DVD Review “Bob’s Burgers: The Complete 1st Season”

Created by: Loren Bouchard
Voices of: H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, John Roberts, Kristen Schaal
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: April 17, 2012
Running Time: 286 minutes

Season: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

If you can get past the first episode of this show, you will find this is a decent but not amazing show. If you find the voice of Bob familiar BTW, that is because is it done by H. Jon Benjamin, who also voices Agent Sterling Archer on FX’s “Archer”. I like the animation overall, it is raw and not perfect (which a a rare thing).  If you are a fan of this show be sure to tune it and support it. It is currently airing its second season on Sunday nights on Fox. I think the first season is a bit better than the current season as well.

The show centers on the Belcher family, who run the hamburger restaurant, Bob’s Burgers. The show is fun for all the family and definitely included quite a bit of family dysfunction. Some of the situations that Bob deals with are that his oldest daughter, Tina, can’t control her hormones. His middle son, Gene, helps promoting the restaurant by dressing up as a giant burger, but forgets to take the costume off to pee. Lastly we have Louise, the youngest, that tells her class that Bob’s burgers are made from human flesh!. It is no “Family Guy” or “The Simpsons” but it is far better than crap like “American Dad” and “The Cleveland Show”.

The special features are impressive overall. If you are a fan of audio commentary, this DVD set has it. In fact, it has an audio commentary for every single episode, which is quite sweet. There is a funny music video for “Lifting Up the Skirt of the Night”. There are two audio outtakes for the following episodes “Bed & Breakfast” and “Sexy Dance Fighting”. Lastly there is the original demo included with an introduction from the creator Loren Bouchard.

Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I grew up reading the comics for Marvel’s X-Men and I have always been a fan.  I though have never really enjoyed the live-action “X-Men” films especially the “Origins” series.  This Japanese anime series definitely redeems the “X-Men” brand and kicks some major ass.  It is non-stop action and really intense.  I also very recommend watching with the intended Japanese audio track.  I feel it adds a lot to the anime feel of the series.  Fans of X-Men are going to want to jump at the chance to see this series.  I only wish this series was longer than twelve episodes but luckily there is also a stand-alone “Marvel Anime: Wolverine” series as well.  You here that Sony, please release that one as well!

The series follows the reuniting of The X-Men the death of Jean Grey in order to track down Hisako Ichiki (Armor), a missing teenage girl in Northern Japan. The X-Men need to also go up against fanatical anti-mutant group, the U-Men.  They find out that Professor Xavier reason for bring them back together is bigger than they think. The result could either bridge the gap between mutants and humans, or tear the two species apart forever.

The special features on this DVD are worth checking out though . “Re-Examining The X-Men” is a behind-the-scenes looks into the creating these episodes. “X-Men: A Team of Outsiders” in an in-depth look at Marvel’s famous mutants. “Special Talk Session” is a roundtable discussion with the series creator. though not as cool as this series, check out our review of “Marvel Anime: Iron Man”.

DVD Review “Marvel Anime: Iron Man – Complete Series”

Japanese Cast: Keiji Fujiwara, Unshō Ishizuka, Rikiya Koyama, Hiroe Oka
MPAA Rating: Not Rated

Running Time: 287 minutes

Series: 3 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I am a huge fan of Japanese anime. Combine that with the amazing work of Marvel superheros and you should have match made in heaven. Although besides the fact that this series looks really cool as an anime, it just doesn’t entertain as much as I thought it would. The series is rather slow and doesn’t get really start until it is almost over. Overall, this series had some good parts and I would recommend to Iron Man fans. I enjoyed the fact it was produced and default to Japanese audio with subtitles, I think that really adds a lot to the feel of the show. If you are looking for some kick-ass Marvel Anime, I would also highly recommend the X-Men series.

The show follows Tony Stark as his arrives in Japan to build a new arc reactor that will deliver unlimited free energy to the Japanese people. He also plans to retire from suiting Iron Man and focus on plans to mass-produce armor known as “Iron Man Dio”. Stark faces not only challenges from the Japanese government and a mysterious organization Zodiac funded by terrorists. Stark needs to battle of them in order to save the day. Keep an eye out for crossover from Marvel including X-Men’s Wolverine.

The special features on the DVD are impressive and included some decent extras. The first feature called “Re-Imagining Iron Man” focuses on converting the show to anime. “21st Century Hero: The Technology of Iron Man” focuses on Tony Stark’s goodies and gadgets. “Special Cross Talk” is a roundtable discussion with the shows creators. “Voicing Tony Stark” is an interview with Japanese voice of Tony Stark, Keiji Fujiwara. I hope Sony is planning on releasing the rest of the Marvel Anime series for “Blade” and “Wolverine” as well. Fingers crossed.

