Opening the Fall season for The Hanover Theatre Rep is William Shakespeare’s classic- ROMEO & JULIET for a 3 week run. In the intimate Brickbox venue with its stadium style seating the audience is drawn into the action of the doomed lovers and feuding families. Written more than 400 years ago this show is always an audience favorite and as presented here with mostly professional Actors Equity Union cast attention to details in the production is amazing.
With the auditorium’s floor stage, the drama happens on various level set pieces to bring a bustling Verona into play almost as another character. The opening night had a few lighting scene-change glitches that will most likely improve after more performances.
The color-blind casting works well with strong performances from supporting characters, especially Benvolio (Joshua Olumide), Tybalt (Christoper Martel) and Mercutio (Jade Ziane). The sword fighting choreography is amazingly scary with the violence of the first act. Often the dialog seemed rushed mostly in boisterous scenes but the entire company seemed to be concentrating on getting the poetry/prose of Shakespeare right if not always powerfully.
Seating for this production is unreserved, but in the Brickbox there doesn’t appear to be any seat in the house that would not allow perfect viewing of the terrific staging.
