Theatre Review “Back to the Future: The Musical” The Straz Center, Tampa FL

Bank of America Broadway at The Straz
APR 29 – MAY 4, 2025

Great Scott! BACK TO THE FUTURE, the beloved, the Broadway musical, which premiered back in 2021 at the West End in London has its destination set for Tampa in this month. I had the pleasure of seeing this musical in London back in 2022 and 2023 and also on opening date on Broadway in 2024. I would have to say that it is one of my favorite musicals in the past few years. Still regardless having seen this show three times previously, The Straz Center delivered the goods for this touring production. The sets were fantastic, the sound was perfect and the acting was on par with previous stage adaptations. And most important the car flies (sort of)! This was an amazing experience and I highly recommend getting tickets while you still can to catch this amazing show at the Straz Center in Tampa, FL.

Winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical, and the Broadway World Award for Best New Musical, BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE MUSICAL is adapted for the stage by the iconic film’s creators Bob Gale (Back to the Future trilogy) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) and directed by the Tony Award®-winner John Rando with original music by multi-Grammy® winners Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Endgame) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”), alongside hit songs from the movie including “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel” and “Back in Time.”

Having seen BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE MUSICAL previously with original cast Olly Dobson, who played Marty McFly and Roger Bart, who perfectly became Doc Brown it was setting the bar high for Tampa, FL. Lucas Hallauer, who plays Marty honestly did a fantastic job. Haven seen the show three times with three different Martys, he fit right up there with the best of them. Don Stephenson, who plays Doc also delivered the good. My favorite is still Roger Bart but the guy originated the role so its hard to beat the best. Don did a solid job and hit all the right notes. Notable performances were Cartreze Tucker, who plays Goldie Wilson and Marvin Berry, he sang his heart out and delivered a fun performance. Also I thought that Ethan Rogers was a really solid Biff Tannen. He has the looks and the chops to go along with the role. Honestly highly recommend this touring cast overall.

After seeing this show in London and New York, I was a bit concerned about how they would do a few of the shows key moments and depict the sets. Well let me tell you we were blown away but the sets. They did an amazing job replicating taking you back to Hill Valley. And if you have seen the show you are probably wondering if the car flies…and it does in Tampa, FL. Not fully like in London and New York but it does what it can for a touring production and honestly let the audience in awe and us quite impressed with how things were handled. So I say, get out to Tampa, FL for this run of BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE MUSICAL before time runs out because you don’t want to miss this show!!

Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor ThingsIt Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; OzarkInventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; HullraisersComa).

As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.

What is TRASH’s REVENGE all about

As the saga continues decades after the horrific events of the 1985 cult classic, Trash the notorious punk rocker, played by Linnea Quigley, finds herself trapped in a past where fame has faded. Once a rebellious icon, Trash now embraces the persona of a grotesque Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard, attending conventions to sign autographs while her co-stars rise to greater heights.

For Linnea, her legacy as a star of Return of the Living Dead becomes both a curse and a twisted ticket to notoriety in an industry obsessed with horror and scandal. But when a young filmmaker approaches her to make a documentary with staged re-enactments from the original film to celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary, Linnea sees an opportunity to reclaim her place in the spotlight no matter the cost.

As the documentary delves into her past, a shocking truth emerges: Return of the Living Dead wasn’t just fiction, part of it was real. Linnea confesses that she still possesses three original cannisters from the film, hidden away in her basement. Cannisters that were never revealed to the public… until now.

EXCLUSIVE First Look Trailer: “RIP (Recovery in Progress)” from Ryan Kruger, director of FRIED BARRY

8 years in the making, RIP (Recovery in Progress) is an experimental short film collection. To date, the shorts have screened at selected genre film festivals around the world and have picked up numerous awards. With the exception of Fried Barry, none of these have been released online as the intention was always to release them as an impactful collection.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE (Ryan Kruger) I had found myself at a point in my career, where I was frustrated with purely investing my time and energy in music videos alone. I had full creative control with each video’s narrative and how they were shot. However, I was still restricted by music genre and content. I felt that I couldn’t push the boundaries or my visual style. This was of course all before Fried Barry. These creative restrictions built up feelings of depression and deep frustration at the lack of artistic expression that I was confined to. So I decided, I would work towards completing a number of experimental films that allowed me to truly express myself and fulfill my creative needs. This led to a 8 year project that I am proud to present to the world and looking back I am grateful for the hard times, as this collection of short films was the creative seed that led to the birth of my feature film, Fried Barry.

EXPERIMENTAL FILMMAKING Personally, experimental filmmaking is a unique and powerful art form that allows us to be artists in the truest sense. The word “experimental” is all about trying something new and different…so different that, at first, it can cause confusion, or make the viewer feel uncomfortable. Some films revel in disorder or chaos, ideas colliding without enforced structure, others are milder and convey surreal imagery and/or visual metaphors. Many of these films are intended to be shocking and horrific, but all are open to a multitude of interpretations. Experimental filmmaking is a world of its own, and it’s one that is often overlooked by the majority of filmmakers these days.
