performer best known for performance with Lulu on the track “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”. His current song is working its way up Billboard Dance charts. Media Mikes had a chance recently to speak with Papa Joe about his music and future plans.

Adam Lawton: What made you first want to get into music?
Papa Joe Aviance: I have been passionate about music all of my life. I grew up playing the violin and I was also in the marching band. Music is something I have been around all of my life. When I first experienced club music it was like church for me. Feeling the grooves and beats was very magical and I fell in love with it. Music in general is something that I just really love!

AL: How was it getting to work with Lulu on “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”?
PJA: Amazing! I had danced to her tracks many times in the clubs and to have the opportunity to work with her was a blessing in disguise. My demo had been sent to Kult records and that day was the same day the originally rapper on the track was fired. They liked my voice and if would mind doing the rap on the track. Next thing I know its number 6 on the Billboard dance charts.

AL: When you were working on the track did you think it was going to be as big as it turned out?
PJA: Not at all. When it did get as big as it did I saw myself on the video and I knew I had to change my appearance. I knew I just couldn’t look like I did. I remember going to a local sports bar and hearing that song on the juke box. I just couldn’t believe it. From there I really got the motivation to lose a bunch of weight and was the next big thing to happen to me after that song was released.

AL: Can you tell us about your new track titled “Live For Life”?
PJA: I had Willy Sanjuan at a music conference about a year and a half ago. I was there promoting “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”. He and I had been communicating through email and through the process of my weight loss I started writing this track. We recorded and submitted it and now it’s being promoted everywhere. I am really happy and proud of the track. This really is my very first solo track.

AL: How was it going into the studio by yourself for the first time?
PJA: It was fun and exciting. I love being in the studio and getting to brainstorm material. This new track is kind of about being passionate and doing what you love.

AL: Can you tell us about Papa Joe Network Productions?
PJA: That sort of came into play about 2 years ago. I had helped with some things on the “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life” video. During my weight loss journey I decided to document it. From there I started working on other projects besides my own. I like trying to help people get their message out.

AL: Do you have any other upcoming projects?
PJA: I am currently working with a few charities right now filming their events. Besides filming for those groups I am also involved heavily as a member. Next year I am planning to do a Walk Across America tour. I am planning to visit 10-15 cities to promote not only my new song but a healthy and active lifestyle. I plan to document the whole thing and submit it to festivals when it’s all done.

Book Review “Rankin/Bass’ Mad Monster Party”

Author: Rick Goldschmidt
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Miser Bros Press
Release Date: December 25, 2011

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

When it comes to Rankin/Bass Productions, Rick Goldschmidt is the man you want to go to. He is known best for being the Rankin/Bass Historian and Biographer. You know that when he is writing a book about something it is going to be packed with passion and that an incredible time and effort put into it. “Rankin/Bass’ Mad Monster Party” is no different and is a great homage to the classic 1967 feature film. I grew up watching the work of Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass and it is great to see that someone is keeping their name alive.

The book runs in at 272 amazing pages packed with over 300 images, some that have never been seen before or have been published. Most of the book is black and white but there are over 50 pages of full color pages with amazing photos and artwork from the film. Some of the photos/artwork included are rare concept sketches and storyboards. One feature that I think is amazing is the complete original 1967 shooting script. And what is a Rankin/Bass Production without music? There is also the original sheet music from the title song “Mad Monster Party” written by Jules Bass and Maury Laws. Plus a real treat as to be that a reproduction of the “Mad Monster Party” Dell comic book is included in its entirety.

So if all that is not enough for you then you will look forward to amazing behind the scene interviews from the cast and crew from the film. It is great to get the insight from them about working on the film that is over 40 years old. Of course I can’t forget to mention the amazing foreword by one of the creators himself, Arthur Rankin Jr. It is great to read his praise of the book and the fact that his support it behind it just makes this even better. Overall the book is just such a paper turner and it leaves you hesitant to turn to page to make sure that you absorbed everything before continuing. This is a must buy for fans. I can’t stress that enough…Must buy!

