Blu-ray Review “Puncture”

Directors: Mark Kassen, Adam Kassen
Starring: Chris Evans, Brett Cullen, Michael Biehn, Mark Kassen, Vanessa Shaw
Studio: Millennium Entertainment
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 100 minutes

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

It is very surprising that a film like this was dropped direct to DVD/Blu-ray, especially when Chris Evans is at the top of his career and just come off playing the role of Marvel’s Captain America. This film is very deep and definitely heavy on the drama. Chris Evans delivers a pretty emotional performances and shows off those acting skills. Overall though the film fails to really delivers the entertaining factors for me. I enjoyed the story but I didn’t really become very attached to it.

The film follows lawyer and also drug addict, Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) and Paul Danziger (co-director Mark Kassen) as they take their law firm against the health care and pharmaceutical companies. They are underdogs in this battle to get safety needles but in all hospitals, after a local ER nurse is pricked by a contaminated needle on the job. Not only is Mike fighting the case…he is also fighting his own demons.

The special features are virtually non-existent. Though if you enjoy the film and are a fan of digital copies than it will be a plus for you as a free digital copy is included. There are also a few preview for other Millennium Entertainment films. Fans of Evans, should give this a shot for the acting and fans of law films should enjoy it as well.

Blu-ray Review “Contagion”

Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet
Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running time: 106 minutes

Film: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

With a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow and a scary yet intriguing story, this film should have delivered but it didn’t.  The acting is definitely fantastic and is the only redeeming factor in this film.  The story was unable to connect all of its intertwining stories into one decent paced story.  The story moves very slow and doesn’t express the thriller aspect of the events happening.  When you have a film about global epidemic, I just would expect it to be a little more exciting. Unfortunately this  film drags and is not exciting at all.

The special features includes in this set are good but not great.  The first is called “Contagion: How A Virus Changes The World” is a decent featurette about the effects of the virus. “The Reality of Contagion” delves into the truth behind the films events and the cast talk about the reality.  It is an interesting feature.  “The Contagion Detectives” talk about how the cast was prepared for their roles and the people that helped them get ready. Lastly included is the UltraViolet Digital Copy for instant streaming, which is a great feature just too bad I am not looking forward to watching this film anytime again soon.

Synopsis: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and Bryan Cranston, along with medical journalist Sanjay Gupta, explore the real science of global viruses and what they mean to the human race. The world is preparing for the next biological disaster…but is it too late?

DVD Review “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy”

Directed by: Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck
Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Bibb, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Nick Kroll, Tyler Labine, Lindsay Sloane
Lucy Punch, Will Forte
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Running time: 98 minutes

Film: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3.5 out of 5 stars

With a title like “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy”, it is easy to expect a lot from this movie, but at points it really plays it too safe. The film though definitely packs one of the best comedy casts of the year. Jason Sudeikis, Nick Kroll and Tyler Labine definitely rocks the house in the comedy department and Lake Bell is always a pleasure to watch. Will Forte and Lindsay Sloane are a great duo and deliver a few good laughs. If you are a fan of TV show “Children’s Hospital” and its cast, then you will definitely dig this film. The highlight scene though is easily the orgy party with David Koechner and he steals the show like always.

The film follows Eric (Jason Sudeikis) and his group of friends who hold theme-events at his father’s (Don Johnson) house in the Hamptons. When Eric finds out that his dad plans to sell the house, they decide to have one last big party and it would be an orgy. The group spends the next few weeks till Labor Day preparing and getting ready for the big night.  Can the group go through with this or will they chicken out?

The unrated cut of the film adds about 3 extra minutes to the film but doesn’t add too much more to the film. The bonus features included on the disc are a very funny commentary from co-writers/directors Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck and Jason Sudeikis. There is also a bunch of deleted scenes running about 15 minutes and they are decent watches and are really more like extended scenes. There is a very funny gag reel, which I wish was longer. “How to Film an Orgy” is a decent but short 9 minute behind the scenes featurette. Overall I would say I enjoyed this film and would recommend it.

Blu-ray Review “Blackthorn”

Director: Mateo Gil
Starring: Sam Shepard, Eduardo Noriega, Stephen Rea
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: Magnolia Home Entertainment
Run Time: 102 minutes

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

What happened to Butch Cassidy when he got old…well if you care this is the movie to watch. Nut if you expect another “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” film you will be sadly disappointed. This film is not it at all. It does not have any charm that the other films have had. This film is slow moving and only saved by a great performance from Sam Shepard. If you are feeling nostalgic and a big fan, you might want to check out but keep expectations low.

