Nickelodeon continues to celebrate the landmark 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants with an immersive experience at its booth that pays homage to the iconic first episode of the world’s most famous yellow sea sponge at New York Comic Con 2024. During the four-day convention, Nick’s booth on the convention center floor (#1523) will re-create and transport fans into the “Help Wanted” pilot episode with 3D-animation, augmented reality (AR) and replicas of SpongeBob’s pineapple home and The Krusty Krab.

Nickelodeon and Paramount invite fans to three panels during the convention: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Video Games and Virtual Worlds,” showcasing the popular video game world; “Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants 25th Anniversary Celebration,” a dive into the undersea world of Bikini Bottom and “Nickelodeon’s brand-new fantasy series, Max & the Midknights!,” a behind-the-scenes look at the all-new animated series.

Help wanted! Step inside SpongeBob’s pineapple home to prepare for the big job interview at The Krusty Krab. Fans will complete exercises in SpongeBob’s weight room to ensure they are in top fry cook shape. Once finished, guests can scan their personal QR code to collect their shareable video file on their device.

SpongeBob’s Hungry Anchovy Frenzy
Grab a spatula and step up to the virtual grill to feed those hungry, hungry anchovies! In this one-of-a-kind digital whack-a-mole game, players have one minute to fling out as many virtual Krabby Patties as possible to feed the hungry lunch crowd. It’s a mad dash to the end of the shift, where players can earn their rightful spot as The Krusty Krab’s newest and greatest fry cook!

Video game developers are well accustomed to revisiting different settings to develop their gaming worlds. Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Norse lands often get the video game treatment, as do modern battlefronts. Of course, they can also transport us to Middle Earth, the Star Wars Galaxy, and Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom.

While it might seem a little more mundane, plenty of popular games visit the world of farming and agriculture as a theme and setting for their product. While they might not be as explosive as God of War or Call of Duty, farming games and sims nestle perfectly into the casual gaming world. Moreover, the games can sometimes outstrip others in terms of world-building and social interactions.

Stardew Valley

Arguably the biggest name on this list, Stardew Valley is a beloved farming simulator where players can farm, fish, mine, and even build relationships in a quaint village. It’s wildly addictive, and it’s easy to see why it has tens of millions of downloads.

A gem in the beautiful Story of Seasons series, Pioneers of Olive Town gives you the chance to build and manage a farm in a vibrant, evolving town. We might add, however, that there were some technical glitches for the game on Nintendo Switch.

Barn Festival

A smash hit from the mighty Pragmatic Play, Barn Festival is a highly volatile slot spinner with amazing bonus features. It joins other farming-themed slot games like Wonder Farm and Chicken Chase on the Pulsz social gaming platform.

A vastly underrated title, Littlewoodfollows life in a quaint little village that was attacked by a wizard. You’re tasked with farming, fishing, and rebuilding Littlewood alongside the rest of the community.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

This one is a mini-masterpiece in our view. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines farming rice with action-packed platforming and combat, all set in a beautiful world inspired by Japanese mythology.

 

I think that, as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to expect a certain lever of respect and customer service, especially when I’m spending my money at their establishment.  Which brings us to my 8-month nightmare that was, is and continues to be Home Depot.

 

In late December 2023 our washing machine stopped working.  Knowing we needed a new one, my wife and I went to the local Home Depot, a store we have frequented for almost 20 years.  Since we were replacing the washer we decided to buy a new dryer as well and picked out what we wanted.

We paid to have them delivered and installed and a delivery date of January 15^th was set.  I was a little taken aback when the gentleman who set up our order told us that “98% of the delivery drivers don’t speak English so you might want to have a translator on your phone.”

 

The morning of the 15^th we received a text that our items would be delivered between 12:00 and 4:00 pm.  However, around 2:30 my wife received a call saying that they wouldn’t be delivering that day.  I was naturally disappointed as I had taken the day off to be home.  The delivery was then set for Wednesday, January 17^th.  Again, I took a day off work.  We received a text that our delivery window was between 7:00 and 11:00 am.  At approximately 10:45 m wife received a call telling her that the truck was running about a half hour late.  At 11:50 she received another call informing her that we would not be receiving our items that day.