Book Review “Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film”

Author: Ian Nathan
Hardcover w/slipcase: 176 pages
Publisher: Voyageur Press
Release Date: September 17, 2011

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

When this book says that it is the definitive story of the making of “Alien”, they were not exaggerating.  This book is extremely thorough and very descriptive. It also comes in a very impressive slipcase, which adds a lot of class to this already perfect homage to the film. Each page are packed with photos, artwork and even Ridley Scott’s own storyboards. There are  also ten reproduced artifacts enclosed in envelopes throughout the book. This brings a whole new aspect to the book.

“Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film” covers from the making of the film to its road to becoming a cult phenomenon.  It is illustrated beautifully and looks very high quality, especially in the photos.  The interviews and stories included are extremely interesting and there is also great insight into filmmaking including the some of the camera tricks used on the production. The general flow of the book also work really well and keeps the book a real page-turner.

I think it is really great that we get to check out not only Ridley Scott’s own annotated storyboards but also polaroids from the shoot and also script pages.  Of course no “Alien”  book is complete with out some concept artwork of the crazy brain of H.R. Giger.  There is also some really cool sketches and construction blueprints for the the crew’s ship, Nostromo and also costume designs by Moebius. If you are a fan of behind the scenes photos like me, they you are going to also really enjoy a bunch of never-before-seen shots of the cast and crew.  Overall this book is a no-brainer and it will easily leave all “Alien” fans 100% satisfied.

Interview with Graham Colton

Graham Colton is a singer/songwriter who has had his material featured on “American Idol” and who has toured with acts such as John Mayer, Counting Crows and The Dave Mathews Band. Media Mikes had a chance recently to talk with Graham about his latest release “Pacific Coast Eyes Vol. 2”.

Adam Lawton: Can you tell us about your latest release.
Graham Colton: The album is titled “Pacific Coast Eyes Vol. 2”. It is sort of a bonus EP release that was really a lot of fun to make. Now that I am an independent artist again I can pretty much do what I what on my own schedule. This release is just that. The EP contains 3 songs from “Pacific Coast Eyes” and 3 new songs. Lately I have been a fan of putting out things that I think my fans will like right away rather than using the old model of things and make them wait a year or two.

AL: I assume you are a fan of that type of freedom as an artist?
GC: I definitely like the fact that there are no rules. I think with the way the business is going these days the original set of rules people went by are now being redefined. I think this is  cool because with the touch of one button you have so many different options to get your work out there. I am really embracing this new way of doing things. When I first started I think I caught the tail end of how things used to be done where you sign a big record deal and release a huge album. I had a great time working that way but there are just so many new ways of doing things now. Moving forward is something that is really good.

AL: How do you feel the new tracks on this release compare to your previous work?
GC: You always hope that with each release you move forward another step. I have stopped putting the pressure on myself to figure out what material is better. I think I have grown as songwriter both in ways I think are good and in ways I think that my hurt me. A lot of times I am thinking some of the best songs I have ever written were the ones I wrote in my bedroom when I was 17. During that time it was just me, four chords and an out of tune guitar. All I wanted to do was impress girls. On the flip side there is always a cool balance of keeping things as simple and as honest as I can while at the same time adding in all the experience I have gained and learned along the way.

AL: What are your tour plans for this release?
GC: I just wrapped up a tour called the “Go National Tour”. The tour was a partnership between me and cngnow.com where I traveled in a natural gas vehicle and documented the entire tour. I plan to do a spring tour and more partnerships with cngnow.com. My partnership with cngnow.com has been great as this is the first time I have really stood up for a cause that I believe in. I felt so strongly about this that I actually approached them with this idea. It was a pretty organic process. I started looking out what type of eco footprint we as musicians who earn our living out on the road leave behind after we have toured all over. I am very proud of what we have accomplished thus far and you can actually go to the site to see just what we have done.