Under the name of James Blackthorn, Cassidy sets out of exile from a secluded Bolivian village and heads back into the U.S. with hoping to see his family again before he dies. Once he sets out his plans change when it comes in meeting with another criminal (Eduardo Noriega). He forced to set out to one last adventure.

There special features are decent including a few deleted scenes. There is a brief “Making of Blackthorn”, which is interesting but not very detailed. Not related to “Blackthorn” but the director Mateo Gil has a few short films included as well. Finally there is the typical Magnolia Home Entertainment features, “HDNet: A Look at Blackthorn” and of course trailer.

DVD Review “A Mile in His Shoes”

Director: William Dear
Starring: Dean Cain, Luke Schroder
Number of discs: 1
Rated: PG
Studio: Vivendi Entertainment
Run Time: 91 minutes

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Normally I am not a fan of baseball films. This one is presented by Thomas Kinkade and also from the same director of “Angels in the Outfield”. Plus who doesn’t love Dean Cain? I figured I would give it a chance and it definitely was enjoyable. The story is inspiring and also definitely gives reaches out to the baseball fans.

The film follows minor league baseball coach Arthur ‘Murph’ Murphy (Dean Cain) as he stumbles upon Mickey (Luke Schroder), a young farmer who turns out to be a great pitcher. Mickey faces many challenges including fitting it with the team and playing baseball since he has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. The film is based on a true story and definitely packs one hell of a powerful story into one inspirational film.

Since this is a TV special, I am impressed that there are special features included at all for this release.  “The Making of A Mile in His Shoes” is  short but sweet. There is also a trailer included for the film.  Since this is presented by Thomas Kinkade, there is a painting gallery also included.  There is also a free 4×6 original, limited edition Thomas Kinkade painting postcard with certificate of authentication.

Blu-ray Review “Dolphin Tale”

Starring: Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman
Directed by: Charles Martin Smith
Rated: PG
Running time: 1 hour 53 mins
Warner Brothers

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Dolphin Tale” is definitely a fun for the whole family. If you are able to catch this film though, the best way to do it would be in its filmed 3D presentation. The story of rescue of the dolphin, Winter, is nothing out of the ordinary and the story has been done before but this one stands out as something special. This film is just packed with a big heart and some really great acting including great performances from Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. The film looks decent is 2D, even though it would shines much more in its 3D presentation. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is fantastic and really shines during the water scenes. Overall this is a heartwarming film that does it job very well in entertaining families this holiday season.

The special features includes are decent. The first one is called “The Hutash Rainbow Bridge” is a sort of CGI short, which is definitely fun and a definite for kids. “At Home with Winter” is 15-minute behind-the-scenes look at the film with the cast and crew, nothing great but not bad either. “Spotlight on a Scene” features director Charles Martin Smith and producer Andrew Kosove as they discuss the ffilm’s opening sequence and the 3D dimension. The longest special feature on the disc is “Winter’s Inspiration”, about 20 minutes, which focuses on the true story of Winter. Not sure how it is really related to “Dolphin Tale” but there is an animated short called “Ormie and the Cookie Jar about a pig trying to reach a cookie jar on top of a refrigerator. It’s cute but doesn’t fit. There is one deleted (and forgettable) scene called “Winter Meets Panama”. Lastly there is a fun gag reel.  This combo pack includes the Blu-ray and DVD, also included is a Ultraviolet Digital Copy to watch anywhere from your computer or digital devices.  I really enjoy this feature.

Synopsis: In an inspiring story of the bond between animals and humans, a boy named Sawyer discovers an injured dolphin, who is brought to a marine hospital and named Winter. Unfortunately, her injuries cost Winter her tail, without which she may not survive. But with Sawyer’s devotion, a marine biologist’s (Harry Connick Jr.) and the brilliance of a prosthetist (Morgan Freeman) charged with creating a new tail, Winter may receive a second chance at life.

Blu-ray Review “Final Destination 5”

Directed by: Steven Quale
Starring: Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, David Koechner, PJ Byrne
Distributed by New Line Cinema
Rated R
Running time: 92 minutes

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Before I even start, this film is meant to be viewed in 3D and it is really the only way I prefer it. I would have given this disc a 5/5 stars if it was in 3D, especially since it has some decent bonus features. The film itself honestly the best in the whole “Final Destination” series. If you know the series then you know how this film’s main goal is provide shocking and kick-ass death scenes (and they looked the best in 3D). The 2D Blu-ray still looks amazing and the film is still major kick-ass. The video is very sharp…most importantly the kills still looks cool. The film also has some pretty intense moments and the DTS-HD Master Audio is really clear and works well wit the action scenes.

