Theatre Review “The Spongebob Musical” @ Orlando Repertory Theatre

Gotta admit, I am not the biggest SpongeBob fan. I have seen a few episodes and the two movies that have been released and that’s really it. I never watched religiously over the years…yet I have always respected the show that has been on the air nearly 25 years and going strong. I am however a sucker for musicals when I saw that “Spongebob Squarepants” was becoming not only a musical but an acclaimed musical, my interest was peaked. Especially when I saw that “The Spongebob Musical” was going to be at the Orlando Repertory Theatre, I knew I had to go. I ended up taking my 11 year old daughter and let me tell you we both had a blast at this showing. The show was fun, colorful and full of amazing songs that had you nearly up and dancing in your seats.

Official Premise: Are you ready, kids? The hit Nickelodeon show has become a big, splashy Broadway musical! Dive into the undersea town of Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob and his quirky circle of friends and neighbors – Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and even Plankton – in this dynamic stage musical with songs from music’s most legendary artists. Chaos erupts when SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation at the threat of Mt. Humongous. Just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage. The power of optimism really can save the world!

When I mentioned the music, there are amazing original songs by Yolanda Adams – Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith – Sara Bareilles – Jonathan Coulton – Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – The Flaming Lips – Lady A – Cyndi Lauper – John Legend – Panic! At the Disco – Plain White T’s – They Might Be Giants – T.I. and songs By David Bowie – Tom Kenny & Andy Paley. My favorite has to be Bikini Bottom Day, which kicked off the show and also act 2 in reprise. Like I mentioned the song were just so energetic and fun. Definitely not what I expected from a Spongebob musical but I was pleasantly surprised.

The sets at the Orlando Repertory Theatre were very impressive as well. There were filled with color and really added a lot to the show. The cast was also amazing especially Joel Hunt, who played Spongebob, who was all over the stage including doing back flips and running into the aisles. My daughters favorite was Squidward, played by Liam Joshua Munn. Though I got to admit, the entire ensemble was very talented. I love coming to shows at the Orlando Repertory Theatre because there is always a diverse cast and I have never been let down in terms of quality of performances. I can’t wait to see what they have planned next. And if you can I would highly recommend catching a performance of “The Spongebob Musical” before it closes out on April 30th, you won’t be disappointed.

Nintendo Switch Review “Justice League: Cosmic Chaos”

Justice League: Cosmic Chaos” is the latest game from Outright Games in collaboration with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Released on March 10th, this all-new open world action adventure game is made for Justice League fans of all ages. In the game you can play as one of four characters; Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman or Cyborg. You can play solo in single player mode or team up with 2-player co-op mode. The game is available to play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox X|S and Steam. So you have plenty of options as you battle Mr. Mxyzptlk, the trickster from the 5th Dimension. Throughout the action-packed missions, you must defeat hordes of enemies using each hero’s unique abilities to restore peace. I like that you are able to switch between each character and how each character has their own powers that are needed throughout the game.

From Superman’s Heat Vision and Super Breath to Wonder Woman’s Truth’s Pull and Batman’s exploding Batarangs there is plenty of fun to be had as you aim to restore peace across Happy Harbor. The gameplay is fun and filled with exciting puzzles to complete and outfits with special upgrades to unlock and customize. Throughout the game you also interact with other Justice League members Green Lantern, The Flash and Aquaman who make fun cameos. As you search for The Artefacts of Justice, which can be found by fighting baddies and completing quests. There is plenty of content with 30 powerful attack and defense items to be found including Green Arrow’s Bow and Raven’s Cloak. There are even fun side missions that allow you to search Happy Harbor for clues that lead you to villains, bounties, and even secret locations.

The open world aspect of the game really makes this game fun for all ages. There is tons fun characters including one of the first villains that the Justice League fought against together in The Brave and the Bold Issue #28 in 1960, Starro the Conqueror, the mind controlling alien. Lastly, for a limited time only, if you pick up a physical copy of DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos on the Nintendo Switch, it comes with an exclusive character keychain. I am excited to continue playing this game and exploring the world and collecting items. Definitely worth checking out for all fans of Justice League.

