Commenting on their upcoming co-headline run, Mark Morton, lead guitarist of LAMB OF GOD, adds, “The world has never needed heavy more than it does today and top to bottom, this tour delivers! LAMB OF GOD has toured with and been friends with all of these bands for years, but for all of us to be on the same bill is something extra special. Come early and stay late. This is THE metal tour of the year.”

Trivium’s Matt Heafy adds, “We are happy to be a part of the biggest real metal tour of the year. This tour is the main event and represents heavy metal and the culture that goes with it.“

After playing shows with all of these guys for years, 2020 is going to feel like a kick ass reunion. See you on the road, Jesterheads!”

Namm 2020, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA

2020 Winter Namm

Thursday, January 16th – Sunday, January 19th 2020
Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA

Our Score: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

The multi story Anaheim Convention Center was over flowing with musical buzz recently as the venue once again played host to the annual Namm (Nation Association of Music Merchants) Convention. The trade show which showcases the latest and most innovative editions to the music instrument market is the place to be for dealers, vendors, artists and anyone else lucky enough to be able to attend the industry only event. Over the course of four days the biggest companies in music instrumentation pull out all the stops to ensure their respective products and brands get noticed amongst the ever growing sea of competitors.

As we made away into the towering Anaheim Convention Center we quickly devised a plan as to how we were going to tackle this at times overwhelming environment. This year we decided to work our way from the top down. Housed on floors two and three were some of the industry’s biggest companies which consisted of Fender, Gibson, Paul Reed Smith and Marshall to name just a few. The Gibson area was easily the most impressive as not only did it sport rows and rows of guitars from its three brands Gibson, Epiphone and Kramer, the large space also sported multiple player stations complete with headphones allowing attendees to check out the instrument of their choice in a somewhat isolated space. Having set ups like this are a must in an environment where the outside din of noise causes even standard person to person conversation to become difficult. At the end of the room was a full performance stage which over the course of the four days was graced by several Gibson artists including Slash, Lzzy Hale and Phil X of Bon Jovi.

Fender also sported a noteworthy space which took on more of a museum type approach complete with velvet ropes and ornate framing of some of its premier instruments. Attendees also could catch a glimpse on the new George Harrison “Rocky” Stratocaster guitar which was showcased upon a spinning day-glow background which teased the viewer’s senses. Making our way down the escalators to the main floor we casually passed the likes of Dave Amato of Reo Speedwagon and Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult talking with attendees about some of their latest projects and happenings.

Floors two and three are tame compared to the main floor which houses not only stringed instruments but also percussion, brass instrumentation and various other musical odds and ends. You never know who or what you will stumble upon when wandering around the cavernous hall. Trekking from front to back we took in displays by companies such as Ace Products Group, Keisel guitars, Kemper Profiling, SJC Drums and Zildjian cymbals. While navigating the semi-chaotic walks ways to each of these booths we inadvertently bumped into the likes of Skidrow bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave “Snake “Sabo, as well as Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, guitarist Devin Townsend  and bassist Victor Wooten who was dazzling onlookers during one of several demo’s he had scheduled.

As the weekend slowly came to a close we left the Anaheim Convention center with tired legs, ringing ears and wish list’s a mile long. Year after year Namm continues to raise the bar not only with the amount of exhibitors they showcase but also in how the event organizers handle the ever growing crowds. Security checks were fast and efficient as was badge registration and pick up resulting in very few if any lines to wait in. You would think with an event this big there would be a few hiccups along the way and, if there was anything like that attendees were unaware as the event had a comfortable, somewhat stress free feel that even the city of Anaheim itself was in on as many area business’s were offering discounts to convention attendees which was really great.

Needless to say MediaMikes.com had a great time covering this year’s event and the only thing we would change is to be able to find more time during the next event to take it all in as there is just so much cool stuff going on you don’t want to miss anything.

Is 2020 Going To Be The Year Of Mobile?

After a decade with our smartphones, mobile consumption has never been higher. Most people today cannot be separated from their smartphones and more industries are now turning their attention to mobile devices. But how do most people consume media and content today, and will it change in the following decade? Let’s find out.

Movies & TV

Netflix is one of the most popular ways to watch movies and television shows. Users can watch content anywhere they have an internet connection but official stats from the media firm have revealed that its users prefer watching on content on their televisions in the long run.

