10 Best Custom Lightsaber Brands: Why NEO Sabers Leads the Pack

Custom lightsabers used to be very simple. One consisted of a hilt with a blade of some sort and maybe a sound chip for extra fun. Now there are a dozen different companies all telling you how great they are and how they are the best in the galaxy. But half of them give you broken sabers that make a nice sound after about two fights.

I have tested and reviewed multiple different lightsaber builds to bring you information on which companies are actually worth buying from and not worth your time and money. I have placed NEO Sabers at the top of my review, and by the end of the article, you will see why. You will also learn what went wrong with the other builds and what was right with them. So let’s get started.

NEO Sabers

I put NEO Sabers on the top of the list because after looking through the rest of the offers, I haven’t found anything close to this product in terms of quality. NEO Sabers’ blades are the most diverse among the rivals on the list. This means that the variety also extends to the technical specifications. Using the Neopixel technology in most of their sabers allows them to provide the most pleasing color transitions and high-end visual effects.
My own experience with other brands that have similar technology on their blades has shown that the effect is severely compromised at higher power levels. In NEO Sabers, the colors never fall apart. The hilt part has been improved compared to lower-tier products. The metal parts give the necessary weight, and the overall weight distribution is close to the duel-wielding category, so there is less strain on the leading hand. I tested the sturdiness by dropping the saber on a concrete road, and after doing so, I only saw scratches on the emitter ring.
As for pricing, it is right between high and low. It means one must understand what they spend their money on. One pays for the technology and the overall feel of the saber rather than the brand name. Compared to others who use higher price points to justify mediocre hilt technology, NEO Sabers pricing is almost an obvious choice.
The most important strength is customer support. Which I would say is better in nearly every category. I contacted the company with a question regarding the soundfont changes. The customer support replied the next day with a detailed answer instead of giving me a standard response. This attention to detail is seen in other sections, such as in the user forums dedicated to the brand.
Finally, customization is an option that is seen in other brands. But it is executed so much better in NEO Sabers that one prefers it over other options. One does not have to choose from three pre-set bundles but instead designs the saber according to one’s preferences. Lightsaber Blade color , sound font, crystal chamber, handle grip material, and much more. This is the bar. Every brand after this gets measured against it, and most come up short somewhere.

UltraSabers

UltraSabers established itself early on. The brand’s reputation is still appealing to less experienced customers who don’t know any better. The company’s offers are satisfactory. Even the entry-level lightsabers feature good build quality and decent audio for the price category. What hurts the value proposition of UltraSabers is the significant jump in price when choosing between electronic packages.
Adding Neopixel versions of blades, modified soundboards, or upgraded crystal chamber options makes one realize that a budget-friendly saber with a standard configuration is actually closer to the top-end NEO Sabers in terms of cost. When I checked the price of a similar saber in NEO Sabers, it turned out that UltraSabers would have been pricier whenever an electronic package was included.
The other concern that buyers often mention is shipping, which can be especially disappointing around the holiday season and during peak movie release periods. During these times, the shipping process can take more than a month. This is with little information provided to the customer about the status of their order. When someone is waiting for a gift and a con, such a long shipping period is unsatisfactory. The brand itself is not bad, but compared to the price, it seems to be below average. While the quality is right in the middle.

SaberForge

SaberForge definitely went premium with their saber hilts. It shows. The quality construction, weight, and general look of the finished product are right up there with something one would expect to see for display in a museum. This is a definite plus if you were to get it for the hilt and only use it for dueling as a secondary.
This is also where you start to notice the price. It’s not exactly cheap, but you’ll be surprised at how quickly the number goes up. A basic hilt is almost as expensive as a NeoPixel saber from NEO Sabers with all of the electronics included. If you go with a more high-end soundboard or get a custom blade, it will put you at a price that would make most amateur-level collectors and some intermediate saber collectors think twice.
Customization is rather limited outside of the top class. Dropping lower, you see a reduced selection of colors, sounds, and grip textures with each tier. There are far fewer options that offer a decent level of flexibility. It’s a noticeable value drop for those looking to spend less on their saber, but not by much.
Less variety and flexibility across the lower classes make it a good option for those with a bigger budget looking to show off their saber somewhere in a display case. A mediocre pick for those looking to max out their customization without paying the price.

Vader’s Vault

Vader’s Vault made its name on modularity and accuracy to the characters’ designs. It delivers on those promises. If you want a hilt that has every button in the precise place as depicted on screen, you can’t go wrong with these guys.
However, their electronics are on the lower end of the spectrum. Their soundboards are a generation behind what companies like NEO Sabers put out as stock. It results in less variety of sound fonts, clash detection that triggers half a beat late, and blades that don’t ignite with the crispness of a modern Neopixel saber. It’s far from unusable, but it’s immediately apparent when you hold a saber with their electronics next to one with more up-to-date components.
Support is the bigger con based on what the customer is saying. The response time for a basic order inquiry or problem can be up to a week. It can be even longer waits in the time around releases, when orders are coming in by the hundreds. You have to be careful not to ask much more than the barest of questions. If you want a timely answer, because my tester asked a general question about parts on an order and it took four days to get a vague response, then you should ask a more specific question.
Nice if blade tech isn’t a concern and you value replicas over modern electronics. Not so nice if you want good customer support and cutting-edge technology in your blades.