DVD Review “Shazzan: The Complete Series”

Created by: Alex Toth
Voices of: Jerry Dexter, Janet Waldo, Barney Phillips, Don Messick
Distributed by: Warner Archive
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Episodes: 36
Running Time: 389 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Warner Archive does it again! They have revived another great Hannah-Barbara series called “Shazzan”.   “Shazzan” is not to be confused with “Shazam!”, the 1970’s super hero Captain Marvel TV series. This release contains the complete series of this fun show.  All 36 episodes are included in this set.  I really enjoyed this show and the episodes look great and especially for a show that premiered in 1967.  Either way, fans of Hanna-Barbara and animation alike will want to pick up this fantastic set immediately.

The series follows the adventures of brother and sister team, Chuck and Nancy, who travel around a mystical Arabian world on a flying camel, named Kaboobie. The couple also seem to find themselves in some sort of  dangers.  In the time of need, they put together their magic rings and summon a magic genie, Shazzan.  With the help of Shazzan, the twins seeks the wizard who lives “behind the beyond” in order to return them home.

“Shazzan” has even popped up in one of my favorite shows “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law”, in the episode “Mufti Trouble”.  The episodes are presented in 4 X 3 Full-Screen and also in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1.  The audio includes a Dolby Digital Mono track. Besides the 36 episodes, there is also a special feature included called  Saturday Morning Collection “The Power of Shazzan”.

Shazzan: The Complete Series is now available from Warner Archive at http://bit.ly/Hf1V8b

Synopsis: When two adventurous, twin teenagers, Chuck and Nancy, recombine the halves of a mysterious ring, they are instantly transported to ancient Egypt…as masters of an all-powerful genie named Shazzan. Now, with the help of the mighty Shazzan, the twins seek the wizard who lives “behind the beyond,” the only person able to help them return home. But even as the teenagers pursue their quest, every evil sorcerer in the desert kingdom desires the twins’ magic ring and will stop at nothing to gain the power it grants over Shazzan.

Book Review “Alfred Hitchcock: The Complete Films”

Author: Paul Duncan
Hardcover: 192 pages
Publisher: Taschen
Release Date: April 1, 2011

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Mystery is mystifying; it is an intellectual thing. Suspense is an emotional thing.” — Alfred Hitchcock

Who doesn’t love the work of Alfred Hitchcock. He is the master of suspense and will never be forgotten in the world of cinema. Taschen really scored another winner with this release. It is about 200 pages, hardback and yet sells for a very reasonable $10 dollars. It is a real celebration of Hitchcock’s work and covers his complete film history. I think the book could be a little more in depth like Taschen’s “The Stanley Kubrick Archives” but this definitely does the job, especially for its price.

The best part of this book are the pictures and their captions. They are presented in large scale and really sharp presentation. This is not the most in-depth analysis of Hitchcock but it definitely satisfies the basic fan of his work. The book does provide a decent overall of his classic films like “The Birds”, “Vertigo”, “Rear Window” and of course “Psycho”. It ranges not only from his earliest silent films to his last picture in 1976, it also focuses on his life. One of my favorite parts of this books is the list of his cameos, that is always just a fun task while watching his films.

The images in the book are very high quality and if they are in black and white or color, they still are very clear and looks fantastic. I also like the behind-the-scenes look into his films, I have never seen some of these images before and it is a real treat. Hitchcock was such a unique filmmaker with techniques that will never be able to be replicated. For people looking to find out some interesting information of Hitchcock’s career, this would be the book for that. Taschen delivers another hit and I look forward to future topics that they will cover.

Blu-ray Review “South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season”

Created by: Matt Stone & Trey Parker
Distributed by: Paramount Home Entertainment
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Release Date: March 27, 2012
Running Time: 308 minutes

Season: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I remember watching the very first night that “South Park” premiered on Comedy Central. I wouldn’t say that I am huge fan of the show, since I stopped watching around 2000. Now I have seen a dew episodes here and there in the last 12 years but I would have never thought that this show would reach its 15th season. It is such an unbelievable success and they show is still relevant and funny. I do feel that it does a little over the top and too far on some occasions but that is the beauty of the show. Since reviewing this, I have found a few love in this show and I have started watching “South Park” again, which just returned for its 16th season this month.

