Film Review “Stage Fright”

If there’s one musical slasher to see this year, it’s “Stage Fright”. Or maybe it’s this summer’s gory ode to musicals. Or maybe it’s 2014’s catchiest, disillusioned fantasy about someone who wanted to see all the theater kids at their school slaughtered. Regardless of the movie’s intentions and lack of settling on a genre, “Stage Fright” is one of those guilty pleasures that combines two unlikely affections, Broadway and horror.

I must admit these are both guilty pleasures of mine. I have “Wicked” on my iPod and “Cannibal Holocaust” in my DVD collection. While “Stage Fright” doesn’t quite meet the satisfying highs that both of these make within the context of their own category, it manages to stitch together a working piece of parody that provides some hearty laughs and a string of snickers during songs. At times it’s surprising how much more fulfilling the corny songs are than the eventual killings.

The movie presents us with two siblings, Camilla (MacDonald) and Buddy (Douglas Smith), the children of a murdered opera diva, Kylie (Driver). She’s stabbed to death by a freak wearing the mask of the villain in the musical she’s performing in, The Haunting of the Opera. The murder goes unsolved and the young ones are taken in under the care of one of Kylie’s former lovers, Roger (Meat Loaf). Fast forward to 10 years after these events, the two children are all grown up and toiling in the kitchen of Roger’s dilapidated summer camp for theater kids. The deeply in debt camp allows it’s summer time students to put on their own plays and this summer, they’re putting on a Japanese version of The Haunting of the Opera. Once again another psycho, this time donning a Kabuki mask, stalks the sets and bides his time before he can kill the young campers.

The cheesiness seeps into nearly every line of dialogue and shows that director Sable has a deep appreciation of horror and the musical styling of theater. For every reference to “Hellraiser” and “Friday the 13th”, there’s an obvious nod to “Phantom of the Opera” and unforeseen wink at “Glee”. While the blueprints are obvious, Sable’s final product is a bit shrouded. The straight face acting would lead you to believe this is a parody, but to the astute viewer, the potpourri blend of humor, theatrics and midnight frights are an homage to Sable’s influences. I can understand why this can be off-putting to viewers hoping for one or the other.

Despite having to play the shy girl that eases out of her cocoon throughout the running time, MacDonald really blossoms when panic sets in. And if that’s her actually singing in this movie, I can’t believe this incredibly attractive 26-year-old actress only has 20 acting credits to her name. While Minnie Driver gets her name near the top, her short screen time and quick murder appears to be a bow to “Psycho”. Meat Loaf really steals the scenes he’s in and in my humble opinion, needed more opportunities to really belt one out and stretch those monster vocal cords of his. Not that I’m complaining that Sable was able to nab Meat Loaf for another rare on-screen singing role.

“Stage Fright” is far from perfect and definitely needs to be refined, but the nucleus of this movie is fun enough to turn a blind eye to its predictability. I wouldn’t actually mind seeing a stage performance of this movie with a lengthier amount of time given for silly songs and a splatter zone for audience members. It worked for “Evil Dead: The Musical”. Sable’s next project will be featured in “The ABC’s Death 2”, which might show us which one of his talents is stronger, music or violence. Until then, relish in the absurd tongue-in-cheek goodness that “Stage Fright” gives in every octave.

Blu-ray Review “Fright Night 2: New Blood”

What a waste of time! “Fright Night 2: New Blood” is billed as a direct-to-video sequel to the 2011 remake, yet it is just another remake. I do not understand why they decided to take this route. Of course none of the original cast is back for this mess of a film. Charley, Amy and Evil Ed are placed in a high school program in Romania. Instead of Jerry Dandridge, we get Gerri Dandridge, who is not hard on the eyes I might add, as their female professor. Lastly Peter Vincent is also here except he a reality Ghost Hunters-wanna be paranormal investigator. There is no explanation or reference back to the other film, unless you know from reading this, I was left with a confused face on the entire movie.  Did I mention this is a waste of time?

They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called “Fright Night,” to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.

20th Century Fox still delivered a nice release for this terrible film as a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD Ultraviolet combo pack. The film is also delivered unrated but since it was never released, it is just another way to draw in any type of audience. The special features are just as weak as the film is.  There is an audio commentary by director Eduardo Rodriguez and producers Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta, Besides that there is “Fright Night” Webisodes and “Dracula Revealed” featurette included. Don’t waste your time, waste the 2011 remake instead or of course the original 1985 Tom Holland classic, which is the best. Stop making useless remakes!

When it comes to Scooby-Doo!, Warner Bros. Animation has been behind this series for the last few years and keeping it alive and fresh. “Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright” is the latest direct-to-video original animated movie and one heck of a fun time. It features the great voice talents of Frank Welker, Mindy Cohn, Matthew Lillard, Wayne Brady, Peter Macnicol and Ariel Winter. There is something about Scooby-Doo! that really still entertains time after time. This film is filled with great laughs, thrills and hijinks, all the great things that make up a great Scooby-Doo! movie. Keep them up Warner Bros!! Next up in the world of Scooby-Doo!, this September brings “Scooby-Doo! 13 Spooky Tales Run For Your ‘Rife!”, which is a collection of 13 action-packed adventures.