This release contains a two-disc combo pack featuring the high-definition Blu-ray and the DVD. The first extra is called “Final Destination 5: Circle of Death, Your Final Destination,” which is a five-minute featurette which connects each film in the series. Next up is about fifteen minutes of  alternate death scenes, which features some pretty cool ideas.   I really enjoyed the extra “Visual Effects of Death” and the “Collapsing Bridge” sections as well. Lastly, I have really been enjoying the new way for the studios to include digital copy with UltraViolet Digital Copy on Flixster!  You are able to watch on computers, tablets or smartphones.  It is the future of digital copies and instead of wasting a disc you can stream your film right from your Flixster account.

Synopsis: In “Final Destination 5,” Death is just as omnipresent as ever, first revealing its menacing reality to a group of coworkers headed for a corporate retreat. During the bus ride, Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) has a premonition in which he and most of his friends, as well as numerous others, die in a horrific bridge collapse. When his vision ends, events begin to mirror what he had seen, and he frantically ushers as many of his colleagues?including his friend, Peter (Miles Fisher), and girlfriend, Molly (Emma Bell)?away from the disaster before Death can claim them. But these unsuspecting souls were never supposed to survive and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda. No matter where you run, no matter where you hide…you can’t cheat death. Or can you?

DVD Review “The Garfield Show: Dinosaur & Other Animal Adventures”

Voices of: Frank Welker, Gregg Berger, Wally Wingert
Episodes: 6
Running Time: 74 Minutes
Studio: Vivendi Entertainment

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“The Garfield Show” started in France in 2008, following its US premiere in late 2009. The show is a different take for the series as it is fully CGI animated. I think that it works rather well in 15 minute episode formats. Each episode is quick and usually packs a good laugh or two. The animation is basic but not bad, with the colors really standing out. It definitely also has a pretty catchy theme song.

There are six episodes from this series included in this set including “Down on the Farm”, “The Pet Show”, “Bone Diggers”, “Underwater World”, “Fish to Fry” and “History of Dogs”. Some of the adventures that Garfield and Ottie deal with are digging up dinosaur bones, working on a farm, working on a farm, exploring the ocean and even attends a pet show.

My favorite on the disc is definitely “Underwater World”, since it has a cool shark named Chomper. I am a sucker for CGI sharks. Overall this show is fun and should definitely hold the interest of children…(and some adult like myself). There are over 100 episodes of this show and they seem to be releasing a new volume many times throughout the year. So keep an eye out for more volumes coming fast.

DVD Review “A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures”

Directed by: Ben Stassen
Starring: Yuri Lowenthal, Melanie Griffith, Tim Curry, Anthony Anderson and Stacy Keach
Rating: Not Rated
Length: 88 Minutes
Studio: Vivendi Entertainment

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

Since 2003, whenever there is any movie about talking animals it gets compared to just another “Finding Nemo”. Well, this film is not a total rip-off and is kind of enjoyable. First off the CG effects in the film are decent and really colorful. This originally came from Belgium and was recently released in the UK on 3D Blu-ray. I have seen that edition and honestly prefer it, especially when you watch certain scenes made specifically to shine in 3D.

The story is entertaining for kids but also sets out to deliver a message about the global warming.
Sammy, the sea turtle, takes an incredibly 50 years journey traveling the world. Along his journey he meets many friends, including love interest Shelly and also deals with some serious issues though, which was a bit of downer for me. Luckily, Sammy is really cute when he is younger and the film definitely takes shines more during that time.

The voice cast is notable and includes Melanie Griffith, Tim Curry, Anthony Anderson and Stacy Keach. If your kids notice the voice of Sammy, that because Yuri Lowenthal is also the voice of Ben 10 and Sasuke from “Naruto”. The soundtrack is fun and notable. Overall If you are a fan of this film, I would suggest catching it in 3D if possible. Also if you are looking for a sequel, “Sammy 2: Escape From Paradise” is being released August 2012…but only in France.

DVD Review “Midnight in Paris”

Director: Woody Allen
Starring: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Kurt Fuller, Mimi Kennedy
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Run Time: 94 minutes

Overall Score: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I have always been a fan of Woody Allen’s work through his career but have been picky with his work in the last 10 years. I originally wasn’t interested in this film until it became Mr. Allen’s biggest grossing film to date since 86’s “Hannah and Her Sisters”. Let me tell you, I was missing out as this is easily one of the best film of the year. The acting is phenomenal and each player works perfectly off the next. The story is very sweet and light yet fantastical and heavy. Stephane Wrembel’s score accompanies the film very well and takes us on the midnight journey through Paris.