AL: Do you have any other upcoming projects in the works for 2012?
GC: I am working on a few things right now that I would describe as being a little bit left of center for me. There are some collaboration’s that have started however it is still a little bit too early to talk about those. I have been very excited as of late. This is something that tends to happen when I am about ready to make new music. I seem to have the ability to visual the record before I even write anything. I don’t know the exact picture yet but I do know I want to make a left turn and see what all shakes out. This is both exciting and really scary.

Film Review “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”

Starring: Thomas Horn, Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks
Directed by: Stephen Daldry
Rated: PG 13
Running time: 2 hours 9 mins
Warner Brothers

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

Oskar Schell got out of school early that day. He went home and saw several messages on the family answering machine. Turning on the television he is puzzled by the images of the burning buildings on screen. It was Tuesday, September 11, 2001. To Oskar, it was “the worst day.”

Featuring the greatest performance by a young actor since Haley Joel Osment saw dead people in “The Sixth Sense,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is the story of a boy whose love for his father continues to grow, even after he’s gone.

Thomas Schell (Hanks, mostly in flashbacks) is a dreamer. His father left the family when Thomas was a boy and, in spite of his dreams, Thomas became a jeweler to take care of his family. Married to Linda (Bullock), Thomas sees his dreams come true in the guise of his son, Oskar (Horn). The two have oxymoron battles (Jumbo Shrimp takes down Original Copies) and share adventures. Oskar is quiet and shy so Thomas devises what he calls “Reconnaissance Expeditions,” knowing they will get Oskar out of the house and talking to people. Currently Oskar is searching clues for the lost 6th Borough of New York, rumored to have floated away years ago. The search seems to end when Thomas dies. But when Thomas finds a mysterious key in his father’s belongings, a new search begins.

Director Daldry has made three feature films – “Billy Elliot,” “The Hours” and “The Reader.” For each of these films he has been nominated for an Academy Award. Not a bad record. His work here is truly deserving of nomination number four. The film is both exciting and heart breaking. Oskar embarks on his journeys wearing a pair of his dad’s shoes, clomping through New York City with determination. Fearing public transportation (and pretty much everything else in the world), Oskar walks the city, trying desperately to find the lock that the key opens. He explains that, were the sun to explode, those of us on earth wouldn’t know for eight minutes, because that’s how long it would take the light to travel. Oskar wants another eight minutes with Thomas and he’ll walk around the world to get them.

The film works totally thanks to the performance of young Horn, who at age 12 won $31,000 as the champion of “Kid Jeopardy.” The work is truly award worthy, though with this year’s crop of great acting performances I fear young Horn will get lost in the Oscar shuffle. Hanks and Bullock are both strong in what are really supporting roles, as are Broadway greats Viola Davis and Jeffrey Wright. Another stand out performance belongs to 82 year old Oscar winner Max Van Sydow, who plays a man known only as The Renter. Mute by choice, Van Sydow says more with his face then some actors say with their whole body, giving a wordless performance that rivals that of “The Artist’s” Jean Dujardin.

Blu-ray Review “Happy, Happy”

Director: Anne Sewitsky
Starring: Agnes Kittelsen, Henrik Rafaelsen, Joachim Rafaelsen, Maibritt Saerens
Studio: Magnolia Home Entertainment
MPAA Rating: R
Run Time: 88 minutes

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1/2 out of 5 stars

This film is a Norwegian comedy from 2010 ( if you can consider it a comedy). It was also elected as the Norwegian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards…I guess it was a slow year for them. This film is not funny at all and in fact is a little depressing in fact. I do not think that it is lost in translation either as I quite enjoyed “Trollhunter”, which was another Norwegian comedy from 2010. Running at 88 minutes the film still feels long and dragged out.