Imperial Workshop

Imperial Workshop has some positives with the price. Their low-end sabers are cheaper than most of the competition on our list here. It makes them attractive to people who want to get their foot in the door before investing in something serious.
That’s reflected in the materials, however; they’re noticeably lighter than they should be in places and not in a good way. I managed to get one of these to go through several sparring matches in testing before noticing that the grip area was already showing signs of wear. NEO Sabers, in contrast, only showed such signs after a similar number of duels. Screws came loose, and the emitter ring showed some play after only a couple weeks’ use.
For a display piece or a first saber that you don’t mind tossing around, it’s forgivable. But if you’re planning to do a lot of dueling or if you intend to use it for cosplay and other events where it will get abused, it’s not durable enough for long-term usage. Great budget starter saber. Not for people planning on putting in a lot of time into it.

Crimson Dawn

Crimson Dawn maintains moderately priced items most of the time. You can say that they are priced similarly to the Imperial Workshop, but without the mentioned durability issues. This makes them attractive in terms of value for the money spent.
The selection in Crimson Dawn is another point of concern. With the exception of the default blade colors and a couple of sound fonts, there is almost nothing to choose from. If you know what you want to buy, you can get it at a fair price. However, if you want to buy something unusual, you will be disappointed by the absence of alternative options. I could not find anything close to the crystal chamber I saw in the video. While NEO Sabers has about twelve different designs. The soundfonts have a similar issue, as only a few useful options remain after the default one.
That slim catalog is great for people who w’ant an easy saber. They don’t really care how it’s put together, but it’s bad for anyone who wants their saber to be more than one of three pre-built options out of a catalog. Reasonable price, minimal variety. Simple and convenient, but a pain for those who want to build something unique.

Darkwolf Sabers

Darkwolf made a name for itself in electronics. Their product demonstrates that in spades. They have excellent soundboard options, responsive clash detection, and a good variety of sound fonts for those who want to focus on performance.
That’s not to say the other options are bad, but the hilt is mostly bland. They have few interesting variations in grip options or additional details. I found myself comparing it to the NEO Saber’s hilt in the same price class. And the difference in the quality of the designs was immediately apparent. If you want something that looks good mounted on your wall, the Darkwolf is the one to choose. But if you want something that looks like serious engineers built it, then the NEO Sabers will be the clear winner.
For somebody who does not care about the aesthetics of a saber and only focuses on the quality of sound and blade, this deal is probably not an issue. However, for those who wish to put their creation on display or stage photoshoots for the local cosplay community, Darkwolf leaves much to be desired in comparison to other producers. Essentially, the saber is built around a single strong point while all others are severely underdeveloped. It makes it a mediocre choice for the majority of enthusiasts seeking to create a proper cosplay prop.

Korbanth

Korbanth has established itself as a reputable manufacturer that makes screen-accurate replicas. The company has an excellent reputation among many serious collectors for its ability to create specific reproductions at a high level. This implies that each weapon is made so that it is as close to the original as possible, even if the customer does not ask for it. Even if there is no apparent reason for it.
However, this also means that this company is not the best choice if one needs an entirely accurate weapon. For example, someone who wants a saber that is suited more for a duel than for the light slashing motions seen in the movies might find that Korbanth’s website will not have such an option. The same goes for people who want hybrid versions of different sabers, which are not available as options in the catalog.
Great if you’re looking for a specific prop for a display shelf or a collection. Not so great if you want a saber that can actually be used. A saber that you can modify to be something different than what it is.

Sabertrio

Sabertrio’s offer is good. The variety of designs is significantly better than what Crimson Dawn provides and comparable to what Imperial Workshop sells for a similar price. This makes Sabertrio a weapon of choice in the middle of the market.
However, a closer look at the reviews suggests that the quality of goods may be lower than expected. Multiple buyers reported that their orders had issues. They got unevenly painted hilts, badly aligned seams, and even blades that had to be forced out of the hilts. This is a significant problem for any company selling lightsabers. The fact that the issue was reported several times across different product lines suggests that it is not an outlier.
Variety without consistency isn’t much of a product. It could be a good unit. It could be bad. It’s not the risk NEO Sabers purchasers should have to live with. It certainly isn’t the risk you should have to endure. It’s a risk, nothing more than that.

The Pach Store

The Pach Store is convenient in terms of pricing since it starts at a low level. The website is user-friendly, and it satisfies customers who want to purchase a cheap saber without any effort. However, the low price is the only advantage of the online store.
It has several disadvantages that are typical for cheap lightsabers. Such as weak blade life, plastic parts that cannot imitate the flexible metallic ones, a thin soundboard that muffles the sound, and a short range compared to the real saber. I personally experienced those shortcomings by trying one of the sabers. Its blade connector was loose, and I could not rely on its quality to participate in any duel. I would be afraid it would break within several minutes.
However, if I wanted to buy it for short-term use, it would be suitable for me because I would not plan to use it for a long time. In addition, the budget saber would be appropriate for movie-making or as a toy for those who are not going to use the equipment for multiple occasions.
