Film Review “The Black Demon”

Got to be honest, when it comes to sharks, I am a sucker. I watch all types of films shark films and trust me I have seen some crappy films over the years. “The Black Demon” suffers from a weak plot but features a solid CGI megalodon shark, it’s definitely no “The Meg” but you can tell they spent all their money on two things…Josh Lucas and the shark. After watching this trailer, which I felt gives too much away, I was hoping this was going to be one badass film but I was left wanting more.

THE BLACK DEMON stars Josh Lucas (“Yellowstone”), Fernanda Urrejola (Cry Macho) and Julio Cesar Cedillo (Sicario). The film was directed by Adrian Grünberg (Rambo: Last Blood) and written by Boise Esquerra (“Blackwater”) from a story by Carlos Cisco (“Star Trek: Discovery”). The director definitely knows how to bring the action to this film but I just wish that it packed a better story.

Official Premise: Oilman Paul Sturges’ (Lucas) idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory. Stranded and under constant attack, Paul and his family must somehow find a way to get his family back to shore alive before it strikes again in this epic battle between humans and nature.

Based on the Mexican legend, THE BLACK DEMON never gets a chance to really give the shark any meaning. It spends far too much time on land and when the shark does appear its brief and at underwhelming moments. I was hoping for more mythology of where the shark came from and why he was only stalking this oil rig but the pay off was simply disappointing. I have had more fun with cheesy SyFy shark movies over this one.

STRANGER SINGS!, THE PARODY MUSICAL extends through Aug. 13 …New music video celebrating #JusticeForBarb released

(NEW YORK) – You can’t keep a good show (in The Upside) Down! Once again extended, by popular demand, Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical will now run through August 13 at Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s (308 W. 46th Street). To purchase tickets or for further information, visit StrangerSings.com.

In celebration of the newly announced extension, Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical has released an exclusive look into the hit show. Captured in 4K video, live on stage during a recent performance at Playhouse 46, fans can now view SLee as Barb performing her showstopping 11 o’clock number, “Barb’s Turn.” SLee’s performance is both a fan and critic’s favorite. Forbes raved “SLee as Barb is one of the standout performances. Barb, following the particularly robust ‘Barb’s Turn,’ becomes the true audience favorite.” The New Yorker writes “the frumpy best friend role [is] hammed to perfection by SLee, as the dutiful turned divalicious Barb.”

Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical is the hit Off-Broadway musical that brings everyone’s favorite streaming series to hilariously-twisted life on stage. With book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Hogue, Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical is a wild and irreverent send-up of the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things” and all its campy ’80s glory. Take a trip back to Hawkins, Indiana, 1983: when times were simpler, hair was bigger, and unsupervised children were getting snatched by inter-dimensional creatures. Join Mike, Eleven, Lucas, Dustin, and the whole Hawkins gang for a night of adventure, thrills, pubescent angst, heavy synth, poor parenting, convoluted love triangles, cheap effects, dancing monsters, and maybe, just maybe… justice for everyone’s favorite missing ginger, Barb Holland.

“Stranger Things are indeed happening at Playhouse 46,” say Stranger Sings! creator Jonathan Hogue and director Nick Flatto. “After an overwhelming response from our fans, we extended our initial 16-week engagement through the winter. We extended again through the spring. Audiences continue to come back for more, so now, the residents of Hawkins, Indiana have decided, once again, to keep the portal open, this time until August 13! We could not be more excited to have #JusticeForBarb into the summertime and we are stoked to celebrate with the release of “Barb’s Turn,” one of the many hysterical moments the cast brings eight shows a week. We hope that fans will enjoy SLee’s belt-astic performance, and those who have yet to visit our special show will enjoy this glimpse into Stranger Sings! and then come to Playhouse 46 to experience that magic in person.”

Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical currently features Jamir Brown as Lucas, Nickolaus Colon as Hopper, Jeremiah Garcia as Dustin, Caroline Huerta as Joyce/Will, Nicolas Hermick as Mike, Kyle Mangold as Steve/Jonathan, Harley Seger as Eleven / Nancy, SLee as Barb, and swings Jean Christian Barry, Dashiell Gregory and Hannah Clarke Levine.

The creative team includes direction by Nick Flatto, choreography by Ashley Marinelli, musical supervision, arrangements & orchestrations by Michael Kaish, a scenic design by Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominee Walt Spangler, costume design by Matthew Solomon, lighting design by Drama Desk nominee Jamie Roderick, sound design by Germán Martínez & Cosette Pin, puppet design by Matt Anderson, and props by Brendan McCann. Alex Dash is Production Stage Manager, and Kaitlyn Merriam and Lara Sato are Assistant Stage Managers. Casting is by Zachary Spiegel, CSA; general management by Visceral Entertainment, advertising & marketing by Leanne Schanzer Promotions, digital marketing by Super Awesome Friends, and the production counsel is Feldshon Law, PLLC – Lee Adhemar G. Feldshon, Esq.

