Film Review “The Night House”

Directed by: David Bruckner
Starring: Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin, Vondie Curtis-Hall
Distributed by: Searchlight Pictures
Release date: August 20, 2021
Running time: 110 minutes

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5 stars

The very first time that I saw the poster for “The Night House”, I knew that I wanted to see it. I knew nothing about the movie besides that Rebecca Hall (“Godzilla vs Kong”) was in it and that it was a horror film. The trailer looks good and suspenseful. The movie unfortunately doesn’t deliver the scares and leaves you pondering at the end. Hall really delivers a solid performance basically holding this entire movie on her shoulders. I was really hoping for some solid scares here but every time something was getting scary I feel like it was pulled back leaving me wanting more.

Official Premise: Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. She tries as best she can to keep it together – but then nightmares come. Disturbing visions of a presence in the house calling to her, beckoning her with a ghostly allure. Against the advice of her friends, she begins digging into her husband’s belongings, yearning for answers. What she finds are secrets both strange and disturbing – a mystery she’s determined to unravel

I was a fan of the director David Bruckner who is likely know for his segment “Amateur Night” in 2012’s “V/H/S” as well as 2016’s “Southbound”. He definitely has the horror genre down pat but I just feel like this was played too safe. The ending in particular leaves you with far too many questions and there is not enough answers to make it worth the nearly two hour running time. They could have easily cut back at least 20 minutes from the beginning which dragged a bit getting started. The middle was solid but like I said the ending lost me and didn’t deliver.

I see already that many other critics are getting behind this film calling it a moody film that goes deeper into someone coping with a death of a loved one as well as paranoia. I get that and I see it in the film as well but I feel like it was not fully cashed in on. I did enjoy Ben Lovett’s score, which did create the creepy atmosphere. Lastly I know the film is called “The Night House”, so a lot of the film is dark and takes place at night but a few of the “scares” take place in extremely dark lit scenes that they are almost missed due to the darkness of the scene.

Overall, I am not disappointed that I watched it but it is definitely what I like to call a one-timer. I definitely do not see myself watching this movie again. So if you are looking for some light scares (nothing that will force you to sleep with the lights on though) and a good performance by Hall, you may want to check this out. Otherwise wait till it comes to Netflix.

BEHIND THE SCREEN: 93rd Annual Academy Awards – A Night to (NOT) Remember

Well, thank God that’s over. The final film award ceremony of 2021 is over, and not a minute too soon.

Viewers who tuned in to the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony (guilty, but I have a website. What’s your excuse?) were treated to un-enthusiastic presenters, amazingly long speeches (I’m guessing Questlove wasn’t told he could play people off) and an “In Memoriam” segment that looks like it was thrown together at the last minute. And can someone tell me how a show with no host, opening monologue and zero musical numbers – unless you count the embarrassing “Oscar Music Trivia” game that featured Glenn Close shaking her ass to E.U.’s “Da Butt” – ran almost 3 1/2 hours??

On a positive note, there were some great achievements rewarded. A woman of color (Chloe Zhao) was named Best Director, only the second time a woman has won that Award. Think about that. Out of 465 nominees only SEVEN women have been nominated: Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, Sophia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow (who won), Greta Gerwig, Ms. Zhao and Emerald Fennell, who with Ms. Zhao was nominated this year. Which means such female directors, like Penny Marshall and Barbra Streisand, have been totally ignored, even though in the past they had directed films nominated for Best Picture!

Daniel Kaluuya and Youn Yuh-jing took home the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards, respectively, putting a slight dent into the #OscarSoWhite reputation.

Frances McDormand became the second actress to receive (3) Best Actress awards when her name was announced last night, putting her right behind the immortal Katherine Hepburn, who won (4). Meryl Streep does have (3) Oscars, but one was for Best Supporting Actress. Ms. McDormand picked up a 4th Oscar as one of the producers of the evening’s Best Picture, “Nomadland.” And whose idea was it to give the Best Picture award out early? Normally it’s the last award of the night, but on this night it was awarded before Best Actress and Actor were named. My hunch is that the producers assumed the late Chadwick Boseman, who was nominated for his final performance in the film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” would win, which would have made for a nice emotional way to end the evening. Instead, Joaquin Phoenix sheepishly announced Anthony Hopkins as the winner of the Best Actor award, and that was a wrap!