 

Slightly upset, I called the store and, after talking to the manager – not a lot of help – was transferred to the appliance department where I was given the name and phone number of the person who owned the company that Home Depot contracts to do their deliveries and installations.  I called and left a message, and he called back.  I explained that I had now taken TWO days off and still had no washer and dryer.  He told me that it had been cold the night before and that none of his trucks had started.  I told him that we had gotten a call telling us the truck was on its way but running late.  He told me that was impossible because none of his trucks started.  Hmmmmmmm…

 

He told me that the trucks were being looked at and that they would resume deliveries the next day, Thursday.  I mentioned that I guess I would have to take another day off work but he told me, “no, I didn’t mean you.  We’ll be delivering to the people who wanted delivery on Thursday.”  I told him that I would like to have my items also delivered on Thursday, but he said he couldn’t because he didn’t have the appliances.  I asked how that was possible?  He was set to deliver them that day!  Hell, he was supposed to deliver them TWO DAYS AGO!!

Anyway, we set another delivery date of Saturday, January 2oth.  I texted him on Thursday and told him we had a family event to attend Saturday night – our granddaughter’s soccer game – and asked if we could get a morning delivery time.  I also called and left a message.  Saturday morning came and we didn’t hear anything from him.  Eventually, my wife called the store and was told that our appliances were scheduled for between 11:30 am and 430 pm.

 

As I had a critic meeting that afternoon, I wasn’t home when the delivery truck arrived.  Around 3:30 I called my wife and asked if we had a new washer and dryer.  She replied “no.”  She told me that the two delivery men had brought the appliances into the garage but didn’t have any tools.  They asked her if they could use ours.  THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY TOOLS!!!???  One of them motioned towards our old washer hookups and told my wife that we had the “wrong” kind of faucet – not sure if those were the words he used but that was how she understood it. The guy who sold us these appliances was definitely right about the language barrier.  He said we would need a plumber to come install new ones.  He then told her that he had a friend nearby who was a plumber that could fix it and install it for her.  As I wasn’t home, and we were tired of the delays, she agreed to have the “friend/plumber” come do it. I was mildly upset when I heard this and hurried home.

 

I arrived home around 4:00.  The “friend/plumber” arrived right after me.  He went into the garage, looked at the washer and told me he needed to replace both faucets.  I thought he would have them with him, but he had to go buy them, coincidentally at Home Depot.  At 5:45 pm he left, after changing the faucets and installing both the washer and dryer.  We did not get to go to the soccer game.  He charged us $165.00, which included the cost of parts he purchased.  The original delivery men – the ones that apparently worked all day “installing” appliances without tools – took the old dryer with them (I paid for that service) but left the old washer (which I also paid in advance to have removed), which meant one of us would have to park outside as it now occupied one side of the garage. (After multiple phone calls to the store, the washer was finally picked up the following Friday).

 

 

On Monday I went to the store and spoke with the manager.  When he heard my issues were with the delivery and installation, he told me that there was nothing he could do because “they don’t work for us.”  I told him that HOME DEPOT had sent them to MY HOUSE with items I had purchased from HOME DEPOT, so they most certainly did work for him.  I tried to use the analogy that if Ensign Red Shirt does his job poorly, Captain Kirk has to answer for it.  He stared blankly at me.  He again told me there was nothing he could do but would talk to Sylvia, who handles appliances, and have her call me.  When I told him about the delivery men suggesting their plumber “friend” he told me that employees are not allowed to recommend third party contractors unless approved by Home Depot.  Hmmm, I thought you just told me they WEREN’T employees!  He also told me that it was my wife’s fault that she’d “hired” the friend/plumber, so he wasn’t able to refund the $165.00 I paid for the parts and labor.

 

The next day I called the store and spoke with the manager again.  He said he had spoken to Sylvia, who also said that “they don’t work for Home Depot,” and that there was nothing she could do.  I told him that I would like to speak with Sylvia myself and was informed that she “doesn’t talk to customers.”

 

I then called the 1-800 Customer Service number and spoke with a rep who stressed that they had no control over their contractors.  I then asked to talk to a supervisor, who was helpful and said she would call me back after investigating.  The next day, after not hearing back, I called again and got another supervisor and he seemed genuine concerned.  He assured me that he would pass my issue up the line and that the escalation department would call me back.  He also gave me the escalation department’s email address so I could share my issues with them.