Statistics from Netflix revealed that most customers sign up on either laptops (40%) or mobile devices (30%) rather than televisions (25%) or tablet devices (5%). However, viewing patterns change the longer customers are registered with Netflix. Over a six month period, the 30% of users who registered on a mobile device have dropped to 10%. The percentage of users on a laptop dropped from 40% at sign-up to 15% at six months. Most customers transitioned to a bigger screen as the number of people who registered via television (25%) rose to a whopping 70%.

However, official YouTube stats reveal that over 70% of its users watch content on their smartphone devices while the rest mostly comes from desktop computers and laptops.

Games

In 2018, a poll from mobile strategy agency Tappable found that smartphone devices are now the preferred gaming device. Tappable’s poll queried male and female gamers and found that 42% of the people surveyed preferred gaming on their smartphones while 32% preferred consoles and 26% preferred their PC.

Statistics from WEPC have revealed that the most popular games on Android smartphones devices in 2017 were casual (59.6%), puzzle (57.29%), and arcade (55.6%). The stats also found that around 10% of Android smartphone users enjoyed playing casino games such as mobile slots, many of which are played through casino apps rather than at in-browser online casinos. The type of games least popular on Android devices were family and sports games (0.95% and 0.59%).

Books & Music

There has been worry that print publishing may eventually completely cease due to the rising popularity of e-books and digital reading. However, a recent report from Neilsen revealed that there’s been an increase in the sales of physical books compared to those read on smartphone devices.

Neilsen reported that around 63% of physical book sales come from people under the age of 44 compared to 37% of book sales from those 45 and over. Contrarily, 52% of e-book sales came from people over the age of 45 while the remaining 48% of digital book sales were made by those aged 44 or under. Neilsen’s stats suggest that older people prefer reading on smartphone devices, tablets and e-book readers while younger generations prefer real books.

A similar study from 2017 by Neilsen found that the sales of printed books had risen and the sales of e-books dropped, again suggested that most people prefer reading printed books over e-books.

Meanwhile, music consumption has mostly gone completely digital. Lasy year, IFPI released a report revealing that people listen to around 18 hours of music a week. The IFPI surveyed 34,000 people across 21 countries and found that 89% of respondents use an on-demand streaming service to listen to music.

The report also found that video accounts for around 47% of on-demand music streaming, with YouTube dominating the market. This compares to around 37% who prefer paid audio streaming and 15% who enjoy free audio streaming.

Mobiles: On Or Off?

The statistics laid out above indicate that, aside from gaming, most people still prefer consuming media off their mobiles. However, studies have confirmed that a majority of people still spend hours on their smartphone devices, mostly browsing the internet, interacting with other people and playing games.

With the rise of streaming services, the constant expanding size of mobile phones, and the rise of video game streaming, we may soon see some of these statistics change within the next decade as more people turn to their mobiles.

BAD RELIGION was one of my first loves,” says ALKALINE TRIO co-lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba. “I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard ‘Suffer’ around age 12. They are one of the very reasons I started playing punk rock music and continue to today. This tour is going to be epic on many levels. We’ve done Warped Tour and festival shows many times over the years, but this will be the first time it’s just us and I couldn’t be more thrilled!”

Coming up on 40 years as a band, BAD RELIGION formed in 1980 in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The band has become synonymous with intelligent and provocative West Coast punk rock and are considered one of the most influential and important bands in the genre. BAD RELIGION has continually pushed social boundaries and questioned authority and beliefs armed only with propulsive guitars, charging drumbeats, thoughtful lyrics and an undying will to inspire and provoke anyone who will listen.

The band recently released 17th studio album, “Age Of Unreason”. The critically acclaimed record offers a fiery and intensely relevant musical response to the times, with songs that address a myriad of socio-political maladies, including conspiracy theories, racist rallies, Trump‘s election, the erosion of the middle class, alternative facts and more. There is a stylistic consistency to the band’s iconic and influential sound — hard fast beats, big hooks and rousing choruses, yet each new song remains distinctive, utilizing composition, melody and lyrics to deliver a unique narrative consistent with the band’s longstanding humanist worldview.

Since emerging in 1996, ALKALINE TRIO have become one of punk rock’s most progressive and unique bands of the last decade, rousing a dedicated legion of passionate supporters with nine fan-adored albums and relentless worldwide touring. The band’s recent release, “Is This Thing Cursed?”, debuted No. 2 on the current alternative albums chart, No. 9 on the top current albums chart and No. 68 on the Billboard 200. The album hearkens to the creative process of the early days, when the band rehearsed in a tiny apartment on the edge of Chicago’s Humboldt Park in the band’s hometown. Produced and mixed by Cameron Webb (PENNYWISEMOTÖRHEAD), it is the first ALKALINE TRIO album written almost entirely in the studio. According to the band, the album-making process was similar to that of “Maybe I’ll Catch Fire” — ALKALINE TRIO‘s darkly charged sophomore full-length.