This is a romantic comedy about a young people Gil and Inez (Owen Wilson & Rachel McAdams), who are vacationing in Paris and are engaged to be married…but they are two completely different people. Gil has such a great love for Paris and wants a very simple life like in the 1920’s and Inez is very driven and cares a lot about appearance and status in society. After a night of drinking, Gil ends up getting in a car with strangers and finding himself transported back into a simpler time in time through the streets of Paris. Along his journey he comes in contact with various legends from our past including Pablo Picasso (Marcial Di Fonzo Bo), Salvador Dalí (Adrien Brody), Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates), F. Scott Fitzgerald (Tom Hiddleston) and Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll) and they help Gil get his life into perspective.

The casting like I mentioned earlier is so rich and full of different types of talent. I really enjoyed Marion Cotillard performance as Adriana. Corey Stoll is also fantastic and funny as Ernest Hemingway. Owen Wilson is definitely the star of this film really breaking out of his recent rut and gives this performance his all. Although the film is so great the special features are not as spectacular as it only includes a brief panel interview, called “Midnight in Cannes” with a few of the cast and runs about five minutes. I would have loved to get some commentary and more behind the scenes from Woody Allen. Despite that, this is a must watch! Do not miss it.

DVD Review “Gurozuka”

Directors: Yoichi Nishiyama
Actors: Keiko Saito, Yuko Kurosawa, Yukari Fukui, Nozomi Ando, Yoko Mitsuya
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Synapse Films
Run Time: 84 minutes

Our Score: 2 out of 5 stars

Synapse Films releases have been very impressive in the last few months, but this one is the weak one in the batch. This foreign import from 2005, tries to steal parts from films like “Scream” and “The Ring” but fails in its execution. There is zero suspense, the acting is terrible and to top it off the story is very bland and doesn’t make much sense. The best thing this film has is its score, which reminded me of “One Missed Call” but besides that this film is a total pass.

The film follows a group of teenage girls who visit an house in the middle of nowhere to rehearse and perform a play. The group soon discovers a videotape with that shows person wearing a Japanese deigan mask killing people in that exact house . Before they know it things start going array and the girls start going missing.  Is there a mysterious killer stalking them or is one of the group members not who they say they are?

The bonus features include a featurette about “Making of Gurozuka” and original trailer. The featurette is nothing special but watchable. Overall if you are looking for good horror from Synapse Films, check out the recently released “Intruder” & “The Exterminator” Blu-ray releases.

Blu-ray Review “The Love We Make”

Directed: Albert Maysles, Bradley Kaplan
Starring: Paul McCartney
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Eagle Rock Entertainment
Run Time: 90 minutes

Our Score: 2 out of 5 stars

I expected a lot from “The Love We Make” especially since it was directed by Albert Maysles, who did “Gimme Shelter” along with Bradley Kaplan. I felt that it was very slow moving and dragged out. Even though I could listen to Paul McCartney talk all day, it just doesn’t feel focuses in its message. The best part of the film is when Paul’s friends cameo like David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, James Taylor and Jim Carey. Honestly you are probably better off just watching the DVD of “The Concert For New York City”, since this is not much more revealing.

The film follows Paul McCartney as he travels through New York City the days following the World Trade Center events in 2001. The main purpose of the film documents the planning and execution of “The Concert For New York City”. The second half of the film primarily features clips from the benefit concert and some exclusive backstage moments with the talent involved.

The sounds is DTS-HD Master Audio but it really didn’t jump out at me as being extraordinary. Since the film was also show in 16mm black and white with color clips from the concerts, the Blu-ray video is grainy and is not a good fit. Lastly, there are no bonus features on the disc either which could have been a redeeming factor.

3D Blu-ray Review “Fright Night”

Directed by: Craig Gillespie
Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Distributed by Touchstone Pictures
MPAA Rating: R
Running time: 106 minutes

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars

This remake of the classic 80’s film was very under appreciated at the box office. I feel that this film is going to be a real cult classic down the line just like the first film. The 3D in the film was really well used and in fact the 3D Blu-ray experience actually improved from the theatrical. The film was shot in 3D unlike most recent converts…and it shows in quality. The video on the disc is just extremely clear and sharp, or else the 3D wouldn’t look as good as it does. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 is great, especially in the action scenes…which there are quite a few. If you are willing to give this film a chance, it is easily one of the better films released this year.