The film follows two couples that both have issues with their marriages. The story is setup when Eirik (Joachim Rafaelsen) and Elisabeth (Maibritt Saerens) to the country and end up next door to Kaja (Agnes Kittelsen) and Sigve (Henrik Rafaelsen). The couples get to know each other and the truth behind both couples are eventually found out. The couples strive to find out what does it take to be happy in your marriage.

I have to say the only saving grace for the film has to be Agnes Kittelsen. She is very cute and definitely keep my interest in the film, but that doesn’t make the movie any better. It just kept me from turning it off. There are no special features on the Blu-ray besides a US and an international trailer for the film. Overall, stay WAY away from this film for sure.

Blu-ray Review “Primeval: Volume 3”

Created by: Adrian Hodges, Tim Haines
Starring: Andrew Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt, Ben Miller, Ben Mansfield
Number of discs: 4
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Distributed by: BBC
Episodes: 13
Run Time: 581 Minutes

Volume: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Volume 3 of “Primeval” includes Series 4 and 5 of the show, rounding up all 13 episodes. This show took a little while to catch on with me but it still manages to entertain with each season. These episodes include some decent special effects and awesome creatures like the Spinosaurus, ancient crocodiles, giant insects, and of course the T-Rex. If you are holding your breath for series 6, you might need to keep waiting since their has been no announcement but there is a spin-off in the works for this year called “Primeval: New World”.

I would love to say that the show looks amazing on Blu-ray but it is only presented at 1080i. It looks ok and it is better than DVD but definitely not up to par for Blu-ray. The sound is also disappointing with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 track included. Lastly if you are looking for special features, don’t look here. Firstly, we get some prequel webisodes, which are ok but nothing special. Lastly there is a featurette called “New Dawn: Making the New Primeval”, a basic EPK but worth a watch on the production. Overall fans of the show will enjoy this, otherwise I would just watch it on Netflix Instant.

Primeval Volume 3 is available 1/10 on Blu-ray and DVD at http://bit.ly/zkSLnN!

Synopsis: Monster hit Primeval roars back onto the screens for an extended third series. Still reeling from Stephen’s death and with the depth of Helen’s betrayal now revealed, Nick Cutter must fight to re-focus his embattled team. Cutter’s crew are joined by some new recruits in the form of maverick policeman Danny Quinn, sparky Egyptologist Sarah Page, and the new leader of the ARC’s security forces Captain Becker. But as the anomalies continue to present an unrelenting series of threats, the task in hand seems almost insurmountable. It’s not just deadly creatures the team has to contend with, they also face a threat to the future of not just the ARC but of mankind itself. Prepare for more explosive action as Primeval bares its newly sharpened teeth.

DVD Review “Merlin: The Complete Third Season”

Director: Jeremy Webb, Dave Moore, Alice Troughton
Starring: Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Anthony Head, Katie McGrath, Richard Wilson

MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: BBC
DVD Release Date: January 17, 2012
Run Time: 571 minutes

Season: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 4 out of 5 stars

The series of “Merlin” has been around the block a few times so far. It debuting in the U.K, but has no luck in the US airing on NBC. But thanks to the Syfy channel for giving this show its life. The show is still going strong though…season four just premiered on Syfy on January 6, 2012 and season 5 airs in March on BBC in the UK. The shows performances still remains solid throughout season three. Colin Baker continues to show his talent as Merlin. Bradley James is a greater balance to Colin’s character. Angel Coulby has a smaller role in this season but her romance with Arthur gets some nice spotlight. Of course everyone loves, Anthony Head and he gets some great scenes as well. Another notable role in the show is the dragon (voiced by John Hurt).

Although not HD, the picture and audio are great on the DVD pushing the limited of standard definition with bright colors and an ass kicking Dolby 2.0 Stereo sound. The 13 episodes from season three are spread out over four discs with the entire fifth disc is set aside for special features. The extras included start with great commentaries from the directors and actors featured for episodes 1-3 and 10-13.