 

Since February, I’ve called and been assured that the escalation department would call me back three separate times.  Four times if you count the generic reply I received from my email to the Home Depot escalation department.

 

The more I thought about it the more I became curious of the situation.  Was this a running scam, either devised by Home Depot or the owner of the delivery company.  How many other times had they shown up to deliver an appliance, found a woman alone and told her that, while they couldn’t do the job, they had a friend that could. Was this just a local problem or national?  And how in the hell were they doing installations with no tools?!?!

 

As my concern grew, I attempted to call Matt Carey, Executive Vice President for Customer Service at the Home Depot Corporate Headquarters.   I went into the phone tree, noted that I wanted to speak with him and heard “do you want to speak to Matt Carey?”  I said “yes” and heard “transferring to Matt Carey.”  However, instead of being connected to his office, the line kicked back to the original phone tree (“press 2 for employment, etc).  I repeated this process several times with no luck.  I sent him an email detailing everything above and expressing my concerns but never received a reply.

 

Realizing I had a story to tell I even reached out to Home Depot Media Department in the hope they could explain what was going on but, despite leaving messages, I never got a return call.  Their new slogan should be

So, Tony Stark is back. That will be the big takeaway for those who didn’t attend the 2024 edition of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). For those who waited in line after line to attend the Marvel panel on Saturday, it was probably a fantastic moment. But that’s only 6,000 of the 130,000 who enter the exhibition hall on Saturday. That’s not including the 100,000s outside taking part in offsites, parties, signings, etc. So, while we always enjoy a little bit of Robert Downey Jr. in our lives, this year’s SDCC had a lot more for those who may not have wanted to spend Friday in a line in the hopes of waiting in line on Saturday.

In my prior wrap-ups of SDCC, I made note that the COVID-19 pandemic and writer’s strike seemed to hamper things, whether it was the attendees, the celebrities or everyone. 2024 is by no means perfect, there were plenty of messes left and right, but this was the first time since 2019 that things began to feel normal. Yes, there were people wearing masks, but to each their own when it comes to safety. Yes, there was a strike called by SAG-AFTRA against major video game publishers, but the festivities went on, delighting young and old, geeky, nerdy, dorky, and even the local passerbys of San Diego.

While we didn’t make it to the exhibition floor for Wednesday’s preview night, we did make it to several fantastic offsites. While the swag wasn’t available for the press preview, Adult Swim made it’s triumphant return after a one-year hiatus with a pirate party, featuring games and photo opportunities from shows like “Rick and Morty” and “Smiling Friends.” Adult Swim, as they always do, cranked the fun up to 11 in coming days with live wrestling events, daily DJs and swag that might be too big to fit into your carry-on. We also checked out Paramount+’s Lodge, which showcased some upcoming shows, like “Dexter: Original Sin” and “Tulsa King” while celebrating 25 years of Spongebob. Wait…25 years…geez I’m getting old. While both were fantastic events, especially the free drinks and pizza at the Lodge, the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” activation was a combination of “Apes” history and the magic of modern special effects. Not only did they have a museum of Ape film artifacts, highlighting the rich history that stretches back to 1968, but several actors and crew from the latest film were on hand to talk with fans and press. If you attended, you also could had a few drinks and hors d’oeuvres with them.

The action kept rolling Thursday, although the day began with a bit of a whimper. Focus Features was celebrating 20 years of “Shaun of the Dead” with a Winchester Tavern pop-up. The only problem was, there was no air-conditioning and the free beer couldn’t be consumed on-site. As soon as word spread, it became one of the least frequented offsites of the weekend. Thankfully FX and Hulu’s Animayhem offsite activations were up next and offered some decent swag and reprieve from the heat. Knowing that they’d be under the blaring California sun, FX offered free, customized umbrellas (even if the line was an hour long) before exploring various other portions of their activation. However, FX was a mixed bag as many thought the wait to get into “The Bear” activation wasn’t worth it. Hulu managed to help fans beat the heat by setting up misting fans and overhead awnings to ensure those waiting in line for their activation didn’t leave with a wicked sunburn. The activation featured various activities, food and a collection of pins that fans of “Solar Opposites,” “Futurama” or “Hit Monkey” will treasure forever. While the day could have ended with a load of panels, instead MediaMikes’ first panel of the day hosted by Fandom, ended with us going to Fandom’s 20th anniversary party. You can read more HERE.

