DVD Review “22 Jump Street”

Starring: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Amber Stevens, Wyatt Russell, Jillian Bell
Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: Sony
DVD Release Date: November 18, 2014
Run Time: 112 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 2 out of 5 stars

You got to admit, making “21 Jump Street” with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum was definitely a risk…but it paid off soooo well. The first film is a blast all around but surprisingly the sequel is even better than the first. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are a great team and really play off each other very well. It is a really well-balanced action/comedy/buddy flick! Non-stop action and laughs. Directors Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street”, “The Lego Movie”) strike gold again here. My only question: when is “23 Jump Street” coming out?

Official Premise: After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case – they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship.

No idea why a solo DVD is even released anymore when most films come in a combo pack. The special features are 10x better on the Blu-ray release for this film. We get an abridged version here. There is an audio commentary with the directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, which is an absolutely blast. “The Perfect Couple of Directors” takes a look at the directing duo. “Line-O-Ramas” are a bunch of funny sequences from the film and lastly there are 22 deleted & extended scenes…on the Blu-ray. We get a faction of that here with optional directors’ commentary.

Run Time: 76 minutes

Film: 4 out of 5 stars

When you think about Batman, you might be also not about him being powerful and moving but after watching this documentary, I do not think I will ever think about him in the same way. This film, funded by more than 1,100 people from around the world, shows how the characters has proven to be an inspiration to millions of people facing disease, disability or hardship. “Legends of the Knight” follows encourages people to find your own courageous paths. We really see how important the character of Batman is to people. Very moving and definitely quite emotional.

Official Premise: Batman has always held a special place in the hearts of superhero fans. Orphaned at a young age, he is an emotionally intense mortal whose compassion and sense of justice have helped him rise to heroic heights. “Legends of the Knight” weaves together the uplifting true stories of individuals who have embraced their inner superhero, overcome devastating obstacles, and unselfishly given to their communities because of their love for the Caped Crusader.

This film was funded online by fans and is being released on DVD and Digital HD. The running time is just under 80 minutes but it is very effective. Be sure to have a tissue on hand since this one got me a few times. The special features included are a little light. I would have expected a little more perhaps some more extended interviews and possibly focus on the crowd funding. Included is a Charity Screenings featurette. There are just shy of 15 minutes of delete scenes included. Lastly there is a trailer included.

DVD Review “Wicked, Wicked”

Starring: Starring Tiffany Bolling, David Bailey, Randolph Roberts, Edd Byrnes, Diane McBain, Madeleine Sherwood and Arthur O’Connell
Director: Richard L. Bare
Distributed by: Warner Archive
Release Date: October 28, 2014
MPAA Rating: PG
Running Time: 95 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The idea for “Wicked, Wicked” is very interesting. It was presented in anamorphic “Duo-Vision” aka a fancy way to say split-screen today. I think the idea of watch the film from the eyes of the hunter and the hunted is a really neat idea. It is a mixture of horror, suspense and comedy thought, think this would have been much more effective if it kept it focused on the horror. Definitely shows it’s age but this is a still a fun time and worth checking out for sure on DVD.

Official Premise: To experience the grisly goings’on of Wicked. Wicked, your right eye has to know what your left eye is doing! Filmed in a split-screen process dubbed Duo-vision. this guilty pleasure follows a psycho electrician at an elegant California resort who prefers blondes,.,dismembered. It simultaneously follows, on the other half of the screen, the gorgeous, golden-haired guests who are unaware they’ll soon be checking out.

In order for Warner Archive to release this film on DVD, there are reports that it received an extensive two-year restoration. They are making it available as part of their Made-to-Order DVDs. It is presented in a 16×9 Letterbox with an original 2.40:1 aspect ratio and boasts a solid stereo soundtrack, which works well with the use of the organ music created for the 1925 silent classic “Phantom of the Opera”. The only special features included on this DVD is a trailer.

Having a two year old daughter, I have to admit that I watch quite a bit of “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic”. She is completely obsessed with the show and its characters. As a “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) fan it was great to see cameos by John DeLancy (aka Q from “Star Trek: TNG”). The show is very colorful and features some really fun songs. This season was totally about 20% cooler than season 3. A fifth season is currently into the works for 2015.

Official Premise: Twilight Sparkle may be a princess now, but that doesn’t mean she can’t have fun! Join Twilight and her very best friends (Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Spike) as they continue to have the absolute best adventures in all of Equestria!

This four-disc DVD set features all 26 episodes from the fourth season of “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic”. I still waitch that this show was released on Blu-ray like the “Equestrian Girls” movies. There are also some decent bonus features included. There is a recording of the 2014 San Diego Comic Con Pony Panel, which is not really for the kiddies but definitely for the old Pony fans. There are also some Sing-Alongs from the season’s songs.