This Blu-ray contains the complete fourteen episodes from this season and are completely uncensored as well, which is a plus. “HumancentiPad” is a take on The Human Centipede and features Kyle who is involved in the development a revolutionary product. “Funnybot” is where Jimmy hosts the Special Ed Department’s First Annual Comedy Awards. “Royal Pudding” focuses on Ike’s is obsessed with the Royal Wedding. In “T.M.I.”, Cartman goes into anger management therapy after their penis sizes are posted on the school bulletin board. In “Crack Baby Athletic Association”, Kyle gets involved with Cartman’s latest business venture. “City Sushi” features when Butters is diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. “You’re Getting Old” follows after Stan’s 10th birthday, his worldview starts to change and so do his friendships. In “Ass Burgers”, Cartman finds a unique way to cope with Asperger’s Syndrome. In “The Last of the Meheecans”, Cartman joins the U.S. Border Patrol. “Bass to Mouth” focuses a gossip site that leaks the kids’ most scandalous secrets. “Broadway Bro Down” follows Randy as he becomes Broadway’s biggest fan. “1%” features The 99% is ganging up on Eric Cartman. The boys try to discover the truth about the first Thanksgiving in “A History Channel Thanksgiving”. Kenny ends up in the foster care system after his parents are arrested in “The Poor Kid”

When it comes to special features this Blu-ray is not lacking in that department at all. It comes with an amazing documentary called “6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park”. It gives the first-ever look behind-the-scenes at South Park Studios and an in-depth looking to creating an episode. The next extra “6 Days to Air: Behind the Scenes of ‘City Sushi'” is similar to the first feature but focuses on the one specific episode. There are also about five minutes of deleted scenes from the season, nothing amazing but worth checking out. Lastly, the best feature is mini-commentaries by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone on each episode. They each run about 5 minutes and are a lot of fun.

If that isn’t enough of a bonus each Blu-ray or DVD will come with a free download of the new “South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge” Xbox Live game. It’s first come, first serve for the first 5,000 to enter their code in order to get a download of the game, an exclusive “South Park” theme and a 48 hour trial of Xbox Live Gold Membership. The following 70,000 entries will get an exclusive “South Park” Xbox theme and a 48 hour trial of Xbox Live Gold Membership. So this is a really cool added bonus.

Blu-ray Review “Battle Royale: The Complete Collection”

Directed by: Kinji Fukasaku
Starring: Beat Takeshi, Chiaki Kuriyama
Number of discs: 4
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by: Anchor Bay
Release Date: March 20, 2012
Running Time: 368 minutes

Collection: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out 5 stars

It is really sad that it took this film this long to get released properly in the US. “Battle Royale” has been proclaimed by many as “One Of The Most Controversial Film Series Of All Time”. It is definitely that for sure…and then some. The reason for this release occurs due to the unbelievable hype from the upcoming movie “The Hunger Games”. There has been talks of doing a US version of “Battle Royale” for many years but those were silenced since “The Hunger Games” came along. They are relatively similar in a sense besides the fact that “Battle Royale” is a no-holds barred kick-ass movie not backed by a teeny-bopper/Twilight-esque following like with “The Hunger Games”. Nonetheless, I am happy to finally see this film and its sequel “Battle Royale II: Requiem” released in the America and in glorious high definition.  So if you enjoy “The Hunger Games”, you should enjoy this release as well, no question.

The complete collection consists of four discs within fantastic case/box. The box comes with great photos from the films through the case. The first disc is the director’s cut of “Battle Royale”. The second disc is the theatrical cut of “Battle Royale”. The third disc is the sequel “Battle Royale II: Requiem”, less superior that the first but still very enjoyable. The fourth and final disc is jam packed with bonus content. The video resolution looks great with its 1080p transfer, with its original aspect ratio: 1.85:1. The audio is also fantastic specifically with its Japanese track boasting a very impressive Dolby TrueHD 7.1. The English dubbed track only included a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track.

Kinji Fukasaku’s violet yet poetic “Battle Royale” follow a group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. Sounds similar to “The Hunger Games” huh? When they are flown to a remote island, the rules are laid out for the game. Each student is put in a group with another student, given a weapon and set against their fellow classmates. Only one group will be allowed to leave the island alive. Of course what separates this from “The Hunger Games” is that one your team member is killed the device around the team members neck will explode in a few seconds.