With offsites out of the way, Friday and Saturday was loaded with exploring the exhibition hall and attending various panels. The exhibition hall reminds us that while the big players, LEGO, Marvel, and others, take up the most space on the sales floor, fans will always find that small booth, that tiny artist, or that one thing stowed away that will ultimately bring the biggest smile to their face. For me, it was a photo with Lloyd Kaufman. The legendary director/writer/everything gladly talked with those who knew Troma, ensuring everyone who stopped by will remember him as Uncle Lloyd. One stand-out panel from the day was the audiobook preview of “Red Dead History” with Arthur Morgan (voiced by the highly personable Roger Clark) attending the panel and snapping selfies with fans of the 2018 game. While I could continue to gloat about the various panels with their various surprises, it would become a long winded article of me bragging.

What is the big takeaway from this year’s SDCC? Was it perfect? No. Was it amazing despite its flaws? Yes. It usually is. SDCC offers enough unique experiences so that you won’t be bored. Want to check out board games that could one day become the next “Axis and Allies?” SDCC has got you. Want to check out some independent films? SDCC has got you. I say all this because there were rumblings, just like in prior years, that SDCC could go somewhere else. But it’s hard to beat San Diego weather and the Gaslamp district’s amenities. While it’s impossible to do everything, it’s possible to get a life changing experience, no matter who you are or what you enjoy. Scout out those panels, ask those questions when attending, compliment the cosplayers, talk to strangers about the great time or to get some insight on other happenings and most important, put on some sunscreen. As a Midwesterner, where an average summer day feels like Satan breathing down your neck, the mid-to-upper 70s can trick you into thinking you won’t crisp up in a few hours.

We’ve all had that moment in life, you hear about a party that you don’t think you’re cool enough to go to, or you don’t get the invite, or maybe you just hear about it after the fact. Whatever the reason, it has free booze, free food, cool celebrities, a pool, a concert, and it’s all on a rooftop. It’s the kind of party Hollywood glamorizes in various films as a place to rub elbows with greats. Well, at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), for several years now, it’s been Fandom’s annual party. MediaMikes was lucky enough to join the Fandom party for the first time as they celebrated their 20th anniversary.

While one of the most difficult parties to get into at SDCC, the entertainment company still makes it accessible to regular people, whether by invite, social media, or pure chance (like us). That legendary film about the seedy underbelly of minor-league hockey, Slap Shot recently celebrated the 47th anniversary of its release in theaters. 

If you were to bet Vegas online, it’s likely you could’ve got long odds that Hollywood icon Paul Newman, who starred as Reg Dunlop, player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs of the fictional Federal League, would allow that Slap Shot was among his favorite films. In fact, those closest to Newman suggested that he would acknowledge in private that it was his absolute favorite.

While there’s been no new or updated release of Slap Shot to mark the film’s latest milestone, the cult classic is once more being celebrated via the printed word. Author Jonathan Jackson has released a second edition of his successful book The Making Of Slap Shot: Behind the Scenes of the Greatest Hockey Movie Ever made. 

The book was originally published in 2010. The updated second edition, released by Double J Media, includes several never before seen photos of the making of the film contributed by cast members.

Slap Shot Was Art Imitating Life

The beauty of Slap Shot can be found in its gritty reality. Anyone who’s ever rode the buses with a minor pro hockey team knows that this film was a window into their existence. 

Like Jackson, who was a first-time author when he penned the original Making of Slap Shot, Nancy Dowd, who wrote the book Slap Shot as well as the screenplay for the film, was also a first-timer to the industry. The concept for the story came from spending time with her brother Ned Dowd, who was a player with the Johnstown Jets of the North American Hockey League.

Ned would bring a tape recorder with him everywhere he went with the team – on the bus, in the dressing room – then he’d hand the tapes over to Nancy. She’d use those as unofficial transcripts from which the concept for Slap Shot would be born.