DVD Review “Phineas & Ferb: Star Wars”

Actors: Vincent Martella, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Dan Povenmire, Ashley Tisdale, Alyson Stoner
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Rating: Not Rated
DVD Release Date: November 11, 2014
Running Time: 150 minutes

Special: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

“Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars” is not the Disney animated series’ first crossover episode. The show also went head to head with Marvel superheros last summer. When it comes to “Star Wars”, I am interested despite the crossover. Honestly, my interest in “Phineas & Ferb” has decreased to almost nothing since 2007. They did do a great job with mashing up “Star Wars” universe. This DVD is called “Star Wars IV: A New Hope – Retold and ReFERBished”, so one might assume that this will not be the last crossover either. The music is very catchy, clever and just plain fun. This DVD also includes six bonus episodes and a Carbonite Perry keychain. Calling all “Star Wars” fans, this is the crossover that you are looking for!

Official Premise: A couple of summers ago in a galaxy far, far away, Phineas and Ferb are happily basking in the glow of Tatooine’s twin suns — until plans for the Death Star accidentally fall into their hands, thrusting them (and Agent P) into a galactic rebellion and an epic struggle of good versus evil in “Phineas & Ferb: Star Wars”. Will Phineas and Ferb be able to resist the Dark Side? Will Stormtrooper Candace finally bust a Rebel? Can Agent P stop Darthenshmirtz from using his Force-powered “Sith-Inator”? Featuring five additional episodes for over two hours of action-packed fun, this mind-blowing, intergalactic adventure is a blast for all ages. May the Ferb be with you… always.

I know that kids don’t care if their cartoons are released on DVD or Blu-ray but there are a lot of big kids that might. This would have been epic on Blu-ray with the action, the animation and the music. Besides, “Phineas & Ferb: Star Wars” special, there are six additional bonus episodes including Be”For Your Ice Only/Happy New Year!”; “Steampunx/It’s No Picnic”; “Terrifying Tri-State Trilogy Of Terror (Parts 1 And 2); “Doof 101/Father’s Day” and “Tales From The Resistance” (Parts 1 And 2). If you enjoy “Phineas and Ferb”, this is a must have. If you have never seen the show once yet love “Star Wars”, this will be a great way to introduce you to the very funny characters and see “Star Wars” retold and reFERBished.

I grew up watching MTV and I discovered a show called “The State” back in the mid-90’s that changed and shaped my comedic sense of humor. This show was outstanding and spawned the careers of many talents actors. “Reno 911” is a project that includes was created and starred “The State” cast members Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Thomas Lennon. This show was so outrageous and fun. It ran for six seasons on Cartoon Network. “The State” might have been canceled in 1995 but this show lived on for a long time and delivered non-stop laughs. Now, finally it is available for the first time as a complete uncensored series. Don’t miss this!

Whether the Deputies are busting down the doors of a meth lab or busting “moves” at a local nightspot, the Reno 911! camera doesn’t blink.

This half-hour ensemble comedy co-starred Carlos Alazraqui, Mary Birdsong, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Niecy Nash and Cedric Yarbrough. This show was also know for amazing guest stars including Aziz Ansari, Michael Ian Black, Wayne Brady, Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, Zach Galifianakis, Seth Green, Chelsea Handler, Jonah Hill, Cheryl Hines, Rob Huebel, David Koechner, Lorenzo Lamas, George Lopez, Joe Lo Truglio, Jane Lynch, Ken Marino, Patton Oswalt, Paul Reubens, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Paul Scheer, Nick Swardson, David Wain, Matt Walsh and Rainn Wilson…just a name a few over the six seasons.

Paramount did make sure thought that this release was jam-packed with some kick-ass special features. This DVD includes all 88 episodes from this series. There are audio commentary tracks on 32 of them. It may not seem like a lot but that is a shit load of episodes. These are not even good either…they are comedy gold. There is over an hour of alternate, extended and deleted scenes, as well as almost two hours of outtakes. TWO hours of outtakes!! My face was hurting so bad from laughing. Lastly there are two featurettes “Cops Psychology: Inside the minds of Reno’s Deputies” and “Profiles in Valor” rounding out these amazing extras.

