Interview wtih Papa Joe Aviance

Papa Joe Aviance is a dance music performer best known for performance with Lulu on the track “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”. His current song is working its way up Billboard Dance charts. Media Mikes had a chance recently to speak with Papa Joe about his music and future plans.

Adam Lawton: What made you first want to get into music?
Papa Joe Aviance: I have been passionate about music all of my life. I grew up playing the violin and I was also in the marching band. Music is something I have been around all of my life. When I first experienced club music it was like church for me. Feeling the grooves and beats was very magical and I fell in love with it. Music in general is something that I just really love!

AL: How was it getting to work with Lulu on “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”?
PJA: Amazing! I had danced to her tracks many times in the clubs and to have the opportunity to work with her was a blessing in disguise. My demo had been sent to Kult records and that day was the same day the originally rapper on the track was fired. They liked my voice and if would mind doing the rap on the track. Next thing I know its number 6 on the Billboard dance charts.

AL: When you were working on the track did you think it was going to be as big as it turned out?
PJA: Not at all. When it did get as big as it did I saw myself on the video and I knew I had to change my appearance. I knew I just couldn’t look like I did. I remember going to a local sports bar and hearing that song on the juke box. I just couldn’t believe it. From there I really got the motivation to lose a bunch of weight and was the next big thing to happen to me after that song was released.

AL: Can you tell us about your new track titled “Live For Life”?
PJA: I had Willy Sanjuan at a music conference about a year and a half ago. I was there promoting “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”. He and I had been communicating through email and through the process of my weight loss I started writing this track. We recorded and submitted it and now it’s being promoted everywhere. I am really happy and proud of the track. This really is my very first solo track.

AL: How was it going into the studio by yourself for the first time?
PJA: It was fun and exciting. I love being in the studio and getting to brainstorm material. This new track is kind of about being passionate and doing what you love.

AL: Can you tell us about Papa Joe Network Productions?
PJA: That sort of came into play about 2 years ago. I had helped with some things on the “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life” video. During my weight loss journey I decided to document it. From there I started working on other projects besides my own. I like trying to help people get their message out.

AL: Do you have any other upcoming projects?
PJA: I am currently working with a few charities right now filming their events. Besides filming for those groups I am also involved heavily as a member. Next year I am planning to do a Walk Across America tour. I am planning to visit 10-15 cities to promote not only my new song but a healthy and active lifestyle. I plan to document the whole thing and submit it to festivals when it’s all done.

Interview wtih Amanda Detmer

Amanda Detmer is playing Bridget in new comedy TV series “Man Up!”. This show is easily one of the funniest new shows on TV this Fall. Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Amanda about her role in the show and what we can expect from season one.

Mike Gencarelli: What do you like most about playing the role of Bridget in “Man Up!”?
Amanda Detmer: Bridget is funny and quick witted. Dan Fogler, who plays my ex-husband on the show, has a very similar sense of humor as me. When you see us on the show you can totally see why they were married but at the same time you can see why they got divorced. Henry Simmons is the most serene person I have ever been around. I think he is going to win an Emmy. Every time he finishes a scene I am always laughing and he asks me why and I tell him “Because you’re so frickin funny!” Terry Polo is really great to work with and I am looking forward to our first fight on the show [laughs].

MG: You start to see some relationship drama between Kenny and Grant. Can we expect more of that throughout the season?
AD: It takes some twists and turns for sure! At first the guys aren’t really sure what to think of Grant. He ends up being so endearing that as the season progresses you see the other guys try to get Kenny to see that Grant is not that bad. It’s total man drama! [laughs]. It’s man love gone awry.

MG: What’s it like being one of the female co-stars in a man led show?
AD: You just wait! The women will rise. The guys think it’s always about them but I am just waiting for them to realize that’s totally not the case [laughs].

MG: Will the guys getting in trouble be a common theme throughout the season?
AD: There are many situations that the guys get themselves into it. This group of actors have all done other work and had some success are still coming into the project as people you haven’t met yet in a way. Each character is so distinct and different. Chris and the team of writers are so great! They really write for the characters rather than just writing something that as actors and actresses have to make work. It’s so fun which is what it’s supposed to be.

MG: Have you had a favorite moment from shooting yet?
AD: There was a scenario that didn’t get cleared by the network where Chris Moynihan is singing to a group of women. He wrote a certain song so he could get a reaction from them. The song spelled out vagina and I was like what are you doing singing a song like that! I didn’t know that he was going to sing to this group of lesbians. (Laughs) I just lost it. There was also a great scene with my character and Kenny where you see just a glimpse of them getting along.

MG: How do you feel this show stands out from other comedies on television right now?
AD: I think we are people who get to be introduced as our characters as opposed to being known from a previous role. I think it’s hard sometimes for people to see an actor or actress outside of previously popular role and who are now playing a different role. We are sort of being introduced and we haven’t really been known to well as anyone else. The show is genuinely funny and you just can’t help but laugh. I love that I get a bird’s eye into the guy’s world.

Interview wtih Eamon Pirruccello

Eamon Pirruccello is going to be lending his voice to the 2011 reboot of “Thundercats”, which airs on Cartoon Network on July 29, 2011. Eamon is voicing the character of WilyKat in the new series. Movie Mikes had a chance to briefly ask Eamon about his experience working on the new “Thundercats” series in his very first interview.

Mike Gencarelli: Are you excited to be playing WilyKat in the reboot of “Thundercats”?
Eamon Pirruccello: Heck Yeah! The shows have been really fun to record and the people I’ve met have been really fun!

MG: How did you prepare for the role? Did you watch any of the original “Thundercats” series to get inspiration?
EP: I prepared for it by getting focused before recording a line. I actually haven’t seen the original show. I probably will now that I have seen how awesome the new one is.

MG: How many episodes have you recorded so far?
EP: I don’t know actually, because I have not kept count. I heard that the seasons are 26 episodes though.

MG: When you are recording the voice what visuals do you have? Storyboards? Full episodes?
EP: Normally none but sometimes we record ADR after the rest of the episode, at which point we are all recording to picture.

MG: How did you become involved with the short “Kung Fu Panda Secrets of the Furious Five”?
EP: It started like any other job: With an audition. When I got the job, I was really excited that I would be a part of something like Kung-Fu Panda (Which now has two great movies and a short.)