My beef with the “In Memoriam” segment was that, for some reason, the Academy figured if you were watching you knew who everyone was and what they did. An introduction that took u 1/3 of the segment, no film clips and, while known talents like Christopher Plummer, George Segal and Wilford Brimley got a few seconds of screen time each, others – among them Marge Champion (a great dancer), Shirley Knight (a fine actress), Kelly Preston (same) and Michael Chapman (an amazing cinematographer whose credits include “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and “The Fugitive”) whizzed by in a blink.

The fact that only nominees and presenters were allowed to be in the venue also made for dull television. Smatterings of applause signaled that the guests in the theatre were apparently as bored as the ones at my house.

Blame it on COVID. Blame it on the fact that none of the films nominated were “NAME” films – no “Titanic,” “Avatar” or “Lord of the Rings” in the bunch. Blame it on bad television. There’s plenty of blame to go around.

For those of you who went to bed early, here is a list of the winners:

ICONIC HORROR FILM SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT SLATED FOR REBOOT

Feature film will be coming down the chimney in 2022

Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios (JEEPERS CREEPERS: REBORN) announced today that they have acquired the remake rights to the seminal slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night. The original film’s producers Scott Schneid and Dennis Whitehead of Wonderwheel Entertainment will join Orwo in bringing an exciting new vision of this cult classic to modern movie audiences in 2022.

The project was brought to Orwo by producer Anthony Masi of MasiMedia. Schneid, Whitehead, and Masi will produce along with Jake Seal, Terry Bird, and Jamie R. Thompson of Orwo Studios/Black Hangar. Orwo Studios is financing and representing the film for worldwide sales rights.

Declared as the most controversial film of the 80s – Silent Night, Deadly Night tells the story of a child who is traumatized after seeing his parents killed by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Years later, he dons a Santa suit himself and gets bloody revenge on the naughty list.

Wonderwheel says, “The continued desire for horror content and the ongoing success of the genre meant it was the perfect time to be able to offer up this chilling revival of the iconic title.” Masi adds, “We are thrilled to be working with the original producers as well as Orwo and Black Hangar and are committed to honoring nostalgia for the original while offering surprises for new audiences to discover and embrace.”

David Hasselhoff Goes Heavy Metal on “Through The Night” with Two-Man Metal Band CUESTACK

Kickstarter Campaign Now Underway

TV icon David Hasselhoff has recorded a metal song, “Through the Night,” with the two-man metal project CUESTACK, and a Kickstarter campaign to finance the final steps of editing a video and “making-of” documentary on the project is now underway.

The collaboration between Hasselhoff and CUESTACK started in 2018 with many demos and meetings to make what seemed like an impossible idea slowly turn into a reality. As life-long “Hoff‘” fans, CUESTACK had the ultimate goal to create a metal project with the most-watched man on TV showing the world his heavy side. Hasselhoff recorded the track with CUESTACK in 2019 in Vienna where they also shot an epic music video together.

The band’s final mission: Finishing the editing process of the cinematic video that will accompany the song. With a limited budget and schedule, CUESTACK shot the entire video with Hasselhoff in just one day, using smaller versions of the sets than originally planned. To turn their retro Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk vision into reality, a massive post-production effort is needed now to extend these basic sets into living worlds.

All Kickstarter contributions go directly into financing those final steps. Aside from providing digital downloads, Hasselhoff fans can pre-order special “Through the Night” box sets, which include a Digipak CD, eight-page booklet with liner notes, printed high-quality autograph card, poster, “Through the Night” baseball cap and custom leather bracelet.

Join the Kickstarter campaign at http://kck.st/3jwgwEH.

About CUESTACK:

When the worlds of eccentric lighting/VFX designer Martin Kames and shred guitar content creator Bernth Brodträger collide, explosive music and art manifest in the form of CUESTACK. An unmistakable blend of metal and electronic music with well established sonic trademarks is the result, paired with an industrial, dystopian corporate identity that is ever-present in the band’s cinematic music videos and artworks.