DVD Review “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Daniel Tiger’s Happy Holidays”

Actors: Daniel Tiger and Friends
Directors: Fred Rogers Company
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: PBS (DIRECT)
DVD Release Date: November 4, 2014
Run Time: 100 minutes

Our Score: 5 out of 5 stars

I love the idea of the show “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” because it really help kids learn a lot and is still alot of this. “Daniel Tiger’s Happy Holidays” includes 7 Grr-ific Tales! Snowflake Day! (a special holiday double episode); “Katerina’s Costume”; “Dress Up Day”; Something Special for Dad”; “I Love You, Mom”; “Thank You, Grandpere Tiger!” and “Neighborhood Thank You Day”. Plus it comes with a Daniel Tiger figurine that has movable head and arms. That was the first thing that my daughter says “DADDY!! IT MOVES!!”. If you love the show, this is a must buy and priced very right!

Official Premise: Hi neighbor! Meet Daniel Tiger, and welcome to his neighborhood! Four-year-old Daniel Tiger invites young viewers directly into his world, giving them a kid s eye view of his life and making them feel like one of his neighbors. As they follow Daniel s everyday adventures, preschoolers and their families learn fun and practical strategies and skills necessary for dealing with everyday experiences, like showing appreciation to friends and loved ones, dressing up for Halloween, and celebrating holidays.

I remember watching “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” when I was a kid. Now it is kind of a trip for me to have my own kid watch the new generation of that show with “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood”. I also like that this show keeps the legacy of Fred Rogers alive and working for today’s children. The music in this series is very catchy and a lot of fun. I found my daughter (trying to) whistle along it days after watching. I have a feeling that “Snowflake Day!” episode is going to be getting a lot of play over the next few months.

Just in time for it’s 35th anniversary “WKRP In Cincinnati” finally is available on DVD as a complete series, thanks to Shout! Factory. This show was jam-packed with some amazing tunes. I just to love watching as a kid just to hear the music. This 13-disc set includes over 90% of the show’s original music, which is a great accomplishment for Shout! I recently just went through this with “The Wonder Years: The Complete Series”, it has over 400 music clearances in it. This series had a history of music rights restrictions. If you are a fan of this show, I think you will be happy with the results here. Shout! did their best to make sure that every scene uncut and with as much original music as possible. This is a vast improvement over the past Fox DVD release for sure.

Official Premise: Pairing an impeccable ensemble cast with sharp wit and great tunes, WKRP In Cincinnati celebrated four amazing seasons, making it the quintessential sitcom for music lovers. Join everyone’s favorite radio DJs—the rockin’ Dr. Johnny Fever (Howard Hesseman) and the soulful Venus Flytrap (Tim Reid)—as they weave through the inner-office antics of the crazy WKRP staff; including the station’s program director Andy (Gary Sandy), indecisive manager Arthur (Gordon Jump), advertising executive Herb (Frank Bonner), quirky news man Les Nessman (Richard Sanders), young ingénue Bailey (Jan Smithers) and, of course, the station’s lovely receptionist, Jennifer (Loni Anderson).

Just to name a few, here are some of the artists included on this DVD release: AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Booker T And The MG’s, Boston, The Cars, Chicago, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Foreigner, Marvin Gaye, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship, Elton John, Janis Joplin, B.B. King, Kool And the Gang, Huey Lewis & The News, Kenny Loggins, Chuck Mangione, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney and Wings, Van Morrison, Randy Newman, Olivia Newton-John, Ted Nugent, Tom Petty, The Polce, Elvis Presley, Queen, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Styx, James Taylor, Luther Vandross, The Who and Neil Young.

“WKRP In Cincinnati: The Complete Series” includes some decent special features. There are two featurettes includes. The second one is “A Fish Story” which discuss the behind the season battles over the season one episode. “WKRP In Cincinnati: A Paley Center Reunion” is panel discussion from 2014 featuring cast members Howard Hesseman, Loni Anderson, Tim Reid, Gary Sandy, and Jan Smithers, Executive Producer / Writer Hugh Wilson, Director Asaad Kelada, and the Director of the show’s pilot, Jay Sandrich, all moderated by rock radio legend Jim Ladd.

DVD Review “Happy Christmas”

Actors: Anna Kendrick, Melaine Lynskey
Director: Joe Swanberg
Rated: R (Restricted)
Studio: Paramount
Release Date: November 11, 2014
Run Time: 82 minutes

Film: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: N/A

Personally, I am not huge fan of writer/director Joe Swanberg. Really hated his film “Drinking Buddies”. So I decided to give this one a try due to my love for Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (“Pitch Perfect”). Despite the title, the film does really scream holiday spirit. I obviously wasn’t the right audience of this film. I am finding that I have very little patience for pretentious indie dramedies. A pass for me for sure but I am sure many trendy film buffs are going to gobble this dysfunctional family flick right up.