“Mermaids’ Lament”: A New Film by Director GB Hajim that Teaches about Resilience through Trauma and Imagination

Los Angeles, CA – March 17, 2023 – Director GB Hajim is proud to announce his latest film “Mermaids’ Lament,” which tells a story of two women who find strength in each other despite their personal struggles.

The film follows two women: Oee (Dayva Summer Escobar) a traumatized woman who has lost her voice and may or may not be a mermaid. Her therapist, Dr. Nell Jamison (Justina Mattos) battles with anxiety herself, attempts to help Oee overcome her delusions and connect with reality. As they bond over their experiences, they learn to be resilient like the ocean and embrace the power of imagination to navigate the chaos of the world.

GB Hajim has been supporting the Hawaiian Renaissance through his multimedia work for over 25 years. He has produced over 150 Hawaiian language dramas, animations, documentaries, podcasts, and educational programs.

“Mermaids’ Lament” is GB’s second feature film, following the self-produced 2D animated sci-fi lesbian musical, “Strange Frame” (2013), which featured an all-star cast including Claudia Black, Cree Summer, Tim Curry, George Takei, Academy Award winner Gary Rizzo for sound, and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd for music.

GB is excited to bring his passion for storytelling and his love for the ocean to “Mermaids’ Lament.” He splits his time between working with the Hawaiian community, writing screenplays, freediving, and farming.

It’s a year of celebrating animation master Hayao Miyazaki with the first-ever nationwide retrospective of his Studio Ghibli works, including several anniversary titles: the 35th Anniversary screenings of My Neighbor Totoro, 15th Anniversary screenings of Ponyo, and 10th Anniversary screenings of The Wind Rises. GKIDS, celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, are proud to continue their partnership with Fathom events and expand STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2023 to more screening dates than ever before to meet increased fan demand.

The Way Home tells the story of three generations of women – Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh), her teen Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) and Kat’s mother Del (Andie MacDowell) – who are all strong, willful and independent. More than 20 years prior, life-changing events prompted Kat to move away from her small, Canadian farm town and she remains estranged from Del to this day. Band has produced more than 360 films, original series, toys, collectibles, merchandise, and comic books, and publishes the popular horror film magazine, Delirium.

FMF owns and operates its own streaming entertainment channel called FullMoonFeatures.com, a service that offers hundreds of new, classic and obscure horror, fantasy and cult movies. The studio also has their own Amazon Prime Video channel and their films are widely available on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Tubi, Google Play and Xbox One. 

Band’s films helped launch the careers of many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Demi Moore (Parasite), Helen Hunt (Trancers) and Viggo Mortensen (Prison).

Film Review “Children of the Corn (2023)”

“Children of the Corn” has a long history, original written as a short story by iconic horror author Stephen King back in 1977. The story was first adapted to the big-screen in 1984 since then it has inspired nine sequels and one remake. While the 2023 film doesn’t break the mold, it takes the story in a new direction by serving as a prequel while expanding upon the mythology.

Official Synopsis: Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, a twelve-year-old girl in Nebraska recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.

This film lines up “Equilibrium” director Kurt Wimmer taking the helm. I am a fan of his work and I like where he takes this story and dives deeper into the mythos of He Who Walks Behind the Rows. This film hasn’t had an easy road as it was shot right at the start of the pandemic in March of 2020 and has its world premiere right here in Florida back in October 2020 and until now there hasn’t been any peep.

The cast is impressive including Elena Kampouris, who does a solid job in the lead role. Kate Moyer nails the creepy role of Eden. There are a few known faces that pop up, Callan Mulvey, who has appeared in the Marvel Universe with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Avengers: Endgame” and Bruce Spence from “Mad Max 2”, “Finding Nemo”, “Star Wars Episode III” round out the cast.

“Children of the Corn” hits theaters on March 3rd from RLJE Films. While it doesn’t pack the scares of the first film and features some cheap CGI, it is worth a watch still. After 11 films, I am still craving for more, so I am sure we haven’t seen the end of this franchise just yet.