“The movie was all true,” explained Jeff Carlson, who portrayed one of the notorious Hanson brothers in Slap Shot. “They got the ideas from us three clowns and from the team. Going into the stands (to fight opposing fans), the mooning scenes, the race cars (on the road trips). That was minor league hockey, but it’s blown out of proportion to add comedy to the movie.”

Hockey Stars Became Movie Stars

Dave Hanson also wrote a book about his Slap Shot experience.

The original plan for the film was to find actors who could skate. An open casting call was held at an ice rink in Hollywood to audition actors. They first had to prove that they could skate.

“Of course, every agent said that their client could skate,” recalled Ned Dowd. Along with playing the role of arch-villain Ogie Ogilthorpe in the film, Dowd was also given the task of technical director for the film. It was his mission to choreograph all of the hockey scenes in Slap Shot. 

“Once we got them on the ice, it was the most frightening thing I’d ever seen. People were falling on ice, they were being cut by skates.”

Among the actors who auditioned were Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte. It was also known that Al Pacino was interested in the starring role as Reg Dunlop. 

“Eventually, we determined that it would be easier to teach hockey players to act than to teach actors how to skate,” Dowd explained. 

They found enough actors with a hockey background to fill some of the major roles. Michael Ontkean, who played college hockey, was scoring star Ned Braden. Jerry Houser (Killer Carlson) and Allan Nichols (Johnny Upton) were capable skaters. 

For Yvon Barrette, the scene-stealing goalie Denis Lemieux, they used Ron Docken, the real goalie for the Jets, to film his hockey scenes. Once Barrette pulled down his mask, director George Roy Hill would yell cut and Docken would take over. In the film, Docken plays Lebrun, the backup goalie. 

Beyond Jeff and Steve Carlson and Dave Hanson, who portrayed the Hanson brothers, other Jets players also filled roles. Guido Tenesi was Billy Charlebois. Jean-Rosario Tetreault was Bergeron. As well, various pro hockey players including Blake Ball, John Gofton, Connie Madigan and even former NHL coach Bruce Boudreau played parts as opposing players.

“When I point myself out in the movie, my kids don’t believe it’s me because I’ve got hair,” the current follicly-challenged Boudreau said.

Even Newman learned to skate and performed most of his scenes, although on occasion, minor-league star Rod Bloomfield would enter as his stunt double.

Why Paul Newman Loved Slap Shot

Newman and Hill had previously worked together on The Sting and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. That was one reason why he was intrigued by the role in Slap Shot. 

Mostly, though, it was because he got the opportunity to play an every man, a role in which Newman thrived as both an actor and a human being.

Dave Hanson remembers their first meeting with the Hollywood legend. 

“It was a Sunday afternoon, the day before shooting was to begin,” Hanson recalled. “There was a knock on our door and it was Paul Newman. There was an IndyCar race on TV and he asked if he could come in and watch it.”

Jackson believes this is why Newman was so enthralled with the outcome of Slap Shot.

“Paul believed that Reggie was closer to his real self than any other character he had ever played,” Jackson explained to backyard-hockey.com. “He enjoyed being a regular person as often as he could and, with this film, he got to do exactly that. 

“He got to hang out in Johnstown, PA, play hockey, drink beer, joke around and just be one of the guys. He never had more fun making a movie.”

There was a bond between the hockey players and the Oscar-winning actor. Newman taught them how to play scenes. They taught him how to play hockey.

“He was so into helping Jeff, Dave and myself,” Steve Carlson, who portrayed Steve Hanson, told the Hockey News of Newman. “We weren’t actors, although we had been acting all our lives. Paul would give us tips and we would tell him what a real hockey player would do. 

“He pulled off a cult classic.”

It is 110 miles to swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. There have only been three people on record to successfully complete the journey through the treacherous shark and jellyfish filled waters, the latest being Diana Nyad. Starring Annette Bening as Nyad, the 2023 film details the American swimmer’s multiple attempts at accomplishing the amazing feat.

From 2010 to 2013, Nyad made five different attempts to complete her mission, failing on the first four for a variety of reasons, most due to Mother Nature. At the age of 64, Nyad and her team completed the journey without the assistance of a shark cage. Battling both physical and mental hurdles, Nyad’s tale of grit and resiliency proves that age is nothing but a number and that you are never too old to chase your dreams.
