Raising children to be “happy and independent” is not as easy as some may think – and if you’re here, I’m sure you already approve of my first sentence. Raising children AND having a job AND finding time for yourself might be the most challenging thing you have ever done; but the truth is, it’s not impossible. As long as you remain calm, calculated, open, and positive, there is nothing that could ever bring you down.
“Right…. But how the hell do I do that?” Many parents are lost when their first kid arrives, as they imagine their lives will completely change. They start stressing out, leaving no room for other activities – their lives revolve strictly around children. Even though you-time will definitely decrease, you must learn how to combine responsibilities with pleasure. Focusing on solely one can be detrimental to your mental health, as recent studies show.
Celebrities are the perfect example (well…. some!) of successful parents – not only do they work hard, but they also look after their children day and night. Besides that, they must also deal with paparazzi, the press, social media, yada yada yada. So, let’s see what practical tips we can learn from them.
- Spend Quality Time with Them
Spending quality time with children is highly important for their emotional growth. As the Mexican star Ninel Conde agrees, being a busy parent does not exclude the fact that you are a parent. For instance, she tries to spend as much time with her children as possible, even though sometimes, her career does not allow her to. She takes her baby boy Emmanuel everywhere – and whenever they are together, nothing else seems to matter.
Ways to spend quality time with your love(s):
Add a 15-minute morning routine dedicated to your kids
Hang out with them and play cool games!
Go out for a walk or a nice hike
Help them develop their studying skills and organize their school work
Exercise with them
Cook together and try out new recipes!
2. Be the Example They Need
Michelle and Barack Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, grew up to be wonderful, intelligent women ready to take on any obstacle on their way. “If you are not ready to be the example they need, you won’t be able to teach them anything,” writes Sarah Kabalevsky, co-founder at CA EduBirdie essay writing service. “Children do exactly what they see in the family, so make sure your parenting style fits their needs,” ends Sarah. They must learn how to grow beautiful and independent – and you’re the only one who can teach them that by setting an example.
Teach them how valuable life is
Explain them your values and how you live up to them
Show them how you respond in critical situations
Teach them that treating other people with respect means respecting yourself in the first place
Teach them to be kind, loving, open, and sharing
Teach them to be honest – never lie to them!
3. Let Them Be Free!
Will Smith thinks that “letting kids take responsibility for their actions” teaches them more about freedom and independence than anything else could. His children, Jared, Trey, and Willow are so mature, so intelligent, so powerful! You can tell that Will has an uncanny parenting philosophy which helped his children grow into beautiful adults.
Before sending them off to school, talk to them about anything they want, answer all the questions they have, and teach them to question everything in general. Always question everything!
4. Encourage Them & Their Activities
Famous actress Reese Witherspoon teaches us that encouraging children to think independently and supporting their activities is critical, especially during their adolescence years. Her daughter Ava and son Deacon are smart kids with cool personalities, both of them having intrinsic motivation and high self-esteem.
Encouraging children to pursue whichever career they want to (and not forcing them to follow your path), helping them grow into beautiful individuals, teaching them what love is, and supporting them in their activities will not only improve your parent-child relationship, but it will also make them trust you more. When they decide to trust you fully, they’ll share amazing experiences and open-up completely, helping you help them grow.
5. Help Them Engage in Problem Solving
Mark Steins, TV Host and Journalist, shares his opinion on raising children. “Model the behavior you want your kids to have,” says Steins, “and help them become what they need to be.” As a parent, Mark has constantly come up with cool challenges for his kids, like Sunday-evening chess games, fun problem-solving games, or scavenger hunts. He thinks that the best way to help your children grow into sharp-witted individuals is by training them since they are little.
Like it or not, the parenting method you choose will affect your children’s lives once and for all. So, make sure you consider the pros and cons to choosing one method or the other. In the end, don’t forget to teach them how to love, how to be passionate, how to laugh – basically, how to live life. There are many people walking through life but never seizing the day. As long as you teach your kids the opposite, you should be fine. Good luck, lucky parent!
