Seiko 5 Sports: A Short Review

If you’re a watch connoisseur, you’ve heard of the 5 Sports line from Seiko. Not unless you’re a hardcore Swiss watchmaker fan and dismiss anything that’s not Swiss-made when it comes to watches. The 5 Sports line from Japanese brand Seiko is becoming more and more popular with the younger crowd, but is it worth the buy?

The Watch Overall

Seiko, for the uninitiated, is the brand that introduced quartz technology to the world with their Seiko Astron watch. As a brand, Seiko has been at the forefront of Japanese watchmaking for years, and there is no doubt that the brand has churned out some great timepieces since its conception.

Last year, Seiko, arguably one of the world’s top watch brands,  relaunched its widely popular 5 Sports line. This line is famous the world over for being the only automatic watch with all the bells and whistles of high-end watches without their astronomical prices. In its latest iteration, the newly-minted 27 models under the line still dazzle and probably is still your best bet for a starter mechanical watch.

Seiko repositioned the line alongside the launch as well. Under the collection are five (symbolic, eh?) collections: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street, and Sense. Stainless steel is the star of the show with all of the watches under the line having it as their main case material, with some models having color coatings in rose gold, black, etc.

Still A Great Mechanical Watch

Though differing in prices, any of 27 models are as good as any mechanical watch out there. Seiko really doubled down on presentation this year, and it shows especially in the Suits line. The watches are unapologetically elegant, giving off expensive luxury watch vibes that are reminiscent of top luxury watches.

If you’re looking to get a great mechanical watch that’s under $500, look no further than the Seiko 5 Sports. The 5 in the watch’s branding contains the philosophy of how it’s made – the watch should have an automatic movement, water-resistance, day-date feature, crown clock, and a quality case (stainless, in this case). The new 5 Sports line still has all of these features, of course, but now done better.

The Movement

All of the 5 Sports watches carry the new Seiko 4R36, an in-house mechanical movement with hand-winding capabilities. The power reserve is clocked at a meager 41 hours, but that also means you can rest the watch for more than one day, and you’re still golden.

Go Beyond The Norm With Sports

The Sports style holds the biggest number of watches under its collection. There are stunning pieces to choose from in here – the one in blacked-out steel strap is particularly a looker. The classic blue and red Pepsi crown are still in the running, but if you’re looking for something truly unique, the one in orange dial should be your thing.

Another truly great alternative is the classic black dial and silver clasp combo, but if you want a nylon strap to go along with your watch, the black or green option should fulfill that fancy. In the Suits style, you’ll find scrumptious options – honestly, any of the offerings here can go toe-to-toe with Swiss-made brands like Tudor or Blancpain, but for the sake of a safe bet, go for the black dial, black strap, silver case option.

The Specialist line has a Prospex feel to it, opting for leather bands instead of steel clasps. If you’re one for a truly subtle yet bombastic piece, the case with a rose gold coating is as trendy as any 2019 watch can be. Get any from the Street style if you want a blacked-out dial with red hands. Lastly, the Sense style carries Eco-drive like qualities from Citizen. Get one for hiking and adventures.

Takeaway

The new Seiko 5 Sports watches are in one word, refreshing. Although it’s been a controversial collection for its sheer pricing, the company still stuck to their guns and came out with quality mechanical watches that enthusiasts and the general public can enjoy.