Stranger Sings! is produced by Sue Gilad, Larry Rogowsky, Nick Flatto, and Jonathan Hogue. Co-Producers include Catherine Schreiber, Bard Theatricals, Miranda Farag, Inbal & Ron Gonen, Xin Wen, and Jason Turchin / Jim Kierstead. Joseph Longthorne is an Associate Producer.

Following its world premiere at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2018, Stranger Sings!, The Parody Musical launched a hit Off-Broadway run at The Players Theatre in Summer 2021, winning seven 2021 BroadwayWorld Off-Broadway Awards including ‘Best New Musical.’ In addition to the Off-Broadway production,Stranger Sings!, The Parody Musical recently launched all-new productions in London, within a maze of disused railway arches underneath Waterloo Station; and Australia, bringing the The Upside Down to Down Under.

The Original Off-Broadway Cast Recording of Stranger Sings!, The Parody Musical, is now available on Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, and all major platforms.

LISTINGS INFORMATION: Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical plays through August 13, 2023 at Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s (308 W. 46th Street). Tickets are $49-$99 for all performances. MEGACON Orlando 2023 Event Wrap Up

I have attended MEGACON nearly every year since 2010. It is literally one of the biggest fan conventions out there. They cover everything from comics, anime, sci-fi, horror, animation, gaming, & more. It is truly one of my favorite events each year. This year the show took place on Thursday March 30th and ran through Sunday April 2nd. My favorite day to go was Friday, it was busy but also not insane like Saturday usually is. This year, the wife and I even dressed up as a steampunk version of Disney’s Figment and his Dreamfinder. We ended up taking over 35 photos with other fans that stopped us along the way. It was a ton of fun. I have never dressed up for a convention before and it will not be the last time.

The highlight of the convention had to be some of the special events that took place including the Studio Ghibli VIP experience with Hirokatsu Kihara, former Chief Production Officer at Studio Ghibli, who was there to show key pieces of his collection and also to celebrate 35th anniversary this year: My Neighbor Totoro. This was a rare U.S. appearance and one not to miss. If you are a comic fan, Saturday was lit with the 25th anniversary of 300, featuring the man himself Frank Miller, doing a special panel as he discusses the ideas, art, and history that inspired the legendary comic, 300.

Friday was on fire with the following celebrity talent: Cerina Vincent (POWER RANGERS: LOST GALAXY, CABIN FEVER), Greg Sestero (THE ROOM), Sam Raimi (DIRECTOR OF EVIL DEAD AND SPIDER-MAN TRILOGIES), Anthony Michael Hall (JOHN HUGHES’ FILMS, THE DEAD ZONE), Carl Weathers (THE MANDALORIAN, ROCKY), Mercedes Varnado (THE MANDALORIAN, WWE’s SASHA BANKS), Sonequa Martin-Green (STAR TREK: DISCOVERY), COBRA KAI was represented with Ralph Macchio, William Zabka and Martin Kove and more, Henry Winkler (HAPPY DAYS), Tara Strong (TEEN TITANS GO!, MY LITTLE PONY) and Charles Martinet (VOICE OF MARIO)

Saturday brought some overwelming talent including Hayden Christensen (STAR WARS), Rosario Dawson (CLERKS II, AHSOKA), James McAvoy (X-MEN), Chevy Chase (NATIONAL LAMPOON SERIES), John Cleese (MONTY PYTHON), Zachary Levi (SHAZAM), Charlie Cox (DAREDEVIL), Steve Burns (BLUES CLUES), SCREAM cast includes Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy, Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, Mark-Paul Gosselaar (SAVED BY THE BELL), Giancarlo Esposito (THE MANDALORIAN, BREAKING BAD) and Vincent D’Onofrio (FULL METAL JACKET, DAREDEVIL)

If you were a anime fan, MEGACON, hooked you up solid with an outrageous guest list including
Christopher Sabat (DRAGON BALL Z, MY HERO ACADEMIA), Zach Aguilar (DEMON SLAYER), Aleks Le (DEMON SLAYER), Abby Trott (DEMON SLAYER), Justin Briner (MY HERO ACADEMIA) and Colleen Clinkenbeard (ONE PIECE, MY HERO ACADEMIA).