“Battle Royale II: Requiem” follows right about the events of the first film. The survivors of previous Battles Royale, led by Shuya Nanahara have formed a rebel group called the “Wild Seven”. A class of teenagers are kidnapped by the Japanese government again. Instead of being forced to kill each other, like the first film, the students are sent off to war and ordered to attack and kill terrorist group and its leader.

The special features on this release are so fantastic and include more than 3 hours of extras. The main issue with these is that they are only presented on DVD, it would have been great to see these presented on Blu-ray and in high definition. The extras includes the following: The Making of Battle Royale, TV Spot: Tarantino Version, Basketball Scene Rehearsals, Tokyo International Film Festival 2000, Special Edition TV Spot, Original Theatrical Trailer, Battle Royale Documentary, Special Effects Comparison Featurette, Filming On-Set, Behind-The-Scenes Featurette, Audition & Rehearsal Footage, Instructional Video: Birthday Version, Battle Royale Press Conference. If you previously purchased the Special Edition International versions, then this is nothing new here just with subtitles now.

The series of “Merlin” has been around the block a few times so far. It debuting in the U.K, but has no luck in the US airing on NBC. But thanks to the Syfy channel for giving this show its life. The show is still going strong though…season four just premiered on Syfy on January 6, 2012 and season 5 airs in March on BBC in the UK. The shows performances still remains solid throughout season three. Colin Baker continues to show his talent as Merlin. Bradley James is a greater balance to Colin’s character. Angel Coulby has a smaller role in this season but her romance with Arthur gets some nice spotlight. Of course everyone loves, Anthony Head and he gets some great scenes as well. Another notable role in the show is the dragon (voiced by John Hurt).

Although not HD, the picture and audio are great on the DVD pushing the limited of standard definition with bright colors and an ass kicking Dolby 2.0 Stereo sound. DVD Review “Robotech: The Complete Original Series”

Director: Robert V. Barron
Starring: Jean-Claude Ballard
Number of discs: 17
Rated: Unrated
Studio: A&E Entertainment
DVD Release Date: October 18, 2011
Run Time: 2028 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out 5 stars

Original started in 1985, “Robotech” definitely has the 80’s anime feel. It was never one of my favorites but who can turn down an 85-episode space opera. Even though it is a bit confusion and repetitive throughout the series, this sci-fi series is one of the first-ever animes to import in the US. It contains the remastered versions from the three “Robotech Wars: The Macross Saga, The Robotech Masters and the New Generation” newly titled as “The First-Third Robotech War”. The real star of this set is the disc of special features.  There are hours of additional footage that really makes this worth the purchase. If you are fan of Japanese anime, epsecially 80’s then this is the purchase for you this Holiday season.

“The First Robotech War” starts the series in 1999 when a gigantic spaceship crashes on Earth.  The world tries to unlock the secrets of this technology, known as Robotech.  They get a lot more then they expect when the alien Zentraedi attack and the war begins.  This remastered version of “The Macross Saga” contains 36 episodes of the series.  It starts off slow but once it gets started towards the end is where the fun begins.  “The Second Robotech War” aka “Masters Saga” picks up 15 years following the annihilation of the Earth, the human survivors are try to rebuild their planet, only to be faced with a new threat. This second chapter of the “Robotech” saga includes 24 episodes from the series. “The Third Robotech War” aka “New Generation” take off when the alien Invid have conquered Earth under the Regis.  Their greatest hope for saving Earth lies with the return of Admiral Hunter’s Expeditionary Force. This thrilling conclusion of the saga includes the last 25 episodes in the series.

There are a bunch of new special features that are new to DVD, including “The Making of Robotech Documentary”, new Music Videos for “Robotech”, an overview of Robotech, alternate versions of select Robotech episodes,  there is also new supplementals from the “Robotech: The Movie. Also includes is the original pilot for Macross and lastly there is promotional reel of Robotech launch in China.  These features alone are worth the purchase for sure, but there are still MANY more left.  If you are fan of deleted scenes, there are over 2.5 hours (if you can make sense of them). “Robotech: The Sentinels” includes the first 3 episodes were then spliced together into one movie along with promotional video. Not really needed unless you want to watch the first three episode in one shot.  There is the original part 1 of the pilot for “Mospeada”.  There are original opening and closing animations, always a favorite of mine.  The promotional reel to Galaxy of the Stars – Harmony gold and presentation reels for toy commercial and videogame are also included.  These is pretty cool to check out, especially due to the age of the series and its impact on the industry.  International clips for all three Robotech Wars are also including.  Lastly there are many stills containing character bios, model sheets, pre-production art, comic book covers, and merchandise galleries and much more.