Official Premise: Anna Kendrick plays Jenny, an irresponsible 20-something who comes to Chicago to live with her older brother Jeff (Swanberg), a young filmmaker living a happy existence with his novelist wife Kelly (Lynskey) and their two-year-old son. Jenny’s arrival shakes up their quiet domesticity as she and her friend Carson (Dunham) instigate an evolution in Kelly’s life and career. Meanwhile, Jenny strikes up a rocky relationship with the family’s baby sitter-cum-pot dealer (Webber).

The rest of the cast includes Melanie Lynskey (“Heavenly Creatures”), Mark Webber (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), Lena Dunham (“Girls”) and Joe Swanberg (“Drinking Buddies”). Honestly, not fond of any of the other cast. Good performances surely but they don’t really win me over. Paramount is only giving this film a DVD only release, not that this film would have really shines on Blu-ray either, just noting its faith in this film. There is no digital HD copy included either here. Lastly, there are no special features included at all.

DVD Review “The Wonder Years: The Complete Series”

Growing up in the 80’s, one of the highlights for me on television was always “The Wonder Years”. The cast was about the same age as me when the show aired, so I was able to relate to a lot of the issues that the series presented. This complete series has never before been released on DVD in its entirety. StarVista Entertainment/Time Life is presenting this as a 26-disc collector’s set featuring all 115 episodes housed in a replica metal locker. This is literally one of the best DVD presentations that I have honestly ever seen for a series. It is also jam-packed with over 23 hours of specially-produced bonus programming including featurettes, an incredible cast reunion 16 years in the making and never-before-seen outtakes. If you are looking to revisit the Arnold family and take a trip down memory lane, this is a wonderful release and I highly recommend it. Giving this a 5 out of 5 stars is not even nearly enough to give it the respect that it deserves.

Official Premise: It was 1968 — the year of Nixon and space walks and Mod Squad and Vietnam. Enter Kevin Arnold (Savage), a sixth grader at Kennedy Junior High School. Set against the suburban backdrop of Anytown, USA, Kevin sought to minimize his teenage angst while dealing with an older, noogie-happy brother Wayne (Jason Hervey), a rebellious sister, Karen (Olivia d’Abo), distant, workaholic father, Jack (Dan Lauria) and doting housewife mother, Norma (Alley Mills). Add to the mix Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano), his nerdy, allergy-riddled best friend, a potential love interest in winsome girl-next-door Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) and narration by an older, wiser, wittier Kevin (voiced by Daniel Stern) to add perspective to the nostalgia, and you have the perfect recipe for TV greatness.

One of the biggest aspects that I remember from this series was the music. This show introduced me to numerous songs and bands in my early years. What is amazing to find out is that the team at StarVista Entertainment/Time Life went above and beyond to ensure that the series was delivered in its most available entirety. This release received over 400 clearances and includes near 300 songs from many iconic artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and The Rolling Stones, plus Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Many More!  I am happy that people behind this release were able to put in the time and effort to deliver this series with all this great music still included. That is definitely not an easy (and cheap) task to deliver. They could have easy just cut these songs and saved a butt load of money but they decided to take this route

When I hear certain songs like “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” by The Byrds, “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen, “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream, Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” The Trogg’s “Wild Thing,” “Good Vibrations” and “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” by The Beach Boys, “My Girl” by The Temptations, I am literally transported back to my parents house and find myself sitting in front of the TV watching this show. Of course let’s not forget the show’s timeless theme song “With a Little Help from My Friends” by Joe Cocker. This song is just so amazing and timeless is really the best way to describe it…another 100 years in the future it will still be just as effective and hopefully still synonymous with this show.

Amongst the over 23 hours of bonus features, some of the new features included are a commentary track on the first kiss outtakes by Fred (Savage) and Danica (McKellar) on all six takes of the legendary first kiss from Pilot episode, never before available. “That’s a Wrap! Mark B. Perry’s Farewell Set Tour Season 5” features Writer/Producer Mark B. Perry’s home video set tour from the end of his final season on the show, along with new commentary from him. “From the Vault: Alley Mills and Bob Brush Letters” features Alley Mills reading her emotional, written conversation with Executive Producer Bob Brush about the show’s finale. The one-hour finale as it was originally aired on ABC on May 12, 1993, including a deleted scene not included in the half-hour broadcasts of the final two episodes.

There are ten brand-new featurettes inclluding”With A Little Help From My Friends: The Early Days of The Wonder Years, “The Times They Are A-Changin'”: The Era, “My Generation”: The Kids Grow Up, “When A Man Loves A Woman”: Kevin & Winnie Forever, “Bookends”: Kevin & Paul, “A Family Affair”: At Home With The Arnolds, “”I Love You For Sentimental Reasons”: Fan-Favorite Episodes, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”: The Wonder Years’ Love Stories, “ABC”: Teachers That Made A Difference and “Both Sides Now”: The Music That Made The Moments. My favorite was the 2014 Los Angeles cast reunion, featuring all key cast together for the first time in 16 years.

