Blu-ray Review “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”

Actors: Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench, Allison Janney
Director: Tim Burton
Rated: PG-13
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: December 13, 2016
Run Time: 127 minutes

Film: 2 out of 5 stars
Blu-ray: 4 out of 5 stars
Extras: 3 out of 5 stars

I am a huge life long fan of director Tim Burton…but I have to admit his last one or two films have not done it for me. “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” feels like a cheap family friendly version of “X-Men: First Class” and plays way to long. I found myself not caring about the characters at all. I hated the villains Samuel L. Jackson was a joke and was completely wrong for the role. I found myself consistently bored watching this and couldn’t wait for it to be over. So not Burton’s finest for sure but I am still sticking around for what he has planned next.

Official Premise: When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing this film as sa combo pack with a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD copy. The 1080p transfer presented with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 looks sharp here. I first saw this film in 3D and it had no reason to be in 3D at all and was a complete waste, so the standard Blu-ray is much better way to view. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track is really nice but I still wasn’t in love with the score as a I have been with previous Burton films.

The special features are not loaded solid but they are decent and worth checking out. “The Peculiar Story” is a solid featurette with interviews with Ransom Riggs, who discusses the film. “The Peculiars” runs over an hour long and is packed with interviews and information on the film. “Hollows and Ex-Hollows” showcases the baddies inthe film. “Map of Days” focuses on the time loop aspect of the film. Lastly there is a music video for “Wish That You Were Here” from Florence + The Machine and a photo gallery included.

Protect Your Home with Nest Cam Outdoor Security Camera

If you are a homeowner, security is always an important issue. If you are looking to get coverage of your home and not spend thousands of dollars. The Nest Cam Outdoor Security Camera. This new camera always you to have 24/7 live video with a 130° wide-angle view with an all-glass lens that will allow you to view your home in 1080p HD all day and night right from your phone. I am not an electrician or a handyman around the house but this is extremely easy to install and get yourself protected. Just mount the camera and go.

Besides just being a neat looking camera, the Nest Cam Outdoor allows you to get alerts and snapshots to your phone or email with a photo of the event. Since it is outdoor but rest assured, this product is weatherproof so rain and shine, this bad boy will work! You are also able to listen and talk back with the built-in speaker and microphone through the app.

With the holiday season coming around quickly, this is a great gift for friends and family and very reasonable priced also. The Nest Cam Outdoor also offers Nest Aware, which allows for continuous cloud recording as well as the ability to create activity zones for more precise alerts. And you even get a trial of this with your purchase.

If you are looking to compare this product to other cameras, you will find that most other outdoor cameras will have limited streaming compatibility since they most rely on battery power. Some also have local storage, so if the camera is stolen the footage is gone also. Our neighborhood recently had issues with bicycles being taken right from in front of their house and this could have been avoided or at least captured with the assistance of a outdoor camera like Nest.

Before coming to the conclusion of the Nest Cam Outdoor, I have tried numerous other products in Ring Doorbell and I have never had such an easy time overall from the moment I opened the box until it was fully operational. I wish it could always be this issue with these products. I am also a big user of the Amazon Echo for voice activation and since it is already working with Nest’s other product it might not be before long that we would be able to interact with the Nest Cam as well. Highly recommend this for this holiday season. I have a feeling that it is going to be a hot item for sure.

Film Review “Daddy’s Home”

Starring: Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg
Directed by: Sean Anders
Rated: PG 13
Running time: 1 hr 36 mins
Paramount

Our Score: 3 out of 5 stars

With 52% of all marriages in America ending in divorce, the plot of “Daddy’s Home” may resonate more than the filmmakers thought. Brad Whitaker (Ferrell) is a great guy. Volunteers to work with kids, donates his time coaching…he does all the things a great dad does. Except he has no children. A “mishap” earlier in life has made him unable to father a child. But his dream comes true when he marries the beautiful Sarah (Linda Cardenelli), who has two young children from her first marriage. Brad does his best to gain the kid’s love, often making their lunch and putting inspirational messages inside next to the PB&J sandwich. But the kids don’t thaw easily. Young son Dylan (Owen Vacarro) begins to warm but daughter Megan (Scarlett Estevez) is taking a little more time. She has begun including Brad in her “family” drawings, but unfortunately in each drawing he’s dead. Kids!

A hit or miss re-teaming of the stars of “The Other Guys,” “Daddy’s Home” survives on the chemistry between Ferrell and co-star Wahlberg, who plays Dusty, the kids birth father. When he comes to visit, astride a beautiful, gleaming motorcycle, Brad begins to feel intimidated. This doesn’t stop him, however, from allowing Dusty to stay in his house. Brad is the manager of a smooth jazz radio station, whose boss (Thomas Haden Church) is always sharing stories about his multiple marriages. When Dusty is hired to be the “voice” of the radio station (he records all of the station’s bumpers and promos) things get a little testy at home. But Brad doesn’t give up. With occasionally funny consequences.

Director Anders, who also co-wrote the script with John Morris and Brian Burns (they also collaborated on the original “Hot Tub Time Machine” and sequels “Horrible Bosses 2” and “Dumb and Dumber To,” proves himself skillful at setting up some major sight gags but when it’s just the cast intermingling the film begins to slow down. Ferrell and Wahlberg appear to be having fun, and a small role of former handyman/new house tenant Griff (Hannibal Buress) could have been expanded some as he had some of the best lines. All in all, when the kids are disappointed that “Star Wars” is sold out, you can have a little fun with them here.