Blu-ray Review “Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series”

Actors: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill
Number of discs: 6
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: BBC
Run Time: 585 minutes

Overall Score: 5 out of 5 stars

This series is definitely one of the best of the new reboot. The story line is very intense and if I say it “ballsy”. In the first episode of the series, they “kill off” The Doctor…that takes some guts. Of course they only reveal little bits until the finale, but it is done so well that it leaves your mouth watering for more each episode. I feel that Matt Smith is just such an amazing Doctor. His mannerisms are just so unique and he really dives deep into the role. I can’t wait to see what is going to be happen with the seventh series.

This complete series set comes with all 13 episodes from series six and even includes last year’s Christmas episode “A Christmas Carol”. The special features on this release is really worth the purchase alone though. There are five “Night and the Doctor” recorded scenes exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray.  There are five special episode prequels.  There are two sketches recorded for the UK’s Comic Relief charity event.  Since “Doctor Who” has the best monsters, you can find out about the Doctor’s most challenging opponents in four different “Monster Files”.  I am a big fan of “Doctor Who Confidential” and there is an inside look includes for each episode.  There is also fantastic audio commentary available on a few episodes. So obviously if you are fan of the series, the purchase of this Blu-ray is a no-brainer!

Synopsis: The 6-disc set combines all 13 episodes of the new season from award-winning lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat (Sherlock, The Adventures of Tintin), along with the 2010 Holiday Special, A Christmas Carol, starring Harry Potter’s Michael Gambon, plus hours of bonus features. The series follows the adventures of the Doctor, a mysterious traveler who journeys throughout all of time and space, picking up companions along the way. ©BAFTA nominee Matt Smith (the Doctor), Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), Arthur Darvill (Rory) and Alex Kingston (River Song) are back when the Doctor faces his date with death and learns a lot more about the mysterious River Song. Guest stars include Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Notting Hill), supermodel Lily Cole (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), James Corden (Gavin & Stacey,The History Boys), and David Walliams (Little Britain, Come Fly With Me). Catch a surprise appearance by NBC’s Meredith Vieira in the series finale as well as Michael Sheen (The Twilight Saga, Midnight in Paris), who voices a character in Neil Gaiman’s episode and Imelda Staunton (Cranford, Vera Drake), who voices a character in Tom MacRae’s episode. Executive producers are Piers Wenger (Upstairs Downstairs, Ashes to Ashes) and Beth Willis (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes). DVD Review “Dragon’s Lair: The Complete Series”

Developed by: Ruby-Spears Productions
Voices of: Bob Sarlatte, Ellen Gerstell, Fred Travalena, Michael Mish, Arthur Burghardt, Peter Cullen
Studio: Warner Bros.
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Episodes: 13
Run Time: 279 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Dragon’s Lair” was always an interesting type of arcade game especially since it had you choose you own path and your decisions in the game reflected different results. Now if your wondering how that transfers to a television show, obviously not totally well. The show does present different scenarios that could happen for our hero and it fun because it is usually before a commercial break, so it leaves you waiting to see what happens.  Honestly though, the show has dragons, princesses and knights…and what else do you want in an 80’s cartoon. I think it works for me.

In case you haven’t heard of this show that is due to the fact that it only last 1 season of 13 episodes. The show is well done by the Hanna-Barbera team and the animation is decent for mid-80’s. The voice work is completely over the top and reminds of “The Legend of Zelda” TV series. This DVD release is the first time that this series is seeing the light of day, thank you again Warner Brothers Archive. In general the show is fun and mindless. It is not the best series that ever came out of the 80’s but it is also not the worse.  No extras are included on the disc, which is OK because at least we got the complete series, not a volumized set.

Synopsis: The legendary videogame Dragon’s Lair was a blockbuster (and quarter guzzling) sensation when it first debuted, spawning sequels, imitators, and a beloved Saturday morning cartoon series. Developed by the powerhouse animation crew put together by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the Dragon’s Lair cartoon made many contributions to the Dragon’s Lair saga, from naming the Dragon “Singe” to rounding out the cast with such memorable supporting players as Bertram the horse (voiced by animation legend Peter Cullen) and Timothy the squire (voiced by Michael Mish). Mimicking the action of a videogame, Dragon’s Lair pauses the action and asks the audience which action Dirk should take next in his never-ending quest to protect the kingdom of King Ethelred and his beloved Princess Daphne. But enough talk! Dirk the Daring faces doom throughout this 13 episode, 2-disc set and he needs YOU to help him decide what to do next!