There are also extensive individual interviews with all seven key cast members (Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Josh Saviano, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Olivia d’Abo and Jason Hervey), as well as with notable actors featured as guest stars or in recurring roles, such as David Schwimmer, Ben Stein, Bob Picardo and Seth Green; plus, in-depth interviews with narrator Daniel Stern, Neal Marlens, Carol Black, Bob Brush and other production personnel. You can tell that the people that put together this release were fans of the show themselves. This is full of such amazing fan service that it will leave everyone satisfied.

DVD Review “Monika

Actors: C. Thomas Howell, Cerina Vincent, Jason Wiles, Lew Temple
Directors: Steven R. Monroe
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Inception Media Group
DVD Release Date: September 9, 2014
Run Time: 90 minutes

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

From the premise of “Monika” is from director, Steven R. Monroe, is the guy behind the 2010 remake of “I Spit On Your Grave” and it stars Jason Wiles (“Third Watch”) and Cerina Vincent (“Cabin Fever”). Cerina is extremely bad-ass in the role but I feel like she was under used. According to the cover art, it shows her and only her but she is more supporting than lead in the film. The story is a bit confusing and the twist honestly comes a little too late to be effective enough. I was left curious and scratching my head with questions for too long. Worth renting if you are looking for some decent action but just don’t expect too much.

Official Premise: Reagan Tyler is a man troubled by visions and premonitions. In a cheap Las Vegas motel, he meets Monika, a beautiful young woman with seduction and revenge on her mind. Their brief encounter draws Regan into a surreal cat and mouse hunt for the hit-man who had earlier murdered Monika’s sister. In the best tradition of grind-house action, Monika takes Reagan on her mission for justice and she isn’t afraid to spill blood along the way. In this full throttle assassin meets assassin showdown, Monika packs a secret more powerful than her guns…she just may be invincible.

I was really hoping for a hardcore revenge thriller ala “Kill Bill” but due to the story issues, I was really not get into this film much. I was excited to see Cerina show off her fancy gun work. In fact for the film, she actually went to train shooting prior to shooting, so that is some dedication. I think if they would have focused more on Cerina’s character and went a bit easier with the plot twists, this could have been much more effective. There are no special features included on this DVD.

DVD Review “Lamb of God: As the Palaces Burn”

Starring: Lamb of God
Director: Don Argot
Rated: Unrated
Studio: 9.14 Pictures
Run Time: 121 minutes

Film: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Extras: 4 out of 5 stars

What starts out as a typical band related documentary quickly becomes much more than that. “As the Palaces Burn” is the latest DVD release from Richmond, Virginia’s Lamb of God. Directed by Don Argot and being released via Epic Records and 9.14 Pictures the 2 disc documentary runs just over a combined 4 hours and is mixed in stunning 5.1 Surround Sound and PCM Uncompressed Stereo.

To quote my previous review of the films theatrical release “Whether you are a fan of Lamb of God’s music or not I strongly urge you to see this film.” The film was just as powerful the second time around as when I first saw it a few months back. This is not just another pieced together making of documentary looking at one of heavy metals biggest bands. That may have been the original intent however mid way through the film it starts to document the series of events which lead to the incarceration of lead singer D. Randall Blythes incarceration in the Czech Republic for the charge of Manslaughter.

As the film delves deeper into these events the film takes its most dramatic turn as it shows the immense amount of emotion the band members have for one another as well as Randy’s own strength throughout the entire time of his incarceration and subsequent return to the Czech Republic to stand trial for these clearly bogus charges. Director Don Argot did a great job capturing everything I enjoy seeing in a film of this nature. Candid interviews with not only the band but with fans and fellow musicians gave the film a number of different perspectives that helped affirm the bands place in the music world and the impact the events involving Randy had on those both close to him and those from afar. The feature presentation of the film wraps up with a really cool Q and A session with not only the film’s director but also with the band themselves.

Clocking in at just over 2 hours the special features portion of the film plays like an alternate version of feature presentation. Further in-depth interviews with the band, fans and friends such as Slash and Dave Brockie reaffirm the impact the band has on it fans not only here in the states but all over the world. It was really great to see and hear more of the back stories of those who appear in the film as this bonus footage includes unedited takes from a number of interviews as well as extended footage which initially was only show in short edited clips. This film is a must have!