Video Game Review: “Goosebumps Dead of Night”

“Goosebumps Dead of Night”

Playstation, Xbox One, Steam, Nintendo Switch

Cosmic Forces

Our Score 4 out of 5 stars

“Goosebumps Dead of Night” is a family-friendly way for Goosebumps fans of all ages to engage with some of their favorite R.L. Stine stories and characters while getting spooked a bit. Slappy has escaped from the pages of Goosebumps and reunited his family of Monsters. It’s up to you to stop Slappy’s dastardly plan to unleash the Goosebumps monsters into our world. Hide from monsters summoned from classic Goosebumps tales while exploring and solving puzzles in an effort to trap Slappy back into his book. Can you survive Slappy’s wrath and defeat him?

Straight from the pages and screen of your favorite Goosebumps books and films is the latest installment in the Goosebumps franchise. “Goosebumps Dead of Night” is a first person RPG that transports the player directly into the world of R.L. Stine. Players are immersed in dark and eerie locations while being tasked with having to collect missing book pages while warding off creepy clowns, werewolves, angry garden gnomes and the one and only Slappy! Visually the game looks great and captures the spirit of the series quite well. The foreboding soundtrack adds to the games appeal and certainly helps with several jump moments. It was a lot of fun going from level to level and seeing which story characters you were going to encounter next as each task brings the player closer and to closer to a final showdown with Slappy high up within the Tesla tower.

If you are new to first person RPG’s then it may take a little while to get used to the controls and how to navigate around the different levels but, once you have that all down the game provides is a lot of fun. Parents of younger players may want to check the game out first as there are some parts which can be a little frightening. Fans of the books will obviously want to check this out on one of the four available platforms (Playstation, Xbox One, Steam, Nintendo Switch) as “Goosebumps Dead of Night” is a great continuation of the Goosebumps franchise and one that both parents and youth will enjoy playing time and time again.

Nothing you can do short of impersonating the Fed Ex or pizza delivery person or taking out a second mortgage can get you into this once in a lifetime show now…

There is good news, though: Both performances—Foo Fighters and Run The Jewels—will be streamed live to fans across the world on Twitter https://twitter.com/DIRECTV or on AUDIENCE NETWORK on DIRECTV CH 239 or on DIRECTV NOW.

The live stream begins at 10:30pm ET with FOO FIGHTERS hitting the stage at 11:00pm ET.

Yes, the stadium-shaking anthems that have earned Foo Fighters 12 Grammy Awards, sold 25 million records and continue to sell millions of tickets the world over will come to your living room if you can’t make it to Atlanta. And don’t sleep on this one: The band has been circling the globe crushing it with rock marathons since its latest album, the international #1 Concrete and Gold, was released in September 2017. There are fewer Foo Fighters U.S. gigs left on the itinerary than you can count on two hands so make sure you’re in front of that phone, tablet or TV screen February 2. It may be your last dose of live Foo Fighters for quite some time to come. And Run the Jewels are sure to crush it too. If there was ever a night to make any excuse to stay in and go big…

In the meantime, get psyched for the big show the night before the big game, specifically: Get Jacked on Jackalopes! Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8LeYu2uybU for a brand new short film written and directed by Foo Fighters’ own Dave Grohl, featuring Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan—and of course some more familiar faces—in a hilarious time warping homage that presents the familiar Foo Fighters comedic chops in a classic 1970s cinematic style and story (and don’t forget the cheerleaders):

Larry Butz (Dave Grohl) sponsored by Butz Bail Bonds
Helmuut Pyle (Pat Smear) sponsored by Pyles Adult diapers
Jake Schenker (Chris Shiflett)
Bertrand Hitchens (Nate Mendel) sponsored by 1 800 Ferns
Bret Rogers (Taylor Hawkins)

The Longest Yard and Invincible got nothing on the Jackalopes—you’ll be on the edge of your seat dying to know “WILL THEY MAKE IT TO SUPER SATURDAY NIGHT BEFORE THE BIG GAME?”