LIZ PHAIR TO JOIN ALANIS MORISSETTE ON HER JAGGED LITTLE PILL TOUR SUMMER 2020

DEBUT MEMOIR, HORROR STORIES (RANDOM HOUSE) OUT NOW

This coming summer, Liz Phair will join Alanis Morissette on her newly announced 31-date North American tour which kicks off June 2nd, 2020 in Portland, OR. Produced by Live Nation, the tour will celebrate 25 years of JAGGED LITTLE PILL and will also feature Phair and Morisette contemporaries, Garbage. It will hit cities like Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, and Chicago before wrapping in Nashville, TN on July 25th, 2020.

The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter whose debut album, Exile In Guyville, is considered by music critics to be a landmark of indie rock, has been a recording artist and touring performer for twenty-five years, paving the way for countless music artists, particularly women, who count her among their major influences. 2018 marked the 25th Anniversary of Exile in Guyville and to celebrate, Matador Records reissued the record along with a box-set of Phair’s earlier work, entitled Girly-Sound to Guyville, which was met with rapturous response upon its release. Phair’s debut was released to international acclaim; it has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, by Pitchfork as one of the 100 Greatest albums of the 90’s and is considered one of the most accomplished debut albums for any artist in any genre to date.

Phair has sold over five million records worldwide, with three US gold albums and two Grammy nominations. More than two decades after the release of her debut, Phair’s influence in contemporary music, and particularly over female voices in alternative music, can be felt today more than ever.

In 2019, Liz Phair released her critically revered memoir, Horror Stories. In their review, NPR said, “there are so many things to admire about ‘Horror Stories’, it’s hard to list them all. But the real star of Horror Stories is Phair’s elegant but unpretentious writing, which proves she’s as adept at writing prose as she is at writing songs. And anyone familiar with her music knows how great a thing that is.”

This year, she also released her first new music in years, the single “Good Side.” “Good Side” found her reunited with producer Brad Wood, who she teamed up with on Exile In GuyvilleWhip-Smart, and whitechocolatespaceegg. After a long hiatus from working together, they’re now nearly finished with a new album that’s due out in 2020.

Presales for the tour will begin on December 10 at 11 AM local time and tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, December 13th at 11 AM local time at LiveNation.com.

VIP packages will be available starting with the presale. Citi is the official presale credit card for the tour. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase U.S. presale tickets beginning Wednesday, December 11th at 11 AM local time until Thursday, December 12th at 12 PM local time through Citi’s Entertainment program.

DVD Review “Sealab 2020: The Complete Series”

Created by: Hanna-Barbera
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Distributed by: Warner Archive
Running Time: 280 minutes

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

When it comes to “Sealab 2020”, I can’t help but relate it back to the Adult Swim take-off “Sealab 2021”, which pokes fun at the series and one of my favorites TV series. “Sealab 2020” may not be one of Hanna-Barbera’s best projects but it is fun series. I mean who doesn’t like shark attacks, giant octopus and squids…this show has got it all.

Thanks to Warner Archive for finally releasing this show in its complete entirety. All 13 episodes are include in this collection. It is presented full screen with aspect ratio of 1.37:1. The show looks great on DVD as to all releases from Warner Archive. If you are a fan of this zany-yet-fun cartoon series, I would highly recommended this release.

Synopsis:
“This is the year two thousand and twenty. The place is the Challenger Sea Mount, the top of an underwater mountain, a complex beneath the sea. Two hundred and fifty men, women and children live here. Each of them, a scientist pioneer. For this is our last frontier, a hostile environment which may hold the key to tomorrow. Each day, these oceanauts meet new challenges as they build their city beneath the sea. This is Sealab 2020.”

With these words setting the stage, and some funky bass riffs setting the tone, Saturday morning TV took the 70s underwater Sci Fi adventure plunge. Ably overseen by Hanna-Barbera’s ace action animators and voiced by a superb cast (including John Stephenson, Ross Martin, Jerry Dexter and Ann Jillian), the oceanauts of Sealab face seaquakes, sharks and falling satellites while finding the time to serve up lessons on environmentalism, tolerance, and teamwork across this 2-Disc, 13-Episode Collection