Synopsis: Join Scooby-Doo, Shaggy and the Mystery Inc. crew as they head to Chicago for a talent show, a few museum tours and a whole lot of pizza. The windy city is home to the hit TV show, Talent Star, in which songwriting duo Fred and Daphne are finalists with high hopes. Not to be left out, Scooby and Shaggy have a secret act in the works, which they’re betting will take the contest by storm. Unlucky for all involved, the competition becomes frightful as the show is being broadcast from an opera house with a history of horrors and a particularly vengeful phantom that has cursed the show’s production.

Warner Home Entertainment is releasing this latest film, like the past ones, in a Blu-ray combo pack including the Blu-ray, standard DVD and UltraViolet™ editions of the film. The 1080p transfer of the film looks great. The animation really is sharp and the colors are crisp. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track works with the laughs and hijinks from the film. In terms of bonus features there is not much concerning the production itself but there are two bonus Scooby-Doo! episodes. Included episodes are “Never Ape an Ape Man”, which is the seventh episode of the first season of “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” and “Don’t Fool with a Phantom”, which is the eighth and last episode of the second season of “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!”.

3D Blu-ray Review “Fright Night”

This remake of the classic 80’s film was very under appreciated at the box office. I feel that this film is going to be a real cult classic down the line just like the first film. The 3D in the film was really well used and in fact the 3D Blu-ray experience actually improved from the theatrical. The film was shot in 3D unlike most recent converts…and it shows in quality. The video on the disc is just extremely clear and sharp, or else the 3D wouldn’t look as good as it does. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 is great, especially in the action scenes…which there are quite a few. If you are willing to give this film a chance, it is easily one of the better films released this year.

The acting in the film is great in fact and Colin Farrell really nails the role of Jerry the Vampire. He is funny, cool and yet still scary. David Tennant is really a gem in this film. He is extremely funny and a highlight to the film. Anton Yelchin plays the role of the kick-ass savior pretty well along with Imogen Poots who can definitely stand up on her own. Christopher Mintz-Plasse role is limited like in the first film but he definitely has our attention, especially after his great role in “Kick-Ass”.

The special features are found all on the 2D disc as the 3D only is bare. The overall the features are ok but not stunning…also they are missing any cast/crew commentaries. The first feature is called “The Official “How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie” Guide” and it is a short but fun feature about the making of the film. Next there are five deleted/extended sequences, honestly nothing special except the one about Ed being missing which could have been added into the film. “Peter Vincent: Come Swim in my Blood” is the next feature, also short but I loved Tennant in character. “Squid Man: Extended & Uncut” is pretty intense and totally worth watching. There is a bunch of unrated bloopers in the gag reel and really is some great clips. Lastly, there is an uncensored music video of the song “No One Believes Me” by Kid Cudi.

Film Review “Fright Night”

When it comes to horror films, it is hard for them to remake our “babies”. I happened though to have really enjoyed this film. I have to say it was really well done and it is a great upgrade to the series. It kept the charm of the first film but added more action, humor and class. Plus who doesn’t like vampires in 3D…I sure do!…and yes BTW it was shot in 3D (more on that later). What makes it even better is that you have a fantastic young cast led by the amazing Colin Farrell. NOTE: Die-hard fans of the original make sure to keep an eye out about half way through for a great cameo from the original Jerry, Chris Sarandon.

The story gets an update in this remake and moved to the outskirts of Las Vegas because where else is a perfect setting for people that play all night and sleep all day. We follow Charley (Anton Yelchin) who, of course, suspects that his new neighbor Jerry (Colin Farrell) is a vampire after being convinced by his friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Once Jerry catches on to Charley knowledge of him all war is waged on him and his friends and family. Charley then visits and seeks the help from Las Vegas magician and vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant) to try beat him.

Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots are great newcomers and are going to be taking over Hollywood soon. Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s role is limited but effective. Christopher really gets a chance to act in this film and not just play the nerd. I have to tell you Roddy McDowall is a hard act to follow but David Tennant (known best for playing the 10th Doctor Who) is simply spectacular!! He is funny and steals most of his scenes. But let’s give it up to Colin Farrell who is such plays the amazingly bad-ass vampire, Jerry. Colin not only hits a home run, he gets a grand slam with this film and the role really suites him well.

The special effects in the film are really well done and the makeup is phenomenal, kudos as usual to KNB EFX team, Howard Berger and Greg Nicotero. The film was shot using 3D cameras like the recent “Final Destination 5” and it really improves the film. The 3D is subtle but adds good depth and a few “whoa” jump moments, especially at the end. Overall if you are fan of the original I suggest you give this film an open-minded chance and if you haven’t seen the original you will still have a blast with this for sure (then watch the original, cause it rules!).

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a high school senior who’s on top of the world—that is until Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door and Charlie discovers that he is a vampire preying on the neighborhood.