The acting in the film is great in fact and Colin Farrell really nails the role of Jerry the Vampire. He is funny, cool and yet still scary. David Tennant is really a gem in this film. He is extremely funny and a highlight to the film. Anton Yelchin plays the role of the kick-ass savior pretty well along with Imogen Poots who can definitely stand up on her own. Christopher Mintz-Plasse role is limited like in the first film but he definitely has our attention, especially after his great role in “Kick-Ass”.

The special features are found all on the 2D disc as the 3D only is bare. The overall the features are ok but not stunning…also they are missing any cast/crew commentaries. The first feature is called “The Official “How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie” Guide” and it is a short but fun feature about the making of the film. Next there are five deleted/extended sequences, honestly nothing special except the one about Ed being missing which could have been added into the film. “Peter Vincent: Come Swim in my Blood” is the next feature, also short but I loved Tennant in character. “Squid Man: Extended & Uncut” is pretty intense and totally worth watching. There is a bunch of unrated bloopers in the gag reel and really is some great clips. Lastly, there is an uncensored music video of the song “No One Believes Me” by Kid Cudi.

DVD Review “Switched at Birth: Volume One”

Starring: Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D. W. Moffett, Lea Thompson
Number of discs: 2
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: ABC Studios
Episodes: 1-10
Run Time: 430 minutes

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

I have seen the promos for this show and overall I am of fan of ABC Family’s TV programming. The show is enjoyable with some funny and dramatic elements but overall seems lacking a major purpose. This set consists of the first ten episodes from the show’s freshman season. Overall the show might cater more to the female gender or teenagers but not to me personally. There are also no special features on this releases as well, which is a little disappointing.

The series doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to revealing the whole switching at birth, as it happens in the first episode. Once they get it out the way the series really takes form having the two girls meet each others family and even moving in together. The show features the girls struggle with their own identities and prejudices against one another and while also facing everyday teenage drama like dating, friendships, and family.

I really had a problem with actress Vanessa Marano, it wasn’t so much her character but I just thought that she was really annoying. On the complete opposite, I really enjoyed watching Katie Leclerc and thought that she was really sweet. Watching great actresses like Lea Thompson and Constance Marie were highlights of the show. Lucas Grabeel known for his “High School Musical” fame sadly is only secondary character and really could have shined more.

DVD Review “The Looney Tunes Show: Season One, Volume 2”

Developed by: Spike Brandt, Tony Cervone
Voices of: Jeff Bergman, Bob Bergen, Fred Armisen, Jennifer Esposito, Maurice LaMarche, June Foray, Roz Ryan, Kristen Wiig
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Warner Brothers
Episodes: 4
Running Time: 89 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I have been a fan of “The Looney Tunes” ever since I was a kid, who wasn’t right?  This new show expanded the characters into a 30 minute format.  I think it really works and gives brings the “The Looney Tunes” into a new generation.  This is the first season of the new show and it only includes a few episodes but it definitely left me wanted more.  You would recognize a few of your favorite voices like Jeff Bergman, who voices Bugs and Daffy and also Porky Pig’s Bob Bergen.  You will also notice some new voices like Kristen Wiig voicing Lola Bunny.  Overall I look forward to watching the rest of the episodes as this series is definitely grown on me.

This volume includes episodes 5-8 from the first season. “Monster Talent” features Daffy as he tries to prepare Gossamer for a school talent show. Also includes is a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “A Zipline in the Sand”. The episode “Reunion” follows Bugs as he helps Daffy try to better himself before his class reunion. There is also a Merrie Melodies: “Cock of The Walk” with Foghorn Leghorn and another CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Fee Fi Fo Dumb”. “Casa de Calma” features Bugs and Daffy trying to impress a famous actress. Included all is a Merrie Melodies: “Queso Bandito” with Speedy Gonzales and a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Sail Fail”. The last episode included is “Devil Dog” where Bugs tries to turn the Tasmanian Devil into a pet. Also included is a CGI Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short: “Unsafe at Any Speed”.

Premise: This half-hour animated comedy series starring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck is no longer confined to 7-minute shorts. Bugs and Daffy are out of the woods and living in the suburbs among such colorful neighbors as Yosemite Sam, Granny, Tweety and Sylvester. In addition to each episode’s main story, The Looney Tunes Show also features “cartoons within a cartoon.” The Tasmanian Devil, Speedy Gonzales, Marvin the Martian and other classic characters sing original songs in two-minute music videos called Merrie Melodies . The legendary Looney Tunes cartoons are getting a 21st century relaunch and a CGI overhaul for a new generation.