Besides just celebrities signing, there is SO MUCH MORE to the convention including a cosplay competition and endless supply of panels and workshops. There is a row of tattoo artists doing their thing as well as Artist Alley featuring Comic Legends, Pro Comic Book artists, and writers. Are you a video game fan? They have a tournament to battle it out and test your skills against other fans. If you are a D&D fan, you can roll for initiative and take part in play sessions.

Honestly, one of the best parts are MEGACON is that it is a family convention. They have activities and attractions for the whole family. I loved walking around and see groups of families all dressed up in costumes. There is so much for a family to do at a show like this. They even have an opportunity to take part in workshops & panels just for kids. Not to mention there is ten of thousands of square feet of shopping for the whole family.

The fun doesn’t end when the convention is over though, they have a ton of great after hours content to enjoy for those visiting. First up there was Karaoke with Emily Swallow (THE MANDALORIAN) kicking off things on Friday night. Also on Friday there was a special, interactive screening of THE ROOM, the best bad movie ever made with Greg Sestero, the actor who plays Mark, doing a live Q&A. That’s just the beginning with Anime After Dark featuring special Cosplay guests, amazing DJs like DJ Awesomeus Prime and DJ Kino, plus Anime, electronic, and hip-hop music all night.

Overall, I think it was a solid weekend, jam packed with tons of great content for everyone. MEGACON definitely stepped it up this year. Everything was easily down from the parking, which they handled very well to the registration, which was incredibly easy. I cannot wait till next year on February 1st through the 4th for the 2024 MEGACON convention! I will be first in line for sure!

Steven Wolsh talks about new film “Kill Her Goats” starring Kane Hodder and sequel plans!

Steve Wolsh is the man behind the new horror movie KILL HER GOATS starring Playboy Playmates and also horror legend, Kane Hodder!

Official Premise: Audra’s graduation gift is her dream house, but it soon becomes a living nightmare when some uninvited guests come to her homecoming party who aren’t very subtle about the fact they don’t approve of the home’s new owner.

KILL HER GOATS is Steve’s second movie after MUCK (2015), which both live inside the same film universe. It was funded by one of the most successful Kickstarters of all time and features 100% practical creature and gore effects…did I mention that it stars Playboy Playmates and horror legend, Kane Hodder!!?? This is a must see for all horror fans for sure!

You can purchased KILL HER GOATS from the official website along with tons of other additional merchandise, including a soundtrack album and even a GoatFace mask from Trick or Treat Studios: https://killhergoats.com/

Film Review “Paint”

As a guy that watching “The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross” daily, I knew that PAINT was a film that I needed to see for sure. Owen Wilson has always been a favorite of mine, even dating back to “Bottle Rocket” days (anyone remember that one?). Although this has nothing to Bob Ross, I am sure that the inspiration for Carl Nargle doesn’t steer far, especially with that signature perm and Carl’s gentle whisper while speaking to his audience.

PAINT is written and directed by Brit McAdams, whose credits include “Katt Williams: American Hustle” and TV series “Tosh.0” and that’s about it. Besides Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers”), the film co-stars Michaela Watkins (“Werewolves Within”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”), Ciara Renee (Hawkgirl from CW’s “Arrowverse”), Lusia Strus (“50 First Dates”) and Stephen Root (“Office Space”). No shortage of talent that’s for sure.

Official Premise: In PAINT, Owen Wilson portrays Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.

Owen Wilson doesn’t disappoint but this “comedy” overall feels a little to dry for me personally. I definitely would call this more a dramedy if anything. What saves it for me is it’s tight 96 minute run time. It doesn’t waste any time. I really wanted to love this but alas I just didn’t fall in love with it. The beginning starts off solid, the middle lost me but the ending was decent for sure. So I guess you can say this one is a bit uneven. I would call this a one-timer, not likely to watch again but didn’t hate it.

Kyra Elise Gardner talks about her documentary “Living with Chucky”

After growing up within the Child’s Play franchise, director Kyra Elise Gardner (daughter of special effects artist Tony Gardner) offers a unique perspective on Chucky’s reign of terror in Living with Chucky.

The feature documentary will stream exclusively on SCREAMBOX on April 4. It will also be available on VOD platforms the same day via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting before hitting Blu-ray on April 18.

Chucky creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirshner, and more spill their guts along with notable fans like Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others.

Storming into pop culture in 1988, the killer doll known as Chucky proved that Child’s Play was anything but. It went on to spawn six sequels, a TV series, a reboot, comic books, a video game, and extensive merchandise. Living with Chucky recounts the dedication, creativity, and sacrifice that went into making the franchise and its long-lasting impact on the horror community.
