Wonder Crew Buddies Break Gender Stereotypes

 February 18, 2017, — BELOIT, Wis. – During Toy Fair in New York, PlayMonster LLC is showcasing its new Wonder Crew® Buddies, the toy line for boys designed to empower boys to connect, nurture and build empathy through friendship, imagination and adventure.

Wonder Crew is turning the table on the conversation about gender stereotypes and toys, which has largely been focused on presenting more options for girls to play. Wonder Crew fills a hole in the market by offering a toy that helps boys develop their emotional maturity, including compassion and kindness, to help them grow to be good men, husbands, fathers and more.

Combining the adventure of an action figure with the emotional connection of a stuffed animal, 15″ Wonder Crew Buddies are available now. The crew includes Will (Caucasian), Marco (Hispanic), James (African American) and Erik (Asian). Each comes dressed in superhero gear, complete with matching mask and cape for kids.

Wonder Crew also has three Adventure Packs: Builder includes a construction outfit and hard hat for the buddy, and a matching vest for kids; Explorer features a safari-looking outfit and hat for the buddy, and a matching hat for the child; and Snuggler is a set of pajamas for the buddy, and a blanket for kids!  Each is sold separately.

Bringing “adventure through friendship” to boys ages 3‒5, Wonder Crew buddies are priced at $29.99‒$34.99; gear sets from $14.99‒$19.99.

Wonder Crew was created by Laurel Wider, a psychotherapist and mom, after her son came home from preschool one day and announced that “boys aren’t supposed to cry.”  Frustrated by many of the messages boys were (and weren’t) receiving and inspired by the way play influences child development, Wider created Wonder Crew to encourage kids to connect emotionally and be their full selves.

I have been a fan of these talking puppies since the Buddies Series starts back with “Air Buddies”.  Since then there has been five other films including “Snow Buddies”, “Space Buddies”, “Santa Buddies: the Legend of Santa Paws”, “Spooky Buddies” and “Treasure Buddies”. Sure they are cheesy but they are just great family fun.  And most importantly my daughter loves them.  “Super Buddies” is a family friendly send-up of “The Avengers” and other superhero films. It features our favorite pups including Rosebud, B-Dawg, Budderball, Buddha and Mudbud as they become caped crusaders and embark on their biggest adventure ever. Filled with great jokes, action and some great new characters, “Super Buddies” is super family fun.

The “Buddies” voices include Cooper Roth (“Are you Faster Than a 1st Grader), who voices B-Dawg; Tenzing Trainor (“Stevie TV” ) who voices Buddha; Jeremy Shinder (“Louie,” “Newlyweeds”) who voices Budderball; Ty Panitz (“Because I Said So,” “How To Eat Fried Worms”) who voices Mudbud; and G. Hannelius (“Good Luck Charlie”, “Sonny With A Chance”) who voices Rosebud. So there is no shortage of great talent here!

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment delivers this film as a 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy). Disney has recently crossed over into the world of digital streaming, which is fantastic news.  I know my daughter is going to re-watch this release over and over on the iPad.  The 1080p transfer works with the action and visual effects and the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track also is very impressive and delivers a mainstream feel despite this direct-to-DVD release. These films are well made, like I said cheesy but still pretty sharp.  The downfall here is that there are no additional special features for the kiddies.  I could have seen some fun extras included for the kids included. Can’t see what is in store next for the “Buddies”!

Blu-ray Review “Chesty Morgan’s Bosom Buddies”

Ok so if you are asking yourself, why we are reviewing this Blu-ray, my answer will be…have you see the cover image? Plus the Blu-ray has a tagline of “To See Them is to Disbelieve Them!”. Of course that is referring to Chesty Morgan’s 73-inch (real) breasts. This release comes with not one bur three Something Weird Films for the first time on Blu-ray. I mean if you going to watch 73-inch breasts they need to be in HD right? If you come in with expectations low and looking to get some great laughs this release is a fun romp and a great conversation piece if nothing else.

This film included the follow films: “Deadly Weapons”, which features Chesty Morgan (credited as just Zsa Zsa) attacks the mob with well…her 73-inch breasts! Chesty then returns as “Double Agent 73”, get the pun?, who busts up a drug ring with the aid of a camera implanted in one of her breasts. But the camera is also a time bomb making her boob… well, booby trapped! Lastly “The Immoral Three” follows the three daughters of the spy mom who must avenge her death in order to collect a three-million-dollar inheritance. No Chesty Morgan in this one unfortunately.

The Blu-ray presentation is great, especially for films show in the early 70’s. The 1080p transfer is mostly clear and sharp, besides the terrible focusing issues these films have. The audio includes a DTS HD Master Audio Stereo track, which plays well with the badly dubbed voices. There are also a few short but decent special features. Doris Wishman is the cult director of all three films included here and this comes with a “Doris Wishman Trailer Show” showcasing her cult classics. Lastly there is a Gallery of Doris Wishman Exploitation Art. Worth checking out if you enjoy these films.

This series is a spin-off of the “Air Bud” franchise and this is actually the sixth installment in the “Air Buddies” series. Honestly I have enjoyed the “Buddies” films especially the holiday themed ones. This one is packed with great comedy, action and even special effects. The CG effects used in the film are really great included fire breathing snakes, sand storms and vicious sphinx cats.  It is “Indiana Jones” for kids…and with dogs. Parents grab your kids and plan to actually enjoy this film, since  they obviously are going to love it.

In this action-packed sequel, the buddies set off Egypt this time for this amazing adventure. They are on a mission to find a legendary treasure called  the Cat’s Eye jewel which is from the lost treasure of Cleocatra! The buddies face a devious cat who plans to possess the mystical jewel to get rid of all dogs! With help from their new friend Cammy, a baby camel and a monkey named Babi they buddies needs to race time and save the day.

The special features are a little light but decent especially since this is a kids movie. Could have been cool to have some interactive games included for the kiddies. The first feature is called “DIGS: B-Dawg Edition” and has B-Dawg giving a tour of his home, cute for kids. Lastly there is a music video for the song “Roam”, it is a remake of The B-52s song performed by Caroline Sunshine, Kenton Duty and Adam Irigoyen from the cast of the Disney Channel hit series “Shake it Up.” Overall fun features to a fun film.