Film Review “Home”

Starring the Voices Of: Jim Parsons, Rihanna, and Steve Martin
Directed By: Tim Johnson
Rated: PG
Running Time: 94 minutes
20th Century Fox

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars

“Every once and a while…we knock it out of the park!” That should be Dreamworks Animation’s motto. “Home” will be their 31st movie, and since 1998, the studio hasn’t had as many home runs as Pixar and they only have two Oscars for Best Animated Feature. They won one for Best Original Song, but I’m sure no one at the office is hanging their hat on that one. “Home” is another adequate entry into Dreamworks Animation’s young history, but nothing to rave about.

“Home” is an adaptation of the book that I’ve never heard of, “The True Meaning of Smekday”. The movie revolves around the alien species, the Boov, but more specifically Oh (Parsons). He’s oblivious to his friendlessness and a general nuisance to the other Boov around him. His speech pattern is that of a Kindergartener learning proper English and his best qualities are made up of Olaf from “Frozen” and his worst qualities border on Jar-Jar Binks from an unmentionable prequel.

The Boov are a species that are constantly on the run, fearing the wrath of another alien race by the name of Gorg. Their tactic for avoiding destruction by the angry Gorg involves inhabiting Earth and forcibly abducting and relocating every human being on the planet to Australia; forcing them to live in gated communities (I’m sure the pitfalls of this plan are highly entertaining). Through a series of events, Oh accidentally alerts the Gorg to the Boov’s presence on Earth and becomes a fugitive of his own species. He runs into Tip (Rihanna), who has managed to avoid capture and is hiding out in her empty home, eating cans of pasta. This sets off a slightly amusing roadtrip/chase with a preteen and clueless space creature.

“Home” is obviously setting its sights on the children in the audience, with very few inside jokes for adults; although most will enjoy the comical voice stylings of Steve Martin as the leader of the Boov, Smek. You might wince at seeing Rihanna’s name, considering her persona in the entertainment industry and how she’s portrayed in the media. You also might be scratching your head at that acting choice considering her previous credits are “Battleship” and “This is the End”. She doesn’t quite carry the same silliness that Martin and Parsons bring to their character, but she has a believable tween voice. Her voice always sounds playful and youthful, and it’s actually a creditable dose of voice work on her part.

Halfway through I noticed that Rihanna’s contract must have stipulated that the entire soundtrack must be crafted by her since she’s seemingly on every song. It’s hard to pack an emotional punch when a movie’s soundtrack consists of “As Real As You and Me” and “Drop That”. It’s almost like creators of some of these movies are worried they won’t speak to an eight-year-old if they don’t throw in some contemporary hip-hop dance tracks.

“Home” is still an enjoyable time. Some moments move at blistering speeds, with aliens zipping to and fro with visual jokes and audible humor firing off left and right. When it has to rely on our two lone heroes with nothing, but themselves in a car, it struggles. Maybe Dreamworks should start cherry picking what they want to do next, or at the very least, put more effort into their promising projects. “Home” has the pieces for something remarkable, but none of the heart to stay with us.

Product Review “Epson Expression Home XP-410 Small-in-One Printer”

It’s September, which means the coming of Fall and also back to school for the kids. Having a teacher for a wife, I learn to stay in line with the requirements in order to get ready for the new year of school. If you are looking for that perfect back-to-school printer, I would look no further than the Expression Home XP-410 from Epson. It is very small in size yet still packs a solid high quality output. It is also great and very user friendly for students of all ages.

In today’s technology everything needs to be wireless, the XP-410 is a complete wireless solution. It comes Wi-Fi Certified, as well as Wi-Fi Direct, and equips with Epson Connect, which is a great solution to wireless printing from smartphones and tablets. If you are on the go and need to print quick, the XP-410 doesn’t even need a computer. You can use it’s supported Android printing (KitKat 4.4), which will allow mobile users to easily print documents, images or web-pages to Android mobile devices. So you can pretty much take the ability to print with you wherever you are.

When you are in front of this one-in-one printer, where you are printing, scanning or copying, the 2.5″ LCD and touch panel is very user friendly and easy to use. When I think about one-in-one printers, I always worry about the ink cartridges. You spend $60 dollars on a printer and then hundreds on ink. Luckily, the XP-410 comes equipped with very affordable individual ink cartridges and give you the option to replace only the color you need. For this unit there are four DURABrite Ultra Ink cartridges (one Black ink cartridge and three color ink cartridges: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow).

Spending all the time on the cool features, I don’t want to forget to discuss the actual printing process. I was very impressed with the remarkable print quality from this device. It is extremely fast and yet still delivers very crisp and sharp color in it’s photos and documents. Also included are better image enhancement tools like red-eye removal, photo restoration and correction of over/underexposed images, which are very handy. Lastly, this printer also allows you to print customized & borderless photos and of course you can also use the built-in card slots for PC-free printing.

So if you are nervous or excited to head back to school, this little handy device will save you a ton of worry. Plus did I mention it runs for around $50-60 dollars, which is quite cheap for such a powerful all-in-one. On the other hand, if you are looking for something with a little more oomph, you can check out the next model up, which would be the Epson Expression Premium XP-810 Small Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax. Hopefully we will be reviewing this unit next, so stay tuned to Media Mikes!
